36 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

The steering column can be adjusted to a user's preferred position. I have experienced a gradual "falling" of the steering column position. I can readjust using the electronic adjustment lever, however it will again "fall" in position, blocking the view of the speedometer gauge. The change is so gradual that it is not noticed until it blocks the speedometer, which if that occurred at the wrong time, could cause a driver to inadvertently travel at an unsafe speed, and lead to an accident.

37 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

My steering column went out with the car having 62,000 miles there is a recall on the 2009 but not the 2010. To fix this issue it was 900. 00 and Nissan refused to provide any assistance and its a known issue with their cars. I was very disappointed the car just stopped working out of no where and was completely locked up.

38 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/08/2014

Same as everyone else with the electronic steering column lock malfunctioning on a 3 and 1/2 year old car. This is absolutely ridiculous that a part that should last the life of the car fails so often and even more ridiculous that Nissan is not extending the warranty or recalling it for the 2010 models. Not to mention that the part is on back-order and who knows how long I am going to have to come out of packet for a rental and OH by the way waiting to pay $1300 plus to get this fixed. This is so upsetting. . . Nissan should stand by their products and recognize the fact that their design for that part obviously did not work. Nissan should also do right by their customers and take care of this issue.

39 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

I have a 2010 Nissan Maxima sv and all was well until one morning I dropped off my son at school on a frigid 5 degree morning and tried to restart the car. The push start wouldn't work and I was forced to call a tow truck to take the car to the dealer. After evaluation, the part is the steering column lock which was defective. The same part that in the 2009 Maxima and early 2010 was defective and provided extended repair warranty by Nissan. It only got worse, Nissan's replacement part for this has been on a national backorder since last month. After having to rent a car, pay for a tow, and now I wait endlessly for a part to fix a car that cant even be started, I was told by Nissan that the part will not be covered for my car under the extended warranty. I was called each each to update me on the potential ship date of the part, only the next week to be called again to tell me it maybe another few weeks. This is shame on Nissan, at least Toyota and Honda will recall and fix a known problem. How could this not be a safety issue when the your car can leave you stranded in dangerous temperatures without any prior notice.

40 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/04/2014

Went to work park the car with no problems, came out of work car would not start. Thought it was the batteries in the remote due to the yellow light with the intelligent key on the dash, and then remember I just replaced the battery. The doors would unlock and lock with no problems, the brake petal would not go in. Then thought it was the battery hood up a charger and it read it was on 70% charged, called the dealer they told me to have it towed in. The dealer called me the next day and told me it was the steering column, when I asked them why would it do this the only answer they had for me was this has been a problem with this year make and model. With the towing and the diagnostic check and the part with labor it's costing me over 1,000 dollars, the standard warranty does not cover any of this, all out of pocket. I just got rid of a 2008 gl 450 Mercedes Benz, because of having problems with it, I have a 4 year old visually disabled child that I am constantly traveling long distances to medical appointments so this is absolutely unacceptable to me. I always have loved Nissan and this is my 4th Nissan and was planning on purchasing a pathfinder in the falltime. When I purchased this car I stood by the dependability of the name, and I'm very disappointed.

41 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/02/2014

Electronic steering column lock malfunctioned on me, this is a issue for the 2009 Maxima (recall) which the 2010 also has same part and same malfunction and still does not have recall,I paid over a $1000 for this part which I really cant afford.

42 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/28/2014

My 2009 Nissan Maxima will not start. The yellow key light on the left comes on briefly. I had it towed to a repair shop and was told it is the steering column lock module. Part is not available due to a high failure rate. . The dealer, repair shop and the tow truck driver all noted this is happening frequently. This was also confirmed by some internet research. I think a nationwide recall is in order. Drivers are being stranded with no warning.

43 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

The vehicle would not start or move due to the malfunctioned electronics steering column lock control assembly. Car had to be towed to the dealer. The part was on back-order due to the fact that many Nissan 2009 and 2010 models having this same exact issue. Had to wait for five days to get it repaired, and no loaner car was provided. The repair cost was over $800. The vehicle is less than three years old and has only 45000 miles on it. This seems to be a known issue with many altimas, Maximas, and 370zs. . . Nissan is aware of the issue but extended warranty on electronic steering column lock (escl) only for 2009 altimas and Maximas. This is definitely a design flow on the part of Nissan and as such should be covered by extended warranty or recall for 2010 models as well.

44 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/15/2014

My 2009 Nissan Maxima will not start. The yellow key light on the left comes on briefly. I had it towed to the dealership and was told it is the steering column lock module and that it will cost over $900 to repair, not to mention over $100 for the diagnostic exam. I don't feel consumers should have to pay for a problem that they have not caused. It's apparent that this is happening frequently according to the research I have done. I feel that Nissan should pay this cost.

