1 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/15/2018

I have continuously had issues with my cars ignition coils and vsc system. The check engine light and vsc system light is always on and even though I've spent thousands of od dollars on repairs the light continues to pop up even with regular maintenance and multiple repairs. My car misfires and turns off randomly this is very dangerous to drive but I have no other means of transportation. The car misfires in idle, while driving at low and high speeds and it wont turn on sometimes until I connect jumper cables to the battery. When I connect the jumper cables I never need an extra source of power I simply connect one end of the cables to the battery and a few seconds later it all the lights turn on again and the car restarts the whole system.

3 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2003 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/07/2015

I felt a click under hood around area of driver side as I backed out out of a parking space at the bank. I drove forward across the street into another parking lot, turned my wheel right to pull into parking place and the accelerator increased sending me up a curb into a brick wall. With foot on brake, I had to put car into neutral and park to turn off before acceleration stopped. My entire front end was smashed(have photos of car and tire marks on cement). I started car back up and it reversed fine. No mats under pedal and no slipping foot to gas pedal. Car has 60,000 miles and was impeccable.

4 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

When you are at a full stop or at a red light, or stop and go traffic. When you start to mash the gas pedal down the car does not move. Everyone is moving beside you and behind you and you are lucky if you don't get rear ended. So far we have been lucky. When you keep trying it will finally go. It will jerk you head back sometimes. So I thought it might be the cable on the speed control going bad. Sticking or whatever. I am not a specilist on saying what it my be. But it does need to be repaired.

5 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2011 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/16/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Camry. The contact was attempting to park in a parking garage at approximately 5 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The front end of the vehicle jumped as the contact attempted to brake but the vehicle would not respond. The contact was unable to stop the abnormal acceleration and crashed into a concrete wall. The contact shifted into park and turned the vehicle off, yet the engine rpms continued to idle extremely high. The contact sustained injuries to the shoulder and neck. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a paint & auto body shop and the manufacturer sent an engineer to inspect the black box. The engineer advised that the vehicle was traveling at 45 mph when it crashed into the concrete wall. The engineer determined that the brake was not applied when the failure occurred and that the incident was caused by driver error and not a manufacturing defect. The auto body shop replaced the front end bumper, steering cable and the radiator. The failure mileage was 8,000 and the current mileage was 9,900. Updated 03/27/lj updated 06/25/12.

7 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2011 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/06/2011

At low speed (15-39 mph), the transmission shift roughly. The car was either pulled back (1) by the engine or jumped (2,while my foot on the break pedal) during the down shift. The pulling back (1) gives the same effect as using engine breaking in the manual transmission. Based on the signs that I have seen on interstates, state laws (in some states) prohibit driver to use engine breaking. The jumping (2) was very bad. The car needed approximately 3-10 feet more to stop due to the unpredicable jumping behavior. Well 3-10 feet does not seem to be a lot but let say if you are 1 foot away from running over a living thing. . . . . . . . . . This problem have happened since I bought the car new and they still be a serious problem. I have been driven about 10-20 cars (including rentals) but I have never experienced the jumping (2, while my foot on the break pedal) until I bought this Camry. After reading the reviews online, this seems to be a common problem for this model. This problem needs immediate attentions.

8 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 06/03/2011

Another Toyota accelerator problem I was a great believer in Toyota’s reliability reputation until 6/3/2011 when my wife called from the side of a road to say that the gas pedal didn’t work. Luckily, before she had pulled out into the traffic lane the oncoming car had already stopped to turn into the road she was leaving; otherwise she would have been t-boned. Shop diagnostics indicated failure of the accelerator pedal position sensor (apps). The car is a 2004 v-6 Camry with 140,000 miles on it. When contacted about the problem, Toyota headquarters in California denied culpability. The apps is an electronic gadget which replaces the old cable/pulley gas pedal linkage between the gas pedal and the fuel injectors or carburetor(s). Its purpose is to improve emissions control. There is no diagnostic procedure to test its remaining life. The old cable/pulley system could be checked visually and by touch and be replaced rather cheaply if need be. Apps failure results in the engine immediately reverting to idle speed. If it fails in heavy traffic at high speed, there will be an instantaneous loss of speed and power. The person behind you will have no warning and you will probably be rear-ended. If it fails during acceleration to cross traffic or merge into traffic you will probably be hit from the side. Clearly the apps trades off vehicle safety for improved emissions control. If the old cable/pulley were still in place as a fail-safe measure, then apps failure would not present a safety hazard. However, it would still cost you about $600 to replace. When hydraulic brakes were introduced the cable/pulley system for the emergency brake was wisely retained as a fail-safe measure. Duh.

