Power Steering Failed problems of the 2007 Saturn ION - part 1

Electrical power steering failed, warning light illuminated upon restart after an oil change, the 'usual' symptoms (hard to turn wheel, especially at low speeds, etc. ) for ps failure. After two start/stop cycles, the failure resolved itself making me think it is a wiring/sensor issue. This happened over two months ago, and the problem has not reappeared. Aprox 60000 miles at the time of failure. There is likely something failing here, and it is safety related, but it is intermittant at this point.

Power steering failed this morning. No warning and no previous issues. It worked one moment then didn't the next. Pwr str came on the dash alerts. I saw a 2014 recall yet my VIN is not included.

Sudden power steering failure, the steering continued to work but without the power assist. We were attempting to back out of the driveway, very low speed, turning. This reset with shutting the car off and restarting. Gm/Saturn state this is not covered by the recall.

Loss of power steering again. This will be my third recall replacement part. Power steering has failed and repaired by 2 gm dealerships. Gm suggested for safety reasons towing car would be advised but guess who has to pay for the towing me not gm who manufacturer unsafe vehicles. Nhtsa you've lost interest in helping and moved on to the next manufacturer air bag problem. I now understand what risk means. My car falls in that risk percentage.

In September 2014, the power steering on my 2007 Saturn Ion went out. I had it towed to a dealership and had the power steering motor replaced under a recall. The power steering went out again a few days later but came on again after a day. I took it to a different dealership and they were unable to find a problem. The problem occurred again in June 2015 and happened twice in four days. I took it back to the dealership that did the original power steering motor repair and was told that the power steering column had failed and that the column was not affected by the massive 2014 recall. The repair is going to cost $950. I am skeptical, particularly after reading several similar complaints, that this is not a systemic problem and it could be a serious safety issue if the power steering fails while driving.

On may 19, 2014, the power steering failed. The vehicle had to be towed both times. The ignition switch was replaced.

I had just made a right turn into a side street and was proceeding down a slight hill when I heard three quick tones from the dashboard. A message that the power steering had failed appeared where the odometer is on the dash. I was able to steer the car to the curb. I turned the ignition off and then restarted the car and the power steering functioned again. The same problem has happened once in each of the three days following that initial incident.

The vehicle was pulled over, the vehicle would not move, and the strut was busted, when the contact was trying to get off of the road. The failure recurred on multiple occasions, the vehicle was towed to a dealer, diagnosed code c0550 inspected failure of power steering assembly. The vehicle was repaired, the manufacturer was notified, the approximate failure mileage was 77,195. The vehicle failure was related to NHTSA recall notification number: 14v153000 (steering). Rw.

I was driving down the street and the power steering failed. I pulled over to a nearby shop to have it looked at and was told to restart the car. The problem went away. Fast forward to the last 2 weeks (today is 5-June-14) and this issue has occured at least 10 times. Now being this is the same system that was used on the chevy cobalt and pontiac g5, both of which were subject to recalls for replacement, I don't know why my Ion was recalled and this problem fixed. I have to drive long distances at times and for my power steering to fail while I'm on the highway for a known problem is not acceptable.

From 2010-present (2013), the vehicle has exhibited intermittent power steering failure. Failures would occur after driving the vehicle for some time, ranging from several minutes, to several hours. Power steering would cut out while driving, presumably after extensive utilization of the power steering mechanisms. At this point a chime would sound and the "check engine" dash light would illuminate, indicating an issue with the power steering. Power steering loss would remain until the vehicle was shut off and restarted. Upon the restart of the vehicle, the power steering would again resume normal operation. Failures would occur at sporadic intervals. No common factor could be easily identified such as temperature, humidity, steering intensity or trip length, although these may be factors. Steering failure events occur approximately once every 8 months.

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the power steering assist failed with the illumination of the warning indicator. The vehicle was driven to an authorized dealer, who replaced the power steering motor kit, a blown fuse, the harness connectors and the power connector however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000.

Halfway during the half mile commute to my home from work on December 21, 2012, the power steering failed. This happens very frequently. I hear the chime and then the pwr strng light comes on and I have to steer manually. I often have to stop my car and turn it off just to reset the steering. Sometimes it is very hard to turn the car safely while driving very slowly and/or parking. I feel that gm should be forced to recall this problem as I see from this site that it's a common and known problem. If an elderly, physically weak or inexperienced driver should have this happen, it could result in many serious accidents. I've owned my vehicle for 6+ years since brand new.

The power steering failed completely while driving in close quarters on the university of georgia campus,. I was narrowly able to avoid hitting a telephone pole when turning off the road. After stalling and restarting the car, it worked for 3-4 minutes before again failing completely. Using repeated cycles of driving until it failed, turning the car off, then restarting it, I was able to safely get home, but the power steering continued to fail recurrently just a few minutes after each restart.

