Air Bag Light On Problems of Subaru Impreza - part 2

I purchased my 2013 Subaru Impreza as a certified pre-owned vehicle with ~54,000 miles on it in August 2016. Over the last year, I've noticed an intermittent problem with the occupant airbag sensor in the front passenger seat. Sometimes, when there is a passenger sitting in the front seat and when the vehicle is in motion, whether on a highway or on a side street, the passenger airbag off light will come on, and the red air bag light in the driver information center will come on- meaning that the airbag is off when someone is sitting in the seat and the vehicle is in motion. Initially, I thought this could have been a fluke so I took the wait and see approach. This past spring, the problem started happening more, so I've since started documenting the problem every time it happens. I noticed that this problem happens more when the passenger side is damp, whether it is because I'm driving in a hot and humid location, or passenger has damp clothes due to coming back from the beach or river, exercising, or just being plain warm & sweaty. There is a recall for other 2012 Imprezas for this exact problem, but my car, which I believe has the same sensors as the recalled ones for the 2012 Impreza, is not covered by the recall.

An airbag malfunction indicator was displayed on the instrument display when I set my cellphone on the empty passenger seat. It also activated when my daughters were riding in the passenger seat. I purchased this vehicle from a local Subaru dealer on April 4, 2017.

Two specific issues. 1) the passenger side air bag will not activate, according to the indicator light, when there is a passenger in the car. 2) the sensor in the passengers side that rings a bell if the passenger is not wearing a seat belt will go off while the car is being driven, even though there is no passenger in the passenger seat - dangerously distracting for the driver. The start date below is the date the car was purchased, as the issue has occurred since purchase.

When the passenger seat is damp, the passenger occupancy sensor stops working and deactivates the passenger airbag when an adult is occupying the front passenger seat. When this happens, the front passenger's frontal airbag indicator (located in the center display) turns "off" (even if an adult is sitting in the seat). The red srs airbag system warning (light located in the instrument cluster) turns on when this issue occurs. Eventually the light shuts off by itself. This issue happens regardless whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion.

The airbag sensor in the passenger seat has failed 3 times while the car was under warranty and now again out of warranty. When a passenger is sitting in the seat while driving, the airbag sensor doesn't recognize the passenger's weight, and the airbag light will not turn on, putting my passenger at risk. Under warranty, carr Subaru in beaverton oregon replaced the sensor each time it failed. They briefly explained to me that the sensor "fails all the time" and "its poorly designed. " if I understood them correctly, these type of sensors are no longer used in newer models of my car. I am now having the airbag issue again and I am not covered by warranty, I feel this is a major safety issue. Subaru should take responsibility for this faulty system and replace it completely, rather that just replacing the sensor they already know is faulty.

Passenger airbag light activates/ illuminates/ stays on when passenger with wet/ moist clothing sits in passenger seat. This also occurs after cleaning the passenger seat with upholstery cleaner and the seat has not fully dried. Upon reading about this problem, I found that a recall was issued for 2012 models. Please include 2013 model as this is a serious safety issue.

With a passenger in the front seat the airbag light will turn on and the dash will report "passenger airbag off. " this happens anywhere from immediately after the car is turned on, before it is placed in drive, to an hour after the car has been running. We do frequently have electronics plugged in, but I just learned of the possible connection and have not tried to troubleshoot it. The seats are heated. The airbag light does not turn on without a front seat passenger. First started in June of 2016 and has been happening intermittently since then, approximately 75% of the time a passenger is in the front seat.

When my wife sits on a 3 inch foam cushion on the passenger side the passenger side to sit more comfortably (she is 4'11' and has hip problems); the passenger side air bag indicator only goes into on mode intermittently. This happen when entering the car and continues while the car is in motion. This could be dangerous in an accident, if not notice be the passenger or driver. Corrective action believe it or not involve. S bouncing up and down on the seat. A side effect seems to be, that when the sign is in off position, the seat belts lockup and constrict the passenger.

