5 Steering Column problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/11/2019

The wheel is turn slightly to the right so it seems like it's perfectly straight but in reality it's not. Now do you see I have put the marks(this is where I'm noticing unalignment) if I put the wheel perfectly straight the wheel and steering column plastic will not be aligned from the right side. Now the car holds its lines, does not pull to the left or right. I'm just wondering if it's mechanical or plastic cover went off a bit or it's been like that all the time. Kinda strange to notice. Its really dangerous sometimes cause I am trying to make it straight and I find my self going slightly to the left. I told my dealership about this and all he responded . . . Oh well no more perfection these days. Not professional though I have been driving Maxima's for a while now I have never found a single imperfection like this.

When looking up my make model and year of car, your site seems to indicate a "suspension/strut insulator cracking" problem, however, when I contacted the Nissan dealership, they say for my VIN # there is only one recall and it is for a "steering column" problem . I just want to know all the facts before I take it in for repairs this Thursday, March 29, 2018.

12 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/27/2016

Electronic steering column lock (escl) warranty extension. I am a recently divorced single mother trying to survive in this tough economy. I park my vehicle at work, and I work near an airfield, at fort lauderdale airport. Imagine my surprise while on lunch break, I push to start my vehicle and nothing happens. I was stranded. Many of my male colleagues attempted to help me, thinking it was the battery, or a possible fuse, but nothing they did could start my vehicle. One suggested I contacted Nissan service to explain what was going on. . . And before I could finish my sentence of what lights were on my dashboard, the service employee knew it was the steering lock column. I ended up getting my vehicle towed (about $70) to the Nissan dealership and had to leave my vehicle overnight. I had to rent a vehicle for two days and had to pay late fees because I wasn't able to pick up my toddler from daycare before they closed. The following day, and within 40 minutes the Nissan dealership opening, they called to let me know my car was now fixed and it would cost me $1200!!! I'm sure it took less than the 40 minutes to repair my vehicle and I was paying over $400 for labor. I never heard of this mechanical failure concerning my vehicle but after researching, I am now seeing the plethora of complaints and I am super disappointed with Nissan over the fact that this was not considered a recall. I shudder at the thought of being stranded with my son in an inconvenient or dangerous location. Then to find out there is nothing I can do recoup my expense. I had to open a trade line to cover the expense because I cannot afford to spend the cash I have at this time. This is just not right and it is certainly not fair, not to me or anyone who has been affected by this. I would greatly appreciate someone looking into this issue and push the recall to indefinite.

13 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

The steering column lock module broke. The car would not start or drive. I had driven it to a home. Stopped the vehicle, turned it off. When I got back in, it did not work at all. The car would not recognize my intelligent key. Pushing the start button did nothing. It did not even light up.

14 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/08/2016

My car was parked and wouldn't start when I went to crank it. I thought it was the battery but upon installing a new ine, the car still wouldn't start. I had it towed to the Nissan dealership and was told it's the steering wheel column and it would be $1000 to repair.

15 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/14/2015

Unexpectedly, after driving one kid to school this morning, vehicle (stationary) would not start to drive my other kid to middle school. The electronic steering column lock (escl) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft prevents the vehicle from recognizing my key (fob), no regular key is issued, just button start. In my vehicle the escl may malfunction after the vehicle is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. Still waiting to hear the dreadful call from the dealer (have to be towed and I am not even done making payments for my 2010 Maxima) to see what the damage will be or if covered under an extended warranty. Not because the vehicle is in park, means it is not a safety issue. If you are stranded with a non reliable car, it is a safety issue, it can be in the middle of the mountains or the middle of a desert, no way to start a car if no mechanic key is issued and the only option, the fob, is not recognized by your own car.

16 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/11/2015

I was driving along a highway at 50 mph. When the steering wheel suddenly fell to my knees. This car has a retractable steering system. I was able to steer the car safely to the side of the road. I did not drive the car. The steering wheel was then able to be pushed back into the driving position. I brought the car to the dealership today, and they told me that the two electric motors in the steering column were defective (had to be replace) the cost woulkd be $2,000. The car has just 60,000 miles.

17 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/24/2015

Unable to start vehicle, steering column won't unlock. Occurs when vehicle is parked. Seems to be a well known issue with the steering mechanism unable to properly signal the bcm. Stranding the driver.

