Turning into parking space at mcdonalds. Foot on brakes, shift lever in drive, engine speed at idle. A bright red flashing "emergency" light appeared inside the speedometer ring at the nine o'clock position. Simultaneously accompanied by a complete brake failure. This light is not mentioned in the operators manual. Vehicle was taken to the port charlotte FL dealer and checked out perfectly. Their maintenance supervisor knew nothing about this light--it is not in their maintence manual. I have three eye witnesses inside the car at the time. A large SUV with no brakes! what could possibly go wrong?.

9 Brakes Failed problem of the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 09/19/2014

We were stopped in traffic on the downhill portion of a city street when we were hit from behind by a Nissan pickup travelling at approximately 30 miles per hour. We were approximately 10-12 feet behind the car in front of us as we'd stopped early due to wishing to leave room to move up in case of imminent impact (we could see the vehicle come fast and not slowing enough). My foot was on the brake and we were not moving at the time. The impact disengaged our brakes (my foot was still on the pedal and it was fully depressed). We hit the car car in front of us at an angle and continued to roll forward for approximately 100 yards with no way of stopping. After pumping the pedal a few times the brakes once again engaged and I was able to stop the vehicle. I had had the brakes checked the previous week by the Nissan dealership I had purchased the vehicle from and they advised me there were no issues with the brakes. I feel that the brakes failed on this vehicle based on my past experiences in similar rear end collisions and have grave concerns about a defect.

22 Brakes Failed problem of the 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 10/17/2009

2001 Nissan Pathfinder has experienced two events where the brakes have malfunctioned. The first event involved the emergency brake activating when the vehicle was traveling about 45 mph without the driver pulling up on the emergency handle. Immediately upon the brake locking up, the driver pulled up and down on the handle and the emergency brake thankfully released itself. The second event occurred two weeks later when all four brakes failed to activate when the driver pushed down on the brake pedal - it went to the floor without engaging any of the brakes. After pushing the brake pedal over and over, the car finally stopped just short of the car in front of him at the intersection. We took the vehicle to the Nissan dealer and they allegedly analyzed all of the braking systems and could not find any problems. This vehicle has an abs system that might be malfunctioning, but we do not know what the problem(s) could be. Since the vehicle is essential to our daily use, we are driving it with some concern and constant worry.

While braking from a speed of 5 mph in a parking lot, the car continued forward 8-10 feet from where it should have stopped. Same symptom happened once before, in my driveway, about one year ago. Nissan dealer can find no cause other than a weak battery, and I don't believe that's the cause of my brake failure.

25 Brakes Failed problem of the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 01/25/2004

We bought a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder in Apr 2003. The Pathfinder's brake system has been soft. When I pressed the brake pedal, it didn't engage until it went about half way to the floor. We heard the noise & had brake problem in the early Dec 2003. We took it to a Nissan dealer to check it out. They said they didn't hear any noise & no problem found, but said the noise must have been from the tires, therefore, we needed 2 new tires & an alignment. When we're picking up the vehicle(after spending more than $300 for 2 new tires & the alignment), one of the tech's came into the office & told the service advisor that he'd just heard the noise that we talked about. The advisor told us to take it home & watch it for a few days. That same afternoon, we heard it again, & took it back to dealer the next day. I asked them to check everything again. When we pick up the vehicle, advisor still said no problem & assured us that it's safe to drive. Two weeks later, we took it in for an oil change, & told them we still had problem, advisor told us needed to set appointment. But it's a little bit too late. A week later, I got an accident because of the brake failure. On Jan 25, 2004, I was going slowly (the traffic was moving slowly), & had plenty of distance between my car & the truck in front of me. When the truck ahead of me braked, I also attempted to brake but the vehicle failed to brake, I hit the truck & sustained damage to the front end of the Pathfinder ( luckily, the airbag didn't explode), & the truck was ok. We contacted Nissan motor company immediately after the accident, they told us would inspect the vehicle while it's at the body shop but didn't do it until 2 months later after we took it home. As of today, we've not heard anything from them yet. We want them to repurchase the Pathfinder because I have no faith in it & I'm afraid to drive it.

26 Brakes Failed problem of the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 10/24/2003

After 12 months of driving brake pedal began to respond differently after depressing it on some occasions, not on others. Steering wheel began to shake noticeably when brakes were depressed at highway speeds. At low speed, brakes failed entirely, causing rear end collision, then, they began to work again. No consistency or pattern determined whether brakes would fail to respond or when they would respond unusually. Diagnostic tests initially showed no overt problem with abs when the brakes were responding normally.
