Nissan Altima owners have reported 28 problems related to battery (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Altima based on all problems reported for the Altima.
When driver attempted to start vehicle, all warning lights came on, all interior lights and headlamps & running lights came on, and vehicle became totally unresponsive, stranding driver & running down battery due to inability to turn any lights off or turn vehicle off. No controls related to electrical system were controllable. Some examples include: 1. Power door lock switches did not function (no effect from pressing). 2. Power window switches did not function (no effect from pressing). 3. Pressing the vehicle power / ignition button (modern equivalent of starting key switch) did not have any effect, whether short or long duration presses were used, and regardless of delay between key presses. 4. Headlights & running lights were on regardless of the switch position of the headlight control switch. This resulted in the driver being stranded. Because the vehicle's lighting would not turn off, the battery ran down, disabling the vehicle further. Vehicle was towed to a Nissan dealer. Nissan serviceman initially refused to write the customer problem description as per the customer description of the problem. Later, customer called back to the dealership to request the customer description include specific and correct information already provided by the customer such as vehicle was "completely unresponsive while all the warning light came [remained turned] on the vehicle. Doors would not lock or unlock. ", the dealer reported that the service technician found TSB ntb12-041. Dealer record reads: "reprogrammed [sic] bcm update as per TSB. Vehicle is now operating as designed [sic] after update. " vehicle has functioned normally since.

I drove my 09 Altima to the mall parked it, an hour later I tried turning it on and it wouldn't start. No crank, and it wouldn't even go to acc. I tried jump starting it and even change out the battery but no luck.

Bought vehicle new 14 months ago and the battery already had to be replaced. At my expense. Dealer service informed me may have trouble if not replaced. I wrote Nissan and they told me the following:
"Nissan is not in the position to provide vehicle service contract coverage or warranty coverage. Nissan depends on its Nissan dealers to provide any and all warranty coverage concerns as they are in the best position to assess the vehicle and determine whether a part is warranty or not. We recommend you continue to coordinate with your local Nissan dealerâ??s service department with any warranty inquiries. "
since Nissan itself will not properly look into the situation I will no longer purchase a Nissan and they have lost a loyal customer since 1972.

The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Altima. The contact stated the keyless ignition push button start and remote keyless fob failed to operate approximately four times. In addition, both key and battery warning symbols illuminated on the instrument panel intermittently. The contact replaced two key fob batteries and the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing where they were unable to detect a failure code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified which resulted in no resolution. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

2002 Nissan Altima. There is severe rust and corrosion in specific locations directly under both the driver and front passengers seats and floors. The corrosion appears to be related to two factory holes in the floor, one on each side of the vehicle. The corrosion on the passenger side of our car is less severe: a large area of rust but a relatively small hole (tennis ball size) through the sheet metal. The drivers side of the car has a large hole (soccer ball size) in the floor. This is the only major corrosion on the car (the "rear subframe" assembly was replaced in 2006 due to corrosion under a Nissan warranty program). The fuel filler neck is also rusty and does not seal properly, which can cause an engine alert when the fuel vapor seal leak reaches the point where the alert is triggered. There is little or no corrosion in the wheel wells or fenders. Based on two bids from auto body shops in this area, the cost to repair the rust damage will be between $2500 and $3200. I have taken photographs of approximately forty Altimas in this area. All but five have corrosion in this specific area to varying degrees. It is clearly not limited to only the car we own. Nissan has a warranty program which covers rust perforation for a period of five years from the date of manufacture. I have spoken to a number of people at a dealer in this area regarding this problem. They claim that Nissan is aware of this problem on 2001 through 2005 Altimas, but has chosen not to warrant it due to the expense, preferring instead to refuse to be responsible. Nissan will apparently take the cars in trade and sell them to wholesale auto operations where they are sold to customers who may or may not be aware of the problem. Updated ivoq 11/05/10
the battery was replaced. Updated 12/22/10.