11 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 04/12/2010

I own a 1998 Toyota Camry le. The accelerator had been sticking for the past three years all the times and progressively getting worst. I have to step onto the pedal hard very often from a full stop to un-stick the pedal on a routine basis. About two years ago, the cruise control race up and down, then not responsive for a brief period of time. Since the accelerator is a cable system, I have try to lubricate the cable link many times using different lubricant, but nothing work. Therefore, I am driving around with a sticking accelerator, and cannot be sure if it relates to the possible electronic problems. Once in a while the engine race up an down when the car is in idle. The failure is continuous. The mileage on this car is now about 157,000 miles.

12 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

My 2004 Toyota Camry le had rapidly accelerated on its own shortly after placing gear selector in park. I was slowly backing up my Camry le on an incline. I had my left foot on the brake and lightly touched the gas pedal with my right foot. (n. B. I used both feet, because on two occasions while backing up with my body turned, my right foot twisted and got caught between the accelerator and brake pedals--which are the same height. ) I barely got a few feet before I heard an odd noise--a sound that I can neither remember or describe --since I have no frame of reference for this sound. I believe the car was vibrating when this sound occurred. I put my right foot on the brake and moved the gear selector to the park position. Within about 3 seconds the engine raced so high--as if the car was traveling 120 miles +. I have never heard an engine accelerate as rapidly and as high as this. It was as if rocket fuel was suddenly added to the fuel line. If this vehicle was in drive, I would have been unable to stop. My relative is proficient in both computers and cars. He suggested that there could be several reasons for this problem including corrosion on computer parts, ic chips not seated properly, problems with the wiring harness, and the last suggestion, that the ecm (car computer) gave the wrong command to open up the throttle body, which caused the engine to race. After I turned the engine off and back on, the car worked normal--my relative said that the ecm could have reset itself. Even if Toyota could claim that the problem is in the gas pedal, its important to know that there is a sensor by gas pedal (wires attached) which I understand would tell the ecm where its [pedal] position is. Since there is no mechanical linkage (cable) that connects to the throttle body--the accelerator would have to be controlled electronically. Updated 03/30/10.

13 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

My brake continues to stick when I press on it.

15 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/14/2008

About two years ago (2008), when starting off from say a stop light, I would press the gas pedal & nothing would happen for a second or two, then the car would jerk ahead. This did not happen all the time. This problem occurred over a six month period or so. A mechanic (not Toyota) told me the housing for the accelerator cable was corroded and needed to be replaced. This he did and I have had no problem since. Cost was about $200.

16 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

The contact owns 2002 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated while driving 35 mph when he tried to stop the vehicle it continued to accelerate into an intersection. The vehicle eventually stopped on it's own. The Camry is a 6 cylinder vehicle and the mechanic who looked at the vehicle stated that the 4 cylinder had a gas cable and a 6 cylinder has electronics. The mechanic thought the problem was caused by the electronics. The contact also hit a wire when the vehicle accelerated which prevented him from making the right turn. The failure mileage was 52000. The current mileage was 56759. Updated 04/01/10 updated 07/14/10.

17 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 04/15/2007

My 2007 Camry on several occasions during the first few months of operation in April and may 2007 surged or lunged without cause. There were no injuries and no repair, no incidents occurred in the past two years. One incident occurred when starting up from a stop sign beside school children waiting at a bus stop. Another incident occurred when I slowly maneuvered to park in a tight space between two cars. Both driving instances required fine control and very little gas. Both instances occurred on cold mornings, a short distance and a short time after starting to drive in the morning. The car unexpectedly revved loudly and lunged forward, I braked hard, then it sort of stalled became unresponsive and lagged before returning to normal control. These incidents were scary, could have caused personal or property injury and occurred without any known cause. The car seemed confused. The other predominant driver of the car had similar experiences. My car is subject to recalls. I have removed the floor mat but not taken it for the accelerator pedal repair. I believe the problem is a computer glitch and not the floor mat or the gas pedal. I received a floor mat recall notice early in ownership, on my first maintenance visit to Toyota I was told that my floor mat was not the defective one. Subsequent letters have said to remove the mat and stated that no repair is ready, they will contact me. I tried to call the dealer two weeks ago to ask about a repair after news reports and further recalls. My call was placed on hold for so long, I hung up and haven't called back. I think my car has a potential dangerous problem but I do not believe that Toyota is cable or will address that problem at this time. My VIN number does not indicate my car is eliminated from the recall.

