36 Steering problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 03/02/2017

Steering/straight line tracking on this Nissan Maxima sv (purchased 06/28/2016) is horribly unpredictable from it's date of purchase. Driver required to be hypersensitive to correcting tracking/line direction of aforementioned vehicle. Natural tendency of front wheels are to careen to left and right abruptly and dangerously with the result being to move into oncoming traffic lane or drift quickly outside of painted lane lines. Constant and inordinate attention is needed to drive this vehicle at speeds of 50 mph or higher. In motion, highway, straight paths.

37 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

38 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/15/2017

I own a 2009 Nissan Maxima, never had nay problems with the car except for routine work done. I clocked out of work and went to start my car and the car did not start. The wheel and brakes were locked on me and I could not take the vehicle out of park to shift it. My key light appeared on my dash and I looked it up in my manual and saw it was the steering lock. . Needless to say I had to pay to tow my car from work to the dealership and it cost me 1113. 00 to fix the steering lock unit. . To my knowledge I never was notified or received a letter telling me about the extended warranty abput the steering lock. I feel like the warranty should be forever because what if this steering lock unit I replaced goes out on me again leaving me stranded somewhere else and then I have to pay another 1113. 00 to fix. . . Way to go Nissan!!!!!!!!.

39 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/05/2017

On Sunday, 5 February 2017, I left my house to visit my brother at 10am and when I came back outside (20mins later) to my car, it would not start. An orange light that read "key" popped up on the dashboard. Tried to start the car and the key light came on, brakes were hard to press, and the ignition would not start only lock would show up on the push to start button. After two hours, I had to get the car towed to the dealership. While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, I did some searching online and found out that this was not an uncommon problem with the Nissan Maxima and not covered by any extended warranties; though I read that this problem occurred often enough with the 2009 Maxima that Nissan issued an extended warranty to cover this repair. The piece in question that was the problem. . . Quoted by Nissan is the "steering lock. " this piece has been recalled by Nissan in the earlier models, but apparently not for my vehicle (which is the year after the one that is recalled) apparently they didn't fix this issue. Monday, 6 February 2017, I received a call from the dealership to confirm my car issue (lock steering) and the cost was going to be $1104 to repair, with my military discount the cost was $985. 46. Still this is money I should not have had to pay considering that this is a manufacturer malfunction and has nothing to do with wear and tear of vehicle. Which, btw, the vehicle is in great shape and has had regular maintenance checks and all work completed by a Nissan technician which makes this even more frustrating. This complaint is to not only bring attention to the ongoing issue with the 2010 Nissan Maxima, but to also get reimbursed for my out of pocket repair. I have been a loyal Nissan customer since 2000 (this is my third Maxima; favorite type of car), but I can honestly say Nissan, you're losing yet another customerthis is ridiculous.

40 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/04/2017

2009 Maxima with 87,000 miles was operational throughout the day; we parked at a business establishment for lunch February 4, 2017 (winter; cloudy no rain or snow) outdoor temperature 45 f. When returning to vehicle, car would not start: steering wheel locked and intellikey system would not function; blinking dash light indicated car was in lock-down mode. Had to call tow truck - after 75 minutes wait car was towed to Nissan dealer for repair (still waiting). This is the second time the steering lock mechanism & ignition switch assembly locked up in this very same car (that time was October 2012 with 46,000 miles on the car). This is a serious problem since this appears to happen at random; luckily no one was hurt and it didn't happen in a dangerous situation or vicious weather. Previous repair was still under warranty, but I suspect this repair will be quite costly. The car should not lock up like this for no reason. The steering lock mechanisms appears to be either a faulty design or have problems functioning. Please investigate and have this part recalled or repaired.

41 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/30/2017

My wife was stranded at a business and our car wouldn't start. After calling our local dealer, it's a known problem with the steering lock. We purchased this 2010 Maxima new in sept. 2009. This is a known issue that should be taken care of by Nissan. We have 67000 miles and was told that it's not a warranty issue.