45 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/13/2014

Steering wheel motor started grinding and locked in the lowest position difficult to steer in that position until fixed called Nissan and they said there was no campaign, extended warranty, or problem they know of. They admitted to extended warranty on push button ignition replaced motor at a cost of $420 Nissan is ignoring the hundreds of complaints I have seen on the internet forums, problem occurring in 2009 Maximas and muranos. The dealership said they replace 2-3 a week. If it is true, at every dealership it is about 40 % of all Maximas sold in 09 have the bad motor which costs $189. Nissan needs to cover the cost for this defective motor !!!!!! the start button and steering column are related parts !!!!!!!.

46 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

What we are experiencing with our 2010 Nissan Maxima very closely aligns with the symptoms of the recall campaign issued in September 2009 for the 2010 Maxima. Nissan has been notified, however, they insist that my VIN number is not a part of this former campaign. I struggle to believe this as it's just too ironic that everything aligns with the former. We experience 3 problems with the suspension and steering. 1. ) at minimal speed mainly at initial acceleration, when turning slowly, and when braking at slow speeds you feel a jolt in the steering column and can hear a thud or clunk in the front passenger side. 2. ) when the car reaches approximately 60 mph, the steering column bounces erratically and 3. ) both at low speeds and high speeds the car pulls/veers to the right. This issue has been going on since I purchased the vehicle in 2013 and continues to occur. I have brought the car into a Nissan-authorized dealer and they say nothing is wrong. I have brought the car into the Hyundai-authorized dealer where I bought the car from and they say nothing is wrong. I have brought the car to 4 additional, independent mechanics/technicians and they also cannot get to the "root" of the problem without having the car for an unrealistic amount of time for diagnosis. I have already had to purchase a lifetime alignment and balancing package from a local repair shop as well as I had purchased new wheels and tires thinking that was the issue. Regardless of what I do or where I take it, the issues continue. I am very concerned and cannot drive at ease knowling there is something wrong with the steering and suspension. I also have a 4 year old child whose safety I am concerned with when she drives in our Maxima with us. Nissan didn't seem to care about my concerns, they simply told me my VIN doesn't align with the former campaign and then sent me on my way. Someone, anyone, please help.

47 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

I was at the store went in came out car wouldn't start had to call tow truck Nissan said steering column was locked and if part is not covered under warranty the part will cost $800 I haven't had this car six months . This is a Maxima 2010.

48 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/24/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that after shutting her vehicle off the steering column would not move up or down. The contact then restarted the vehicle and the steering column dropped lower than normal. The vehicle was later taken to the dealer. After diagnosis, they advised her that the steering column fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure and current mileages were approximately 55,000.

49 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/04/2013

Upon attempting to start the car, ignition would not change from "lock" to "acc" or "on". Intelligent key warning lamp was lit steady on dash. Steering wheel column was not locked. All power and other functions worked (lights, door locks, etc). Battery is fine. Dealer found steering lock control module part 48700-9n00a faulty and replaced with steering lock control module part 48700-9n00b. Similar part on Nissan gtrs was recalled, part number 48700-jf00a or 48700-jf00b, being replaced by 48700-jf00c same part number is failing for Nissan 370zs as well, same years and same part number 48700-jf00a or 48700-jf00b, yet they are not being recalled. This problem is also occurring in Nissan Maximas and Nissan muranos in all models of Nissan this part was removed in mid 2010 due to consistent failure. The part costs approximately $500 from Nissan, is usually out of stock and back ordered, and costs another $400-$500 to be installed at a dealer. There should be a make-wide recall for all models for this part. Failure of this part strands the driver with no warning of impending failure. How can aelectronic part mounted inside the passengers compartment fail so often at less than three and a half years of service?.

50 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/24/2013

The steering wheel lock malfunctioned stranding my in a parking lot without any warning. The automatic lock mechanism locked the wheel and did not allow even allow me to start the car. When looking this up this is a very well known problem for several different Nissan models. In fact the exact same part as already been recalled on two different models. Apparently there has not been enough complaints on the Maxima for them to find this an issue forcing them to address it like there were with the others. I called Nissan and they agree that the exact same part was recalled due to safety concerns but not on the 2009 Maxima because the government has not made to recall it yet. So I just got stuck with a 1000 bill by the dealer to fix an unnecessary steering wheel lock column which is known to be faulty and has been recalled but not yet in this exact model. This is outrageous. This needs to be addressed soon.

