The abs control module on the Nissan 2004 is not only faulty but dangerous. The problem comes from a short on the passenger rear wheel sensor short which in turns causes the abs module to fail. The abs motor will run even without the key in the ignition causing the battery and motor to become very hot.

Abs system failure, sensors inexplicably went bad driving down the road. When the abs system trips it cuts power to the accelerator while in traffic making it a hazard. Once the failure happened it happens continuously. Nissan has done nothing to fix this issue, and I was told by a technician at a dealership that this has been a recurring problem with the 2005 and 2006 Maxima models.

Grinding noises detected from applying brakes on Thursday 4/3/08. . Car taken to Nissan repair shop to determine cause of problem. Diagnosis is abs system failure and rear right wheel sensor failure. There was no warning light from the abs system to indicate a problem contacted Nissan headquarters on Monday 4/7/08 which is same day the car was taken to repair shop. I have requested some assistance from headquarters with no reply as of this date. Repair bill +- $2,300. 00 to get my car back on the road.
Malfunction of the rear anti-lock brake system. It has happened to each of the rear brakes, within 40,000 miles. The dealer who repaired this problem related that this is not a rare occurrence.

Anti-lock brake and all actuator failures. Started making a bit of noise prior to failure. As a result of the failure, anti-lock, anti-skid, vsc, do not work. I have purchased approximately $1800 in parts.
2004 Nissan Maxima se. Anti-lock brake (abs) components failing, there is also a service bulletin on the Nissan website describing ways to fix or replace parts, but very expensive. This is absolutely a public safety issue. The abs did kick on under normal braking and now the abs motor is stuck running, the brake and abs lights are on and the abs system will no longer activate in a dynamic sliding condition. The abs motor continues running even when the vehicle is turned off and the key is removed. The fuse and motor get extremely hot and may potentially cause a fire in the vehicle if the battery is not disconnected overnight. There are a number of different posting on the web about this problem and at least 3 different Nissan dealerships that I have called are aware of this being a problem with this model.
The contact owns a 2001 Nissan Maxima. The abs and check engine warning indicator lights illuminated. While driving 2 mph and greater, the brake pedal would pulsate when depressed. The mechanic stated that the brake sensors needed to be replaced, but could not determine why the check engine light was illuminated. The failure mileage was 53,000 and current mileage was 54,000.

After washing my automobile, the anti lock braking (abs) warning light illuminated indicating that I no longer have abs. The consequence is reduced braking performance in emergency situations. In an emergency such a failure would eliminate my ability to perform avoidance maneuvers while braking which is the purpose of the abs system. Under normal driving conditions it would significantly increase stopping distances. The manufacturer's authorized dealer representative stated that the left rear speed sensor failed and that the cost of replacement would be at my expense. The car has 64,500 miles. According to the dealership representative such drive components are warranted for the first 60,000 miles only. This system should be impervious to the effects of a garden hose rinse. The only alternative is to replace the speed sensor and hope that such a failure does not occur while I am driving.

Ignition coils have failed and been replaced and now abs/tcs indicator lights flash on and off; dealer told me abs was not operational if the light was on, but abs is operational based on self-test on the road. Based on the number of electrical/ignition complaints, it is clearly an electrical problem that Nissan and/or the dealer is not addressing.
