4 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/22/2018

Red airbag indicator in instrument cluster begun coming on/off once or twice a week then became constant. Observed passenger airbag indicator had no lights on(no illumination at all) searched forums and found multiple similar cases with no resolve from the dealership. As a mechanic myself I began my own diagnosis, cause: removed overhead control panel and performed electrical testing on passenger airbag circuit. Found open circuits between component contacts. Correction: retinned contacts and added solder. Haven't had an airbag light since the repair. . I have heard the dealer wants 300+$ to repair. This is such a common and serious issue that it should be considered for a recall. . . I have seen and performed far more trivial recalls. That said; if you take your car to a decent Subaru or independent shop they should be able to diagnose this and fix it for alot less than the dealer.

6 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/05/2017

I weigh 115 pounds. When I sit in the front passenger seat of the 2010 Subaru Legacy, the airbag indicator light does not come on. When someone heavier sits in the seat, the airbag indicator light comes on. I worked with my Subaru dealer, who had no remedy, so they referred me to Subaru of America (800-782-2783). I opened case 1-25522457944. They tell me there is no available repair, and the passenger must "sit properly" in the seat. I am sitting properly. This was apparently an issue they knew about, as they corrected in in the 2011 legacies (we own one of those, too). I have no problems when I sit in the front passenger seat in the 2011 model. Subaru of America confirmed that if the indicator light is not lit, the bag will not deploy in an accident. So a person over 80 pounds sitting in the front passenger seat of a 2010 Subaru Legacy is not protected. It seems to me that there is a remedy, but perhaps Subaru doesn't want to go there. I want the vehicle attributes I purchased to function as designed. They say it is, but if it doesn't deploy for someone who is 115, how did they design it? is this something you can help with? we first noted this problem in 2014, took it in, Subaru could find nothing wrong. This time, we pushed harder for a resolution, so we have better information. When did this first happen date will reflect the most recent date.

7 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/20/2017

Air bag light came on while driving, turned the car off and back on and light turned off, days later same thing now is on and wont turn off, this started since the vehicle got the takata recall done at the dealer. Google the problem and there is thousands of complaints about it and seem to happen to all Subaru cars specially Legacy, and when people take car to dealer they want to charge 2,000 for the fix. I made the appointment for April 26,2017 to take the car to the dealer and hope wont be ask to pay anything or will have to find the ways to get a lawyer since seems to be a defective part from factory.

8 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2004 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/26/2016

The contact owns a 2004 Subaru Legacy. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v361000 (air bags); however, the part for the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The air bag indicator illuminated. The approximate failure mileage was 240,000. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

9 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/26/2015

Starting in fall of 2014 the passenger airbag light would go on & off intermittently; during the following winter the light rarely came on. Once warm weather hit in may of 2015 the light continually stays on. There seems to be no correlation to the passenger seat being occupied or not occupied. In light of the recent airbag recall for earlier Subaru models, Subaru may want to check into their 2009 models as there appears to be several other similar instances recorded on this site. I'm concerned about the safety issue (not knowing if the bag will deploy properly, if at all) & do not have thousands of dollars for repair costs of something that appears to be happening in other like vehicles.

10 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 06/17/2015

On June 17 airbag light went on at startup and stayed on until I arrived at work. When leaving after 9hrs the light was off at startup. Since then the light comes on at least twice a week and stays on for two or three days then goes off. I am extremely concerned about their deployment in the event of an accident. I do plan on taking the vehicle to the dealer .

11 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/03/2015

The air bag indicator lights up on the panel when I start my car engine and the indicator light stays on and never goes off while I drive. I am worried that the air bags will release unnecessarily while I'm driving.

12 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/26/2015

The airbag red light on the dashboard of our Subaru Legacy 2009 comes on intermittently. From reading personal accounts of other owners online, this appears to be a common problem with this model years 2005-2009 and has been commonly reported to be either a malfunctioning airbag control module or a faulty line or sensor in the diver's seat. Both of these result in a costly repair of approximately $2,000. Also happened to us, and another common complaint by other owners online with these models, is the passenger airbag light automatically turns on or off regardless of whether the passenger seat is occupied. Despite the abundance of personal accounts online by owners, Subaru has not acknowledged this problem and dealerships are asking owners to pay for this fix. Please note that our car for example has only 41k mies on it, and other reports also indicate this occurring with relatively low miles and vehicle age. I hope that NHTSA with investigate and I look forward to hearing back on this issue.

