1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2011 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/12/2019

Exhaust vanos solenoid failure 06/12/2019. This is a common issue to Mini's and BMW's that occurs on a regular basis which interrupts the pollution control system. BMW who manufactures the part has extended the warranty for this part on BMW's to 10 years but has not yet addressed all the issues that Mini owners have had with the particular part. There are two in the engine and they are identical (intake/exhaust) cost to replace is over $500. Why does BMW get a replacement and Mini owners have to pay. The car goes into a limp mode when failure occurs, so still drivable but at reduced power. This is a common issue and prevalent in both Mini forums and BMW forums. The warranty should be extended for Mini owners part # 11-36-8-610-388. It is a defective design by the manufacturer.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/25/2013

The vacuum pump (attached to exhaust cam shaft) on my 2009 Mini Cooper jcw seized on the highway in moving traffic (luckily in the right hand lane) - vacuum pump seizer led to exhaust cam shaft failure, which led to multiple engine part failure / engine puncture (destroyed engine and timing chain): destroyed engine = no power in moving traffic = serious hazard.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 10/13/2011

Shortly after the temperature light came on, smoke started coming out of the exhaust. I pulled over almost immediately on the side of the busy highway I was on. However, in just that short time, smoke was already coming out of the front of the car and out of the car vents. At least one bystander said he saw a fire before I shut off the engine. He called the fire department and paramedics for fear that I might be injured. Please note that this was not a Mini Cooper s. I am requesting that you expand your current investigation of Mini engine fires to include the standard model (Mini Cooper).

5 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/12/2011

The tailpipe of the subject vehicle extends beyond the rear bumper. My lower leg inadvertently made contact with the exhaust and, as a result, I suffered a serious "c"-shaped burn. The injury has required medical treatment. It appears that the manufacturer recalled a prior year's model for the identical and/or significantly similar issue. It is my understanding that the subject vehicle is a sister and/or clone of the vehicle that was recalled.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/26/2010

2006 BMW Mini Cooper, 2 door. Car suddenly loses power, shudders and engine shuts down. Occurs randomly. Has occurred 6 times since car was purchased, most recent occurrence September 2010. Each time car was taken to dealer. Each time dealer said it was fixed. Dealer does not share engineering information; so, I cannot determine exactly what was done. Dealer had to get Mini Cooper engineers for consultation on several occasions. Repair orders mention a part called the vanos on several occasions. Sudden lose of power appears to me to be a safety issue. Dealer has not been able to repair. Mini Cooper of north America has said there is no problem for them to remedy.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

I own a 2007 Mini Cooper. The tail pipe is large extends beyond the edge of the bumper. I had driven my car approximately 20 miles and parked it, then opened the back to retrieve some items from the cargo area. My leg came into contact with the tail pipe and I received a severe burn which was extremely painful and became blistered. The burn was large and in the shape of a half moon. There is still a scar on my leg from this. I contacted BMW Mini north America, told them what had happened, and sent them a picture of my leg with the burn on it. They arranged for me to bring my car in to the dealership and have an engineer evaluate the car for any defects in the tailpipe. Later I was told that the tailpipe was manufactured properly and I should just be careful not to touch it. I was also told that there is a warning in the owner's manual for the car regarding the tail pipe. I looked it up and it says "do not touch hot exhaust tail pipes. Otherwise there is a risk of burns". Unfortunately, the tail pipe is in a position where a person's leg would normally be when retrieving items from the cargo area of the car. And since it protrudes past the bumper, it is difficult not to touch it.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

In early December 2008 my wife was putting items in the back of the Mini Cooper and her leg touched the exhaust, pipe burning her leg. We took it to the service center and the service advisor informed us that there was nothing that they could do. On a recent visit to the service center the new service advisor informed us that there was a recall but not for this model. We are concerned from a safety stand point.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/21/2008

The contact owns a 2008 Mini Cooper sport. While removing groceries from the rear of the vehicle, the contact burned her leg on the exhaust pipe, which was located in the middle rear of the vehicle. The dealer gave her the number to the manufacturer, and they stated that they would get back with her. Since that time, the dealer stated that nothing else could be done due to the design of the exhaust system. She was advised to not get too close to the exhaust. The failure and current mileages were 1,400. Updated 08/04/08. The consumer stated the design itself was flawed. The consumer stated the issue could easily be rectified by making the exhaust pipe shorter. Updated 08/06/08.
