The consumer stated when she drove at 45 mph and moved her foot from the accelerator as if she were about to slow down, but then applied the accelerator again, the computer that would ran the drive by wire would get confused and the vehicle would begin to shift down. The vehicle would then go into neutral for a few seconds, long enough to apply the pedal. Finally, the vehicle would get the message and quickly catch up to the level of compression of the accelerator pedal. The consumer believed the problem was with the electronics. The consumer has since traded the vehicle.

A phenomenon known as "tin whiskers" within the accelerator pedal assembly and possibly other vehicle electronics may be a cause for concern. The nasa report defined "tin whiskers" as electronically conductive, crystalline structures of tin that sometimes grew from surfaces where tin; especially electroplated was used as a final finish. In a separate unintended acceleration vehicle study of a 2003 Toyota Camry conducted last fall, a nasa expert examined the accelerator pedal assembly and found two "tin whiskers" inside. He concluded that, although the vehicle operated, it was not considered to be drivable.

The pedal was too short and he was unable to reach it. The only way she was able to engage the pedal was if her foot remained elevated instead of having her heel on the floor while driving.