18 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/24/2015

On Feb 24, 2015, I got into my 2010 Nissan Maxima to take son to school and car would not start. After doing a host of troubleshooting (battery, fuses) nothing turned up. Had it towed to the dealership and diagnostic test determined the electronic steering column was defective. I did some research on this issue and discovered millions of consumer complaints about this issue. Nissan was well aware of problem and recalled the 2009 Nissan Maxima models , and extended the recall warranty til Feb 2015 to fix issue. However, they did nothing for the 2010 models. When you purchase a car, you are robbed at the dealership and robbed again of your hard earned minimum wage income due to shoddy workmanship that cost thousands. Lesson learned never buy a Nissan Maxima.

19 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/18/2015

I went to start my 2010 Maxima and it wouldn't start. I thought it was the battery, so I changed it. No difference. Then I saw that the key indicator was lit on my dashboard. So I checked my key fob, it was fine. Then I began to google the issue and saw that there was a recall on the 2009 altima/maxima's on the electronic steering column lock (escl). I read that owners of Maxima's would remove the bottom dashboard and jiggle or tap the escl and the car would eventually start. I tried this remedy, and it worked. . . Temporarily. The light went off but the very next day it came back on. I was hesitant to start my car after the incident. The car started but the light stayed on. I assumed that there was an electrical issue, but since the car started I went on about my daily routine. Then it happened, I was away from my home, on a date, in the snow, and it wouldn't start again. There I was trying to start my car without tools in the snow!! there are countless complaints about this issue on the internet. Many have gone unresolved, and there are many unsatisfied Nissan owners out there. I love my Maxima, but I am very unsatisfied with Nissan and how they have handled this issue. Especially since they admitted fault with the 2009 model, yet new models still have the same issue. I contacted Nissanassist. Com and filed a complaint and was told that they we're sorry but that they would not assist me.

20 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/12/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated the when trying to start the vehicle the "no key" warning light illuminated, as a result the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 82,000. Mc.

21 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/10/2015

I get in my car by opening the doors with my intelligent key (in other words, the battery isn't dead). Once inside the car, the key light blinks on even though I had the key in my hand. I can't start the car or even press the brake in, the car won't go into acc mode because it doesn't detect the key (again, I'm able to lock, unlock doors, open hood and even sound off the alarm through the same intelligent key. . ?) . I put the fob into the slot and it flashes to eject it. . . Now my car will not start and my windows are stuck down. . . I went to get my other key fob and still doesn't read the key. . . Now my car is stuck and I can not drive it. . . Soooo what I have tried to do was beating on the steering column, making it tilt and all over n over and nothing. . . Unplugging the battery for over 30 minutes in hopes of 'restarting' the alarm system putting in the intelligent key into the slot where the key goes (off the left side of the steering wheel) . . Still key light blinks indicating I need a key. . . . Now looking this up there are alot others with this problem with a 09-10 Nissan Maxima and the gtr has same issue and a recall was done on that. . . So can we please get a recall on the 09 nissian Maxima so this can be solved for myself and others?.

22 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

My car would not start was able to open the doors to the car but could not start the car. Car was towed to Nissan service station was told the steering lock had to be replaced for internal failure and it was no longer under warranty. $899. 67 dollars later and as I'm leaving the service station I'm told my warranty was up by a few days and also Nissan had extended the warranty for 2009 models but not 2010 models this is a copy taken from Nissanassist. Com released in 2013 (q1. What is the reason for warranty extension? a. To ensure customer satisfaction. Model year 2009 altima and Maxima vehicles are equipped with an electronic steering column lock (escl) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft. Nissan has determined that on a small number of vehicles, due to a manufacturing irregularity that has since been corrected, the escl may malfunction after the steering column is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. What will be the corrective action? a. Nissan will extend its new vehicle limited warranty coverage for the affected part numbers from its original duration of 36 months/ 36,000 miles to 72 months/unlimited miles ) I investigated on line and there are many complaints by owners with 2010 models that have this same problem Nissan admits to a manufacture problem how can they not be responsible for replacing it free of charge for all 2010 with the same problem.

23 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

24 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/23/2015

After driving my vehicle to the post office and parking I proceeded to restart my vehicle and exit the lot. The steering column locked and the car would not start. The model of my car is push start with no other alternate option. I was forced to have my car repaired by the dealer totaling over $1100. 00 and no assistance from the manufacture who has had numerous issues in the past for the same mechanical error. My vehicle is a 2010 Maxima and Nissan has so far only issued a warranty extension for 2009 editions which had the same error.

