Subaru Impreza owners have reported 68 problems related to air bag light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Impreza based on all problems reported for the Impreza.
It is happening when I am driving or parked. Passenger occupancy not being detected. When passenger sits in the seat, air bag light will come on on the dashboard and it will show that passenger airbag is disabled, it's been like that for the past 2 years. .

The passenger airbag light is off at all times. I am presuming it is not functioning. It used to turn on and off in the last few years and I was able to fix it following the manual instructions but now it is permanently off.

The passenger's seat OCS malfunctions with terrifying frequency. The car will be in motion with the passenger's seat occupied and the airbag light will illuminate on the dashboard. Once again while the car is in motion. I have seen many posts detailing the same experience. Subaru has recalled other cars for this problem. My 2013 Impreza needs to be included as well.

The vehicle was park at my home. Upon starting the vehicle the airbag light illuminated. Subaru of America was contacted and an appointment was set up with the local Subaru dealership. The vehicle was dropped off that evening and was looked at the next day. After inspecting the vehicle I was notified that the passenger seat occupancy sensor had an issue and the passenger seat would need to be replaced. They claimed this was due to the seat being wet. The vehicle was purchased used in 2018 with 35,278 miles and now has around 46,000 miles. The seat has never been wet in my time owning it and was not wet prior to owning it to my knowledge. The vehicle is equipped with heated seats and I believe this issue is in line with last years forester passenger airbag sensor recall in which 366,000 vehicles where recalled for a very similar issue. I have not yet heard back from the dealership, but they are not currently aware if Subaru of America is willing to cover cost to resolve this issue. Since they are unsure when Subaru would get back to them, I picked up the vehicle and it is currently parked at my home. I was informed to avoid safety risks to not have occupants travel in the passenger seat for the time being as the passenger airbag could turn off at any point. Since picking up the vehicle, the airbag light does illuminate upon start, but no longer stays on. If a follow up contact is required I would prefer an email over a call.

Passenger airbag indicator will show off even though a passenger is seated. This happens whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion.
My airbag light turns on and off intermittently. The passenger side sometimes says "passenger airbag on" inappropriately (nobody is sitting in the passenger seat). Also it sometimes says "passenger airbag off" if somebody is sitting in the passenger seat. I am nervous if I get in a crash my airbag system will no protect my passenger. There has been a recall issued for 2012 Subaru Impreza airbag systems, and the same system is used in the 2013 model, so I'm not sure why this is not being fixed.
I recently began to experience an issue with my 2013 Impreza - in the beginning, when the passenger seat was occupied, the detection system would failed to detect the passenger, and the passenger airbag light would come on, indicating that the passenger airbag was not activated. I had the issue diagnosed while in for my regular maintenance, and it was determined to be a malfunction of the occupant detection system. Over the course of a few months, the frequency of the issue increased, to the point that the passenger airbag is rarely activated. I understand the occupancy detection system is under recall for Subaru's forester model; though my seats are not heated, and my car is slightly older, my vehicle is experiencing the same malfunction, I believe it too should be subject to the recall and repaired by Subaru.
Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Subaru Impreza. The contact took the vehicle in for a diagnostic ( air bag light did not illuminate when the passenger side seat was occupied ) to the dealer metro west Subaru, 948 worcester st, natick, MA 0 1760, they determined that the air bag sensor on the passenger side seat had to be replaced and in order to perform the repair, a new seat had to be purchased. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000. Bp.
Passenger side airbag is turned off with a passenger sitting in the seat when the seat gets wet when something is spilled, or when the passenger sits in seat with damp/wet clothes because they got wet because it is raining outside. The passenger air bag light works properly when the seat dries out in a few days. This has happened multiple times , most recently being a few weeks ago. The light does not work properly when the car is moving or stopped.
When driving with a front seat passenger the passenger becomes unrecognized and air bag lights come on. This happens intermittently. This happens will driving.

