It's a dangerous thing. The first time it happened to me was on Jun 15, 2021, only the light came on and when I turned off the car the light went off after a month it came on again and turned off by itself, and now it turned on and it doesn't turn off for nothing. And it only says the pre-collision system & cruise control malfunction alert. I was doing a little research online and I realized that many people have this problem regardless of the vehicle miles and this is dangerous since this happens on local streets or highways regardless of the speed of the vehicle. Please investigate. Thank you.

I was exciting a freeway. As I usually do, I disengaged the clutch expecting the cruise control to also disengage and coast to the stop sign with the assistance of my brake. Instead, as soon as I disengaged the clutch, the car accelerated as if someone had put their foot all the way to the floor. The brake had no impact to slow the acceleration. I turned the key off, hoping that would help - but the momentum carried me forward at a great speed. I managed to Dodge some cars and headed (and landed) in a ditch across from the stop at the end of the exit. . The only possible warning that something like this might happen is that I had experienced some trouble with the cruise control going off completely - and having to re-set while driving. I had no experience with acceleration problems.

Bought with 22k miles about 1 1/2 years ago. The cruise control speed and the speedometer issues have always been present. When using cruise control (under 45 suburban and urban streets) the car sometimes cannot regulate on slight inclines and speeds up by up to 5 mph over setting and doesn't decelerate. Several times it's done it on flat roads. It's never done this on the freeway even coming up slopes. It's rare that my digital speed reading is the same as my set cruise control speed. My digital speed reading also usually differs from my speedometer by about 2-4 mph also, sometime last summer an issue with my brakes has been occurring and is becoming more frequent. When first starting my car (I notice it on damp or dewy mornings) I can hear my brakes as I'm backing down my slightly sloped, cement driveway. I put my car in reverse and barely tap the gas because I go very slowly because we have a short driveway (35-40ft total) and a little lip at the entrance where the driveway meets our culdesac. It's not every morning and I've never noticed it any other times. Sounds like when brake pads are wearing down and feels almost spongy when pressing brake pedal. No squealing or chirping. Ive had my brakes checked twice and they're in good shape. *current mileage is approx 42k.

When in cruise control on the freeway I have noticed that when a car passes you when it changes lanes in front of you it decreases the speed from 68 mph to an abrupt 57 mph even when I have 6 to 7 car lengths between the car in front of me, when this occurs. I stopped using the cruise control feature because this could cause an accident if a car behind me was following to close and would crash into my rear of my vehicle.

Transmission: when accelerating hard, such as on an on ramp, my speed only increases slightly while the engine revs to 5000+ rpms. I let off the gas & then it shifts and speeds up. The 8 speed automatic transmission will not shift on hard acceleration until I let off the gas pedal. This is consistent and I believe, a safety hazard. Cruise control: this system has what Toyota calls a safety feature that automatically slows the car if it thinks the vehicle or object ahead is too close. In reality it slows the car dramatically without anything in front of me and a clean windshield. It has a windshield camera to detect such things, so I have to keep it clean. This is a recurring thing. I have notified Toyota. There should be a required fix for such safety problems.

This vehicle gave me problems from the beginning. To begin, it began breaking me in the middle of the road going about 45-50 mph. This continued to happen and my Toyota dealer told me that I was a liar. I continued to drive the car, unknowing when it would stop me in the middle of traffic again. It then had electrical problems because the dashboard and radio would go black while I was driving; my air conditioner would stop as well. Also, I was driving on an interstate alone with my cruise control on and it kept breaking me and telling me that there was another car in front of me. This continued for about 30 minutes of constant driving (picture below). The last thing that happened to me in this car was that the lane assist would pull me out of my lane and into another when trying to correct between lines. This happened a few times and Toyota would do nothing about it. My mother was driving my car one day about 75 mph on an interstate and it pulled her off the road to the left. This car gave me nothing but trouble since purchasing it brand new. My car started this trouble within 5 months of me owning the vehicle and Toyota provided no assistance. I was very upset and disappointed that I chose this car above others. I hope Toyota will do their job and fix these problems so another Camry driver may not experience what I, unfortunately, had to.
Exited freeway and hit brakes to slow and stop at traffic light. The motor accelerated, the brakes were too weak to stop the vehical, and I crashed into the stopped car at the traffiic light. It seemed that the cruise control did not turn off when I pressed the brake pedal. They failed to turn the cruise control off.