25 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

I tried to start my car this morning but the car would not start. There was yellow light that said key and when I tried to depress the break nothing happened. There was an extended warranty for the 2009 Maximas for the same exact issue that I have - its due to the stearing column locking. No extended warranty was given for the 2010's which is wrong because clearly there still a problem with the steering column that was not fixed for the 2010 models but Nissan stated that is was infact fixed and no warranty/discount/etc will be given for the 2010s. I will have to pay over $1000 for faulty design due to Nissan. Never buying another Nissan again!.

26 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

27 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/21/2014

I own a 2010 Nissan Maxima on November 21, 2014 after leaving work. I notice a yellow indicator light on my dashboard. Initially I thought my key fob had a weak battery, so I called my brother to pick up my extra valet key. However that did not work, I was eventually towed to the Nissan dealership where my car was diagnose for a failure in the electronic steering column lock (escl), as a result of consistently trying to start the car my battery failed too. Consequently, I had to pay for the escl part and a new battery, I was out of pocket $1286. 00 due to the warranty do not cover the escl part in 2010 Nissan Maxima’s. I contacted Nissan north America consumer affairs and was denied a reimbursement due to being out of the warranty protection 36 months/36,000 miles. After further research I see this is an ongoing issue with several consumers. I will be doing my due diligence to ensure that this matter is more than just identify by Nissan but that a reimbursement plus extended warranty is awarded to all 2010 Nissan Maxima’s owners that can provide proof of this matter.

28 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/19/2014

After getting back into my car after dinner, my car would not start. The steering wheel moves, but the brake pedal was locked. The push ignition switch would only go in the "lock" position. The "key" icon was lit up on the left side of the dash. Putting the fob key into the slot (the back up way of starting the car) also did not work. From what I read on line, many 2009-2010 Nissan models have had this problem, which has been attributed to a steering column lock mechanism that doesn't disengage. I imagine this will cost me about 700-1000$ to fix, not to mention the cost to tow the vehicle to the Nissan dealership.

30 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/16/2014

My 2010 Maxima had a defective electronic steering column lock which prevented me from starting the vehicle and I had to tow it to the dealership. I was stranded on a major thoroughfare in cold weather with no heat for several hours as a result. The steering lock was replaced by a local dealership at a cost of $1000+. The 2009 Nissan Maxima model had the same exact problem. Nissan currently has a campaign to address the issue on the 2009 Nissan Maxima but refused to address the issue on my 2010 model after I've called them and submitted a case with Nissan consumer affairs. I've informed Nissan that this problem is also happening on a lot of 2010 models as per the 100+ complaints on the NHTSA website and various other internet blogs but nevertheless after a week of reviewing my case, Nissan refused to address the repair nor extend the existing campaign to the 2010 Maxima model.

31 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/07/2014

I have had several complaints with my 2009 Nissan Maxima, first I keep having to replace the battery which I received a new battery from the dealer in January of 2013 with an 84 month warranty, well today the battery died again. I have had issues with the steering colum since I purchased the vehicle in August of 2008. The first time steering column locked and the vehicle had to be towed to dealer and was replaced under warranty. It was replaced again the next few months and I was told it was the battery and then several months later stopped working again the up and down function. Second the vechile suspension was supposedly replaced due the recall . . . But I was told recently by dealer that it need to be replaced again and they were trying to charge me over $1200 for a recalled item. Which I refused to pay.

32 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/19/2014

I drove my 2010 Nissan max to church. . . The vehicle was working perfectly and we had just recently had it serviced. When I got in vehicle to leave church the vehicle would not start. The key fob would lock and unlock the door but nothing else would come on. There was a light on the dash showing a key but nothing else worked. I had the vehicle towed to the Nissan dealership the next day and was informed the electrical steering column lock switch was not working and needed to be replaced. Repair would cost $1100. I was informed no recalls for 2010 but 2009 altima and Maxima had same issues and recall was done for that year only. I am so upset and disappointed with Nissan especially after reading all the other complaints as well. We have always owned Nissans but I am totally reconsidering my next vehicle purchase.

Failure Date: 09/13/2014

I went to the store to buy some groceries before work. When I returned to car my intelligent key wouldn't work. I was stranded in the parking lot. The steering wheel column is locked in the down position making it very difficult to steer with the wheels hitting my knees and extremely hard entering and exiting the vehicle. I am unable to adjust the steering wheel column at all. There is a very loud grinding noise coming from the column, which seems to be the motor or electrical component/ gears.