My new Nissan Altima 2. 5 sl had a dead battery 4 times within 20 months of ownership. The vehicle was returned to Nissan factory service three times (one time the service department was closed) - but the problem never resolved. The problem has been widely reported on the internet and is not the battery itself, but related to failures in the vehicle electrical system and "Smart key" electronics. Nissan refuses to acknowledge or repair the problem.

I have had my car for 2 years and I purchased it at the baker jackson that I am referring to. In August I started to experience problems with the car shutting down with no warnings which is a safety hazard considering I drive mostly on the freeway. I took it into the shop and they claim they did a diagnosis and found that my battery was eroded so they had to cleaned the battery and fuel injection. Well after I paid and picked up my car the same thing happened a day later. To sum it up my car has been to the shop on the following dates 8/21/07,8/27/07,9/18/07 stayed there for days to weeks at a time and the problem is still unresolved. I am a teacher and a recent graduate student so I really don't have much money to be in and out of rental cars and get back a non-functioning car after every visit. The story I get when I speak to them is it runs fine when they drive it and they had it for two weeks at one time. I looked up my car online and many people have been having the same problem. I just want my car fixed so that I can go to work and come home safely with out endangering my life or anyone else. I did a little research on Altima?s 2004 ^ and found that many have been having engine problems and have the same symptoms that I am experiencing. ?on certain passenger vehicles equipped with a 2. 5l engine, a variation in temperature occurs due to the unique location of the sensor in the engine. Under certain driving conditions, these variations in temperature can be large enough to cause a brief interruption in the signal output from the sensor. If the interruption in the signal from the sensor is so brief that the electronic control module (ecm) logic does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without warning while the vehicle is driven at a low speed increasing the risk of a crash. ?
could you please help me investigate this so I can get to the bottom of this? I really appreciate you taking the time out to read my story.

After being involved in a 3-car accident on the NJ turnpike at 3:15p. M. The air bags did not deploy, everyone was wearing seat belts, yet no one was hurt, not even a whip lash. The left side sustained headlight and hood damage, drivers door would not open and it appeared that the radiator was busted since liquid was pouring out. We were towed to the nearest collision place and geico towed it from there to its own shop. Since the car was so new, geico had some difficulty in obtaining part numbers and cost. The next call from geico was to tell us that the car was totaled. The battery exploded. Battery acid eating most of the components under the hood. Question which was defective. . The air bags the electrical system or the battery why would a battery explode when the car did not have enough impact to deploy the air bags?.
The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Altima. On six occasions, while the vehicle was parked, all of the windows went down. The following day, the battery was drained. The dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The contact went through arbitration with the better business bureau, but did not win the case. The vehicle is currently still under warranty. The contact was informed that because he went through arbitration, the vehicle is his responsibility. The current mileage was 24,500 and failure mileage was 5,961.
I have two persistent problems with my 2001 Altima. Issue #1: the car randomly stalls at low speeds (0-10mph) with no check engine light. This problem began in October 2006. This problem results in a loss of power steering and power brakes which has caused many near accidents. There is no pattern or symptom to forecast when stalling will occur. The car has been in the shop (dealership and others) numerous times with mechanics never able to "duplicate" the problem. After spending hundreds of dollars on a new battery, lead wires, new spark plugs and spark plug wires, my Nissan mechanic said that he didn't know what else to do except "throw parts at it until something sticks. "
issue #2: the car idles roughly and shakes unless in neutral. The shop said the problem is the intake manifold gasket which is a $600 repair. A search on the internet provides an abundance of complaints about this problem. This should be a recall issue.

: the contact stated while driving 30 mph, the brake light illuminated just before all power failed in the vehicle. The failure happened 25 times. The contact was unable to steer to the side of the road, as the power steering failed during the power loss. After 45 seconds the engine could be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the service dealer for service. On a prior visit the service dealer replaced the battery. The manufacturer was not contacted.