When parallel parking and the wheel is turned all the way in one direction then the other, the power steering fails. It is then impossible to turn the car on a tight turn radius even with significant driver effort, making parallel parking dangerous. The car must be turned off, the steering wheel cranked from side to side, then restarted before the power steering reactivates and the wheel turns normally.

Multiple power steering failures and consistent power steering warnings. Stopped the engine and restarted but the power steering failed again within minutes. Power steering motor not yet replaced under gm power steering assist bulletin 10187.

Within 2 minutes of driving my 2007 Saturn Ion the power steering fails. This problem happens every time I drive. If I restart my vehicle the same thing happens, the power steering fails within 2 minutes. I then have to manually steer my vehicle for the duration of my trip.

Electric assist power steering failure.

Within the last month, this vehicle has begun to experience power steering failures at random intervals. As you are driving, the pwr str light will come on and the power steering itself will fail. This happens at random times, occurring several times on some days, and other times going several days with no occurrence. Upon failure, if you turn off the engine, and restart the car, the steering will work again. There is no set speed for this occurrence either. I've had it happen on the freeway at full speed, (60mph) and at other times in parking lots where I'm doing 5 to 10mph. I am filing this report because my research has led me to believe this is not an uncommon problem, not only with Saturn, but with other gm products as well.

I was driving with my young daughter in the car and as I was turning onto another road, the powering steering failed and I was nearly in an accident. I read that gm thought there wasn't enough evidence to warrant a recall for this problem! it's electronically control and has failed on thousands of people. Do we have to wait until people are fatally injured before they fix this?! we have enough to worry about while we're driving and if this senseless issue cause my little girl to get hurt, I would personally go to the gm headquarters and kick them in their multi billion dollar asses!.

We have had three occasions in which the power steering has failed while in motion on the 2007 Saturn Ion. This is a notorious problem, over 5000 complaints for the same issue, with this vehicle and yet you have not issued a recall. Power steering going out while driving is a massive safety issue. Luckily the first time it went out I was driving and not my wife, b/c at 50+ mph she would not have been able to handle the car. The steering wheel on the car is quite small and driving without power steering is very difficult even for a reasonably experienced individual driving without power steering. You are failing to do your job and putting people's lives at risk as this is an issue that you supposedly investigated in 2009. This is completely inexcusable and an immediate recall should be issued before you get people killed.

The electric steering keeps going out and took it to an authrized Saturn dealer and they said that the would have to check it to see why its going out as there has been recalled on the electric steering in the pontiac g6 which has the same problem and carries the same system and the dealer told me if its not the motor I have to pay 97. 50 for them to find out its not the motor in the steering plus what it cost to fix it there has been problems with the electric steering there should be a full recall on all the one that uses the same part with the ones that have been recalled all ready this is a big safety issue and gm should pay to correct the problem not charge a customer to check whats wrong with it as there is still some warrenty on the car this problem needs fixed and I dont have the money to pay out the car only has 55,600 miles on it shouldnt be having problems like this hope you can help with this issue and get gm to do a recall on this for theses cars power steering failure like that makes the car hard to steer.

The gm dealer advised that the steering column needed to be replaced. I contacted general motors because they had sent an earlier letter saying there could be a problem with the power steering element. The district representative subsequently advised that they do not know why my steering column needs to be replaced (e. G. Cracked, leaking, corroded, whatever) but they do know it is not the power steering element. The representative did say that gm would pay for the parts but I would have to pay for the labor. I asked him to send me this in writing so I'd have it to take to the dealer but have not been able to get this despite follow-up messages left for the rep. It does seem there is an issue with the steering columns of this particular Saturn model but I guess I'll just have to wait until the power steering fails to get gm to do the right thing.

My power steering just fails on me while driving. It is very dangerous and I cant believe nothing is being done about this. I called Saturn and there is a special warr. If you have less then 100,000 miles. I have 112,000 so I have to pay for it. I dont see why when all these people are reporting the same problem.

2007 Saturn Ion, bought used 2 months ago. 47k miles. Power steering failed many times while parking car, especially parallel parking. Last week, an audible alarm sounded, and the message read "power steer"or "pwrsteer", cant remember whcih, and alarmed (dinged) all the way home. Had absolutely no power steering on winding road. Manual states to have repair facility check auto. Steering fluid was full. Next time we started the car to drive it to repair facility, alarm didnt sound and steering seemed fine. Ion was checked for "codes" and none were found on code reader,and tech was unable to duplicate problem. Still have problems with steering when trying to parallel park. No alarm or total loss of power steering again, yet.

The electronic power steering continually fails resulting in dangerous driving conditions. This should have been included in the earlier recall for cobalts as the parts are identical.
