We were towing our 18ft boat up a hill near a lake in san diego when we experienced complete engine/power/brake failure on a hill with no guard rail. The weight of the boat pulled us backward out of control until we jacknifed to the left into the side of the hill which held us in place until the park rangers towed us out. If we had jacknifed to the right, our entire family would have been pulled over the edge of the hill and down a cliff. All brake systems failed (foot and emergency) and the engine could not pull the weight of the trailer/boat. The trailer/boat were well within the manufactuer's guidlines for towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

While driving at any rate of speed vehicle will completely shut down, cause unknown. Dealer cannot identify the cause of the problem. Please give any further details.
Vehicle fails to start without excessive engine crank time (apparently flooded engine problem). Usually occurs at higher altitudes in winter. Problem is getting progressively worse. Dealers have worked on vehicle a number of times over ~2 years with no improvement. New instructions provided in spring of 1998 on how to modify starting procedure do not work! I am sending a detailed letter of complaint to Nissan, north America. Safety issues include (1) excessive wear on starter, starter gearing and engine, (2) fire potential from flooding and (3) possibility of stranding in back country should engine not start or starter/gear fail.
The vehicle has been into the dealer twice for repairs and could not be repaired. They said that Nissan is aware of this problem in both the 1996 and 1997 model years. Nissan customer service said that they were not planning an "fix" for this problem now or in the near future. They said we would just have to live with the noise and inconvenience. Noise clunk/surge when stopping.