Excessive oil consumption. Takes about 1-2 quarts every 1000 miles, otherwise I run out of oil and it starts to smell like oil when I drive or when car is running. I was headed on a trip today when my car started to drive a little funny and it started to smell like oil again. I was able to pull off to the side of the road and check it and I was low on oil. I put more oil in the car and headed back on my trip. I had the cruise control set and all of a sudden the cruise kicked off and jolted the car while I was driving 70mph. After that it was hard to get my car to shift above the 3rd rpm. Car still has less than 150,000 on it. This problem has been going on for a few thousand miles. It has no oil leaks. There are no lights that go off, has had regular and scheduled maintenance with records.

2018 Toyota Camry. Consumer writes to recommend a recall notice on vehicle model because of defective cruise control.
While driving, with or without cruise control on the freeway, the transmission is extremely jerky. Any sort of incline seems to highlight the issue even further! I have taken it to the dealer, only for them to tell me nothing is wrong. But what would I know, even though I drive it 110 miles a day. The problem has also occurred from takeoff from a stop sign or stop light. The rpm's want to jump and the pedal is very touchy. I really hate the transmission jerking this hard when I'm driving 75-80 on the interstate. I also didnt want to pay this much for the Camry, which I hold in high regard, only for this to continue happening on a daily basis. I had it looked at with around 6k miles and now I have 13k on the car, with zero improvement. Toyota, please acknowledge and fix this issue for all owners experiencing this problem!.
While the vehicle is in motion traveling straight on a highway, warning bell sounds and three warning lights are illuminated simultaneously and constantly: brake, abs and stability control system. The center error message panel of the dashboard cycles through the three messages, as shown in the accompanying photos. While these messages are displayed, every few miles there is an apparent loss of power, slowing the vehicle. Pressing the accelerator further does not restore power. Fully releasing the accelerator for a couple of seconds and then pressing the accelerator does restore power. While these messages are displayed, cruise control also does not function. The warning lights remain on until the vehicle is turned off. Upon restarting, the warning lights are no longer illuminated. The photos are from October 29, 2018, but this problem has occurred intermittently and with increasing frequency (now every three days on average) for several weeks. I will be having a dealer investigate. I have seen this problem described for this vehicle make/model/year on other online complaint forums.

While traveling at highway speeds with the cruise control setup, the vehicle will slow down suddenly without warning. There are no vehicles in front of the vehicle when this happens.
When driving with the pre collusion system cruise control activated the car slams on it's brakes dropping up to 19 mph instantly and can come to a complete stop per Toyota. It almost got me run over by a semi. I filed via the Toyota lemon law website to no avail. In 2018 the pre-collusion sensor was tied into the pedestrian sensor. Hence at times when sensing periphery it slams on the brakes. Toyota has 71 disclaimers to protect themselves, but almost every Toyota since 1018 has this dangerous technology. Several dealerships are aware of this and my salesman told me to use the alternate cruise control since it happened to him also. I was advised of the same by two of their other employees. This system will result in horrific accidents. It typically activated when coming upon the quarter panel of another can and at times when it's oncoming traffic. Some of the disclaimers state: "snow coming off the car in front, signs, other cars, metal in the road" and so on. Toyota exudes indifference and insults me upon investigating the car is operating as designed. I emailed 114 newspapers nationwide, but don't know if anyone published. I've spoken with several dealerships that have had customer complaints. It happens both on streets and highways. It happened the first time around oct 1, 2018. To make things more frustrating twice stated the car is operating as designed. The problem has happened numerous times for no reason. I doubt that anyone cares, but I warn you: do not follow newer model Toyota vehicles closely as except for the rav4 they all have the same technology per Toyota. Twice Toyota informed me my car was operating as designed. That my friends is an ignorant statement. No car is designed to slam on the brakes with no obstructions ahead. Mine has done it at least 50 times, but there software doesn't reveal that so it also is deficient.
After taking delivery of the vehicle I noticed that the vehicle accelerates very poor and when the vehicle was set on cruise control it would drop speed for no reason.
My wife was driving home one day and told me that the car was shaking violently. When I drove it, it shook but was not too bad. I thought it was a tire balancing issue. Then it happened. I was driving one day on the freeway, the car started shaking and the abs was activated! I stopped the car on the road and I could smell the brake smoke. The the last straw, I'm driving home one day and the brakes seized I was able to get the car to the dealer who told me the brake actuator was the cause and it was common for the year/make/model but there was no recall and the cost of repair was $3k. Three thousand dollars for something that is "common". After having my car for 3 days, Toyota agreed to pay half of the costs, so it still cost $1500 to repair, plus $100 for a brake job, though I had a brake job 6 months old! like many many others, our 2008 Toyota Camry has and continues to experience major issues affecting the safe operation of the vehicle, including but not limited to brakes abs activating on its own, brakes seizing, premature brake pad/rotor wear, dashboard lights not working, car mats, brake pedal, sun visors, dash board melting, motor mount breaking for no reason, dashboard gauges not working (speedometer/odometer/fuel/temperature etc), cruise control working intermittently where it turns off by itself, door panels coming loose, speakers stop working properly. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Though we've enjoyed owning Toyotas in the past, we've owned this one for almost this one for almost 11 years. And though we're looking to get a new car soon, I'm fairly certain that because of the issues and more importantly the corporate treatment by Toyota regarding issues with their product, this may our last one. The NHTSA should encourage Toyota to do whatever is necessary to fix these issues before they become fatal.