13 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

The passenger air bag light on the dash board goes on and off periodically on my 2009 Subaru Legacy. Some days it does not come on at all, and other days if will do it 2 or 3 times, sometimes staying on for the entire time the vehicle is turned on. It doesn't matter if a passenger is in the seat or not - although usually I don't have a passenger in the seat. This started happening at 80k miles, and I now have 100k. Subaru dealership wants to charge $100 to diagnose it, but probably a sensor that needs replaced in their opinion at a cost of $500. Appears to be a problem for other owners of make / model / year of Subaru. I think this should be a Subaru issue that is looked at by an independent party before something catastrophic happens.

14 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Suburban Subaru (14 hartford turnpike, vernon, CT) diagnosed that an air bag sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and provided case number: 1-27240483127. The failure mileage was 110,099.

15 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/04/2014

Red airbag light in dashboard goes off intermittently, regardless of whether or not there is a occupant in the passenger front seat. According to the Subaru dealership service (glendale, CA), passenger airbag censor in the passenger seat is most likely the culprit, and passenger side air bag may not go off during a collision. Others Subaru owners have reported similar issue on Legacygt. Com, forums. Nasioc. Com, Subaruoutback. Org, and Subaruforester. Org.

16 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Air bag light came on. No accident. On smooth road. It has gone off and than comes back on. Will go off for a couple of days and than stay lit for a couple of days. Independent auto shop that services Subaru's states this is common and can send it out to Subaru for service. Contacted Subaru dealer and they stated it is common. They will test and diagnosis, but may need to remove and replace. I have extended warranty that will not cover diagnosis, only failure. Subaru should replace at no charge. 2nd. Item. Took car in due to exhaust systems vibration. Was told is common problem. Dealer offered me temporary fix for 100. 00 to put screws and adhesive to correct problem. Or pay 700. 00 to remove and replace with new. I elected for the 100. 00 fix. As this was diagnosed over the phone and is common, this should be a manufacture fix.

17 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/17/2014

After the vehicle is started the air bag light stays on while driving and will sometimes turn itself off when the car is turned off with the ignition key. Then I restart the car and the air bag light goes away. This is happening once or twice a week.

18 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/17/2014

The airbag light on the dash came on while my daughter was driving this vehicle. Because the light had never come on while driving before and I had the same problem approximately two months earlier with my 2009 Subaru outback (vehicle safety complaint on file), I told her to find a safe area and stop and turn the car off and then turn it back on. After doing so she told me the light was now off. I told her to come home (she was just a few miles away) and watch to see if the light came back on again, because as I had earlier been told by a Subaru technician that when the dash "airbag" light was on that none of the vehicle's air bags would work in a collision. I took the vehicle to the dealer and told them the problem. They checked the computer codes and found the same code as in my 2009 outback (code # 26-passenger front seat system had failed) the map light/passenger seatbelt lamp assembly (part # 84621ag51a) which is located on the interior roof directly next to the rear view mirror had to be replaced. I was again told that because the air bags are a "supplemental system" they are not covered by any warranties. But seat belts being the "primary system" are covered. Since I had the same problem with my 2009 outback and the part was an in stock item and then it happened again with my 2008 Legacy, it seems a bit strange to me that Subaru does not know that they have a problem with a part that controls the airbags in their cars. "love" (pun is intended) to know when the recall will happen! I had to pay another $200 to fix a problem that will allow my vehicle's airbags to work in the event of a collision because the airbags are considered a "supplemental system" in a vehicle that is advertised as a very safe vehicle. The main reason I purchased two of them.

19 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/19/2014

Passenger side air bag light comes on and off intermittently.

20 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

My 2009 Subaru Legacy airbag module became defective at approximately 74,970 miles. While driving the vehicle, I noticed that the red airbag light suddenly came on the instrument panel indicating a problem. As this vehicle was never in an accident, and is seldom driven as I purchased another vehicle, the vehicle was brought to the Subaru dealer. I did take note that the airbag light would come on and go off. The dealer found the error code while running diagnostics on the vehicle, and contacted Subaru to determine what needed to be replaced. I was informed that the airbag module needed to be replaced. Fortunately, the airbag module was covered by an extended warranty covering the vehicle until 75,000 miles. The diagnostics, labor and deductible were not covered by the extended warranty. Is this a known failure for Subaru vehicles, or an isolated incident/module failure due to the miles on the car?.

