4 Clutch problem of the 2008 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

I bought used 11/2009 with approximately 27,000 miles. The clutch was always very stiff which I assumed was normal. Shortly after purchase I began to notice a squeak when I depressed the clutch. The squeak was fairly intermittent but became progressively worse for a time and then turned into a clicking noise. It was frequent enough to be annoying but I just assumed the clutch assembly was squeaky and there was no other problem. Over the last few months I have been having more and more difficulty engaging the clutch and assumed that I needed a new one. I took the car into a mechanic to replace the clutch but was turned away because of what he found: when the clutch pedal is depressed, it, along with the brake pedal, move to the left and forward. Furthermore, the slave cylinder inside the engine compartment moves out and up when the clutch pedal is depressed. After doing some research online I have found that this is not an uncommon problem for the Subaru clutch assembly, though no recall has be initiated. What happens is that the welds on the firewall break, causing the abnormal movement of the clutch and brake pedals and even a warping of the firewall, not allowing the clutch to disengage.

The failure mileage was approximately 10,000 and the current mileage was approximately 20,000.

7 Clutch problem of the 2000 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/14/2005

I have a 2000 Subaru Impreza wagon. . . . I bought it Nov 2004 to use in my business. I bought it mainly because Subarus are reliable, economical cars. . . It had 55,000 miles on it. . . Now it has 75,000 miles on it and the clutch is really slipping badly; not good when you need to accelerate quickly into traffic. I know people with Subarus that didn't have to replace the clutch until almost 200,000 miles. I really feel there is something defective with my particular car for it to be slipping so badly at such low mileage. . . Im the sole driver of the car and I do not ride the clutch. . . . It is now Dec 14, 05 and it has been slipping for a couple months now. Is there anything the manufacturer can do to help me with this problem? I love the car but am very dissatisfied with this problem.

8 Clutch problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 11/14/2004

Unable or difficult to place car in gear while driving on multiple occasions. First total failure occurred in roadway during rush hour traffic and left me stranded roadside. Second total failure occurred while exiting freeway and was able to eventually put car in gear after several minutes. Original dealer, regional service manager and corporate offices were unresponsive and/or uncooperative relative to my requests for visual inspection of the clutch. After multiple requests, assurance of legal action and refusal to drive the vehicle due to fear of being involved in a collision, other dealership agreed to replace entire clutch assembly under warranty.

9 Clutch problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 05/16/2004

I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza rs, this vehicle seems to be like lots of others, the vehicles shudders and jerks alot when I'm pulling off in the morning, evening, whether its cold or hot. I took it to shelors which wanted to tear it apart and charge me, when the car is still under warranty. This vehicle does this atleast 3 times a week. The car only has 35588 miles so actually its still under the new car warranty. I have a hard time sometimes getting the car into reverse (manuel trans. ) I haven't had any acciden't as of this date so, I'm putting the date that I'm filling this out into the incident date box.

10 Clutch problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 05/11/2004

Was at the local track on run what you brung night. Lined up against an srt-4. Light turned green. I accelerated trying to get a holeshot. I heard a loud banging noise. Sounded like the transmission/clutch giving up. The srt-4 was way ahead of me. I shifted through the gears and was not able to catch up. That srt-4 was fast. The lack of power in my sti really dishonored my family. It forced me to be humiliated. I took the car to the dealer and was told that the car was normal and to expect to be outmatched by cars like the Dodge srt-4. They never did tell me anything about the transmission/clutch noise.

11 Clutch problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 10/02/2003

Clutch shutters upon startup. I can't believe this is a normal clutch function as Subaru mentions. I've had the car for 1 year and would like to sell it. The problem, how do I sell this car to someone else with a clutch that violently shutters when cold. It's a matter of good ethics which Subaru doesn't have.

12 Clutch problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 09/11/2003

I bought a 2004 Subaru Impreza wrx sti in July 2003 from bob baker Subaru in el cajon, California and ever since then I have had one problem after the next. Please be advised that all servicing is completed at the lancaster Mazda-Subaru location where I live. Several cosmetic parts were defective when the car was purchased such the trunk latch did not function, the back seat was unhooked, the seat lever that moves the seat in half, the cup holder does not function properly, and the head lights fogged up. Mechanical failure has also occurred. It has had an odd noise in the engine since the beginning which Subaru claims is normal for this car because it is a "racecar". The starter sometimes grinds when attempting to start the car, Subaru could not diagnose this problem. The left rear chassis makes an odd noise when rolling that Subaru could not diagnose. It has gotten progressively worse and now when you turn the vehicle it makes a loud metal against metal screech. As of 6/18/2004 the engine has begun to fail. When the rpms reach between 4000-5000 the car cuts out prior to accelerating and a burning smell is detected. I spoke with the original dealership I bought the car from and they acknowledged that when this car is driven a little bit harder than normal they are noticing that several of the Impreza wrx sti's are being brought back in with engine failure. They have noted several problems such as turbo bog, overheating, poor performance, and the catalytic converters burning up. There is obviously a distinct problem with this over $30,000 and I think a complaint should be filed against Subaru. When it is out of warranty and it breaks, as it will, it will just sit in a garage because I cannot afford to fix a car that is manufactured poorly. Subaru has advised that this car is a race car and it is far from that. They should be held responsible for all problems arising from this car since they obviously manufactured a poorly made vehicle.

14 Clutch problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 05/01/2002

The clutch shudders and slips horribly on cold starts in 1st gear. The whole car will shake due to how horrible it is. Stops shuddering after 15 mins of stop and go. Dealer said it is normal and many customers complain, but that is the way the Subaru clutch behaves. -- btw: this site does not seem to show anywhere near the amount of clutch shudder issues I have heard of, and it seems that some people have posted clutch shudder issues under the wrong part defect.

15 Clutch problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/02/2002

Severe clutch shudder during low speed operation ( in 1st gear and starting to move from a stop) when clutch components are cold. Shudder continues till parts warm up. Shudder never completely goes away.

16 Clutch problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/01/2002

Severe clutch shudder at start of forward movement. Affected by lower outside temps. If car sits in cold weather at first use of clutch severe shudder vibrates whole vehicle. As clutch warms up shudder lessens but never goes away. *dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***761550.

17 Clutch problem of the 2000 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 09/27/2001

No summary listed for abov evehicle.

18 Clutch problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 07/09/2001

Clutch shudders in first and second gears until engine warms up (~20mins). Vehicle has less than 17,000 miles and this has been a problem since the first day of ownership. I brought the vehicle to the dealer and was told this was normal. I find that explanation unacceptable since many others have complained with the same problem. I find this to be a safety issue since I have to rev the engine up to get the clutch to engage, potentially lurching me into traffic and causing an accident.
