Started car and smoke began pouring from the exhaust while stationary. Checked oil level and found to be within normal range. When driving, car was sluggish under acceleration with intermittent smoke. Took car to san marcos Toyota and they found the engine to be sludged and require an overhaul of the engine ($4900) or replacement of the engine ($6900). The vehicle had only 140,000 miles. We ended up having an independent mechanic overhaul/cleanup the top side of engine for $4000. I have the estimates and receipts for the work if needed. I have researched on-line and found many other Avalon owners who have had the same problem. I am filing this complaint in hope that Toyota will acknowledge the poor engineering of this v6 engine and issue a recall and reimburse their customers who have experience this engine failure.

Identify whether or not electronic throttle control systems are installed on my 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2003 Toyota sienna. If electronic systems are present, are they defective? can NHTSA declare that if electronic throttle controls are present, that they are safe to operate? my 2002 Toyota Avalon also has a known defect (engine oil gel issues) which Toyota managed to avoid a recall. Will Toyota replace my engine if the engine fails due to this known defect? did the NHTSA ever issue a recall due to this defect?.

I was driving my 2006 Toyota Avalon limited when the oil line apparently let go spewing oil all over the engine causing it to smoke. All the oil drained from the engine as a result, creating an environmental hazard. The Toyota dealer that repaired the line mentioned that there was a bulletin from Toyota alerting dealers to the problem but it is not a recall. A review of edmunds and other websites shows a long list of complaints regarding this specific engine failure.
While driving ,without warning, the "v v t I oil line" burst, draining all the oil from the engine. There is loss of power with possible engine failure. At time of incident, leaves oil on road and windshields of any cars following. ( this problem has occurred on Toyota's v-6 engines since 2005. There has never been a recall. . . It only "quietly" gets repaired as you bring the car in with this problem. Toyota has changed this part 4 times with no recall. They have fixed the problem on the 2009 engines, replacing the defective rubber hose to a solid metal oil line. Toyota has known about this since 2005, and now with the gas pedal problem, want to hide the "recall" at the same time. . . . . . . . Problem is they put the same rubber part in . I paid $240. 00 to change the part to the new all-metal part the 2009 and newer v-6 engines have. Incident date and time and place:
may 21,2009 10:38 am highway I-15 . . . 48 miles west of
baker,CA . . . In the middle of desert !.

I own a Toyota Avalon 2000 with <87000; 4 weeks ago the car experienced a complete engine failure that was determined to be as a result of low oil volume most likely due to oil sludge build-up. I have regularly maintained the vehicle, and have all the receipts. The dealership has tried to avoid taking blame, but after two independent adjusted viewed the car, the dealership has put me in a loaner vehicle. I am awaiting a return call from the regional manager, but they are taking a long time to respond; they have had my car 4 weeks. I have done extensive research and found Toyota reported oil sludge problems and has covered costs of repairs. I am, however, having great difficulty getting something done with my car.

Purchased used 1996 Toyota Avalon in March 2002 with 72,000 miles. At that time I also purchased a 2 year/24000 mile extended warranty through universal underwriters. Engine failed in early December 2003 at 92000 miles due to sludge buildup in oil pan. Oil had been changed every 3,000 miles. Toyota not covering engine replacement because it is not a 97 model. Extended warranty not coving because failure caused by "fluid contamination".