18 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

19 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1996 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 04/13/2006

The contact owned a 1996 Toyota Camry. While traveling at speeds of 40 mph depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle would not stop and proceeded to abnormally accelerate. She was able to finally stop the vehicle and upon further inspection, observed that the accelerator pedal had collapsed in the open throttle position. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who released the wedged accelerator cable. On a separate occasion, while depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle abnormally accelerated a second time. She was able to bring the vehicle to a stop and drive onto the emergency lane without incident. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where repairs were made for the previous failure. The contact experienced the unintended acceleration failure one additional time while traveling in snowy weather conditions. The contact stated that she did not feel safe in the vehicle and had a relative follow her home in case of additional failures. 20 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/17/2006

I purchased a used 2000 Toyota Camry from a friend 2 yrs. Ago. My friend, original owner, had problems with the car accelerating on its own & even went as far as to buy a new accelerator cable assy. On the recommendation of the Toyota dealer 3/17/06. They said that would fix the problem. I have also had the same problem since I have owned the car. Since the publicity about this problem neither my friend nor I have put the cable assy. On for fear of more problems. Toyota doesn't seem to know how to fix the problem. I still have the accelerator cable assy. In the original sealed bag & I still have the problem.

21 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/11/2005

The contact states she received a carfax report that stated the following could happen. "the front frame assembly has not been adequately welded. Fuel throttle linkage and control; the accelerator cable housing could be deformed at the cruise control at the actuator to the throttle body. The inner accelerator inner cable could veer away and eventually break this could allow the throttle to return to the idle or remain in its most recent position regardless of accelerator pedal operation increasing the risk of a crash. " none of these symptoms apply to her vehicle at this time.

22 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2006 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

Throttle lag at low speed and from stop is inconsistent and has been the cause for several close calls when pulling into traffic. Manufacturer was informed; dealer investigated; states this is normal and nothing can be done, that lag is "acceptable". Some instances have been several seconds before actual throttle response. Driver has to use harder acceleration to compensate when this happens. This is a safety issue that Toyota is aware of but declines to admit it is a problem. Driver is very concerned that this issue will be cause of an accident.

23 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2005 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 06/22/2005

I own a 2005 Toyota Camry xle v6, purchased from koons tysons Toyota, va in August 2004. While driving home the car gave me a feeling of an imminent stall as I would press the gas pedal from a dead stop, after coasting and upon trying to accelerate to change lanes. I had an occasion to go back to the dealer to pick up some accessories that I was missing initially. I brought my driving experience to the attention of the salesperson who in turn asked a service technician. The explanation I was given was that this year model car does not have a linkage cable but a sensor at the gas pedal; upon depressing the pedal, it sends a signal to the computer and the computer does all the rest, hence the hesitation is normal. The driving experience has been the same for my wife and son. They are scared to drive this car! in January 2005 the car was at laurel Toyota in laurel, MD for oil service and I mentioned my concern to the service advisor who in turn got me a similar explanation as stated above from his technician. I subsequently called Toyota national customer relations who told me that someone will call me from koons tysons Toyota and they gave me case #. I had a call from mr. A representative from the dealership and he asked me to bring the car in today at 10 a. M. To be seen by his technician. The car was test driven by mr. Melvin beavers who agreed with me that there is hesitation as you press the gas pedal and he offered that other owners of the same year model car have complained of this problem as well. His explanation however was the same regarding the redesign that eliminated the accelerator linkage cable and that the behavior is typical and normal for this years model? this is dangerous and unacceptable behavior of the car in case of a lane change or any other sudden acceleration siituation! I would like Toyota motor sales, USA to address and remedy this extremely dangerous design flaw.

Consumers 23 year old daughter was involved in an incident along with her friend. Where they were attempting to take an exit, when the vehicle would not allow her to slow down. Vehicle accelerated on its own, causing them a life threatening experience. The two ran of of the road in order to block from hitting 0ther vehicles, and in order to not hit a tree when they ran of the road, they had gotten back onto the road after the passenger had informed the driver that the road was clear enough to get back on. They did so, luckily not hitting anyone, they ended up in a vacant parking lot where the driver had taking the keys out of the ignition. During the accident the driver tried to brake and even pull the emergency brake and the vehicle rejected that. Vehicle was towed back to the service center, where three weeks prior, the consumer had an oil change, lubrications, and the tires rotated. They tested the vehicle, and reported that they found nothing. The service center suggested that they could clean the throttle linkage and lubricate a specific cable (name not available). Vehicle was then inspected at a Toyota dealer who did not see a problem either and even allowed one of the employees to take the vehicle home for further inspection and he found no problem as well. Consumer stated that the dealer had been able to clear the airbag sign that was displayed on the dashboard.
