Intermittent power steering failures while car is in motion. One minute power steering functions, next minute, no ps at all. Power steering pump continues to run even when engine is off and key out of ignition. After returning to vehicle, battery is dead as a result of continuously running pump or fan.

After driving around town for 15 minutes power steering stopped working and had to struggle to turn a corner. Had to make a wide turn. If another vehicle had been approaching, there would have been a collision. Very difficult to control this vehicle when power steering fails. This loss of power steering has happened four times within last two weeks. Research on internet shows this to be more than a common problem; it seems to be widespread. This much I do know: it scared the hell out of me and is dangerous. If BMW doesn't voluntarily fix the problem, then the government should force a recall on all affected vehicles before someone is seriously injured or dies.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Mini Cooper. The contact stated while driving 35 mph the power steering failed. The vehicle was stopped and after a few minutes the power steering returned and the vehicle operated as designed. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been diagnosed by a mechanic but the contact was sure that the power steering pump was the cause of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 91,000. Dt.

Power steering pump failed at speed. Was very difficult to control the vehicle and presented a hazard to me and the vehicles around me. This is a common and known issue on many Minis of similar year, should not occur to due the safety hazards.

Intermittent power steering failure. After long drive ~150 a loud buzzing under car continued after car engine was shut off. Moving the steering wheel made the buzzing change sounds. Starting and shutting the car's engine did not resolve the buzzing. Disconnected the battery to avoid battery failure.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Mini Cooper. While driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The contact shut off the engine and after restarting, the vehicle regained power steering capabilities. The power steering continued to fail intermittently. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000. Kmj.

On a separate occasion the contact noticed that the electric power steering pump remained in continuous operated although the engine was turned off. When I got into the car to take it to the dealer, the power steering was suddenly working again. Prestige Mini claims that my strut towers ($645) and lower control arm bushings (also $645) were shot and needed replacing. The advisor told me verbally that it had nothing to do with the power steering pump and/or the power steering pump fan, but so far I cannot get prestige to reply via email (in writing) that this is true.

On 6/12/12 I was driving my car towards my small neighborhood at speed of 10-15 miles an hour. For no apparent reason the steering wheel felt as if it was locked in place. With all my force I had to pull over to the side. I had the car checked and confirmed that the hydraulic power steering pump has failed. There was no service engine light on or any warnings what so ever, the power steering pump failed without any notice. If I were driving at high speeds of 70 miles an hour on the freeway I could have seriously been hurt. This is unacceptable.

A trip to the dealership revealed that the power steering pump had failed. This seems like a known issue with most of the 2004 Mini Coopers, a defective part was put into the car while manufacting. Mini is not taking any responsibility of it, and the dealership is asking for $1200 to replace it. Due to the power pump failure, the temparature rises and may have caused damage to a few hoses around that area.