21 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2013 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/17/2014

On 01/17/14, the air bag light came on and car was taken to Subaru dealer. Dealer verified condition and performed re-calibration of the air bag system. This cleared the air bag. On 01/21/14, the air bag light came on and the car had 10611 miles. Car was taken to dealer and tech verified and stated there was a short in the right seat frame. Seat frame was ordered and replaced. Issues solved for a few days. On 01/24/14, the air bag came on again and vehicle had 10929 miles. Car was taken to dealer and tech verified and found there was a short in the detection module and stated car was unsafe. Dealer provided a loaner while the car was in shop waiting for parts. On 02/07/14, the air bag light came on again with 12,052 miles. Dealer found right front seat buckle was not staying correctly connected to the wire harness. On 11/17/14. The air bag light came on and car was taken to dealer. Dealer stated they will contact Subaru to find out exactly why this keeps happening. Cars air bag light goes on and off.

22 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

Airbag light keeps coming on and off. I took it to the dealership in January and spent over $100 to have them tell me nothing was wrong. Now it keeps coming on and off all the time as of July 2014 until now. This is a common problem and is something that should be covered because it is a safety requirement by law likes seatbelt.

23 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/08/2013

Airbag light goes on and off. No accidents on the vehicle. This started after 70000 miles on the vehicle. Lights keeps on under extreme temperature conditions (below 32 f and above 80f).

24 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 05/07/2013

Seems to be a common problem but the red air bag light won't go off in my car. It used to be intermittent but is now staying in longer. Only had a slight accident where a lady couldn't stop in time on black ice and only chipped paint off my rear bumper (no deployed air bags though). The passenger side lights work fine. I think it's absurd that safety features this important aren't covered for the life of the vehicle. Not to mention a Subaru dealer wanting $100 just to diagnose it for a code. Wow.

25 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

Air bag light turns on. Sometimes will not be on but now is starting to be on most of the time. Multiple people having the same problem.

26 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 02/10/2013

Air bag dashboard light lights up intermittently when starting and driving. Problem has been occurring since 2013. Subaru dealer said problem is faulty soldering in the overhead console that controls airbag operation. Many internet complaints about this Subaru problem. Airbags won't work when dash airbag light is on. Subaru won't take responsibility for this safety issue. Charges $300+ to replace defective console.

27 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/31/2012

I had the dealership install a Subaru remote starter for my 2009 Subaru Legacy. About a year later I started having issues with having the air bag light come on when I started the car and stay on (with remote starter, or the normal way). Sometimes it would re-set if I turned the car off and on again. But recently it just stays on and the indicator lights on the over head display (for the passenger air bag) does not light up at all . Not sure if the remote starter was the instigator (probably not), but Subaru had said that the issue is a faulty sensor and that I would have to pay to fix it. I believe this should last the life of the car since it is a safety matter for the air bag system, this should be a recall.

28 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/13/2012

Passenger air bag sensor indicator light will intermittently show indicator as off with occupant in passenger seat (weight approx. 110 pounds). Passenger removes all weight from seat and reapplies weight in same position and/or reset procedure detailed in manual performed and sensor will usually come back on. Vehicle has visited authorized repair facility on three occasions regarding issue and first two visits repair attempt made in form of "re-zeroing weight sensor" (first attempt) and "passenger occupant detection sensor calibration procedure" (second attempt). Third visit was told by service manager that part is performing within Subaru specifications. Called soa customer service today and spoke to supervisor who said part was performing within specifications (and federal safety specs) due to authorized facility last stating as such despite still having issues. Supervisor explained sensitivity and nuances of system but was not to my satisfaction as light will be off and then come on after resuming same position after removing and reapplying weight. Told supervisor that was unsatisfactory that I would submit complaint to NHTSA and possibly write congress-person for investigation/help. Was then told issue would be escalated to senior representative who would contact me next day.

29 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Front passenger airbag sensor does not detect when a 150 pound 5 foot 1 adult is sitting in front passenger seat. Airbag light says off. Moving around in the seat makes no difference.

