Catalytic Convertor Problems of Saturn ION

Saturn ION owners have reported 3 problems related to catalytic convertor (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/16/2013

2004 Saturn Ion. Consumer writes in regards to electronic power steering failure. The consumer stated she first started having front suspension problems, which the dealer fixed free of charge. The exhaust was leaking and she paid to have it replaced, along with the catalytic converter. Also, the horn stopped working. The consumer received a letter in July 2012, from gm stating the warranty was being extended because the electric power steering could fail. On December 16, 2013, the power steering failed, as the consumer was leaving a parking lot. She had to use extra force to turn the steering wheel. After a couple of minutes, it was back to normal. A test revealed, there was indeed a failure. When the consumer called gm, she was informed the extended warranty had expired on 11/28/13 the consumer no longer owns the vehicle. Updated 02/5/14.

2 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 08/24/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion hybrid. While driving 55 mph with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle stalled. No warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted approximately four minutes later. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they replaced the catalytic converter. The second failure also occurred while driving 55 mph. The contact stated that the interior lights and the steering failed. The vehicle was able to be restarted approximately ten minutes later. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they installed a wire from the hybrid battery to the generator. The contact believed that the electrical system was the cause of the failures. The current mileage was 6,036 and failure mileage was 6,000. Updated 01-16-08. The consumer stated a new catalytic converter was installed.

3 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

There's a strong sulfur odor on the inside and outside of the vehicle. Consumer feels the smell maybe caused by a failure in the catalytic converter. The smell could make occupants ill especially anyone with respiratory conditions.
