Toyota Camry owners have reported 48 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Camry based on all problems reported for the Camry.
The airbag safety light has come on and remained on for 2 weeks the dealership told me it's a failed sensor. I have never been on a car crash. The airbag sensor is expected to remain functional for the life of the vehicle. Otherwise, my airbag might deploy unexpectedly or fail to deploy when I need them.

My husband was replacing door handle when he took off the left front door panel, he found that the airbag sensor has disintegrated from the inside out. We took pictures took it into dublin CA Toyota. They will not repair this. I then had some repair work done on the right side of my car and the owner of the shop also reported that the same thing on the right side . He stated that this is a default and it could very likely cause the airbag to go off prematurely or not work if there was an impact , that this was a danger to who ever was driving my car. I have photos and also a report from dublin Toyota . I'm not only in fear for my safety but the fact that Toyota shows no concern for my safety and how many others could have the same issue. Takata recall and dras ii failure for as yet to be determined additional vins my friend and I were in the front driver side and front passenger side seats, buckled up, sitting in traffic stopped on the 5 freeway headed north. We were rear ended at a high rate of speed, at a slight angle to our bumpter, by a driver which resulted in the total decimation of their vehicle and substantial damage to our vehicle which manifested itself as rear bumper and rear under body damage, as well as crumpling of the rear driver and passenger side frame and quarterpanels, to our 2016 Toyota Camry. Both the driver and I were thrown forward, and despite wearing our seatbelts I hit my head and knee on the passenger side dashboard area during the impact. No airbags inflated in the vehicle. Upon examining the vehicle immediately after the incident, the driver console displayed red error lights indicating that airbags had been deployed despite none having done so. Both the driver and I sustained serious and ongoing injuries as a result. The vehicle had approximately 27000 miles at the time of the incident. There are confirmed reports from Toyota demonstrating that airbag sensors are prone to failing at the chip edge due to large internal tensile stress inconjunction with defects in the sensor causing it to delaminate.

Passenger side seat sensor for air bag and seat restraint is not functioning. Passenger air bag is off even though someone is in the passenger seat weighing over 70 lbs.
During an accident in November of 2015 I received substantial injuries as a result of the airbag not inflating or the seatbelt engaging. I spoke with the body shop as to why neither system worked as designed, they could not answer this question. They believed that the sensors were compressed to engage the air bags but it did not engage. They also noted that when I hit the brakes the seatbelts should have locked which would have kept me stationary instead of allow me to hit the driver door jam above the steering wheel. Both vehicles were in motion. The vehicle that hit me made a left turn into my front left quarter panel damaging the entire panel and part of the front driver door.

2009 Toyota Camry. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle airbag issues. The consumer stated within days after the vehicle was at the dealer for its annual xylon treatment, he noticed the passenger air bag read air bag off. Despite an adult sitting in the front passenger seat. It was not an issue prior to the xylon treatment for the seats. The dealer stated it was likely a short within the seat mechanism. They proposed a repair of the seat track sensors and replacement of the seat belt buckle at a cost of $ 1200 and there was no guarantee given that it would solve the problem and the air bag would be functional.

My family and I were getting into the car for a day trip and my father in-law, who is a larger man (approximately 300 pounds), sat in the front passenger seat. When he did so, the passenger seat airbag and seat belt sensor lights came on. My husband checked to be sure that the sensors under that seat were connected and they were. The airbag and seat belt sensor lights have continued to remain on each time the car is running.
One early evening a deer jumped out in front of me and I hit the deer head on about 35 - 40 mph. It stopped my car the impact was so big. The weirdest things happened to the vehicle though. My bumper is messed up dent in the hood but instead of my airbags deploying the sensor broke off and started dangling behind my bumper under the hood. I got bad whiplash and back pain from my head hitting the wheel, why didn't my seat belt lock or airbag go off? I just don't get it. Can you help please?.

The mechanics said that the seat occupancy sensor needs to be replaced which for part he quoted $431. 50 and with labor would cost total of $640. 00. Is there a recall for this. The car is u around 95,000 miles and it needs robe fixed for my car inspection?.

