4 Air Conditioner problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/27/2004

Air conditioner compressor does not disengage when the manual selector switch is moved from the defrost position. The only way to disengage the compressor after using the defroster is to stop the car, turned off the fan , move the selector switch to any function that is not defroster related, turn off the ignition and restart the car. This was discovered by my wife and I on our way back from florida last March. I could not get fresh air only. Upon my return to maine the dealer checked out my complaint and discovered that the owners manual covered this somewhat. A previous same complaint stated that this is covered by a service bulletin ntb03-048 dated 5-6-03 from Nissan concerning this problem. This is noted as a change in operation from earlier models. This a/c on off is different than previouly years of Nissan"s of which I have owned many. I believe Nissan should fix this problem.

5 Air Conditioner problem of the 2001 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/01/2004

When using the air conditiioning unit in the 2001 Nissan Altima, there is a buzzing or whirring noise during operation. Vehicle noise is annoying. I feel the value of the vehicle is greatly diminished as a result of the noise and will make it difficult to sell the vehicle as a result of the improperly functioning a/c. Under warranty, I have taken the vehicle back numerous times. The first time, the dealer replaced a clutch bearing, this did not fix the problem. The next time, the dealer replaced the condensing unit and expansion valve to attempt to repair the noise. The next couple of times the vehicle was taken to the dealer and was told that a request of Nissan USA was made to send a factory tech out to find a solution. Nissan refuses to send anyone out to look at the vehicle. Nissan wanted the dealer to find a similar vehicle to compare the noise, they have not been able to find a comparable vehicle to do that check. It has been almost a year since my original complaint and this has not been remedied. I am fed up with Nissan not taking care of my situation.

7 Air Conditioner problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/27/2003

A/c compressor does not disengage when the manual selector switch is moved from the defrost position. This is covered by a service bulletin ntb03-048 dated 5-6-03 from Nissan concerning this problem. This is noted as a change in operation from earlier models and I feel it is dangerous. The only way to disengage the compressor after using the defroster is to stop the car, move the selector switch to any function that is not defroster related, turn off the ignition and restart the car. If you don't there is at least a 10% loss in mileage due to the fact that the a/c compressor is operating and the temp selector must be adjusted up or the occupants of the vehicle will freeze. This was discovered by my wife and I on our way through chicago on I-94. I thought it was a simple warranty problem that I would be able to get fixed upon my return to waukesha. The service bulletin makes it seem that this is normal and the consumer will just have to live with the problem. Now that I know what is going on I feel this is not only dangerous and environmentally unfriendly but just another way the car manufacturer has decided to cut corners and not make two different relays for the manual and automatic climate control vehicles. I do not feel that I should have to carry blankets around in my car to keep me warm in June and July because my a/c will not shut off unless I restart my engine. What fool would do that on a busy interstate highway. This is not a dealer problem, this was in the vehicle when I bought it and that the way Nissan designed it. I understand that the vehicles with automatic climate control can hit the "auto" control and the problem stops. I don't have that button in my "manually" controlled heater/air conditioner. I hope that you will address this with Nissan. According to the service bulletin this problem started with most of the 2003 models. Thanks for your time.

12 Air Conditioner problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/25/2001

I started to brake my vehicle well before a red traffic light. In the line of traffic, I was braking firmly but my vehicle would not come to a complete stop. At the red traffic light, my vehicle kept bumping a BMW in front of me. I began honking my horn for the driver of the other vehicle to move forward, but she did not. With my foot constantly on the brake, I put my vehicle into park. When I did that, it accelerated more. A man in a truck in the next lane saw that I was having difficulty braking, so he shouted taht I should turn off my ignition. I did. The vehicle finally stopped. The driver of the BMW approached my car asking what was going on. The man in the truck verified to her that I was braking, but couldn't stop my vehicle from bumping her. We exchanged information. I drove my vehicle to my service mechanic nearby. He could find nothing wrong. I took the vehicle to the dealer the next day. The dealership mechanic checked the vehicle and a dts was also called to inspect my vehicle. The also could find nothing wrong with the brakes, but they did fix my air conditioner. It was leaking inside the car on the passenger side. The rug was completely soaked. The also could find nothing wrong. The vehicle is now parked (delivered by dealership) in front of my home because I am afraid to drive it. I have done research about these episodes called "spontaneous acceleration". I also see that you have complaints similar to mine that suggest the same problem exists in other Altima's, as well as other make and model vehicles. Hopefully, you will investigate this matter. I refuse to become a fatality statistic by taking the chance of driving my car and having this unpredictable event occur again. Nor do I want to hurt anyone else. I want Nissan to replace my vehicle. I have done other investigating on the internet in relation to "spontaneous acceleration". I am quit concerned that the NHTSA is not investigating these complaints.
