While driving 30 mph steering failed. As a result, the vehicle went across the median and collided head on into another vehicle. Driver sustained a broken foot. Vehicle was totaled.
When turning at low speeds the steering intermittently becomes stiff and requires increased force to maneuver the rest of the turn. Vehicle was taken to dealership on 2 occasions, both of which the service department was unable to duplicate the problem and therefore unable to fix.

I purchased a Nissan Murano 2004 SUV. When steering, mostly at low speeds my car looses its power steering. On and off the steering wheel gets heavier. I am very concerned with that fact most of all that my wife drives the car with out two little children. I believe Nissan should be forced to address the issue since they did it with the upcoming new 2005 Murano. Don't you think that the safety of the 2004 model owners should be the same as that of the 2005 model owners? I thank you for your attention and I believe that my complaint should be addressed in a timely matter. Thank you. Nikola goranov.
Loss of power steering when in sharp or sudden turn especially near the end of a turn. Condition is intermittant, but is a major safety risk. Ongoing problem since ownership of car.
Complaint received via e-mail. On the morning of September 16, 2004 I was driving about 35 or 40 mph on highway 680 south at highway 101 interchange near san jose, California when I had to rapidly turn the steering wheel to my left to avoid rear ending a car in front of me. During the return motion of the wheels I unexpectedly lost power steering boost. Fortunately I was able to act very quickly, and forced the steering wheel back to where it belonged. In doing so I avoided a certain collision with the car on my left lane. As the result of this incident, I hurt my left wrist. Later, at a parking lot, I tried to recreate the loss of power steering I had encountered by rapidly turning the steering wheel half a turn to the left and then to the right and every time the power steering boost failed. The system appeared to be normal until the driver had to execute a maneuver to avoid a road hazard. That was when the system failed, and by then it may be too late to do anything about it. From information obtained from various forums on the internet (e. G. Nissan Murano and consumer reports magazine, this problem appeared to be very real and very common with all 2003 and 2004 Nissan Murano vehicles, and therefore it represented a clear safety hazard that needed to be addressed and fixed before any lives were lost.
I was driving home on a 4 lane road with a center turn lane in the right hand lane when the car in front of me suddenly stopped. I hit the brakes and swerved into the left hand lane to avoid an accident. I was traveling aprox. 25 to 30 mph. The power steering went out, the steering wheel locked and the car was crossing through the turn lane heading for oncoming traffic. I jerked the wheel hard to the right and the power steering came back at the last possible moment narrowly avoiding a head on collision.
Complete loss of power steering at low rpm's. While slowing down and going around a turn, the power steering will completely fail. This has almost caused 6 accidents in the last 4 months. Only happens at low rpm's.
Complete loss of power steering at low rpm's. Power steering is minimal to non-existant when you need it most, like in parking lot. 15,000 miles.