Possibly related to takata recall after local dealer serviced the recall, the air bag light came on. Dealer has said it is fault code 26, which is related to a failure of the passenger airbag indicator. This problem is pervasive and wide spread, a simple google search will garnish tens and possibly hundreds of people citing this failure. On top of Subaru not being forthcoming with this information, the dealer has only made problem worse in their attempt to fix what should be a simple wiring issue that many people are able to fix on their own. It is unclear if the passenger airbag will deploy while this code is present. We believe it to be related to recall as the passenger wiring harness is involved in the repair and could have been incorrectly installed or the problem was their and the dealer did not tell us about it.

The passenger air bag light does not come on or activate when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. The air bag light in the dash by the speedometer also comes on randomly. The exact same thing is happening that other people have commented about on this website. The 2012s were recalled, but not the 2013s with the same parts?? get it together Subaru. . .
The airbag symbol turns on at almost random times, indicating that there is an error with the airbag system. About 50% of the time I drive, the airbag system light will come on and stay on during my drive, with a passenger in the front seat. Sometimes if I turn off the vehicle and turn it back on, the airbag light will turn off - but there is no consistent pattern. Today the light came on, I parked the car for about 2 hours when I turned it back on the light was still illuminated.
The occupant detection sensor (ods) cannot detect a person when seated in the passenger. I have attempted to sit in the passenger seat with the engine on and off; while in motion and also when the car is stationary. The passenger air bag light on the center dash remains illuminated "off" also, the airbag symbol turns on at almost random times, indicating that there is an error with the airbag system. About 50% of the time I drive, the airbag system light will come on and stay on during my drive, whether I am driving alone or with a passenger in the front seat. Sometimes if I turn off the vehicle and turn it back on, the airbag light will turn off - but there is no consistent pattern.
Srs airbag light stays on. Car only gas 150 miles.

