While traveling north on us 221 from bent mountain, va to roanoke va my hydralic steering totally failed. As I travelled a short distance my brake light warning lights, abs light, other brake system light, battery light and air bag warning light came on. I looked at the engine temperature guage and the temp was normal. I pulled into a parking lot, raised the hood, checked the fluids in the engine compartment and reentered the car. While sitting in the drivers seat I heard a loud explosion, looked forward and noted thick steam coming from the engine compartment. I turned the engine off, exited the car and when the steam dissipated I noted that the cooling system filling/overflow tank was split in half damaging a protecting cover on the firewall and sprayed a building wall and window with engine coolant 10 feet away in front of the vehicle. I had the car towed to martin's german service in cave spring, va. Because the closest dealership in located in north carolina 150 miles away. Due to service volume they will not be able to evaluate the problem until 24 may 2016.

The oil lines that supply the turbocharger are leaking oil and it continues to get worse, starving the turbo of cooling oil and spraying oil all over the engine.

I own a 2003 Mini Cooper automatic and I've already had to have the power steering pump and the cooling fan replaced twice, and now, only a year later after my 2nd replacement and a few thousand dollars later, it needs to be replaced for a third time. The care only has 80,000 miles on it. This is costly and a safety issue for drivers. I will never buy another car by Mini or BMW.
My 2003 Mini Cooper has almost caught on fire several times, replaced transmission, electrical harness, power steering pump, a/c hoses and a/c service, wheel bearings, injection plugs etc. . . . . . . I still cannot find the real problem why is causing a short, it has almost caught on fire several times, this car has been the most dangerous car I have ever own, I have never spend so much money on trying to fix any vehicle, right now I'm about $11,500 in costs of repairs, this is a crime to the consumer, I have been reading about a class action lawsuit that is in progress, I hope and pray that we get justice from the maker of Mini.
1/10/2010, I my heater was blowing cold air and my engine temp indicator was jumping around. I called Mini of towson and took my car in for service. I reminded them that both air bag and flat tire indicators had been flickering on and off since the last time I came in on June of 2009 and that as of a few weeks ago they had both remained on. At that time, no one took my inquiry seriously and I was told the lights were coming on as a result of the past required engine work for the cooling system and engine, and a slow leak in one of my tires, which I was instructed too monitor by filling-up when low and to ignore. I was informed recently that I now have to replace my passenger side air bag seat sensor ($1000). I have read many of posts on the Miniusa website that say this as a common problem with Mini¿s being wired incorrectly form the manufacturer; something that could be avoided with early detection by the dealership at the time of the initial faulty indicator lighting. I was also told my water pump is now leaking coolant and needs to be replaced ($900); something I have been told may be attributed to the earlier manufacturing defects I had. Also, I am enrolled in their tire and rim protection warranty that states any tires or rims that are damaged by nails, pot holes, etc are replaced for free. They have patched 4 of my tires for nail damage; 3 out of the 4 tires continue to leak and I feel should be replaced. Lastly, my Mini appraised $6,500 by this dealer. I asked how much the value increases if I completely service the car and was told it would increase the value of services rendered ($3,100) a total est. Value of $9,600. When asked why my Mini had depreciated so much I was told because of the cars extensive service record. She said because of the deplorable service record, my car could not be kept by the Mini dealer and that it had to be sold at wholesale because the car is considered faulty. She said my Mini was not safe according to the dealer resell standard.

On March 12, 2009 at approximately 9:00 pm my wife and I were driving back from dinner in northridge, California when I made a stop at the local post office. I was driving my 2005 Mini Cooper hatchback and did not notice any warning lights or errant behavior with the car. I stopped at the post office to mail a package, parked the car, turned the engine off, locked the car with my wife inside the auto, and went in. When I returned approximately two minutes later I found my wife in the car in a great state of panic with smoke pouring out from under the hood of the car. I immediately unlocked the doors with my car key, made sure that my wife was out of the car, and we called the fire department. We both witnessed a small fire burning underneath the engine block. The fire department quickly arrived, opened the hood and put out the fire. I contacted a representative from Mini on the 13th who informed me that someone from BMW would be contacting me regarding the car. I towed the car back to my house and towed it to bob smith BMW in calabasas on Saturday the 14th. Bob smith BMW has provided me with a rental car in the interim. I then received a phone call from BMW from a steve kossar on March 17th, who requested the details of the incident. When I spoke with susan at bob smith BMW later that week I was informed that the steering pump was replaced along with a couple of additional parts. No explanation was given as to the cause of the fire. I was also informed that BMW north America would be assigning an engineer write a report on the status of the Mini and that bob smith BMW would not release the car to me until they received word from BMW north America that the car was sound. Since then I have placed two phone calls to mr. Kossar at BMW on April 1 and April 7 and left messages asking for a status report on the car. To date I have not received a reply and no word on the cause of the fire.
