36 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

I am writing to report a defect in the frame of my 2000 Toyota 4runner. The frame exhibits extensive rusting. The frame has holes and has separated along the bottom weld. The source of the worst rusting appears to be condensation from the ac unit dripping onto the frame and running along it. Toyota has declared the vehicle to be unsafe to operate, yet will do nothing to compensate for or correct the problem.

37 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

We own a 2000 Toyota 4 runner whose frame has corroded to the point that a Toyota dealer and an independent (second opinion) vehicle repair shop advised that it was and had been completely unsafe to drive. My son, who drove it 600 miles to college, was put in serious danger. We took a total loss on the car after having had it dealer serviced since buying it new in 2000. This is a safety issue according to the Toyota dealer. It is precisely the issue Toyota faced with the tacoma and tundra models, which they recalled and stood behind through repairs/replacement/dollar credits. We and the dealer contacted Toyota directly several times and the company refuses to stand behind the 4runner with the same frame corrosion problem as those models.

43 Frame And Members problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

1997 Toyota 4runner frame rotting out. There is a recall on the 1997 Toyota tacomas for the same reason, the 4runner has the same frame and has the same problem. Toyota refuses to add the 4runner to the recall or fix the defective frames. My 4runner is in excellent shape except the frame is rotting through in several locations. These 4runners should be recalled the same as the tacomas to fix the defect.

44 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/18/2010

Our 1999 4runner recently went to the dealer for an inspection, where we learned that the frame on the truck would not pass inspection because there are softball size holes in it. The truck is not safe to drive as a result. There has been a similar issue on the tundra frames, which were part of a buy back program from Toyota. We were told we could have a new frame put on, but it would cost more than the truck is worth and the truck wouldn't be the same again. Our Toyota dealer has given us a phone number (and we have a claim number) for Toyota and we have made our case with them, but no action has been taken and the dealer has basically said there is nothing further he can do.

45 Frame And Members problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

Frame on a 1997 Toyota 4runner rotting out. Vehicle no longer road worthy and will not take a sticker. Have been a Toyota man my whole life but this makes me think twice about ever purchasing another one. Is Toyota going to go good on this? funny how the tacoma was recalled but not the 4runner! same frame? I would have to guess yes. . .

46 Frame And Members problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

The sub-frame of my Toyota 4runner SUV has rusted beyond repair. The suspension box has rusted free from the frame rail. The vehicle has been rendered unsafe and cannot be driven. Toyota wants $3,000 + labor to replace the frame. This is the same sub-frame Toyota is currently replacing on their 1995 - 2010 tacoma pickup trucks at the company's expense. My sub-frame has the same type and depth of rust damage as the tacoma trucks. Toyota should be replacing these sub-frames on their SUV's as well as their tacoma trucks.

47 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

I'm the original owner of a 2000 Toyota 4 runner SUV which is the non-truck version of the tacoma which is currently being investigated by NHTSA for rust and corrosion problems. Since the 4 runner and tacoma are built the same, except one is a truck and the other a SUV, isn't there the same problem of rust and corrosion? one example is that the spare tire is located in the same place on both types of vehicles!.

55 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/07/2008

When on a long highway trip on the weekend of June 7, 2008, my husband noticed black spots on the rear window of our 2001 Toyota 4runner (121,000 miles). He cleaned it off to see if it returned as we resumed our journey. When we next stopped several hundred miles later, the black spots were on the entire rear of the vehicle. My husband checked beneath the rear of the vehicle and saw transmission fluid dripping out of the differential. We then took the vehicle to a mechanic who reported that the rear axle housing was completely corroded to the point of failure, and that it was beyond repair, and that he hadn't ever seen this on a car of this age and mileage. He informed us that Toyota has recently recalled tacoma vehicles from the same year for similar corrosion problems. We contacted Toyota and they said there was nothing they could do for us. We are left with a vehicle that is beyond repair that we are unable to sell, and we have maintained it in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. Please help. The consumer was informed the entire rear axle including the axle, differential, brakes, and exhaust system were corroded beyond repair. Updated 08/27/08.