42 Steering problem of the 2011 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/22/2017

Vehicle is parked and engine wont start. Had a 2009 Maxima that also had the same issues. Checked battery and it is fine but car wont start. I have jumpstarted it and that has turned the car back on but after a few months I have the same issue. This last time my car did not start , not even with a jump start.

43 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/17/2017

Vehicle is an implacable condition. Just turned only 70,000 miles. Car was parked at my place of business. When I came out to go home the key light was on. Upon diag. Found the steering lock solenoid has malfunctioned causing the vehicle to be stranded. Having the car towed 20 miles at my expense I find put this is a known issue with this particular year make and model. Very costly repair.

44 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/05/2017

Went to use car before work and it wouldn't start. To the proper measures to start it by giving it a jump and no avail. I finally looked in the manual for the warning Nissan intelligent key issue and no solution was found. I began research and found this is a national problem and 09 Nissans were recalled for this issue but not newer models. This tends to happen after 65k miles and my car is at 91k. The repairs are expensive and caused to a defect not the wear and tear of the driver. Nissan should be held accountable.

45 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 01/03/2017

The steering wheel lock locks and doesn't allow you to start your vehicle. This is very dangerous as I live in minnesota and had the sterrring lock trigger which left me stranded in fridged temperatures. This is a safety issue as it happen with out notice and could cause harm or death by not being able to start your vehicle. This happens when the car is placed in park and the ignition is disengaged.

47 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/30/2016

The car doesn't start, the steering wheel is not locked and it shows a red light with a key in the dashboard, I was in a parking lot doing grocery and when I went to the car to go back home it didn't start, showing that red light with a key on it.

48 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

I'm the second owner & it's run fine since November 2011. Yesterday it wouldn't start due to the faulty/broken ignition switch. Towed it to dealer & it's going to be $910 to replace the faulty electronic ignition. VIN contains a's (not b's), indicating it was from first half of 2010. It probably has the same defect as the 2009 Maximas that were recalled. Dealer 'correctly' states the 2010 doesn't have a recall, but it should. Love Nissan cars, but after this, I'll never take it back to the dealer for service. Nissan needs to issue a recall on these cars to reciprocate customer loyalty.

49 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/13/2016

Car will not start with the electric push button. It seems to be the electric steering lock mechanism actuator. Nissan wants to charge $1000 for the part and $400 labor. It took us 15 mins to take the part out ourselves and unplugged it and plugged it back in. It did work a few times but now it wont work again. Looks like I will have to buy the part which is on amazon for around $400. 00. This is a real problem with this part and Nissan should honor an extended warranty on it! I had to have it towed twice before figuring this out! not sure why they have charge so much for such a simple fix. The dealer ship is a rip off. . .

50 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 12/05/2016

My car started with no problem early morning to go to work, but when I got off it would not start. I saw a key light on, so I assumed that it was my intelligent key battery. So I got a new battery. I tried to start it again and it still would not start. I had it towed to the dealership and the next morning they did a diagnostic. They told me my steering lock unit is bad and it would be 1,020. 00 to replace it. I asked how does something like this happens with no warning and they could not answer. I was told it just happens. This unit really needs to be recalled.

51 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/26/2016

Got in car leaving from gym the steering wheel was locked could not move it. Called dealer who told me to hold key fob over car ignition did not resolve situation. I had to have it towed . I got on line to research about this locking mechanism and have discovered that this is a known issue with millions of consumer complaints to this very issue this is a known issue with millions of complaints being filed against Nissan for this situation. Apparently there should have been a recall on this internal steering wheel lock mechanism however Nissan has passed the cost of the faulty component onto the unexpecting consumer. This cost me $1000. 00 . Shame on you Nissan. Thank god I was not in motion.

52 Steering problem of the 2016 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/17/2016

Front bumper clip broken car stalls when driving up an incline at low speeds. Car pulls to the left when driving. Alignment was checked, but was fine according to a Nissan dealer technician. The steering wheel seemed to momentarily lock when making a swift and sharp left turn.

53 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/17/2016

Vehicle started fine, made a stop at the store before heading to work in the am, came out of store only to find the vehicle would not start. Called service department used for regular maintenance and was told this is a common problem with vehicle. Escl or elect. Steering control lock module bad and will have to be replaced. Problem known/common by Nissan neither extended warranty nor Nissan want to pay to repair. With this being known and common there should be a recall on this part.

