Toyota Camry owners have reported 18 problems related to air bag on-off switch (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Camry based on all problems reported for the Camry.
The first problem: the car has acceleration delays, it bucks and lags when switching lanes and driving in heavy traffic. The car jerks when accelerating at slow speeds. I almost got into a serious accident due to the acceleration delays when making a left in heavy traffic. The second problem is, I received a vehicle alert message on may 30th at 10:30am regarding the srs airbag system. "a malfunction in the srs airbag system has been detected. Contact your Toyota dealer to have your vehicle inspected. " the airbag check light never lighted so I didn't see this message until a month in a half later. Dangerous for my passenger which is usually my oldest son. The car is in the dealership now and they are trying to figure out the airbag issue. I feel unsafe in my car due to acceleration delays. The VIN# is not in the recall list and I do not understand why not. It has the same issues as the other cars being recalled. The third problem: very randomly the seat belt alert alarm will start beeping while I'm driving my smallest son. Both of us have our seat belts and I do not own a big heavy bag. The car wont stop until I pull over, park, turn it off and on. This is not normal but it happens very randomly.

I was driving during night with lights on at hiway speed and all interior and exterior lights went out while driving 70 mph in pitch black! I had to guess where I was on curved overpass. I tried flicking the hi/low beam switch, but that didn't help. Couldn't get lights to come on until stopped, shut off car and restarted it. Has happened twice since I bought it new. First time was prior to any body damage, second time it wasn't completely pitch black so not as dangerous. Another trip we were on 4 lane interstate driving through a city and someone else had hit an orange construction barrel and it had flipped up into air and we hit it at hiway speed on left front corner of car. Had to replace bumper, headlight, washer fluid tank, repair fender. Air bags never went off. I am an emt and another day was driving to a gunshot call at 80 mph and reached for pager as it was falling and front wheel dropped off shoulder and I knew not to correct it, so just kept straight and came to stop in snow filled ditch. Air bags did not deploy. I had to get it towed out, and the tow truck driver indicated that it was a difficult ditch to get it out of. Had get get it realigned and replace right front headlight, bumper, and some other plastic pieces. Third time we were t-boned at an intersection in town, would estimate less than 30 mph, and air bags did not deploy. Damage was bad enough it was not driveable anymore and insurance company totaled the car out. We bought the car back to repair it to continue driving it, but now I am thinking that was a poor decision as I wonder about the safety of it. The last accident has me very shook up and I am waiting to have surgery on my neck now because of it. I wonder if the side air bags had worked, would I need to have my neck fused.

I have a Toyota camery 2013. I have no accident at all since I bought this car. But about 1 year ago, my airbag light is on automatically with on reason. I felt my life is in danger because if there is a collision happens, my airbag wont pump out. I have visited to different car dealor. They said the wire circuit might be wrong since they tried to switch airbag modules or the sensor nothing works so far. I assume the airbag which is the key component for our drivers' safety should be more robust than what I experienced.

July 2016, check engine light came on. Diagnostic indicated code p171. Was advised it was a laundry list of systems to check for this code. ( replaced the following; flex pipe, 02 sensor, spark plugs and fuel pump. For a total of 1400. 00) while driving on I-95 at 60 mph, airbag light, brake light, abs light and seat belt light all illuminated at the same time. Techometer surged out of control, engine temp gauge displayed no reading and speedometer went to zero. Oh and yeah, the ac that was blowing very cold air switched to warm or hot. All of these issues happened at the same time on the highway at 60 mph. Ironically, the check engine light did not illuminate and the mechanic is unable to determine the cause as there is no code issued from the computer for this very dangerous problem. This problem happens randomly and there is no warning. The engine performs normal during this issue with the exception of the ac that fails every time. This issue can and has happened when the car is sitting parked with engine running and while in motion. I am so afraid that this eventually will cause a serious accident or death. And the most annoying part is no mechanic can tell any of us why this happens or how to fix it. Please, please, help us before the worst happens.

Dash airbag light came on and the passenger air bag sensor showed off even through someone was in the seat. First the dealer tried to reset system, but two days later light came back on. Took to dealer second time and they had trouble finding issue at first. Issue traced to airbag switch under back seat. Learned that while light is on entire airbag system fails. Dangerous situation and surprised by lack of redundancy in such an important system. Cost of repair seems very excessive at $1,000 for a sensor, but have little choice. I realize that the car is ~10 years old, but failure of this component seem very premature. Car is in very good condition with no excess wear or subject to abuse.

My Camry was one of the Camry effected by the evacuator hose dysfunction which left my car drenched in water and the air bag sensor was damaged. There was mildew growth in my car and my car extensively damaged and connectors corroded. There needed to be massive repair of my car which left is flawed and value greatly depreciated I am again having problems as my car trunk does not close. It seems to be due to the trunk opening switch which is damaged. It happened first time around 20 December and it happened again today with the trunk not closing my car has suffered extensive damage due to the manufacturing fault and it is my right to a new car which is undamaged and Toyota is not cooperating with the repairs not alone changing the car.

