Incident highway malfunction occurs – [xxx] while driving at a steady speed on the highway, my 2020 Toyota Camry unexpectedly shifted gears on its own. I did not bump the gear shifter or interact with the controls in any abnormal way. The gear shift occurred without warning or driver input, while the vehicle was in motion. A “drive start control malfunction” warning appeared on the dashboard at the time of the incident. Vehicle towed to Toyota service center – July 11 2025 following the incident, I brought the car to a Toyota dealership for diagnosis and repair. I spoke with a service advisor named rebecca, explained the situation, and clearly stated that I did not hit or touch the gear. The vehicle was kept for inspection, repair and I communicatied with Toyota. Vehicle picked up – July 16, 2025 I picked up my car from the Toyota dealership on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. I had not yet heard back from Toyota about coverage or resolution. I chose to wait for further communication regarding whether they would take responsibility for the malfunction. Toyota corporate follow-up call – July 23, 2025 on Tuesday, July 23, 2025, Toyota corporate called to inform me that the repair would not be covered, citing that the vehicle is out of warranty. What disturbed me most was that the representative claimed I had told rebecca that I might have “bumped the gear,” which is completely false. I made it clear from the beginning that I never touched the gear shifter, and that the malfunction occurred while I was driving normally. This false statement was either a miscommunication or a lie — and it minimizes the seriousness of a potential safety defect. Response to Toyota’s misrepresentation – July 23, 2025 during the call, I told Toyota that misrepresenting my account was unacceptable and dangerous. This vehicle, and models with the same throttle body and air filter/air duct assembly have an issue. Where plastic parts from the vacuum box attached to the air duct come loose and get stuck in the throttle body. Causing the engine to rev up then die. I have dealt with this same issue twice in the last three weeks. Thank you for your time.

Uncontrollable sudden acceleration 3 times while I drove the car, it suddenly and rapidly accelerated. Eventually, the car crashed and was totaled. The first time was 3/31/25 when my wife and I went to the car wash. To exit the car wash, I put the car in drive and lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. I immediately braked and the car went back to normal. Over 3 years nothing like this happened before. The 2nd time was only 8 days later. On 4/8/25, I was driving the car at moderate speed in the center lane of a large street and while changing from the middle lane to the right lane to prepare to turn right at the next street, the car started accelerating rapidly and to make a loud noise. Fortunately, I was able to brake and the car went back to normal. We went to the Toyota dealer the next day 4/9/25 and told our concerns to the service advisor and the shop foreman. They checked the car, including with a computer. The foreman and I both drove the car. He said they did not find any mechanical/electronic issues and the only explanation is that if I hit the cruise control (which I never use), as he saw my hand close to that button while I drove. He said to avoid the cruise control and it will be ok. They did not charge us for the visit. The third time was on 6/15/25 when we again went to the car wash. I was very careful as this was the same location as our first time. Just like before, I lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. However, the acceleration was much more rapid than before and I was not able to brake in time and the car crashed into the pole of the car wash about 45 feet away. The airbags deployed and the car was totaled. We were pulled from the wreckage and ended in the emergency room. Luckily no one was seriously injured. I am filing this complaint regarding a known and documented issue affecting my 2012 Toyota Camry (VIN: [xxx] ), which has developed a transmission shudder and vibration between 20–50 mph. This problem is directly aligned with Toyota technical service bulletin t-sb-0079-15 and customer support program zf4, both of which describe issues with the torque converter and ecm software. My vehicle has 116,670 miles, which falls within the mileage eligibility of the support program (zf4: 150,000 miles), though it is just outside the time limitation (8 years). I reached out to Toyota (case #: [xxx]) to request goodwill assistance due to the safety-related nature of the defect and the fact that it is a well-documented product flaw, but they declined support solely based on time — not on mileage or vehicle condition. The vibration affects the transmission and drivability, particularly during city and highway acceleration, creating potential hazards when merging or navigating traffic. I believe this qualifies as a design flaw with potential safety implications. I respectfully request that NHTSA review Toyota’s handling of this issue and determine whether further consumer protection or a recall is warranted, especially for owners who were not adequately notified or who fall just outside the support window despite clear symptoms. I understand this is related to oil consumption problem that Toyota has failed to address in the 2014 model. What can be done? this is criminal!.

The car accelerated uncontrollably for no apparent reason. I was pulling into a parking slot, preparing to put the car in park and stop the car. All of a sudden the car accelerated and slammed into a building.

Sudden unintended acceleration. Pulling slowly into a parking spot and the car unexpectedly accelerated and crashed into another car which, in turn, crashed into a third vehicle.