Passenger air bag turns off while occupant is in the passenger seat. Also seems to happen when I plug my phone charger into the car. Along with air bag light going off, the electrical systems in the car powered down while I was on the highway. This is a serious safety concern. Happens while driving or stationary.
I've been having issues with the passenger airbag light for years. I have brought it into the dealership many times over the course of 4 years and they cannot reproduce it, and often state that there is no record of others reporting this problem. When I have a passenger in the seat, the car doesnt register them and the airbag is turned off. Whether the seat is damp or bone dry, moving or not, it still fails most of the time, which is very worrisome. While the 2012 model have been recalled, the 2013 has not, despite the fact that they use the same exact technology. This has made me unlikely to buy another Subaru in the future, because it is a very dangerous and serious issue. The 2012 was recalled, please recall the 2013 also before someone dies or has a serious injury!.
I have been having airbag problems with the passenger seat. Whenever there is a passenger sitting, the amber indicator light is in the off position and there is a red airbag light on the dashboard. It doesn't matter if the passenger is dry or damp, if the car is stationary or driving on the street/highway. Sometimes, when there is no passenger and I place my cell phone on the seat, the airbag indicator light turns on as if there is a passenger. This is a serious issue in case of an accident. Nice to know that Subaru cares so much about safety. The 2012 was recalled, please recall the 2013 also before someone dies or has a serious injury!.
On a hot, long drive with a sweaty friend in the front passenger seat, the passenger airbag turned off according to the dash indicator. The airbag error indicator also turned on. It was a long, highway drive and outdoor temperatures were 80-100f, though I was running ac inside.
Cleaned upholstery and seats slightly damp, when I started car the red air bag light came on and passenger seat showed air bag off even though a passenger was in seat. It has been two days and air bag light is still on and passenger bag shows as off even if passenger is in seat. As soon as I start the car the air bag light comes on and stays on while driving.
My mother judith whitley has an issue with her airbag light in her subura Impreza car off and on first time last year and she brought into Subaru and the light went off they told her next time it happens to bring in right away then she was driving last week and the light popped on again she called Subaru America headquarters about they told her it was a safety issue she and sent her in the Subaru dealer in bloomfield NJ to get a diagnostic test to see what is wrong with the car after a couple of hours of checking they said it was nothing wrong with the car but when my mom asked the lady if she got into an accident would her airbags deploy the lady responded with she is not sure it depends so they released her car without being 100% sure also, I've heard my mother complain about the seatbelt tightens up around her neck while she was driving certain things in this car is unsafe and I fear for my moms' safety and my owns when I ride in this car now because on the unclarity if the airbags are gong work or not my mom's phone automatically records so I have attached the convo so you can hear the employees uncertainty the car was sold to my mom pre-owned and I'm not sure if the car came with issues because the cars history was not provided to her, some of the issues the car has can be from whatever happened to the car before my mom owned it because my mom does not drive much so the car should not be having glitches and malfunctions they claim that the glitch in the car came from a water spill on the seat nobody spilled water in the car since my mom owned it so that is a mystery as well only two people ride in that car shes the driver and im the passenger needed you can download recording at this link https://vocaroo. Recall in other Impreza in same year model, but not mine specifically. Same issue occurs with airbag occupancy sensor in passenger seat. Airbag light comes on with any amount of weight in passenger seat, airbag however does not turn on. Stays off with passenger in seat. This was recalled in many other 2012-2014 Impreza. Subaru confirmed that passenger occupancy in my Impreza is same part as occupany sensor recalled in other Impreza. I was sold this car by an authorized dealer with this issue (not the company listed on the receipts provided). Had to pay to get it fixed for inspection. Have to replace seat bottom, almost $700 for seat alone. This is dangerous and unfair. Subaru acknowledged the problem by giving me $500 goodwill repair certificate, but not full price of repair even though this has been recalled in many other vehicles.
6/1/2018-driving from kc to st. Louis-drove 1. 25 hours-stopped for break-drove another 1. 5 hours and air bag light came on unprovoked. Turn car off and back on fixed. Return trip 6/3/2018 from st. Louis to kc - same scenario-drove approx 2. 5 hours-stopped - drove additional 1 hour and air bag light came on. Turn car off and on and is off currently. Was driving around 70 mph when both instances occurred.
Takata recall - I purchased my car used from a dealership in may 2018 and almost immediately the airbag light began to malfunction. The airbag light will shut off regardless of whether a purse, backpack or person is sitting in the passenger seat. In some cases there are no electronics, others there are. It can also shut off if someone sits in the car with wet clothing (after a rain storm or after swimming). This is extremely dangerous and not acceptable that this has not been addressed as a recall issue. This vehicle was manufactured in 2012, but is a 2013 model. With the exact same airbag and seat features as 2011-2012 Subarus with recalls issued, this is extremely negligent on Subaru's part. I should not have to make passengers sit in the back seat. This is my first Subaru, based on friend recommendations, but it is highly unlikely I would buy another due to the lack of responsibility taken by Subaru to repair this extremely dangerous defect. I believed that Subaru took pride in making safety a number one priority with their vehicles, but no longer believe that to be the case. I also don't believe that spending $1,100 on a replacement seat, with no guarantee of this fixing the problem, should be my out of pocket expense. Please issue a recall and prove you are the reputable company I believed you to be.
The passenger seat sensor that controls airbag is faulty. Sometimes with a passenger in the seat, the airbag light will go on indicating that the airbag is disabled even though passenger is in seat and belted. This can always be reset by turning igniotion off and on again. Also sensor incorrectly thinks there is a passenger in the seat even when very light packages or groceries are on the seat weighing 2-12 pounds. I've called Subaru and they claim sensor is set to 27 punds or more, which is clearly not working here. Subaru will not fix this under warranty so I think NHTSA should look at all the similar complaints here and investigate.
The contact owns a 2005 Subaru Impreza. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v323000 (air bags). The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to mark miller Subaru midtown at (801) 268-3734 (3535 state st, salt lake city, ut 84115) where the front passenger side air bag was replaced. Soon after the recall repair was completed, the air bag indicator remained illuminated. The manufacturer stated that the recall was completed and the contact would be charged a diagnostic fee. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 161,000.

