2 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/24/2016

Brake abs system failure. Subframe rust breaks the anti-lock brake system (abs) and renders the abs brake, traction control, and vehicle dynamic control systems inoperable. The slip, brake, vdc off (tcs off) lights all illuminate on the vehicle dashboard, notifying the driver of this problem. Further investigation into the problem demonstrates that the abs sensors and/or abs actuator fail on the vehicle due to a design defect that promotes excessive rust accumulation on abs components. The abs sensor failures disable all abs, traction control, and vehicle dynamic control systems. Driver and occupant safety is severely compromised due to the vehicle's significantly diminished steering and accident avoidance capability during emergency braking and crash avoidance situations (especially skid situations) due to the non-functioning abs, traction control, and vehicle dynamic control systems. Nissan is aware of the abs brake, traction control, and vehicle dynamic control system failures and the cause, but requests to Nissan to fix the systems are denied. Nissan has documented the problem in TSB ntb07-016(b) which shows Nissan has been aware of this problem since at least March 16, 2007. Nissan's TSB documentation shows how to correct the design defect on the vehicle by grinding the subframe and replacing defective parts with Nissan redesigned parts.

3 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/08/2014

I took my car to Nissan to have my car totally checked over . The abs light came on and I had sharp jerks from the transmission and hesitation around 40 mph . The timing chain also had a rattle when the car was started. My abs system had failed due to water shorting out the abs sensor which destroyed the abs control module repair cost 1200. 00 . When I told the service advisor my abs light was on, he had a service bulletin at his station with exactly what he thought was wrong with my car and he told me it was a common issue with my car. The transmission needs a valve body due to premature wear cost 3500. 00 to rebuild and install new valve body design . The timing chain has guides that wear and chain rubs against plastic then down to metal repair cost 1500. 00. Nissan needs to fix all of these defective cars and pay the people who have made these costly repairs.

4 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/26/2013

Abs braking system failure and actuator defect; abs system sensors and hubs previously replaced in August 2009 after notification to Nissan. Nissan has failed to notify public of an abs system design defect and to issue a recall although it has known about the problem in its vehicles since approximately 2004 and the dealers have been issued an advisory. Failure of these components can lead to failure in proper braking, significant reduction of engine power, loss of speedometer, and reportedly fire. Nissan also has been notified of re-ocurrence by complainant and refused to take responsibility for repair.

9 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

06 Nissan Maxima. Failed right rear abs sensor. Per the dealer, a design flaw causes moisture to build up and causes the abs sensor to fail after time. Had to purchase new sensor, cap, and hub. The new sensor and cap do not fit the original wheel hub so a new one had to be purchased. The mechanic also had to modify the hub by drilling a hole in it to allow moisture to escape to prevent the same problem from happening. In talking with the dealership, they have had multple Maximas in for this repair. One dealership didnt have the parts needed as they've had so many repairs.

10 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/12/2011

My wife was driving home in our Maxima from work and when she pushed the brake pedal it felt very soft and the pedal travel was a lot more than normal. She was afraid to drive the car and stopped at a friends house and called me at work to come and look at the car. I drove it and noticed also that the brake pedal was much softer and the brake pedal went farther to the floor. No warning lights were on in the car. The car would stop when I braked hard so I decided to drive about 5 miles to our Nissan dealer. While driving there I heard a clunk/thump sound several times from under the car and the car would slow down and shudder a bit. I had to push the gas pedal down a lot more than normal to get the car up to 50 mph. The Nissan dealer found that the both rear abs sensors were failing. They said the abs sensors were rubbing on debris which had accumulated in the hub cavity. They had to clean out the drain for the cavity and replaced both damaged abs sensors. It seems to me that the hub cavity design was a faulty one if it let debris accumulate and jeopardize an important safety feature like the abs system. There apparently was a technical service bulletin related to this issue- but no recall had taken place. I wasn't real happy about the $975 repair bill.