You have several service notices to replace the seat covers for the seatbelt light remaining on also complaints on the air bag problems not just on the solara but also on just the Camry. The airbag warning light on the dash has come on and off since the car was new. It now is on most of the time. As I understand it when it is on it disables the airbag system which is dangerous. The "buckle safety switch" among other things may be the problem. Toyota has had problems in these areas with other models and made recalls. The same defects may be in other models and they have not yet recalled or repaired the cars. They should fix their defects for free fast prior to someone getting killed. Toyota just wants to charge me a thousand dollars to replace the entire airbag system on the passenger side, don't you think this is a little much when an inoperative safety system with your knowledge could end up in a liability suit if something did happen.
I bought a 1989 Toyota Camry about 3 years ago from the original owner. It now has 250,000 miles on it. Since I bought the car I've had trouble with the gas pedal sticking. I did not see this year listed on the recall list. You really have to push hard on it when you put it in drive to get the car to move. Was this particular year recalled? I'm also having trouble with the driver's side window power switch you have to squeeze the whole plastic piece to get it to work, and what about the airbags? I realize the car is old but I've heard that Toyota's run forever and mechanically it's been great so far (except for a little rust). Please let me know about these issues ASAP. . . . . . . Thanks.
I was driving down the highway and attempted to switch lanes. I hit the car in front of me in the rear and there was significant frontal damage to my car. My body was stopped by the impact of the steering wheel. I am now sore in my neck and back region.
I purchased a 2004 Toyota solara se new in 2004. My VIN # is [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Camry. While switching lanes at 35 mph, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. She stated that the tires slid without resistance and the air bags failed to deploy. The police arrived on the scene and filed a report. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, but no repairs were made. The contact sustained several minor injuries. The powertrain was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 23,000.
I recently purchased a new 2007 Camry le automobile from a Toyota dealership. The passenger side airbag activation weight sensor is inconsistent in behavior and unable to readjust to a new weight reading during a trip. My wife weighs approximately 100 lbs plus clothes. One time out of seven the airbag sensor will not register her as being sufficiently heavy to activate the airbag. I once restarted the car seven times to try to get it to register. I then moved myself (174 lbs plus clothes) to the passenger seat, started the car with an empty driver's seat, got out of the car and let my wife sit in the passenger seat. The airbag came on while I was sitting there, and did not change (to off) after my wife replaced me during the 20 minute trip. I have had to use this technique each time the sensor refuses to turn the airbag on when my wife is the front passenger. I have taken the vehicle into two different Toyota dealerships to have the sensor checked out, and they both insist it is working fine. I suspect that Toyota is using substandard parts that do not deal well with moderately high external temperatures; such as those not found inside a climate controlled maintenance bay. I fear that in haste we may miss one time it does not turn on and get into a serious collision that injures my wife.
Takata inflators: every time I fix my vehicle individuals cause hate crimes damaging my vehicle as I go to sleep or when I am not viewing my vehicle they must know exactly when I go to sleep because I cant catch them even though I think I know who it is I can not prove it so this is why I am complaining I remember checking my tires in the night noticing nothing wrong with them then checked in the mourning and noticed nails nailed in the tires then I noticed dried turtle wax all over the body of the car messing up the paint wheel alignment out of line right door power window malfunction trunk open power switch broken power sun roof sliding window broken vehicle was stationary this happened on different date in combination to the damage between 06/16/06 to 04/21/17.

A serious and dangerous flaw exists in the 2004 Toyota Camry le v6 which the company refuses to correct. Our car contains driver and front passenger side and curtain airbags. This was specificially purchased as optional equipment ($650. Additional) for the safety of the front passenger. The system is such that "airbag on" and "airbag off" indicator lights indicate the activation of the front passenger airbag, side airbag on the passenger seat and front passenger's seat belt ptensioner. I have been advised by the dealer that a person weighing 70lbs. Or more should activate the "airbag on" indicator light and afford protection for the front passenger. My spouse wieghs 95 lbs. She does not presently activate the "airbag on" indicator light although it did activate the first two months we had the car. What we have been doing to have the front passenger protected is for me (the driver) to press down on the seat while I start the car with my spouse in the front seat. This works about once every four or five attempts. The above is bad enough, but on two occasions, the indicator light went from "airbag on" to "airbag off" while we were driving. I had to pull over to try to activate the "airbag on" to afford protection for the front passenger. As I mentioned above, the company has refused to correct this dangerous situation. I spoke to the dealer (prestige Toyota of ramsey, NJ) and to the Toyota customer assistance center to no avail.
Dealership says the water from the stopped up a/c drain caused the electrical short and it will cost almost $800. 00 to repair. I do not have $800. 00. The mechanic told me the airbag could possibly deploy without notice and that puts everyone at risk when driving or riding in the car. It does not have an on/off switch and the dealership said that they could not deactivate the air bag. I transport children in my vehicle and I am very worried about them and anyone else including myself riding in the car. Please advise.