Dynamic radar cruise control & pre-collision system failure during rain. On April 7th, 2018 while driving in light rain on i95-s in south carolina @ 65-70mph my cruise control and pre-collision systems stopped working, 2 lights came on on the left side driving console and an error message reading "clean sensor" dynamic cruise failure. I pulled into the next rest area and turned off car, "googled" where the sensor is, behind the Toyota emblem on from of car. Inspected it, it was clean on the outside other than being wet from rain. I "popped" the hood, I could not see any dirtiness either. I then started driving again and as soon as I was up to highway speed and it was still lightly raining the same thing happened. I had to drive over 250 miles with no cruise control nor pre-collision system. When it stopped raining several hours later and the next day there was no rain as well in hilton head island, SC the problem never reoccurred.
While driving to work my car started doing 50 mph without my foot on any pedal. I had to ride the brake to keep it within the speed limit of 20 in the school zone and then 35 on the road. When I arrived at a red light the car tried to move forward even with the brake pressed all the way down. I put the car in neutral and the engine started revving. I turned the car off and back on and still had the same revving and pulling. I pulled off the road and put it in park and the car kept revving. I turned it off and kept it off for several minutes, when I turned it back on I still had the same issue. I carefully drove the car back home (about a mile total trip) riding the brake the whole time to keep the car from getting away from me. No mat was near the pedals, I tried moving to a lower gear, I made sure all cruise controls were off, nothing helped. It was the most terrifying experience I have ever had while driving!.
Hesitation/lagging issues at both high and low speeds- hesitates both while driving and while taking off from a stopped position - shifts are horrible the car jerks a lot- in cruise control going 70-75 mph jerks hard, with no cars in front of it. Acceleration is horrible so much so, that we almost get rear ended when trying to merge with traffic. This started a week after I purchased this in July- Jan 13 we were almost in an accident to car not accelerating and jerking.

I have been owned this vehicle for last 5 yrs. I have complained about the speed every time I go to the dealer for service. I have complained about the down hill speed. Even if you put the cruise control on 45mil/hr still car gets speed up to 90 to 100 miles. On flat road car doesn't slow down even you do not push gas paddle. The dealer said it happens when you down the hill even if you use cruise control. I will take some body with me and video recording and post on line. I have been this problem since I bought the car. I have contacted Toyota for this but no result. My wife scare to drive this car. Please advise me how to resolve this issue or how to seek legal advise. I look forward to hearing back from you.

I had used the coast on my cruise control to reduce my set speed from 78mph to 71mph, after about 50 yards, my cruise control sped up on its own to about 76mph before I tapped the brakes and cut the cruise control off. After about 3 minutes, I cut the cruise control back on and went to use the set button to set my speed at 71mph. When I pushed the set button, the cruise control did not 'lock in' to the 71mph but instead started to speed up beyond 71mph and at 75mph I tapped the brake and cut off the cruise control. The next day, the next three time I went to cut the cruise control on and went to push the set button to set it at the speed I was going, the car always took off beyond what I was wanting to set it at and causing me to tap the brakes and I was forced to cut it off because after I had tapped the brake and let off the brake it would start to increase speed again.

