1 Engine Failure problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/16/2016

Car was kept up with timely, oil changes always taken care of. Warranty still on the car but dealership refusing to pay since car wasn't serviced there. At 90,000 miles on the four lane, out of nowhere, rod broke and I had catastrophic engine failure. The car was in motion and shut off, had to pull over on side of four lane going 55 mph when car shut off, and car refused to start again. At no time was I given any forewarning about the engine having failure. Since the dealership is no help, I still owe 9,000 on the car so I am going to have to pay for a new engine at about 4,000 dollars. . Although the warranty is still good. I've read how multiple other people are having this same exact problem around 90,000 miles. Is there no recall? no investigation? is there a defect in the engine? I think it's too "coincidental" that mine happened to go around the same time theirs did, with the same exact problem. There was also two other people in the car at the time. Thanks for your help.

2 Engine Failure problem of the 2006 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 06/24/2008

On June 24, 2008 my 06 Subaru Legacy lgt wagon suffered a serious engine failure. My oil pickup tube completely sheared off from the engine block due to a design flaw. Apparently this is a known problem with these pickup tubes for the Subaru Legacy & impreza models. I called the dealership to report my oil light was flashing, and I was told by the dealership rep "to drive it in and they will check it out". I asked again are you sure its ok to drive and was told yes. Later that day I called the dealer and asked what was going on and was told "my car would not be able to be looked at today but I could come get it and bring it in tomorrow". I again asked what was wrong and was told "they pulled a couple of cam timing codes but the car was ok to drive". Then 20 minutes later the dealer called me and said "we have to put you in a loaner car because we drove your car into the shop checked your oil level which was fine, but when we tested your oil pressure we found it to be zero so the car is not drivable, and if I did I would blow the motor". I explained to the rep again but what about me being told to drive it in here. Again was told "don't worry your car can go sometime without oil because of the new oils today & the way engines are built". Without an oil pickup tube your engine has no oil pressure, in some severe cases the only indication that there was a problem is your oil light will flash then boom you blew your engine. The dealership insists "my engine is fine and it can run without oil pressure for sometime without causing any damage". Every mechanic I talk to states your engine can not last with out oil, and it has caused harm to the engine or components of my engine. Subaru did replace the part under warranty but now I am left with a damage motor no extra added insurance. Subaru refusing to either rebuild my current motor or put a new one in. Please someone help my car is only two years old with 37000 miles on it. Sincerely, desperate.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 1997 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 12/15/2003

I have now replaced my Subaru 97 engine 5 times, and each time the new/used engine failed. Each engine had between 60 and 80,000 miles on it. In most of these cases, the engine blew a headgasket.

4 Engine Failure problem of the 1996 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/03/1999

4 incidents engine failure. First time I pushed accelator and there was no power. Continued to apply gas pedal and no power, it was as if I was not applying the gas at all. Chech engine light began to flash, car began to shake, and as soon as check engine stopped blinking and light remained on, the car ran smoothly. The second incident was exactly the same as the first. The third incident the car did the same exact thing but this time it stalled out as well. 4th time was very much like the first two. Have been to the dealer 3 times and they have absolutely no idea what the problem is.

6 Engine Failure problem of the 1996 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 01/12/1998

Engine failed , loud knocking at engine startup. Subaru replaced entire engine short-block at 18k miles. Replacement engine failed at 19k miles operation with same problem (or 37k miles on car). Subaru claims it is a piston related problem. After many complaints to Subaru, they have agreed to repair it. Currently at the dealer getting new: pistons, pins, rods and bearings as needed. This is a wide spread problem that Subaru is now telling dealers and owners "it is a normal operating noise if the noise goes away after 5 minutes of operation". It is not normal ! and in my opinion will only get worse if not repaired. I plan to sell my car after repaired.

7 Engine Failure problem of the 1997 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 05/04/1997

Defective engine valves/pistons, causing total engine failure.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 1996 Subaru Legacy

Engine failed causing noise during startup in cold weather.

9 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Subaru Legacy

Defective engine losing fluids. Smoke and fumes coming into car. Driver felt nausea at times windows were closed. Dealership wants to replace with refurbished engine block which is unacceptable. There is no confidence in the safety and reliability in this car for long term purchase. What danger could have been caused from engine failure and from the fumes inside the car? did dealership know about problem after their inspection when the car arrived on their lot?.