: the contact stated when the ignition was turned, there was a loud bang from the front end of the vehicle. Afterwards, smoke came from the front end, below the driver side window, and brief flames erupted from under the hood. The vehicle hood was opened to reveal the battery had exploded. The vehicle was towed to a service dealer, where the dealer tested and replaced the battery. There was no determination made as to the cause of the explosion.

Hello in 2006 August, my 2005 brand new Altima's battery exploded and it was a miracle that me and my friend did not get hurt. When I called the dealership they told me warranty doesn't cover the battery. I had to get it towed to a third party shop where they replace my battery fuse (which I was told caused the explosion) and my battery. When I went over the dealership later they told me I should've brought the car over there. They claimed I was lying wheni said I was told by their service department that they don't cover the battery and did not even look at the car. Now, my front bumper is covered in battery acid and is not repairable. I called the custemr service did everything I could but they simply won't do anything because I did not take the car to the dealership which I would if they didn't told me they did not cover the warranty on the phone. I have my receipt of the battery fuse and battery replacements but I do not have access to the old battery. I'm very dissapointed and frustrated by this and don't know what to do. I'm not looking to get any kind of money out of this but I bought this vehicle brand new not to have any problems especially a batter exploding to my and my friends face. Thank you.
1. Car stalled and once I held the gas pedal down and was able to hold the key over and crank the engine a huge puff of black smoke came out of the car and it seemed to run fine, although the service engine light came on. It eventually went away after a week or so. 2) a week or so later I started the car, it turned over fine but had no power, it simply would not go. It did not even realize I was pushing on the accelerator. 3) I removed the key from the ignition in frustration and then tried again. The second time the car worked fine. It revved when I put my foot on the gas pedal and then took off just fine. 4) this began to be a more common occurrence and if I took the key out or waited a few minutes it would straighten up. 5) not now! the car won't move forward. And now it is even starting to stall out and flood. 6) now the battery even seems to be running down. This has all taken place in the matter of about the past 5 weeks and now it won't move forward or run at all.
On or about Jan. 20, 2006 while driving my vehicles' check engine light would come on and then the vehicle would cut off. We took it took it to fontana Nissan for repairs. The car was returned to us on Jan. 28, 2006. Maybe 2 - 3 hrs. After getting the vehicle, we were driving to l. A. Area and the check engine light came on again. We called the service mgr. At fontana Nissan and he said to bring it back and they would look at it on the following mon. Well, we never made it back because while we were in route home (fontana) I lost control of the car while it was shutting off on the 91 fwy. To the 605 interchange. After the crash, the car was towed and the insurance company repaired the external damages (body work) but the internal was not fixed. Then in June 2006 while driving home, the car cut off again. Fontana Nissan said it was the battery. So we purchased a battery. I refused to drive the car because we feel that the next time we might not be so lucky. In Jan. 2007 there was a recall on the Nissan Altima for the same problem we had and consequently caused the crash. We were being represented by a law firm but as time passed our warranty expired. I am very afraid to drive the vehicle. Which I have not driven since 2006. I would really appreciate someone's help in this situation.
My 2002 Nissan Altima stalled in the middle of a residential area for no apparent reason. The engine line, battery light and all other lights including headlamps, and hazard lights were blinking erratically or stopped working altogether. I called for a tow and asked the tower to check the battery and see if a "jump" would fix it. The car started again after the jump. I head off towards home. The car started losing power. Luckily, I made it home as the car stalled while in motion. If that would have happened on the freeway, my fiancee and I would have probably suffered an accident. There was somewhat of an unusual smell like burning plastic. Upon closer inspection, the low beam headlamp was burned through, but the source of the burning smell was coming from under the vehicle. There appeared to be a small fire, judging by the amount of smoke coming off from under the car, that may have stopped shortly after the car stalled.
New 2005 Altima 3. 5 se bought August 2005 1st month I had noticed a vibration in the steering at high speeds, and the vehicle pulling/drifting from left to right. This concern makes the vehicle unsafe to drive because you do not have a sense of control when driving, in addition when driving on a highway for a long period of time the vibration in the wheel makes your hands and arms fall asleep. It is always necessary after an hour or hour and a half to pull over and give your arms/ hands a rest. The dealer addressed this concern by balancing the wheels by road force balance (corrected specs - 21lbs road force down to 7lbs) no alignment issues were noticed. After 3 tips to the dealership for the vibrations I had noticed a clunk in the front end, it ended up being a strut that needed to be replaced. With the next trip the dealership the vibration in the steering was now evident at all speeds, it was still drifting, and a new "hum" had developed at random times while driving. The dealer unable to verify any of my concerns suggested that I go for a ride with the service manger. After that ride he suggested that I have my tires swapped for new ones of another brand. On my next trip to the dealer they swapped all 4 of my tires for another brand name and re-aligned the front suspension and front end. Throughout the winter the car ran ok other than some electrical problems that would kill my battery and the rear pillar airbags coming out. It was not until the spring that I was forced to bring my car down again for the vibration in the steering wheel and the clunk in the front end. The dealer could not verify any clunk in the front end but agreed that there is again a vibration and remedied the problem by adjusting the steering rack pre-load. Initially the vibration was reduced, but within a month it was back. The service manager admitted that adjusting the steering rack pre-load was only a "temporary fix" a "bandaid for the problem".
The caller's vehicle was accelerating from a stop light going 10 mph when it stalled. She could not get it started ,and had to have it towed to dealer. The battery light and the brake light came on. When she called the manufacturer, she was told she could drive the vehicle. There was no other indication that this was going to happen. Dealer has vehicle now and will call her when they have check it. Manufacturer was contacted and will call her back.