While operating my vehicle, the multi information display between the tachometer and rpm gauges flashed bold red letters brake (even though nothing was in front of us at all) then the screen went 100% black. When that happens, the majority of the safety features are obsolete because you cannot see or read what caused the beep. Also, the odometer could not be seen as well as feul eveonomy, if cruise control was engaged, what gear your engine is in if sports mode is activated (in which occurs if accidently hitting the gear switches on your steering wheel just turning it), unable to see maintenance messages, cannot control the sensor settings. . . Nothing. When I finally had enough money to even get the car diagnosed (roughly $187), the corwin Toyota dealership asked me for the mileage, and I had to tell them to tell me. They did confirm the instrument panel/cluster to be defective, however, I and my extended warranty company had to pay the bill. 53,252 miles when they serviced it. When I paid my portion, I asked lori how long will this one last and she told me, "they are suppose to last the duration of the car's life. " I replied, "um, but. . . ". On April 17th I called Toyota's customer engagement line and spoke with them about the defective part and repair. Dorian told me that with the part replaced carries a 1 year warranty. If Toyota designed essentially all the safety features, eco features, cruise control, gears to only be seen or controlled on that multi-informational display within the instrument panel/cluster, they should be required to fix it at no cost to customers for the lifetime of the car. I took video of it before I dropped it off to be serviced. , but even corwin Toyota in fargo, nd, has video footage of the mechanic's assessment.

Brakes under constant pressure took longer to engage. One minute later while pulling into parking stall the brake pedal went to floor and one pump immediately after it engaged. Simultaneously, the car accelerated and jumped a curb and one foot into the landscape. Had the acceleration continued and/or the brakes not engaged the vehicle would have hit a tree in another 3'. This tree was about 18"-24" diameter. One hour later cautiously drove to Toyota dealer who performed inspection of brake system, test drove, and scanned the computer system. They found no abnormal codes for the time of the incidents. They could not replicate the issues. There were no warning indicators noticed during the incident. Scan data and incident report sent to Toyota field agents confirmed the described problem was not found in the system.

1. 9/7/2024, emergency braking activated at 65 mph while merging onto interstate. No cars immediately in front of me. Stopped dead in travel route for about 2 minutes then restarted. (route 42 and 95 north) 2. Resulted in a near miss to several rear end collisions. 3. Will take to dealer 9/9/2024. 4. No warning or prior phantom braking.

Problem: unintended acceleration, air conditioner operating. Incident scenario: approaching driveway, stopped to allow pedestrian to pass. Resumed low speed turn into driveway, abrupt acceleration of vehicle, launching vehicle over granite curb and into nearby tree. Damage: passenger r. Front fender, passenger headlamp assy;lower control arm assy, front bumper cover, passenger wheel rim bent, tire deflated. Unintended vehicle acceleration is a serious safety defect and can occur when the idle air control valve is defective or is provided incorrect engine rpm signal from engine control computer causing sudden vehicle acceleration.

The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph when suddenly the vehicle began accelerating without warning lights. The contact attempted the press the brakes however the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into an inbacment hitting the driver side of the vehicle into a nearby church building. Driving very slowly into my 36 foot deep garage I took my right foot off the accelerator pedal when the 2021 Toyota Camry suddenly unintended accelerated forward 15 feet and crashed through the rear garage wall, the automatic brake didn't work,. Then with my foot on the brake pedal, it continued at high speed across 35 feet of concrete patio and came to rest on top of thick hedge with front wheels spinning off the ground. I then shut the engines off. I believe this accident was caused by 'sudden unintended acceleration", a fault in many Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

The contact's fiancé owns a 2012 Toyota Camry. While the contact's fiancé was driving 55 mph with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle shuddered and decelerated from 55 mph down to 20 mph. The contact stated that the check engine and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 240,000.

The vacuum brake pump assembly malfunctioned and I had the vehicle taken to the dealer that did the original recall for the vacuum brake pump assembly and they inspected the vehicle and told me that was the issue along with the nipple inside the pump had broken off and fell down into the engine and had damaged the cam shaft. Exactly what the recall states. Yes the vehicle can and has been inspected its at the dealer still and has been since 06/12/2024 when this occurred. The safety of my wife and daughter and any other people in any vehicle in front of mine due to the brakes got extremely hard to push and the vehicle would not stop properly. Almost plowed into a Jeep wrangler that was in front of her when trying to pull into the grocery store. Yes the dealer butler Toyota the service manager thomas is the person I have been directly dealing with and he has tryed to contact Toyota to get an answer and they wont give an answer. He has even contacted his southwest Toyota service contact and they have tryed to get some info for me but no answers. The vehicle has been inspected by the service manager and a technician from butler Toyota and thats where all my service and the recall was done. There was no warning or messages before this but when the pump went out and the brakes would not stop the car there is a message in the info center now that this occurred. My wife and daughter was on there way home from dance and was stopping by the grocery store when she went to stop she couldnt almost rammed the back of a Jeep in front of her. She pulled into the parking lot turned the car off and called me. When I arrived about 15 minutes later there was I thought brake fluid all under the car. I then had another person ask if I needed help and I asked him would he help me push the car just about a foot or so backwards to see what was leaking. When I put my finger in it it was motor oil. I immediately told my wife that it was not drivable and took the vehicle to butler Toyota.

When leaving from a stop as I accelerate between 20-30 mph it hesitates and will not go. I have to take my foot off and put it back on to go.

Occasionally engine revs up while braking. The most incident was when braking for a stop sign. I took my foot off the accelerator and depressed the brake pedal. The engine speed increased and I had to step harder on the brake. Briefly a message appeared warning the brake and accelerator pedals were both depressed. I looked down and I could see nothing was touching the accelerator peddle. My foot was clearly only on the brake. This has also happened when trying to park, though I did not look at the gas pedal those times. Instead I shifted to neutral an turned of the engine. I have reported this to the dealer several times with no resolution. With the latest report the service manager was "not available" and has not returned phone calls. They claim to have never heard of the problem. By the way, there are no extra mats in the car. The only mat is the one installed by the manufacturer and it is secured by clips.

Car in reverse and going forward when foot on gas the car will take off at a high speed. Need to hit brakes quick to stop the car. Could cause an accident if other cars are around or pedestrians walking. I nearly hit a building.

On April 11 at about 8:06 a. M. , upon returning from exercising at the peter blum ymca in boca raton, I was very slowly parking my car in the garage. The car was half way in when it suddenly accelerated forwards, impacting two bicycles standing on their racks at the end of the garage, the washing machine, the dryer, the water heater and through them, the garage back wall, where cracks were created. I applied the brakes as hard as I could but the car just kept going. It finally stopped, after hitting the bicycles and the appliances. Astonished by what was happening, I put the car in park and then very carefully, I went backwards to review the damage. All of a sudden, the car accelerated backwards until it hit some bushes across the street from my house. It is a street with foot traffic by neighbors holding their small kids and dogs. Cars are usually parked on the side walk. Miraculously, nobody was injured and no car was parked. I authorized inspection by Toyota. My insurance company geico only inspected body damages to the car. There were no warnings.

The instrument panel goes black while driving in daylight. Seems to be a non issue at night. You can not tell what speed you are traveling, if the car is running hot or how much gas is in the tank. Appears to be a major problem by searching for solutions. Many solutions have already been tried but seems to not fix the issue. Could be dangerous not knowing how fast / slow you are traveling. If you search this issue on Toyotanation. Com, you will see many owners have this same issue. I just purchased this car so do not know how long it has been an issue. Previous owner did not disclose this issue to me. I reached out to him but he has not contacted me back. I did buy it as is so there's that.

On March 13th, 2024, while pulling into the driveway and lightly accelerating due to the slight incline of the driveway, the accelerator pedal fell from under my foot. The car accelerated hard, plowing through the garage door, a washer/dryer unit, a storage rack and into the back wall of the garage. The car bounced back but was still accelerating, leaving marks from the tire spinning in the garage. The brakes were ineffective in stopping the vehicle. After hitting the wall I was able to shut the car off using the key. The airbags did not deploy. Note: the car has molded oem floormats that were secure at the time of the accident. The vehicle was towed to a body shop and the insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss.

Intermittent eps warning light illuminates during highway driving with steering wheel lock-up subsequently followed by a reset of certain electrically powered items associated with but not necessarily limited to the following systems: 1. Stability control system warning indication 2. Tpms light 3. Radio power cycles 4. Check engine light. After turning the car off and then back on again these issues clear initially, but will intermittently happen at random durations of time anywhere from an additional 1 to 3 hours of driving. I've been discussing with Toyota customer service, who has known issues with the 2015 Toyota Camry under NHTSA campaign 15v144000, but they are trying to tell me that it only applies to v6 and hybrid 2015 Camry's. I feel that this is also applicable to my vehicle VIN: 4t1bf1fk5fu084707. I feel Toyota is refusing to acknowledge this critical safety issue affecting more 2015 Toyota Camry vehicles. I've never had an issue like this with 5 other previously owned vehicles. When asked if I could pay for the fix myself they informed me that it is not possible without a recall! my Toyota dealer is refusing to fix the issue and Toyota customer service hasn't responded in over 3 weeks to my inquiry.

I was on the highway during traffic hour going approximately 40 mph at 2 rpm and when I tried to accelerate to keep up with the flow of traffic, the car did not accelerate and actually slowed down and suddenly shifted down below 1 rpm which caused the oncoming cars behind me to hit their brakes hard. After it slowed down and did not accelerate, even though I pressed the gas pedal further, it suddenly shifted to 3. 5 rpm and bolted forward towards the vehicle slowing down in front of me causing me to slam the brakes. It felt as if there was a disconnect between the transmission and the engine. Nothing popped up on the dashboard. This continued twice more before I pulled over and restarted the car to see if would help and it sort of did for about 10 miles before occurring once more before I reached my destination, so I pulled over and checked it on my om126p and it showed no faults in the system. I then took it to the mechanic the next day and the car was fine the mechanic cleared the vehicle and said it was probably due to a clogged fuel filter and I have an appointment with them in hopes of fixing this problem. Now I’ve read into the problem and it seems to be a recurring problem and there’s been countless situations like mine in which the safety of both I and others on the road have been put at great risk. Please look into the problem on the off chance it isn’t a problem with filters. Please look after the safety of everybody on the road. Thank you.

I was driving my car when suddenly the speedometer started going from 0-60 back and forth, the rpms was all over the place, the brake light came on and stayed on and the lights was going from bright to dim, there was a couple more lights aluminized on my dash. After googling the problem that nearly caused me and my children to crash, there is so many people affected by this same problem in the 2007 Toyota Camry. Why hasn't this been recalled or class auctioned. Also my dash board is sticky like tar.

The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph there would be a loud noise emitting from the rear-end of the vehicle that seemed as if the vehicle was running rough. The contact stated that while being idle at a red light the vehicle suddenly surged forward crashing into the vehicle in front. The air bags in the front and rear of the vehicle deployed on both the driver and passenger side. The vehicle was towed and deemed totaled. A police report was made. The contact received an injury to their stomach, knee, and hip bone. A passenger in the vehicle received neck and back injuries. Medical attention was needed. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,900.

The contact owned a 2023 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while stopped at the red traffic light with her disabled daughter sitting in the rear driver's side seat, the vehicle lurched forward abruptly and hit the rear of another occupied vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle was damaged. The front driver's side and front passenger's side air bags, and unknown rear air bags exploded while deploying. Additionally, there was smoke coming from the steering wheel and the steering wheel was significantly hot. The contact stated that both her and her disabled daughter were unable to exit the vehicle because the air bags were obstructing. A bystander assisted the contact and her daughter out of the vehicle. The contact sustained soreness on the neck and the buttocks, and a swollen left knee and left ankle. The contact's daughter sustained a laceration on the neck and neck pain. Both the contact and her daughter received medical assistance. The contact was unsure whether the other driver sustained any injuries. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. A police report was filed. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and extended to the floor while depressed. Additionally, the engine started to rev before the vehicle momentarily experienced unintended acceleration. The contact stated that the failure occurred for approximately 25 seconds before the brake pedal and engine operated normally. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 6,000.

We (my wife and I) were driving our vehicle Sunday November 5th 2023 in the morning and experienced a serious issue. While on the highway, the car was stuck with the gas petal in the down position (we did not realize this until after we were able to successfully power down the car) and continued to accelerate in an uncontrolled manner. We were fortunate that our breaks were able to stop the car, and we navigated it to the shoulder of the highway. We then put the car in park, all while the engine was full throttled. We powered down the car and removed the keys. We waited a few moments and tried to power the car again - the engine however remained full throttled. We turned the vehicle off once again and then realized the gas petal was stuck in the down position. We were able to manually get the petal unstuck at this time. We have not driven the vehicle since this incident and consider it too dangerous to do so. Since this incident, we have looked up any potential recalls for this issue and have not found any. To answer the questions above: the gas petal/acceleration malfunctioned. The safety of everyone in the vehicle and other drivers on the road were at significant risk. The vehicle has not been driven since, and the issue has not been reproduced. No recalls were found for this VIN. The vehicle has not been inspected since the incident, but otherwise has passed inspection in our state. There were no warning lamps or messages on the vehicle before or after the incident. We believe the manufacturer is responsible for addressing the issue, even though there is not a recall for this particular problem. This is a known issue by the manufacturer, as they have released many recalls for similar models/years and have even created a video on youtube to instruct drivers how to address this issue, if it happens, while driving.
