My son was driving the car and it started making a noise and I pulled over and checked and didn't see anything and continued driving. I noticed smoke coming from under the hood and pulled into a gas station and noticed the car was on fire and ran into the gas station and asked for a fire extinguisher. The attendant had one and went and put the fire. I have contacted gm and was told this was due to a recall which caused oil to leak onto the manifold and thus far they have been unable or unwilling to help with this issue.

Owner noticed car was going threw oil. At first no leak was found and owner thought the vehicle was burning it internally. Brought car in for a diagnosis for another issue that was occurring at the time and noticed that there was smoke coming from the rear manifold. Took a look and it turns out valve covers are leaking. Car was switched from conventional oil to synthetics which had made it more noticeable. Earlier Oldsmobile Intrigue models have a recall for the same issue but not with the 2002 models. The recall number is 09v116000. Vehicle has had no loss in performance.

I am writing this for my husband. My daughter's car (which is in my name) was parked in her driveway for 3 weeks while she was out of the country. This morning approx. 10:30am. , tue. 17th. 2012, her dad wanted to get it cleaned up for her before she came home tonight. Her dad put the key in but the car would not start. He figured that the battery was dead (the battery was only a few months old). He pulled his vehicle next to the 1998 olds Intrigue and hooked up the battery cables. When he went to start the Intrigue, there was a very loud boom (he described it like an m-80 going off) and he then saw flames!!! underneath the hood. He ran and got a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. As the smoke cleared, he saw pieces of broken plastic/metal on the driveway in front of the car and the intake manifold had blown 10 to 15 feet into the garage!!! if someone had been standing near the front of the car, they might have been very seriously injured or even killed. My husband talked to a couple of people he knows (one is a mechanic), after the explosion, and they had never heard of anything like this happening to a vehicle! I just thank god no one was standing in front of that car!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Intake manifold failure on a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue, coolant leaked into oil causing a hydrolock. This could have easily caused the engine to explode if I had been on an interstate. Supposedly this is a common problem with these vehicles according to the mechanic. This leak can also cause a fire. I had to have repairs conducted to the tune of more than 2k.
The contact owns a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. While driving at an unknown speed, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the upper and lower intake manifolds needed to be replaced. The contact has had the part replaced on three different occasions, which originated with the check engine light illuminating. The current mileage was 117,000 and failure mileage was 52,363.
On sat, may 9, I drove my vehicle to work and parked in the business parking lot, turned off the ignition, left the vehicle to go inside and check on my employees. . Approximately 10 minutes later a CO-worker notified me that smoke was coming from my vehicle. Upon opening the hood I noticed a fire burning from the manifold into the engine cover and spark plug wires. Several attempts were made to extinguish the fire and get my dog out of the vehicle. The fire was eventually extinguished with a fire extinguisher. There was a strong oil smell. The incident was observed by CO-workers and captured by security cameras. Oil was leaking from valve cover and had ignited on the manifold and burned various plastic parts of the engine components. The vehicle was able to start and, accept for a hesitation in the engine, was drivable. Contacted dealer, was told that issue was part of a recall. Was told car would have to be held for 2-3 weeks for an assessment of cause before the minor repairs would be made. When I explained that my work requires driving, the dealers would not provide me with any type of vehicle. I was told I could take my car, even though it is recalled, without any of the repairs being made to make it safe from catching fire again.
The contact owns a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue. After the vehicle had been parked in the driveway for a week and a half, the battery needed to be charged. The contact owns a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue. While driving at an unknown speed and making a left turn, the contact heard an explosion that shook her vehicle. She lost control of the steering, the battery warning light illuminated, and smoke was present underneath the hood. A relative, who is also a mechanic, stated that the fluid on the manifold caused the vehicle to begin smoking and the steering knuckle fell off of the vehicle, which could also have caused fluid to leak and smoke to appear. A few months ago, the contact heard a high pitched sound in the steering wheel. Prior to the failure, she noticed an oil leak and the dealer replaced the pistons. The VIN was unavailable. The dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. The failure and current mileages were 137,000.
The contact owns a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. When the contact started his vehicle, it backfired from the exhaust. Next, the upper intake manifold shattered and the engine caught fire. The contact did not call the fire or police departments. He called the manufacturer and they stated that someone will get back in touch with him as soon as possible. No repairs have been made to the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 170,000.
The contact owns a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue. While driving at an unknown speed, the driver smelled smoke in the vehicle. The driver pulled off the road and all of the occupants exited the vehicle. The vehicle then made a loud explosive noise and the front end caught fire. The fire and police departments arrived and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was destroyed and a police report was filed. The manufacturer would not assume any liability for the vehicle. Shortly after the failure, the contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 09v116000, which stated that if the manifold is hot enough and the oil runs below the heat shield, it may ignite into a small flame and spread to the plastic spark plug wire channel and beyond, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. There were no injuries. The failure and current mileages were less than 53,000.
When starting the vehicle smoke came from under the hood. Consumer was informed that intake manifold blew out. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Concern regarding the plastic intake manifold. The engine was leaking coolant and the intake manifold required replacement. The consumer requested a refund.
1. Engine overheated, 2. Head and intake manifold gasket failed and piston were warped, . Replacement of gaskets and piston.
Upper intake manifold had to be replaced on 1998 Intrigue with 57000 miles. My mechanic and his partner are scheduled to fix three of these next week. My inquiries have lead me to understand that this is a very comon problem caused by a poor design.
Dealer indicates vehicle has multiple oil leaks, which are premature for vehicle mileage, and are result of "failed gaskets. " dealer replaced valve cover gaskets and intake manifold gasket, resolving problem.
The contact owns a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. The contact stated that the service engine warning light was illuminated.