51 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/22/2013

Went into the store, came out and my car would not start. The key symbol kept showing up, steering column was in the locked position & the brakes were locked as well. Had to get the car towed to local Nissan dealership where they informed me after some diagnostic tests that the problem was the steering lock mechanism. This is a part recalled on the 2009 370z & gtr Nissan models but not for the Maxima or altima. This is a huge safety concern & luckily I was somewhere close to home otherwise my son & I would have been stranded in freezing cold weather. Nissan took this part out of their 2010 models so it obviously is a faulty part. Kind of shady that they have not recalled it yet, especially with this being a huge safety concern.

52 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/08/2013

On the morning of 1/8/13 I drove my 2009 Nissan Maxima to my commuter parking lot, and realized that I didn't completely park in my space after turning the car off. I proceeded to start my car with the push stop/start but nothing happened. As soon as I realized my vehicle wouldn't start, I became very upset because I just purchased the vehicle last January and only had a powertrain warranty that was still active. I immediately contacted the service department of the Nissan dealership I purchased the vehicle from and complained, while crying lemon law. The service technician attempted to help me start the vehicle while over the phone and after realizing what the issue may be, he explained that there is a common issue with the 2009 Nissan Maxima's that he believes the computer module in the steering column had gone bad. I asked if Nissan had recalled that part since it was a common issue, his answer was no and informed me it's going to cost around $750 just to purchase the part, and with labor around $900-$1000 to repair. I said if this is a common issue with my model, then why didn't Nissan recall that part. The service technician had no explanation other than mentioning, it hasn't happened to enough people yet which I feel is completely absurd! this is a huge safety issue as my vehicle wouldn't start without any indication, or warning beforehand. Please help!.

53 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/06/2013

The steering column locked up and would not start the car. The electric lock failed to unlock sending error message to the bcm. The car completely locked up and would not start. There was no warning this would happen. It is my understanding that Nissan knows this component is a problem and even recalled it on other models, but not on the Maxima. Its an exteremely expensive fix and should be recalled if they know it is a problem. I got stranded in bitter cold temperatures with a 2 month old baby. This part needs to be recalled.

54 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/10/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Maxima. While parked, the contact attempted to adjust the steering wheel and was unable to because the steering column remained locked. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised that the motors in the steering column would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 46,000.

55 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

Today I found my Nissan Maxima 2009 making a repetitive grinding sound. Upon investigation I discovered that it was the motor for the adjustable steering wheel column. It is currently stuck in the highest position and it is extremely clumsy to drive and blocks vision to the instrument panel. In researching the repair I discovered that this is an incredibly common event and feel a recall is in order. Please investigate the frequent nature of this repair.

56 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/18/2012

We bought our Maxima brandnew in July of 2009. Loved everything about until this past June of 2012. Our first problem was some clitching electrical wiring. The outside mirrors wouldn't move up and down when we put the car in reverse. This would happen off and on while we took our trip out of town in June. After we came back my husband made a appointment to get it checked out, but because the outside mirrors were working again we just let it be and didn't follow up with the Nissan service department. In July of 2012 I was sitting in my parked car when I was ready to leave, I started my car only to hear this awful sort of grinding noise. I had a tow company come to tell that my battery was "dead". Which I was surprised, because my car is just 3 years old and I only had 24577 miles on it. The towing company charged my battery for me to make it across the street to autozone, where I got a new battery. I remember the last time when I brought in the car for service, the lady was telling me that I needed to drive my car more often due to the battery being "low". Which I thought was strange, I mean how inconvenient is that to have to drive you're car every day, because if you don't the battery just "dies" on you?! my last incident with my car happened this past Monday 09/17/2012 when I turn my car off, suddenly I hear again this awful grinding noise coming from the panel. Come to find out after I called the Nissan dealer that it was the steering column and that the motor need to be replaced and this is happening 2 months after my warranty ran out! I called Nissan dealer, they told me to bring it in. Seeing my car is 3 years old. . To me it should be a recall factory issue! and I shouldn't have to pay for it! they say this is a common problem? I don't think so! Nissan need to make this steering column a recall issue! because it is a dangerous defect.

57 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Steering component - telescope and tilt function: 1. The steering column telescoping function stopped working and can no longer be adjusted leaving the steering wheel in a locked position. Potential for injury if the steering wheel cannot be moved far enough away from the driver if the air bag deploys during a frontal crash. 2. Steering wheel tilt function stopped working and can no longer be adjusted leaving the steering wheel in a locked position. This also poses a potential for injury if the steering wheel cannot be adjusted up or down to properly accommodate the driver if the air bag deploys during a frontal crash.

