39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/17/2015

My 2013 Toyota Avalon wiring harness was chewed on by a rodent . It caused problems with the running of the vehicle , the traction control , the cruise control and was operating on 5 cylinders . The dealers repair shop said that a rodent eat through the wires and Toyota would not warranty this problem . The car was parked in my driveway next to another Toyota product that is a 2006 and has never been chewed . I have driven Toyota's since 1988 and have never had this to happen . I think Toyota should be responsible for the damage if they are putting any type edible product in the vehicles they produce .

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

The engine started cold and revved to 2500 rpm and then oscillated between 2500 and about 3000 rpm and never slowed down. I put the car in drive and drove it the block and a half to my house using the brake to stop at the only stop sign on the route but stopping was difficult. The next morning I experienced the same ultra-fast idle and drove the car on an errand that was about 2 miles distant. The same pattern persisted but the brakes were heating up and smelling from frequent use in keeping the car within the city speed limit. It also stressed the automatic transmission while braking aganst the fast motor. I started shifting from drive to neutral and coasting to control the speed while the engine speed oscillation continued. I parked the car back home and had a tow truck take it to marietta Toyota where the diagnosis was to replace the idle control motor at a cost of $669. 00 less a $99. 00 negotiated discount. That service solved the problem but the problem had the potential to overheat the brakes, cause one to coast in neutral without ideal control of the car in an emergency, etc.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

Purchase the 2011 Toyota Avalon on June 13, 2010 which on my first service date I complained about the steering column and harsh feeling of the car due to the steering column. Buena park Toyota kept telling me that there was nothing wrong right up to the last service that was done the end of June 2014. On June 30th went to victorville to visit my wifes sister. On July 2 2014 we started back home when the engine light and tracking light came on, fortatley the issue happened before coming down the cajhon pass on highway 15. We where only 2 miles away from the Toyota dealership in victorville and they found that the steering column was faulty and replaced column assy, steering and boldt steering lock. Plus po500 trans speed sensor poss loose connections cleaned and tightened connections at speed sennsor. The dealership stated it showes a defect on the computer showing the steering column has a defect. Why isn't there a recall concerning the above this is very dangerous problem which could take a lot of innocent lifes. Thanks j. Jones.

Leaking timing cover. Service manager at jay wolfe Toyota, mo. , say that 20% of Avalons have this leak and will cost me $2,464 to repair. 45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/18/2014

I was alone in the car and had driven into my driveway (after opening the garage door) to enter the garage. The car suddenly took off and before I knew, I had crashed into the side of the garage and went through it. The car smashed into gardening tools, snow shovels, lawn mower, leaf blower, trash cans, and flowering pots. It came to a stop partly by the coat closet wall that protrudes into the garage and partly by all the stuff that got caught under the car. The garage door railing was damaged and the door was hanging a few inches above my car. I heard things falling above me. I thought that the roof would collapse. I realized that the car was still revving and I shut it. I sat for a few minutes and then I opened the door and ran out into the house. The car, the garage, and garage contents were damaged. The airbags did not deploy. I think it was caused by unintended acceleration. I was driving at about 5 mph in the driveway and I have been doing this for the last 10 years. It appeared that the car just flew and I had no control over it.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 1999 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/17/2013

Driving my daughter to school about the 17th of December 2013, I attempted to brake the car to a stop. Instead the car lurched forward suddenly out of control and mounted the sidewalk. It travelled about 20 feet before I was able to brake it to a complete stop. There was no object or person in the path of the car and nobody was injured. This is the third such incident. The first was on June 3, 2006; the second was on 3 February 2010. All involved the car either being stopped or coming to a stop. I documented both, writing to Toyota full accounts of each incident. I have copies of these letters. Please note that the first incident occurred on June 3, 2006 long before the widely publicized death of 4 people in an accelerating Toyota vehicle.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

While driving to an appointment, I had unintended acceleration. Luckily, I was able to pull over to side of road after using two feet to slow vehicle, and shut vehicle off. After trying to restart vehicle several times, it was still revving. After a half hour, I was able to start it and bring it home. Very scary! it has happened several times since then, when my husband was driving, and we were able to pull off to safety. We took it to our mechanic, and since it was not doing it while they had it, they couldn't find what was causing the problem, and fix it. While trying to find the cause of this problem on the internet, we discovered that this was a common problem to this vehicle year, and most were on camry's. We do not have replacement floor mats, and the pedal was not stuck. We called Toyota to check on recall information. Said there were no recalls on our VIN#, and told it was out of warranty, due to the mileage, but they documented my report in their corporate records, and to take it to a Toyota dealership to have it evaluated and repaired, which would no doubt be at our expense since it was not under warranty. We are senior citizens, and are afraid to even drive this car now, much less drive it all the way to a dealer out of town.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/03/2013

After receiving a jump, I was told to drive the car for about 20 minutes to recharge the battery. After driving for about 10 minutes, the gas pedel seemed to stick. Then when driving the speed began to accelerate without pressing the gas pedel. The longer we drove the higher the engine reved. I decided to return to my home about 5 minutes away then the car brake would not stop the car at a stop light and I had to quickly turn the corner to a side street until the light changed and I was able to enter my street. I pulled the car to the side to park it and it would not stop with my foot on the brake to the floor so I quickly put it in park and turned it off. It reved a few seconds before finally turning off.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2000 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/26/2012