Takata recall: I first purchased this vehicle and it had an airbag light on, but without any history of an accident. The weight sensor on the dashboard which notifies you of someone sitting in the passenger seat changes from on to off just fine. However, the airbag light has remained on for the length of my ownership. I want to know if this is a defective takata airbag and my specific make and model was not included in the recall list of vehicles, but in truth that is the main issue. I has had the vehicle inspected an there does not seem to be any other contributing factor including a fuse shortage or faulty dome light.

While driving on the highway the dashboard air bag light activated while both front seats were occupied. The lights went off when the vehicle was shut off and restarted but activated again within approximately two to three miles of driving again.

My repairs are scheduled for 6/1/2015.

We made an appointment and sent the car to garavel Subaru dealer in norwalk, CT on 9/5/13 at the milage around 29,000miles. They looked at the car for just 10 minutes and could not find any issue related to this. Same issue occurred again once after above visit. Passenger air bag light turns from on to off with a passenger sitting there. Manual says this happens when there is moisture in the seat. First of all, the airbag should not turn off for that reason, that is a safety problem. Second, it turns off even when there is no moisture. It scares me. I need to know that the airbag is still working even if that off light is on if my son is sitting there.

When driving with a passenger and going on a highway, the air bag indicator for the passenger and driver shows "off", meaning if there was a collision, there would be no air bags. After several trips to the dealer, they finally test drove with a passenger and got it to fail. The sensors in the passenger seat were replaced. There are other reports on this problem and Subaru should recall the vehicles. This is a serious safety issue.

While driving the vehicle, the passenger air bag indicator was indicating that it was off while a passenger was sitting in the seat. I started noticing that the front passenger airbag light wasn't always "on" when there was a passenger seated there. It seemed to malfunction more frequently when a heavier person was on the seat. Attempts to get it to activate (unbuckling and rebuckling seatbelt, bouncing on the seat, stopping the car and restarting) all had no effect. This problem has continued intermittently.

Front passengers sitting correctly that weigh between ~95 and 120lbs do not activate the airbag or the airbag light is intermittent.

Passenger air bag light goes on and off. My wife weights 120 and it some time goes on and stays on then the next minute it goes off. I have had the dealer address this issue twice now and same response. "don't worry it will deploy regardless if the light goes on or off". Honestly can't believe that. They also said (sherman oaks Subaru" that they have addressed the problem to Subaru and they said its a light issue and don't worry about it. That is not a good answer since this is a safety issue. Plus they say they can't duplicate the problem. In the iwsti chat room their are about 10 complaints of the same problem for the 2008 Subaru wrx sti. This needs to get addressed!.

Passenger airbag failures in 2008 Subaru Impreza outback sport: I purchased a 2008 Subaru Impreza outback sport one month ago, 4/17/08. I realized a few days after owning the car that the passenger airbag is only activated by passengers over 130 pounds. I am 49 years old, 5'4" and weigh 125#. The airbag is off anytime I am in the passenger seat, no matter how I sit in the seat. Same result (off) happens with my 16 year old daughter who is 120# and a couple of her friends who are between 105-115#. I then had two children, 87# and 95# sit in the passenger seat. The passenger airbag was off. The passenger airbag light is on when my sons are in the seat. They weigh 150# and 160#. I called Subaru service and they said the passenger airbag is set to be on for persons over 80# and they recommended I bring the car in to get checked. I took my car to Subaru service and they said "the passenger airbag is operating properly according to government standards. " I called Subaru corporate office and they said the same thing. I went back to the Subaru dealer and sat in two identical Impreza outback sports and the exact same result that the passenger airbag was off. I also sat in four 2009 Subaru foresters and the passenger airbag was off in 2 of the 4. I sat in two 2008 legacy outback wagons and the passenger airbag was on. I sat in two 2008 tribecas and the passenger airbag was on. Subaru is not being cooperative in resolving the situation.
