1 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/02/2020

This issue happened while the vehicle was in motion on the highway. Rear sunshade randomly deployed and is permanently stuck in the up position completely blocking rear visibility. Sunshade is supposed to go down when vehicle is placed in reverse, this function no longer works further inhibiting safe vehicle maneuvering. The rear facing backup camera has a statement saying to not rely on the backup camera when backing up, this no longer an option for me as I can no longer clearly see out of the rear window. Night time reversing is virtually impossible with any degree of safety. This appears to be a known issue with Toyota as they replaced a relay in the sunshade in model years after 2014 that seems to have remedied this issue. There is no way manually lower the sunscreen. There's no way to easily swap out the defective relay. There's no way to disconnect the sunshade from the wiring harness. There isn't an independent fuse for the sunshade that can be removed. The sunshade appears to be on a fuse that controls the headlights, taillights, braking system and cruise control system. By removing the fuse this would make my vehicle even less safe the it already is.

3 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/06/2016

The rear power sunshade, which is standard equipment on the limited model, raises on its own and won't go back down causing low visibility. There is no way to manually lower it either.

4 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/07/2016

While sitting at a stop light, I heard a tremendous, sharp noise coming from the rear of the car. I thought the car had been hit with a rock or hard ball, but nobody in the cars around me seemed to have any concern or acknowledgement of something having hit my car. Upon pulling over and opening the trunk, I realized the trunk had no counterbalance and would not pop open or stay opened once manually lifted, creating a dangerous situation in which the trunk, without being held open, will slam shut with tremendous force. I have taken the car to two separate shops and they explained that the torsion bar ripped through/out of the brackets holding it onto the trunk structure. The repairs will require welding inside the trunk--a very expensive and potentially dangerous repair. The brackets will need to be removed and replaced. Both shops expressed that this appears to have been a design flaw and that it really should not have happened if the trunk had been properly designed and manufactured with sufficiently strong parts.

5 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/07/2014

Carbon monoxide (CO) has been measured in the cabin of the car while driving, when the engine is under load. Also, the smell of engine combustion fumes is included with the CO. Toyota has determined that it is not a "repairable condition". Technical repair manuals do not list the condition, therefore no repair has been made. Toyota has not honored its warranty. I have incurred a financial loss. To date, Toyota has not provided a solution to this safety problem. A letter with details has been sent to NHTSA, dated 1/26/2016.

6 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/05/2014

The 2014 Toyota Avalon has a back up camera with a complex set of geometric colored boxes in the image on the screen that appears when the car is put in reverse gear. The owner's manual does not have an entry for the back up camera. So, what do these various colored in the back up camera screen mean? is information for this safety device required to in a reference book provided to the owner by the manufacturer?.

7 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/26/2013

The rear window sunshade comes up uncontrollably and will not go down. I was driving at night and the sunscreen came up blocking my view of cars behind me and was extremely distracting. The system malfunctions and there is no way to get the shade down. A dealer suggested that if I can craw in the back seat and manually maneuver it into the down position, I could remove the fuse and it would become inactive; thereby, keeping it in the down position. I have checked various websites and customers are removing the fuses to resolve the problem.

10 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/16/2006

I can't get any information on the possible dangers of the Smart key. The owner's manual of my 2007 Toyota Avalon warns that persons with implanted pacemakers or defibrillator should not go near the antennae on the Smart key system. My 91-year-old dad has an implanted defibrillator. Is there any way to get in, start the car, and disable the Smart key so he can then approach the car and get in? what is the radio frequency and effective radiated power of the system so I can pass the information along to his cardiologist? what is the liability if I have the car parked on a public street and someone with an implanted defibrillator or pacemaker should happen to walk past the car without knowing the danger? please help, as the dealer has not been able to find anything out about this. Also, the owner's manual warns about getting the Smart key too close to electromagnetic devices such as credit cards and cell phones, cordless phone rechargers, fluorescent lights, etc. How can my wife carry the Smart key in her purse with credit cards and cell phone? also, I store all my keys on hooks in a cabinet above the desk in our kitchen. I also store my cell phone there. On the underside of the shelf is a fluorescent light, and on the desk is a cordless phone recharger. Do I have to rearrange my life to avoid problems with the Smart key? also, the owner's manual warns the Smart key might not work near broadcast operations. Several times a week, I have to go to a cable television head end where there are 13 earth stations (satellite receive dishes) and innumerable transmit antennae on a 357-foot tower; in short, much more radio wave activity than would be present at a normal broadcast operation. I haven't taken the car there yet for fear of what might happen. Will I have to have it towed some distance away before the Smart key technology will work?.