54 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

I went outside to start my vehicle and it wouldn't start. . The steering wheel is locked and I can't get it unlocked. . The steering wheel symbol with 2 up and down arrows on both sides of it lights up on the dash and a red flash in car symbol with a key in the center of it is on along with the lock word on the push button. . It won't go past the lock button when I try to start it.

55 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/09/2016

I been having vibrations and clunk noises since I brought the car in 2013 the car shakes and vibrates at 55 mph since then I replace shocks struts ball joints control arms and tires but the problem is getting worse.

56 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/09/2016

Car started fine all morning, I went inside tof pay a bill not even 10 minutes later. I went to my car to crank up and it was completely dead, brakes were hard, and the key display flashing. I called a mechanic to try everything no budge, soon I called a tow truck to have it towed to the Nissan dealership. Nissan called the next day stating that the steering wheel mechanism had failed and warranty was covering it. I ended up dishing out over 1300. 00 to get it fix.

57 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 11/05/2016

Car will not start due to steering wheel lock malfunction. Called my local Nissan dealership who advised me of the problem which they are aware of. However, the extended warranty to cover this issue expired March of 2015. So that leaves the customer with an out of pocket expense of 900-1100 dollars. Nissan has not issued any recall. I'm stuck paying for a car that doesn't start and forced to shell out over a $1000 for a problem that is the manfacturer's fault. This is highway robbery. A complete ripoff to Nissan's customers. This company is a joke. I will never ever purchase another Nissan again. And I strongly recommend that one else does.

58 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/28/2016

I drove my car . 5 of a mile to the store got down and came back to start my car. My gas pedal was hard and my push start button read lock. I saw a red blinking key sign. I inserted my key fob in the slot hoping that fixed it and nothing. I wiggled the wheel and pressed the start button and nothing. I tried everything in the book for 3 hours in the parking lot of heb until I got it towed to my apartment until I figured out what to do. I got online and saw so many complaints about the same issue. I called Nissan dealership Saturday and told them what happened. They said they needed to inspect the vehicle so I scheduled. I asked if they would cover the repairs since this has been going on to many vehicles, maybe a recall? they said no, unless I have warranty- I don't. Turns out I need a new steering control. $1,500 later my car is being worked on now. I have a few questions for the service advisors. Not a happy Nissan owner right now.

59 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

Car wouldn't start, steering wheel lock would not disengage. Also windows went down with auto-down feature on key but no way to put them back up.

60 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

The steering wheel lock is a defective product that Nissan has known about in their 2009 models. The repair is going to cost me, and anyone that comes this issues, and that out of warranty $1100. 00. This repair isn't guaranteed either. Called consumer affairs only to be told no. This part you need is only available at a Nissan dealership, and the part itself cost $900. For Nissan to not stand by their cars is a shame.

61 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/18/2016

Takata recall - I was at the barbershop getting my haircut and afterwards when leaving I was attending to crank up and drive off but my car wouldn't crank and it was in lock mode (steering wheel lock module )and took me almost a hour or two before it cranked up, so I was very frustrated because this happened and there was a lock indicator light on in the dash and today on September 18th, 2016 it happened again and now it won't say anything so I cant even drive my 09 Maxima someone please get a recall for this.

62 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/17/2016

Me and my family were out of town of a weekend getaway, not knowing this steering wheel lock situation was about to leave us stranded out of town and ruin a planned out weekend. Basically we arrived to our destination as perfect as can be, park the car and me and my family left my 2009 Nissan Maxima parked for a few hours as we enjoyed ourselves. When returning to the car is when the problem began and sense of worry hit my fiance and kids faces. The steering wheel locked and we had no control of the car no more. Stranded and trying to figure out what was exactly going on with the help of google and you tube. A lovely memorable weekend away became a nightmare in a matter of hours. Very disappointed in Nissan after reading all the similar complaints and malfunctions individuals have been dealing with and no support or recall from Nissan. Me and my family were stranded in a city were we had no family relations for support in an emergency situation. My Nissan steering lock situation really opened my eyes to the dangers of this. Definitely reconsidering what to do with my car and my next purchase. Thank god with the support of a you tube video I was able to follow instructions to get the car started after a few hours of trying for who knows how many more times. I drove straight home and now the car sits there non running, steeling wheel locked. My family was my priority and getting them home was a necessity. This steering wheel lock really put us as parents in a dangerous and scared situation for ourselves and children.

63 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

The steeringwheel will not unlock and car wont start. 2009 Nissan Maxima.

64 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/31/2016

Steering lock control unit left me stranded. Parked my car the night prior as usual and was unable to restart my car the next morning leaving me without a way to get my kids to school. After reading up on this issue I have found complaint after complaint. Not a happy customer.

65 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/27/2016

Escl disabled my push button start. Now I am unable to start let alone drive my vehicle. To add insult to injury I will have to have it towed to the dealer (additional cost to myself) and the dealer is going to charge close to $1200. 00 to fix the problem. Apparently this was a recall but expired in 2015. Why won't Nissan be responsible and pay for this instead of the consumer? this was obviously a defect in the production of the vehicle seeing how it is such a widespread problem against Nissan vehicle owners.

66 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/18/2016

Turned car off to go into post office. Returned and it wouldn't do anything. Went had new battery put in key pad. Still nothing. Called Nissan for suggestions. None given. Had to have towed to Nissan. After they checked was told steering lock unit had internal failure. Never heard of this problem before after owning several cars. A very expensive repair and one that shouldn't be occurring on a 2009 model car. I 'm very disappointed with this car since I had heard so many good things about it. I gave up on Cadillac's to get a Nissan. Sure believe I made a big mistake. There are other little quirks that have bothered me. I'm on my third car battery. Bought the last one in April 2014. The key pad locks have to be changed every year. The original paint job is very shallow. The most important is the replacement of this steering lock unit.

67 Steering problem of the 2005 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/13/2016

While driving my 2005 Nissan Maxima the gears slip and jump into gear with a violent jerk that is affecting my driving and may cause me to lose control of the car and possible injury myself or others. There is a transmission issue with the valve body that is causing this violent shifting and it seems that I am not the only one that has this issue. It is disgrace that the NHTSA had done nothing to address this wide spread issue, must people die first so it does get addressed. I will also contact my state representative to report the issue. I opened up a case with Nissan consumer affairs with no luck or admittance of their failed component. Nissan dealership diagnosed transmission with a p0726 code and had an open technical bulletin ntb11¿035 which is acknowledgement of Nissans failed design of the transmission valve body. Nissan has quoted me over $2500 to repair their failed design component.

68 Steering problem of the 2010 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/07/2016

I bought this vehicle new and it now has 49,000 miles on it. In the last two weeks, the steering wheel has locked 3x and I have been unable to start my car. I have been able to get it started by continuously stepping on the brake and shimmy the wheel. I'm a 65 year old female and it takes minimally 5 minutes to complete this task in a vehicle overheated by the soaring summer temps. This us unhealthy and a safety issue and it should be addressed.

69 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/02/2016

When we purchased the car last year, the steering wheel would go up. It made a grinding noise. The dealership fixed it under warranty for no charge. It started doing the same thing in August of 2016. Car is not under warranty now. There are so many folks having the same issue with the same year and model car. Nissan should recall these cars and fix the problem for free. The steering wheel will not move up. It is stuck in the down position and makes a grinding noise.

70 Steering problem of the 2009 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 07/29/2016

My 18 old sons car just hit 87000 miles and the steering lock mechanism has failed. Not only is this a $900 repair but it is a reoccurring problem with Nissan vehicles. My son was stranded in a parking lot at 12am. This has occurred 3 times while his car is off. He is unable to start it. Had to have it towed 3 times with the dealer saying it was a battery problem. Had the battery replaced. Nissan admits there is a steering lock problem and that the recall period ended in Jan 3016. My son is 18 and just bought the car from a reputable major car dealership in town. Anytime a driver is at risk in a parking garage or lot or freeway with a car that had this notable problem it is a safety concern.