I have 2012 Subaru Impreza, and having a problem with the airbag light. When someone sits on the front passenger seat, the passenger side airbag indicator turns on after a few minutes, and then driver side airbag light comes on. There is a factory recall for occupant detection system (ods), and the ods control unit was replaced by the dealer (4/18/2017); however, the problem continued. I took the car to the dealer again (11/6/2017), and was told that the problem was due to the sensor mat, which is not under recall. It is $1,300 to fix it. This car has only 29k mileage, and ods sensor mad went bad! why is sensor mat not covered by recall?.
Every time it rains or is wet outside my air bag light comes on and acts as if I dont have a passenger next to me, but I do. They are sitting with seat belt on in passenger seat. But the lights on my dash say otherwise. This issue only happens when its wet out. And it shows the light on dash when im driving, not when I first start the car.
I was driving down the interstate with a passenger and the airbag light came on and the light for the passenger airbag said off. While driving, my passenger looked up some troubleshooting for this issue. Apparently there is a recall for other same year, same makes and models of my vehicle. My vehicle is not part of this recall based on what month it was made. After I stopped the car and restarted it, the light did not illuminate again until I was going at a high rate of speed again. This has happened more than once. Every time with a passenger and driving on an expressway.
I purchased my 2013 Subaru Impreza as a certified pre-owned vehicle with ~54,000 miles on it in August 2016. Over the last year, I've noticed an intermittent problem with the occupant airbag sensor in the front passenger seat. Sometimes, when there is a passenger sitting in the front seat and when the vehicle is in motion, whether on a highway or on a side street, the passenger airbag off light will come on, and the red air bag light in the driver information center will come on- meaning that the airbag is off when someone is sitting in the seat and the vehicle is in motion. Initially, I thought this could have been a fluke so I took the wait and see approach. This past spring, the problem started happening more, so I've since started documenting the problem every time it happens. I noticed that this problem happens more when the passenger side is damp, whether it is because I'm driving in a hot and humid location, or passenger has damp clothes due to coming back from the beach or river, exercising, or just being plain warm & sweaty. There is a recall for other 2012 Imprezas for this exact problem, but my car, which I believe has the same sensors as the recalled ones for the 2012 Impreza, is not covered by the recall.

I do not think that I should have to pay for a repair of something that is a known, widespread issue among Subaru Imprezas. I think that my car should be repaired under this recall. This problem is alarming, given that the air bag may not function properly if the car was involved in an accident.

Car will not move for several seconds after hitting the gas and air bag light comes on. Coasting to a red light stop downhill, when I start to make left turn into traffic car does not respond to gas pedal for 2-4 seconds and when it starts moving it feels like its in a high gear bucking like a manuel transmission. It is a cvt . Last time this happened I rolled into the intersection almost to get hit by a truck, luckily it swerved to avoid me. I'm scared to drive this car. Enclosed is a picture of the air bag light on while I am driving, extremely unsafe vehicle.

When a passenger is in the seat, when driving or parked, the airbag sign illuminates off. Occasionally the airbag indicator will illuminate on the dashboard. At times the sensor will sense the smallest things, such as a small box of tissues, and the airbag will turn on without a passenger. This is an ongoing problem for the last 3-4 months.
Passenger airbag deactivates while a passenger is in the seat. It happens intermittently. There are no electronics plugged into my car. The passenger airbag indicator light above my radio states that it is off when someone is sitting in the seat. My srs airbag light is also on. This has been happening since I purchased the car in 2014. My car is still under warranty and there does not seem to be a resolution in sight/ my car is in the shop right now and they are telling me my car is working as designed.