11 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/11/2011

I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima - the abs system has failed, Nissan is claiming a $2000 repair. I have known and read of several dozen other owners with the same year and model having this problem. This is a manufacturer failure and needs to be recalled and repaired.

12 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/27/2011

The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Maxima. The contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle decreased acceleration to 20 mph without warning and despite that the accelerator pedal was being depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed that the abs sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and the current mileages were 36,300.

13 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/02/2011

Just driving along, my boyfriend as the driver, and I as the passenger, and as he applied the brakes, there was a loud clanging/rapping sound out of the blue, whereas it scared me so, that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It would then happen again and again. Then I started to notice a low hum (abs controller), just prior to this happening. So I researched this on the internet, and suspected the abs. I then entered 2006 Nissan Maxima abs, and bam. . . All over the net were testimonies of abs failure (where debris gets trapped in the rear hubs, with no escape). Living in PA, with harsh winter road conditions, an accident waiting to happen . . . This scares me! Nissan is aware of this serious and expensive defect, and a TSB was sent to the dealership service departments. A Nissan certified tech said to stop driving the vehicle, so I did until I got it to my mechanic. I downloaded the TSB for my mechanic to follow. He cleaned out the rear hubs, but did not drill any holes, nor mess with any sensors. I have had my car back for 2 days now, and 'the problem' happened twice. I purchased this (expensive) luxury vehicle, and as of today, I have one payment left. This makes me sick! there is no doubt that this a manufacturer defect, and I do not understand why there has not been a recall on this serious matter. I do not know where to turn next.

14 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/28/2009

Abs system failed after 5 years and 44,000 miles. Needs $2000+ to repair. This is unacceptable, especially since this is not an isolated incident. This has happened to many, many other owners of this make/model car. Nissan issued a TSB but will not accept responsibility.

15 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/28/2007

Unable to stop vehicle - brake failure on dry pavement. When brake pedal was applied, there was only a clicking sound as if the abs was trying to engage for no reason - but brakes would not engage at all. Dealer later reported that this was due to a faulty abs sensor on left rear but I am disturbed that this abs failure would cause total brake loss. I am afraid to drive this car for fear of another abs sensor going without any notice. I have had several other brake problems with this vehicle since I purchased new in 2002. The rotors have had to be replaced 4 times on vehicle with less than 55k miles (mainly highway miles). Dealer admitted that there is a problem with rotors warping on this car for no apparent reason. In addition,I had the back brake calipers seize up on me for no apparent reason while driving on turnpike.

16 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/06/2006

The contact stated the abs had failed multiple times. During the first occurrence the brakes did not function. Upon inspection the dealership determined the right abs sensor had to be replaced. The right sensor was replaced. The second failure occurred after the vehicle had been through the carwash. The brakes required more pressure to function properly. The sensor light stayed on for a couple of days. The problem went away by itself. In October 2005 there was a vibration in the steering wheel. After the dealership inspected the vehicle they replaced the brake rotors. When the problem returned the abs light had come on and went off two days later. The brakes worked when the light came on and failed when the light went off. Upon inspection the dealership determined the left abs sensor had to be replaced. The repairs had not been made.

17 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/01/2002

In late November 2002 while driving the abs brake failed which resulted in an accident. When the brakes were applied the vehicle slowed down but never stopped. Prior to the accident in Feb 2002, the abs sensor went out. And repairs were made to the abs system in Aug 2002.

19 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

2002 Nissan Maxima had abs module failure. Consumer states that the brakes failed without warning. The consumer stated the problem began with a very loud ear piercing screeching noise when the brakes were applied. The sound was intermittent, so it was difficult for the dealer to duplicate. The consumer went to the dealer several times to have the brakes checked, but they were found to be ok. The consumer stated on one occasion, her husband applied the brakes and the vehicle did not stop, the abs came on as he approached the intersection. The dealer informed the consumer the abs actuator and the rear abs sensor had failed. The screeching noise was due to a bad wheel bearing.
