The timing chain and tensioner system is making noise. Nissan is aware of this reoccurring issue and has sent out an TSB to dealers that does not fix the issue. There really should be a recall since they have known about the problem since 2004 or earlier. I am lucky this did not fail on my recent long trips on the highway. It could have been deadly.

The vehicle was making a high-pitched noise during acceleration @ apprx. 2000 rpms. Additionally, I had recently noticed sluggish and uneven acceleration. Upon taking it to the dealer, I was informed that there was a problem with the inner timing chain and tension guide/shoe, a worn drive belt and drive belt tensioner, and a stuck fan belt clutch. In addition, I was told that there is also potential damage to the inner timing cover. Nissan is aware that there is a defect with the timing chain and tension guide/shoe. The defect could cause the timing chains to slip - which would lead to immediate engine damage - and create a potentially dangerous situation in traffic. In addition, the faulty part could cause other engine issues (like the ones reported).

Vehicle is currently showing symptoms of the bad timing chain/tensioner issue reported by many other consumers. The repair will be expensive for a component that should last the life of the vehicle. Should the component fail and result in catostrophic damage while driving, this will result in immediate loss of power steering and potentially cause vehicle instability and loss of control.

The vehicle started to make a whining noise under throttle but was not initially identified as a significant problem. It was assumed to be a belt or belt pulley. Approximately 2 weeks after the noise started, the timing chain developed a problem and loud rattling noises could be heard from the engine. The sound was a sloppy rattle consistent with a timing chain tensioner or guide broken.
Oil pressure dropped while driving due to timing chain tensioners and guide failure. If complete failure had accured, motor could have blown or locked up causing accident.
At 35,500 miles the secondary timing chain tensioner shoes failed. The dealer told me that this is a very common problem with the 4. 0l motor. This repair is $1000 and not covered by any remaining warranty. I believe that since thousands of people have had to pay thousands of dollars to repair this defective part it should be a recall. This would be dangerous if this failed while the vehicle was moving at highway speeds, luckily I was driving slow enough to avoid an accident.

A high pitched whining noise from under the hood on a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. Took the car to the dealership in modesto California and my wife was told that it would cost 1,300 to replace the timing chain tensioners or more if the timing chain(s) were bad. The car has 71, 000 miles and I was told that it would not be covered under the warranty. My wife was told the car was safe to drive and was told that there was no risk of further damage to vehicle. I have read several other instances where timing chain components fail just beyond the manufacture’s stated warranty. The issue has had a TSB since July of 2007 #07042a. I have had all of my service done at this dealer and I had never been advised about the TSB or the noise. The timing chain nor the tensioners should not fail at 70,000 miles. I also have uneven tire wear with no alignment issues. Vehicle=lemon.
I own a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder se, 4. 0 liter v6 with 53,000 miles. I just had to replace the timing chains, timing chain guides, and timing chain tensioners. I was driving on the freeway when the problem occurred and had to have the car towed home. The dealer wanted in excess of $2,500. 00, I had the work completed for $1,800. 00 with another source. I have come to find out that this is not an uncommon problem with this vehicle and Nissan refused to do anything about it. I contacted Nissan north America and was told that while my car has under the 60,000 mile warranty limit, I was over the 5 year limit by 7 months.
Engine noise coming from the secondary timing chain and tensioners. The first time I took it to Nissan dealer they told me they couldn't find anything wrong. When I brought it back months later they told me I had low oil in engine and combined with I was past the 60,000 warranty now (67,861) that I would not be covered under warranty. They knew this was a problem and claimed that I had no record of it being a problem since they couldn't "find" anything when I brought it in the first time. Two dealerships told me that it was just a noise when in fact Nissan has known about the timing chain issue this whole time. I was told to pay for the repair myself which was above $1,500. 00.