Driving between 10-15 mph in an open parking lot, the car suddenly accelerated (rpms between 7-8). Applied brakes to no avail. When trying to shift to park, the car accelerated in reverse. Did manage to get car in park and shut off engine. Most horrifying experience. Very fortunate and blessed no other persons, vehicle or building was in our path. Was able to restart the car and it idled normal and exhibited no other accelerations when driving. Brought car to Toyota dealer. Diagnostics performed and found no problem. Dealer contacted Toyota corp. And notified us nothing would be done unless we contacted corporate personally to report the incident. As of this date, we now have a case number assigned from corporate and the car is back at the dealer for further assessment.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/07/2012

1/7/12-12:30 am I was stopped at a red light. My foot was on the brake. Suddenly the motor began to race. I stood on the brake put the shift into park and turned off the ignition. After a short period ( about 30 seconds) I turned the ignition on and everything was normal. 1/10/12- I called the dealer and they gave me an appointment . But the earliest was at 8. 30 on 1/17/12 for which they confirmed by e-mail. On 1/12/12, (5:15 pm), my wife pulled into a parking space in a shopping area. She came to a complete stop then applied the brake and shifted into park. Suddenly, the motor raced and the car bolted forward. It jumped a 6" curb over paving stones, which were thrown about and smashed a wooden fence. A 4" steel column which backs up the fence stopped the car. Luckily no one was injured. The police were called and the auto was towed to the dealership. The damage to the vehicle is $3257. 00. Photos are available. The manufacturer claims there is nothing wrong with the car. We say after only a 5 mile road test this is not enough for a car that was driven 3,733 miles and had two incidents. My wife and I, will never drive this car again. We value our lives and that of others that could become victims of another incident.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/23/2011

I was parking my car in reverse at a speed of less than 5 miles in a designated spot adjacent to my daughter's house in quebec, canada. The engine accelerated and hit a wooden fence behind my car. I applied the brake and put it into drive to go forward and to get out of the car to see what happened. Then, the car sped at about 100 miles an hour and crashed into a metal fence of a kindergarten school across the street and hit a tree inside the kindergarten. Then again, the vehicle crashed into the brick wall of my daughter's house in reverse. A 2x2 concrete block from the brick wall that my car encountered hit my rear windshield and landed inches away from my head inside my car. I called 911 and police showed up and they towed the car and I realized it was 9:41 pm as confirmed by the time on my cellphone and luckily no children were there to get killed.

Failure Date: 08/14/2010

I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon that I purchased used from kings Toyota in July 2005. The car was Toyota certified. My car's engine died on 8/14/2010 50 miles from my mechanic. I had the car towed on 8/14/2010 and he called me to say he could put a jasper motor in my car for $6700. I called Toyota customer service and heard from them the following day that I was too late to get the engine repaired. I explained that I never received any letters from Toyota about the voluntary recall and I was told too bad. The government needs to protect its citizens from faulty Toyota engines. Oil gel or sludge caused my engine to seize. It is sitting dead at my mechanic's shop waiting for me to decide where to move it to next.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/18/2010

On the 2005 Toyota 3. 5 v-6 engine (2fzr engine), there is an oil hose that feeds the left bank (top head of the engine) this hose is bulging and cracking and my research shows that this hose has a technical service bulletin issued by Toyota, but will not be covered unless the hose ruptures during the 5 year or 60,000 miles warranty. This hose is defective and Toyota has replaced it. Since part of the lubrication hose to the left bank of the engine is metal, the portion that is rubber is the affected part only. Further research found that Lexus with similar displacement engine does not have this rubber portion of the lubrication hose. Instead, the line is all metal (as is the case in the right bank of the Avalon engine. I am requesting an investigation and requesting that Toyota issue a metal replacement hose. Numerous Avalon owners and now highlanders are being recalled to repair this defective rubber hose.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

Oil line burst resulting in all the engine oil draining out of the engine.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/06/2010

When slowing my 2006 Avalon for turn, speed bump, etc. And then accelerating there is often a lag in the transmission engaging and when it does the car lurches. I have complained many times to 2 different dealers about this since the car was new. After a year or so 1 dealer said that Toyota had issued an adjustment procedure which they performed. The problem went away for a while but has returned. In light of the recent recalls and stories about possible electronic problems with these cars I wanted to add my story to the list. I consider this a serious safety issue since the lag in transmission engagement could cause an accident when making a left turn, especially if it worsens. Further, the only way I know about this latest recall is through the news - Toyota has not notified me directly. This makes the third recall on this car - floor mats, vvt-I oil hose and now accelerator! needles to say - I am not happy with my purchase and will seriously try to convince my wife to take our business elsewhere in the future!.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/24/2009

I was running my air conditioner when suddenly it stopped working and I received a check air conditioner. I also heard a clicking under the hood. I took the car in to Toyota and the service advisor immediately new the problem, the vvt, an oil valve, ruptured and this is one of the common problems with the Avalon. I didn't know at the time, but apparently this will dump most of the oil from the vehicle. No warning lights came on to indicate that the oil pressure was low or that there was a problem with the engine. The vvt was fixed and I drove off only to return due to an unfamiliar noise under the hood. Come to find out due to the vvt valve rupture and the dumping of oil, the cam was destroyed and needs to be replaced at a cost of $ 5600. 00. Toyota is the only place this car has been serviced. If the service advisor knows the problem before the tech person looks at your car, sounds like a very all too familiar problem for there not to be a recall on this part.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon
