3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 06/15/2014

3 months ago my electrical started going haywire. Turn signals, dash, lights, windows. Most occur while turning car on. It's hit and miss whether it starts. Battery drains sometimes no rhyme or reason. It starts without incident one day and then needs recharged the next. I've had multiple people tell me an aray of different possibilities, alternator, ignition switch, battery, worn down key, leaving something on etc. I believe the problem occurs because the key can come in and out while in any position. Because of this I believe the battery is being drained because people are unaware that they are removing the key while it is still in the acc or on position. This doesnt explain why various electrical components aren't working at full capacity all the time. I did notice that the hit and miss quality wasn't as severe once I removed all extras from the key after receiving the recall notice a week ago. I started to pay more attention to what was going on to see if perhaps the issue was related last Sunday the battery seemed dead again and the car wouldn't start. I tried several times until I got things to light up but then the key slipped out while trying to start it. I slipped the key back in and now it won't turn to either the off or start positions. It remains in acc or on positions only. Even if I charged the battery I wouldn't be able to start it or turn the electrical accessories off to keep the battery from draining again. From what I can tell, the recall doesn't actually replace the ignition switch it only modifies the keys to keep the ignition switch from becoming faulty. What am I supposed to do since the problem has already occurred? even though the part that the recall was issued for caused my problem, will I have to pay out of pocket to fix the actual problem? who do I contact if they will fix the problem?.

6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

My blinkers on the driver's side (front and back) began to malfunction and would only work intermittently in 2010. This went on for about a year and then the passenger side blinkers (front and back) began to malfunction in the same manner about 6 months later. This went on with both sides working only intermittently for 2 years. Then, suddenly while driving at night and trying to make a left turn in mid 2012, the passenger side blinker started making very loud electrical glitch sounds and then completely blew and my car died with it. I had to replace the alternator shortly after and the passenger side blinkers worked perfectly, but I had to drive with out my driver's side blinkers until mid 2013, when I could not pass dmv required inspection. I paid to have the driver's side blinker relay system replaced and it worked for about a month but then both driver and passenger side blinkers started working intermittently again. Within 1 month, the driver's side blinker relay system completely failed again (passenger works, except I have to wiggle and mess with the emergency hazards lights to get it to even turn on at all). Now I have one pair of blinkers not working at all, and one that is intermittent, 3/4 of the time it works but only if I distractedly wiggle my hazard light button while trying to turn or change lanes. Mechanics are baffled and don't know what too tell me! this is a dangerous condition for anyone to be driving with and I fear it will cause an accident someday soon. I have also had the same issue with my headlights intermittently dimming that has been reported by many gm consumers since I started driving the vehicle in 2007. I do not want to have to pay another mechanic to replace my driver's side turn signal relay system, just for it fail again due to these dangerous electrical system problems in my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Gm needs to act quickly!.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 10/01/2003

So much for investing in american-made vehicles. I, like over a dozen others who took the time to file a complaint, am experiencing the flicker and dim of all lighting during the evening hours - especially when the weather's colder. It is unnerving to me, and I'm sure to those drivers around me, to drive with questionable exterior lighting. And, as others have said, gm does not view this as a "safety issue". What say they have their spouse, or their child, drive a vehicle with this same "not a safety issue" and see if their view doesn't change? I work, and with daylight savings time, this means I am travelling home in the dark -- with my one-year-old and nine-year-old in the car with me. None of this matters to the folks at gm. Because they can point to the age and mileage of the vehicle to get them off the hook, they are. The fact that they issued a "bulletin" regarding this issue in feb01 doesn't seem to matter. $650+labor for a new alternator may or may not resolve the issue, but that, apparently is my money to invest in a possible, but not guaranteed, solution. Judging from the other filings here, it doesn't sound too promising, so I'm left with the debate of dump this money to *maybe* fix the problem or let it be until something bad happens? my car is too old and has too many miles for this to be considered something for which they, gm, will assume responsibility. I will never buy gm again.

20 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 02/18/2002

Problem seems to be getting worse. Dealer is unsympathitac towards this problem. Dealers and repair shops are inconsistent in their diagnoses of the problem. Gm refuses to acknowledge that a severe problem exists until someone becomes injured or gets killed becaue of it. The NHTSA has opened an investigation into this persistent problem and gm still is unphased an apethetic towards the plight of the consumer. No safety defect listed.

21 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 11/07/2001

Headlights flickered off and on, would not stay on at night. Had at least one flash (off then on within one second period) every time I drove in the dark. One time it flashed continuously. 30 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 11/01/2000

The headlights filcker at various times and this alternator has been replaced 3 times. The dealer has done all that they can, but the alternator failure is a design flaw with the 3. 5l engine. I have been told that this is not a major problem, but the 'flickering' has become more regular and seems to happens for a longer duratation. I look forward to a solution from gm on this.

31 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 10/20/2000

Bought car oct 2000 as a used auto. Immediately had problems with it. Has been in shop for each of these 4-5 times at least. It has a vibration in the steering system. Midshaft was replaced, but it returned. Olds did say they would attempt to fix this. Ordered a new intermediate shaft, but they could not find what was actually causing this problem. Been also in shop for lights flickering, heater surging, temp gauge running hot. Alternator was replaced after a 3 week stay at the dealer. This problem returned 3 days before midshaft was to be replaced the 2nd time. Called dealership that was going to replace shaft, and decided to hold off until we could settle this with olds. Olds is not trying to rectify easily. I am reporting this to better business bureau at this time.

All interior and exterior lights will spontaneously dim. Dealer has replaced alternator, and inspected electrical system, and could not find cause. Problem still occurs. Dealer is ordering another alternator.

33 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 06/06/2000

The major complaint I have with this automobile is the electrical system. The lights constantly flare and flicker as if they are shorting out. Gm has claimed that there was a problem with the alternator and after a substantial wait for a remedy that being a redisigned alternator gm still has not fixed the problem. The lights have flickered on and off since the auto was purchased. The mechanics at my dealership have tried but failed to find the problem . The alternator has been replaced twice one by the dealer in desperation and again when the newly redesigned from gm arrived after nearly 6 months from the original promise of a fix came in . My greatest fear is that the computer in this car will fail with all the power surges being put through the electrical sytem. In my opinion this has manifested itself already with the need to reprogram the computer in this car. As this auto was purchased new I would have thought I was purchasing a vehicle free from defects. I hope that this vehicle doesn't turn into a money pit. Thank goodness these problems began while under warranty hopefully gm will continue to honor the warranty after it expires.

34 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 11/26/1999

My 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue has an ongoing problem with all interior lights that operate when the headlights are on. The headlights as well as the dash lights, dome light, trunk light, etc all flicker/dim dramatically and intermittently and at the same time whenever they feel like it. It has been attempted to be repaired 5 times by the dealer, and is now at the Oldsmobile tech assistance level. Parts such as the dealer module and the alternator have been replaced to no avail. Olds is saying that there is an existing tac case #3668071 for other 1999 Intrigues experiencing the similar problem across the us, but no fix is available. All the while, I am being told to drive the car and be patient. I am concerned about driving at night as these lights may someday just not flicker, but totally go out! olds has not offered any info other than that they are working on this at the engineering level, and that they suspect it is a computer problem that needs a software fix. I am just upset that I spent thousands of dollars on something that I feel is potentially very unsafe! and getting worse. Any assistance rendered would be greatly appreciated!.

35 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Failure Date: 04/13/1999

Alternator failed $300. 00 replacement/abs anti-lock lights come on too often, have to turn car off to reboot system.