58 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/03/2011

Tilt steering wheel locked in the extreme up position when drivers door was opened at approx 2 years/52,000 miles. Tilt steering wheel could not be lowered until disassembled by the dealer. Driver visibility was seriously obstructed, especially for shorter drivers. Potential air bag effectiveness was also seriously degraded. Nissan identified the problem is with the steering column adjustment motors (tilt or telescope) in service bulletin ntb09094. However, Nissan has not issued a recall and refused to reimburse this first-time Nissan owner for this safety defect. There is no certainty of whether replacement Nissan steering column adjustment motors do not have the same underlying design defect and will not fail shortly after installation. The telescope adjustment motor failed at approx 1 year/38,000 miles. Total replacement cost for parts and labor for both adjustment motors was approximately $400+. I request Nissan and NHTSA issue a recall for this serious safety defect.

60 Steering Column problem of the 1999 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/11/2007

I have a potentially deadly problem with my 133,000-mile, 1999 Nissan Maxima. It might be related to the crank sensor on newer Maxima, a steering column lock, a faulty ignition switch, faulty clutch depression switch, and the anti-theft kill switch, perhaps even a random ground. The problem was conceivably catastrophic. Upon entering my car using the remote, occasionally the car won't respond, and must be unlocked manually. In these instances, neither the dome lights nor the headlights shine. When the ignition key is rotated to the start position, as the clutch is being depressed, sometimes the gauge lights appear and then quickly fade and disappear; the car just doesn't crank. A faint, diminishing telltale buzzing sound can be heard. What's worse, this can happen spontaneously while driving, in which case the car's steering wheel locks and the brakes become inoperable. I have had this happen on three occasions, twice while driving in a mall parking lot (February and March ã‚07) and the other time (just last week) while turning into my neighbor's driveway, to take out her oak tree. The ignition crank sensor must slip into an inoperable mode during driving or while attempting to start the car, or the anti-theft switch somehow interferes with starting, operation or driving. Maybe the master ignition coil is failing (but that doesn't explain the headlight and dome light problems). The clutch switch may not engage when its pedal is being depressed. Sometimes, I can restart the car after an incident in which it was parked for a while. My battery is brand new, and there don't seem to be any shorts as far as I can tell. But nothing electrically works (not even the radio) when I have to unlock the car manually. I am very concerned about driving the car beyond my neighborhood. I might have to become a hermit, or worse, a college professor. Any ideas? the car is in excellent shape otherwise and has all service records.

61 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/26/2006

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While driving 50-55 mph, the steering wheel vibrated. The failure worsened when the contact depressed the brake pedal. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure, however, they aligned and balanced the tires. The failure still persists. The current mileage was 20,740 and failure mileage was 16,134.

62 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 04/12/2006

Problem #2 (out of 4/5): purchased 2004 Nissan Maxima brand new. My second major problem, I think the car was about a year old. When you turn the car off and on the steering wheel adjusts to your liking automatically. Well, it broke. So when I turned the car on, my steering wheel would not move to me, it was stuck in the upright position. When I tried to manually move to down and closer to me so I can drive the car, it would not budge. The steering wheel was stuck upright like a bus driver's steering wheel. I had not choice but to drive it all the way to the dealership like that. It was extremely dangerous driving like that, since it was very hard to turn the wheel, considering how high it was and close to the windshield it was. Huntington, NY dealership replaced the part to fix the steering wheel, again a electronic problem. I did not have my car for a few days. I had to make another complaint to the corporate office, which by the way, does nothing. The service department at this dealership treats customers like garbage, especially if you are woman. Also, still have the problem, every now and then when I reverse, my trunk pops open.

63 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/28/2004

Shimmy in the steering wheel when driving 40 mph and up dealer told my tires wereout of balance got tires balance still have problem, driving down to florida from new york was a nightmare.

64 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/05/2004

I purchased the vehicle with only 30 miles, we were the first one's to test drive the car. During the drive we noticed a vibration in the steering wheel between 60-80 miles per hour. The sales person advised us that the car simply needed to be balance since it has been sitting on the lot for for 4months and the tires had a dull spot. We scheduled the service 4 days after the purchase. After the dealer replaced the tires with brand new continental tires, aligned, road force balance the vehicle. The problem still persist. Nissan consumer affair said that the car was tuned to spec and that we would have to live with it. Can someone explain to me why I am paying for a defective car and cannot do anything about it. Maxva7@comcast. Net.

65 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/14/2004

When driving at 50 to 60 mph, the steering wheel shimmies. I've taken the car back to the dealer four times, twice they have balanced the tires, they recalibrated their balancing machine and once they made an adjustment to the steering column. Problem still exist with only 7800 miles.
