2 Starter problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/24/2017

Key fob is inserted in slot and all lights and guages will light up, windows go up and down, doors will lock and unlock, but when brake depressed and start push button is pressed car will not start. Battery less that 6 months old (just replaced in attempt to fix problem). Brake switch just replaced in additional attempt to fix problem. Nissan dealer in st. Louis lists this as a recall for 2010 models, dealer in marion, IL says it is not. Marion dealer replaced two parts [24167-zx00j harness -sub] and [25320-jn00a switch assy-stop lamp] at cost to customer of $567. For parts and labor. Car still would not start. Dealer stated that on "TSB" they "found similar concerns" and additional parts need to be installed listed in procedure," and "confirmed power is switching at bcm but not engaging starter need to replace bcm and diag further - quoted customer $569. 35 to replace bcm to fix other concern" (capitalization per dealer). I declined. Car was stationary in dealer shop. I have tried to speak with corporate Nissan, but have not had any satisfaction. My personal mechanic (has masters degree in auto mechanics) says it is a recall problem with recall listed on internet in March, April and may. Date given below is repair attempt at dealer. ## VIN passed ## Nissan Altima 2010 ##.

3 Starter problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/12/2016

Instrument panel does not light up and car will not start, it doesn't crank, not even a click form the starter, the steering wheel does not lock. Seems to be the electronic steering column lock (escl) as I googled for similar complaints of other owners. Nissan extended the warranty to 6 years on this issue, however cause they know this is a safety issue with this car. They should extend the warranty for a well known defect indefinitely. If this happens in the middle of nowhere is a very serious life and death issue. . Read more...

4 Starter problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

I have numerous starting problems and the vdc, abs, and slip light come on while driving. Sometimes it can take 4 or 5 tries until the vehicle starts with the push button start. The battery, alternator and starter have been checked and found to be in good working order. This is a safety issue as the numerous lights that come on while driving present a problem especially if the abs system light comes on while driving.

5 Starter problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/11/2016

Takata recal. We purchased vehicle used. Our 2nd Altima. Had problems about 6 months after getting the car. It wouldn't start. Brakes wouldn't even compress. Replaced battery and worked for a few weeks. Same issue continued. Cabin lights would come on, new battery but still not starting. Had starter replaced and worked for a while again. Same issue again. Get stuck in random places. Some days it starts, others it doesn't. Calling for a jum start doesn't work either. Unreliable and unstable. Called dealership, mossy Nissan. They wants over $200 just for diagnostic and then could be a number of problems. Also said break harness/switch seems to be a common problem. Vdc lights also come on at random times while driving. There seems to be a common issue with these models. Nissan should handle all repair expenses. Car was stationary at all times it wouldn't start. This week is wouldn't start 3 times. Last week it was 5 times. The whole month was 17 times out of 31 days. Please recall.

6 Starter problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/30/2015

My car was stationary in a grocery parking lot and push button starter would not start. It was the dead of winter with sub zero temperatures. The dash displayed an illuminated key indicating there may be something wrong with the intelligent key, so I replaced the battery in both keys and the car still would not start. I then tried to jump the car with no success. So I googled "car won't start, 2009 Nissan Altima" and that opened the flood gates. I read tons of complaints about this same part malfunctioning on the 2009 to 2011 Nissan. When I finally towed my car to the dealer, guess what--I had that very issue, something called the "steering lock malfunction". During my research, I even read an article that indicated Nissan was aware of the problem, and had extended their warranty to help, but that extension ended in March 2015 and Nissan would not complete a recall because it was not a safety issue. I say it is a safety issue. Again, my car stopped on me in the dead of winter in the middle of a cold snap. What I also read was that Nissan knew that at least 50% of these cars manufactured would have to have this part replaced and decided to leave the consumer on their own to pay for the repair. I viewed youtube videos where tons of consumers were doing desperate things to avoid spending the $1000 for this repair. They were pulling their fuses for the steering lock system. They were pulling out the part and banging on it. They were sticking a screw driver in the part to release the stuck mechanism to get the car to start. It's a shame that Nissan is aware that this part is defective and has the tendency to get stuck, resulting in disabling the push button starter and they won't do anything about it. I will never, ever, ever buy another Nissan car, especially not a 2009 through 2011. I wouldn't own another Nissan if they were giving them away. This company is unethical.

7 Starter problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/21/2015

The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Altima. While driving approximately 30 mph, the transmission shifted from drive into the neutral position independently and an abnormal noise emitted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but the mechanic was unable to duplicate or locate the failure. The contact experienced multiple unrelated failures with the vehicle that included the exterior door failing to unlock or lock with the key fob until after several attempts. A burning odor emitted from the air vents when the air conditioner or heater was activated. There were no flames present. Also, the brakes squeaked intermittently when depressed. The contact stated there was concern regarding a potential health hazard with the push button starter causing cancer. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 10,600.