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle would not decelerate when the contact removed pressure from the accelerator pedal. The failure also occurred when the cruise control function was activated. The contact would apply the brakes when using cruise control, the cruise control indicator light would shut off but the vehicle would maintain the set speed. The failure only occurred in 10 degree weather or below. The vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. The contact notified the manufacturer of the defect. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 34,200.

I was driving on m-80 across illinois, for about 2 hours on cruise control, set at 69 mph. I suddenly realized that the car seemed to be going too fast, as I passed a couple cars rather quickly. I glanced at the speedometer and saw it, in about one second, go from 85 mph to 87 mph and I immediately braked, thereby stopping the cruise control (?) from continuing to accelerate the car. When this happened, I did not have my foot on the gas pedal or my hand near the cruise control mechanism. The car just simply accelerated quickly on it's own. I tried to continue to use cruise control to drive back to michigan, however shortly thereafter, it began to rain/snow so I didn't use the cruise control after that. This is a new car that I just bought in September.

Driving with the cruise control set to approximately 45 mph. Cars ahead were stopping, so the cruise control cancel button was pressed. Instead of the car decelerating, it quickly accelerated as if the gas pedal had been pressed to the floor. The breaks were quickly pressed, but before the car came to a stop, it hit the rear end of the car ahead. The person in the other car had a precautionary medical exam a few days later, but no injury was reported. The driver and passenger of the Camry were not injured and air bags were not deployed. The Camry was declared totaled by the insurance company. The other car was repaired.
This event occurred twice: I was driving at approximately 30-40 mph w/out the cruise control engaged. When I took my foot of the gas pedal to apply the brakes the vehicle accelerated. I had to depress the brake pedal as hard as I could to stop the vehicle. In the second incident I had to take the car out of gear which caused the rpm to jump significantly. Once the car was turned off and restarted the car functioned normally. I took the vehicle to the dealer who could not find any open recalls nor could the dealer identify any problems with the vehicle. I also took the vehicle to a mechanic who was unable to identify any problems.

A friend and me were on a trip to marksville, la, and I put my cruise control on, going about 70 miles per hour down the interstate 20, and all of a sudden it just took off. It scared us so bad I didn't use it anymore during the trip. Will, this month my husband and me were going to sheveport, la and I had the cruise control on again and all of a sudden it just took off like a jet. I pressed on the brake and it quit. My husband asked me what I was doing putting on the gas like that. I told him I didn't do it and told him about the time before. So we didn't use this cruise control anymore during this trip. I'm writing to you about this problem in case something could happen that might cause death, just in case if I hit the brake and it doesn't work I'll have this in writing. . For you and my family. You never know. Have you had any more complaints about the cruise control?.

First incident occured while sitting at a red light. The light turned green, I went to accelerate and pedal was stuck, I attempted to press it again and my car just shot forward very rapidly. Thankfully no one was in front of me. This has occured several times over the years. Other times, I will be at a constant speed on the interstate and car will begin to accelerate very quickly then fall back down. It has done this while cruise control is on and while my foot is on the pedal. I tried braking, the breaks began to slow me down but the rpms still rose rapidly then fell back to normal several times in a row. It seems several people with my same year model and make have the same issue.

My son was driving on i35 in kansas. Had cruise control set to 78 mph. He indicated speed stated to increase on an uphill segment and speed reach ~ 100 mph on down hill side before he brake and regained control of vechile. Car was acquired in October/November 2009.
Clicking when in reverse and appling brakes shifting brake pads ? coming to stop car seems to shift to neutral ( better gas mileage) ? going up hill 70 t0 75 mph in cruise control car will down shift 1 or 2 gears this is the way the car programed . On all issues Toyota claims their is nothing they can do as the car is operating according to specs . They tell me the car is safe I have concerns as to how . Why is their a noise in the brakes ? why is the car down shifting they say their is a disclaimer not to use cruise in mountains . They seem to have a problems they can`t fix.