30 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 06/23/2011

Passenger air bag light indicating air bag is off when a 5'4'' 112 pound adult female is in the seat. The indication light will sometimes flicker from off to on but mainly remains off for the duration of the drive regardless of the speed as well as when the car is in park. This incident has occurred since the purchase of the car in June 2011 and continues to occur each time my wife is in the passenger seat.

31 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

Legacy 2010 gt - passenger seat airbag light off when passenger weighs 125 lb or less. Adult is a full size adult: 120 lb, 5'5", 37 years old woman.

32 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/20/2011

I drive a 2009 Subaru Legacy sedan. The air bag light began to turn on since about 52,000 miles. When I shut off the car, the airbag light goes away but then periodically comes on every now and then. Subaru is unable to answer as to why this is happening as a generic code is produced. I searched online forums regarding this issue and believe that there is a trend with the air bag system in the 2005-2009 Subaru Legacy's. Multiple people have complained about this problem and says it has something to do with the air bag within the seat that connections could possibly come loose or the air bag module has gone bad. Most report this happening around 45,000-60,000 miles. Some report with this, sometimes the passenger air bag automatically turns off despite a passenger occupying the seat. A vehicle's safety system should not be compromised this early or at all. I strongly believe that this should be investigated before a casualty or injury results and a recall is issued regarding the air bag system. If Subaru cannot answer to why their air bag light comes on, this raises some concern and needs to be looked into. Only forums have been helpful and some say the seat needs to be replaced, which is estimated at $1900-$2100 because the air bags are built/sewn in the seat. This should not be the customer's responsibility if its the seats or safety system of the vehicle. This is the manufacturer's responsibility to keep its consumers safe and thoroughly resolve the matter before it regrets it did not do so in result of someone being injured or a casualty results.

33 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 07/29/2010

I purchased a new 2010 Subaru Legacy. When my wife who weighs 120 lbs sits in the passenger seat the indicator light for the airbag that displays the system ?on? does not always display. It remains in the off indication. I brought it back to my dealer twice who claims there is nothing wrong with the airbag and it is designed that way. Designed to sometime go on and other times not?makes no sense. I reported to Subaru America who gave me the same story and assigned a case number . I did further research on line and appears there are other reported instances, exactly the same scenario with 2010 Legacy and 2010 outback. If federal law requires passenger airbags, why would Subaru design a car where the passenger side airbag does not always go on. They claim my wife may be too light but 120 lbs is a full grown adult. Also does not explain why it sometimes works and other times not. This is a safety issue and someone needs to look into this. It is either a latent defect or a design flaw.

34 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/31/2010

Front passenger airbag works intermittently. Purchased new 2010 Legacy from hudson Subaru jersey city in Mar 2010. Front passenger airbag light is frequently off when I am sitting in seat (5'7" & 135lbs). Is properly activated half of the time. Tried many things to get airbag to turn on including: 1. With car running, unfastening passenger seatbelt and refastening 2. With car running, opening passenger door, exiting car and getting back in 3. Exiting car, shutting car off, restarting car and getting back in 4. With car running lifting myself up and off seat and sitting back down as hard as possible. Husband took car to hudson Subaru on 11/9/10 and they recalibrated seat module and sensor. Problem persisted so he called hudson Subaru on 10/12/11. Said they have received a number of calls regarding this issue, but that there is nothing they can do. Sensor is designed to activate airbag when 90lbs of pressure is applied to seat. If a smaller person is not sitting squarely in seat, sensor may not detect persons weight and airbag will not be activated. Called Subaru on 10/12/11 and opened a case. Also emailed Subaru on 10/20. Received email reply on 10/26 requesting I bring car to dealership and meet with a field rep. On 11/1 rep indicated weight setting is not 90lbs its closer to 112lbs. Said he met with a couple in flemington having same issue and had to replace gel bladder in seat. He asked to see car and checked to be sure seatback not reclined and then asked me to sit in car. Pointed out that backs of my thighs did not touch seat and suggested my full weight was not being detected by sensor. He kept car overnight and performed different tests, but was unable to replicate problem. He emailed me a page from owners manual which detailed how someone should sit in seat and steps an owner should take if the airbag does not activate.

35 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy