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the engine stalled and the vehicle failed to start with the push to start button function. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the starter, the fuel line, and the steering column were replaced, but failed to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.

9 Starter problem of the 2010 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/15/2013

If I have to pump the brakes to get the car started, will I soon have to pump the brakes to stop?????? vehicle not recognize the key. Happened several times prior to 6/15/2013. Just thought the key needed to be charged. But on this date I pull up at a hotel, checked in and went to move the car and it wouldn't start. Sat for an hour or two. Replaced battery a few weeks prior so it wasn't that. Had to be towed to a pepboys. Too late for a dealership, a Saturday evening, and I was over 5 hours from home. The car was dropped off across from the bays therefore they were unable to connect the diagnostic machine. After setting for a couple more hours it finally crank. They said it was the starter, as of today I have not replaced the starter. In August it did it again twice while my 16 yr was driving it to school. A couple of times in September. I took it to the dealer on 10/14/2013, their diagnosis were: replace brake sw, sub harness, and tie straps. And now almost on a daily basis want start without pumping the brakes. I'm the only one that drives the car now because I'm afraid of the brakes eventually giving out.

10 Starter problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/11/2013

My husband went out to start the cars in the morning before work. The Nissan Altima would not start. The brake was firmly pushed and the brake lights came on. We have replaced the key fob batteries and the fuse for the engine starter. The key fob locks and unlocks the vehicle, but the car will not start. The desk shows a small yellow key symbol in the top left corner. We have contacted a mechanic about having the car towed. It seems several others have had this issue and Nissan is doing nothing about it. I will never, ever, ever purchase another Nissan.

11 Starter problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/23/2013

Amber 'intelligent key' light started appearing on and off. Finally vehicle refused to engage starter and whirring noise indicating steering lock is functional no longer happens. Vehicle needs to be towed and research indicates the problem is common in 2009 Altimas and other Nissan vehicles. Repair quotes online appear to be in the $900 range. Nissan needs to accept responsibility for this problem and issue a recall.

12 Starter problem of the 2007 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/19/2012

Back in 2012 my Nissan Altima starter switch failed to work. I took the car to a Nissan dealership location and it was determined that the brake light switch was faulty and had to be replaced. On March 15, 2015, the car exhibited the same issue, starter switch failed to work again. This time I took it to an independent mechanic, who again had to replace the same part, the brake like switch. I suspect that there are more Nissan vehicles with this same issue. The recall should be extended to other models and be tested for an issue with the starter/brake light switch.

13 Starter problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/16/2012

Entered vehicle, stepped on the brake pedal, yellow "step on brake pedal" lit up, pushed start button, the "acc" lit, and it went to "start" and nothing happened! all the dash lights turned on but no starter engagement or noise. I tried it several times and nothing happened. I called aaa for a tow. When tow truck driver came, I got into the car and it started! I went to the dealer and a cracked battery was found and replaced. In the last month the car has not started several times. My wife has gotten in an out of the car several times and it would finally started. Today,I went to the dealer and explained the situation and asked if there was a service bulletin concerning this issue. The service writer stated that there wasn't. He did say that the brake light switch (p/n 25320-ax00c) has been a problem on some vehicles. I had them check it and it was bad. I had to pay $127. 18! having this part failing in under 23,000 miles is very poor. I have had Nissan vehicles with over 100,000 miles and not had a brake light switch failure! this has left my wife stuck several times and very upset.

14 Starter problem of the 2008 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/04/2011

This vehicle is a 2008, Nissan Altima with 45,500 miles driven at the time of failure. We purchased the car new in early 2008. The problem started when, on several occasions, my wife could not get the car to start. Then on Nov. 4, 2011, I witnessed the failure myself. After contacting the texas aaa motor club and having them come and verify that the car's battery was fully charged and could run the starter, the car started without any corrective action being taken. The car was then driven to the local Nissan dealership and the service report complaint was entered "customer states vehicle will not start at times". On the invoice it states "cause: brake lamp switch failed - not sending signal to bcm for start". the replacement part was listed as a "25320-ax00c switch asm". The cost of the switch was $39. 17 with $52. 50 labor. Prior to repair, I was given the choice of the $91. 67 switch installation, or the installation of a different switch assembly and a replacement cable harness for approximately $250. 00. I chose the replacement switch option because the first switch lasted 45,500 miles, and if the second switch lasted that many miles, it would not need to be replaced until around the 90 or 95 thousand mile mark.

15 Starter problem of the 2007 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/05/2010

I have push button start. When I push the button it will click as if the battery is dead (new battery) and then nothing. I push 7 to 16 more times and then the car starts. It may do that several days in a row, several times on one day, or not for several weeks. I took it to my mechanic (not Nissan) and the diagnostic test showed nothing wrong. Mechanic thought maybe it could be a starter beginning to go bad but there was nothing to point to the starter. He called it a "ghost" problem because it comes and goes. It seems to me that the problem is the ignition switch. Once it catches, the car runs just fine. I believe my issue is related to the present Nissan recall although my car is not part of the group. I have not taken it to Nissan yet because it has been working for two weeks. I bought the car new in August 2007.

16 Starter problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/12/2008

I have had my Nissan Altima 2003 since may of that year. Starting a year ago I began to notice signals on my dash indicating check engine. I then was pulled over for a non working tail light. I had it fixed and a day later the bulb blew later. I changed the bulb three times before they issued a recall on that wire. Soon there after the check engine light would come on again now the car would shut off while sitting at the light. I then received another recall notice on the computer chip which causes a faulty signal to the starter. I took that in to get fixed. A month later the car would begin to shut off while I was moving. I took it back into Nissan, they exclaimed that there was nothing to fix. After the same occurence continued I then took it to other mechanics who would see that there was a faulty computer chip which needed to be replaced. In January of this year I paid about $1,800 in repairs and still the car would shut off while driving and I became scared to drive the car due to the severity. I then called customer care for Nissan which exclaims that I would have to have the car towed to them , pay $80. 00 again to see what is wrong. There is another recall on the Nissan Altima, pertaining to the computer which causes the car not to run. They deny this and I am left paying for a car that does not work. I don't know what else to do, but I have met other owners who are experiencing the same problem.

17 Starter problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/24/2005

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2. 5l. My car receives regular maintenance every 3 months and/or 3,000 miles (documentation can be provided), it never sits longer than 2 or 3 day, and it's driven on the highway for my work commute. Twice my car suddenly wouldn't start without warning. The first time it was fixed, which was around April, there were several recalls for my car. One was for the fuel pump screen and the engine sensor that would cause the car to not start or suddenly stop running. This second time (10-24-05), my local mechanic showed me a 6-page service technical bulletin that was issued by alldata for my non-starting problem. The document suggested replacing the starter, adding a Nissan brand fuel injector cleaner and/or reprogramming the computer to fix the problem. This second repair will cost me about $500 to fix when I pick up my car tomorrow. I thought the recall repairs would resolve this issue, but those repairs proved to only provide a temporary fix, but not resolve the underlying problem. Since there's a service technical bulletin about my non-starting issue, 2 recalls related to this same problem, and I've had the same problem happen twice, I think my car should be recalled. I'm fortunate that I wasn't driving the car when it stopped running or that could have caused a serious accident. I should not have the same problem happen twice in 6 months. If my car fails to start twice in 6 months and the recall repairs don't remedy the problem, then there must be something else causing the problem. I'd hate to find out in a few months that the $500 start replacement wasn't the culprit, because I'd be back at square one. Please tell me how I can get this issue escalated to a recall status or what I can do to prevent a 3rd failure. Thank you, jenny r. Baker.

18 Starter problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/02/2005

A few problems here. I bought this vehicle brand new. From the second I took it off the lot the heat did not work. I bought this vehicle in November, do you think I was happy? so they fixed this problem on a brand new car. Then last year in 2004 my car decided it would not start at all. Turns out it was the starter that went and that had to be replaced on a vehicle that was only a year old. So because of this I had to have my car towed from my driveway to the dealership. Then the latch broke off on the center console inside the vehicle. I am not rough using it at all. Its normal use for this latch yet it broke off after having the car for a year. The problem that I face now is that I cannot get out of my car!!!!!! I arrived home one day and found that the drivers side door would not open from the inside. I am 7 months pregnant and was very scared when I found this problem. What if there is ever a car fire or an accident and I cannot get out? you can open the door from the outside but not the inside. Hyannis Nissan claims its a door latch problem and it had to be replaced. So since my warranty just ran out I have to pay $192. 00 to get this repaired. Are you kidding me? on a 2004 vehicle? talk about unsafe and dangerous!!!! the last problem is that there is a bad smell coming from the vents in the vehicle upon turning the car on. Not sure what that problem is. Could that be hazardous to my health? not sure but it worries me with the baby I am carrying. I am sick and tired of paying for repairs when the problem is not me its Nissan yet I have to pay for it. And to think I have to pay $433. 00 per month for this vehicle plus pay for repairs that I can not afford. It's not fair and Nissan should have to pay.

20 Starter problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/18/2004

2002 Nissan Altima overheats, air conditioner and engine failures. Customer states that she has brought the car in on numerous occasions for the overheating, air conditioning, and engine failures. The consumer stated she was backing out of the driveway, when all of a sudden the engine light flashed and there was an immediate loss of power and no steering capability. The starter, engine control module and radiator were replaced. The thermostat was sticking which was one of the reasons the engine was overheating. The rear middle seat belt locked into place. The fuel door would not open when using the internal latch. The gear was difficult to get out of park.