When the consumer turned on the engine the battery exploded. The consumer saw smoke coming from under the hood. The entire engine compartment was splashed with battery acid. There was no evidence that there was a problem. The consumer simply turned the key and the battery exploded.
Scheduled recall work on car on Friday, was notified that there was actually three recalls on my car (which I have owned for about a year, purchased used) thet needed to be done and that I need my 30,000 mile service done. $476 and later that afternoon, igot my car back. I noticed that the braked seem a little tight, but figured that was part of the service. The next day, Saturday, while merging from one freeway to another at about 65 miles per hour, car sounded like it caught a piece of thin metal under front right quadrant of car, after about 15 seconds noise stopped and nothing in road behind me. I notice my brake light came on. When I tried to change lanes, I realize I had lost the power steering function, the brakes lad loosened up (but functioning) and the air conditioning was now blowing hot air. I realize I had no idea where the hazzard lights switch was and niether I nor my passange could find it. After 2 more minutes passes going up a slow incline, the car started jerking at round 55 mph. At this point the battery light came on, as well as, the "service engine soon". Well no kidding, service engine soon! pulled into the emergancy lane and dropped my speed to below 25 miles per hour and the car stopped jerking. Fortunantly, I was just one mile from home at this point. Limped home and call dealership. The car had been towed to crown Nissan in birmingham. I was annoyed that the service man that took my call showed no empathy when I told him what happened on the fastest freeway in town . Additionally, I was angered by the receptionist when she came back to me from being on hold and knowing my perdictment, laughing and asking who I was on hold for.
Battery exploded when key turned to "on" position. Car was in garage. It was initial cranking of engine that day. A loud "boom" was heard. Upon investigation discovered top of battery in three pieces and a split in case next to neg terminal. Acid on underside of hood and surrounding area of battery. Pool of acid collected on garage floor.
While starting the engine there was a very loud boom, consumer stated smoke came from under hood, battery had exploded, dented the hood of vehicle and battery acid was inside and outside of vehicle. Cause is unknown. Took to mechanic and they replaced battery. Please provide any further information. Ts.
The consumer heard a boom noise after the vehicle was started. The battery exploded which caused the hood to open which was followed by black smoke. This battery was a Nissan permanent sealed battery which was original equipment.