When my wife would get in the passenger seat of our Camry and get belted in for a minute or so before I got in and started the car, the seat belt off light would illuminate. This has happened several times and does not seem to happen if I start the car before she belts in. This was reported to eddy's Toyota and they recalibrated the seat sensors but the problem did not go away.
Since Toyota is having all these problems I want to bring up a problem with my Toyota Camry that is a safety issue but has not caused a problem yet. It is out of warranty. About a two months ago I got an airbag malfunction light. I also noticed that the light on the console that tells you whether there is a passenger in the front passenger seat was malfunctioning too. So with someone in the front right seat, the indications are that the system thinks there is no one there so the airbag is off. I said something to the dealer but he did not mention anything about a recall. There is 122k miles on the car. Maybe this is just some sensor that wore out but I wanted to mention it with all the other safety issues going on with Toyota.
Airbag failure - 2007 Camry le. I bought this car new due to its airbag safety claims - 7 airbags with one to protect the driver?s legs. None deployed. I traveled on the highway 50-55 mph, a safe distance from the car (BMW) in front of me at rush hour on a sunny dry day. A car cut in front of the BMW causing it to brake instantly, almost coming to a stop. Deceleration was too quick. I went straight into the BMW at full speed. There was no time to hit my brakes. My car didn't?t swerve or dive. I wore my seatbelt but leaned forward slightly while firmly in my seat. My chest struck the steering wheel causing an inward displaced spiral fracture of my sternum. I also sustained a large groin bruise with an internal blood clot and chest bruise due to the seatbelt. Immediately I had difficulty breathing, got out of my car, lied on the pavement to catch my breath. Police/ambulance came quickly, provided oxygen, took me to a hospital. I remained in intensive care for 2 days. The insurance inspector & body shop investigated the car and were surprised the airbags didn't't deploy and couldn't find a reason why the airbags didn't deploy given the damage. The right airbag sensor was bent. My car was deemed totaled. I?m unable to return to my previous work schedule (long hours, intense workload) due to constant pain. I missed 2 weeks of work. Due to the fracture I cannot drive for 6 weeks. I requested that Toyota evaluate the car to determine if it was a vehicle-specific defect or the entire line (to prevent future injuries). Instead of disassembly and computer analysis, Toyota only reviewed photos and said it functioned as expected. "
the vehicle was totaled and the impact straight on and high speed. If not sufficient to activate the airbags, then what's their purpose? the vehicle is in storage for examination. Police reports and photos available. I would greatly appreciate NHTSA's response to this report.

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry le. While starting the vehicle, the contact observed that the passenger frontal air bag senor was not operating with a certain weight occupancy in the seat. The failure occurred on a constant basis and there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the air bag sensor was working as designed. The contact was very concerned about the safety risk involved, and that there was no resolution for the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 110,000 and current mileage was 112,920.
- the contact stated that the air bag light is off when the passenger who weighs 100 pounds sits in the passenger seat. The air bag light will turn on intermittently. The vehicle is a 2005 Toyota Camry. The failure mileage was approximately 4900 miles. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, and they tested the vehicle and found nothing wrong with the vehicle. The contact has the invoice from the dealer. Updated 04/17/07.
Consumer would like information regarding 2006 Toyota Camry passenger seat airbag system. The consumer stated when his wife sits in the passenger seat, most of the time the light indicates the passenger air bag is off. If she raises her feet off the floor when the vehicle is started, about 3/4 of the time the passenger air bag light will be on. The consumer stated it is his belief that the passenger air bag should be on without taking special measures.
I own a 2001 Toyota Camry le. I have owned the car for approx 11 months. In August my son while leaving the beach claimed the abs breaks locked up causing him to slide into a pole in the parking lot. Neither air bag was deployed but there was over 6000 damage. The mechanic said it was a low impact hit . . . The car was repaired and breaks checked and said to be working. Now just 7 months from that accident I was driving in a snow storm and despite my best driving I too experienced the abs breaks actually locking . . . On a hill in the snow causing my car to fish tail and all the while gaining speed leaving me with no way to slow down my passenger watch the speedometer go from 15. . . To 30. . . To 35 which is when he closed his eyes as I made one last attempt to steer the car straight we went off the road wiping out 2 or 3 small trees, a metal pole luckily there was a rather large rock under the snow that got stuck under the tail end of the car leaving the car "nose" end into the ground. Neither air bag deployed once again. The drivers side light was completely torn out, the tires came partially off the rim and the frame is now twisted the impact was defiantly over 30 mph with no air bag deployment. The anti- lock bakes . . . Locked and had they not I would not have fishtailed . . . This is the second accident my car has had due to the break system. This one totaled my car. Which I owe 11,000 on . . .

Both 02 sensors went out along with fuel sensor with under 2000 miles. Then the catalytic converter went out under 5000 miles. The airbag light are off then on ??? dealer said working properly? dealer said it would be fixed 18 days later? they said parts were bad and not the right parts for the car? car stalls and accelerates. It get 12mpg since 02's and fuel sensors fixed. Bad gas mileage.
Air bag light comes on at start up and stays on when weather gets cold. Defect does not occur in summer. Also if vehicle is warmed up or kept in a heated building or the weather is warm the air bag light does not come on at start up and stay on. Dealer says must replace sensor.

The passenger side air bag of our 2004 Camry repeatedly disengages. The dealership has re-calibrated the computer five times now and the dealership service manager says this is a known problem to Toyota but their engineers have not figured out how to fix it. They refuse to replace any parts, saying that there are too many parts that could be the problem and they'd just be "throwing parts" at it. They also claim the lemon law does not apply to this problem specifically because they are not replacing parts but simply re-calibrating. I don't know what to put in here for incident date because there have been so many. I will use the last one below, but this is a repair we've had to seek again five times. The only reason we have not had to seek it more than that is that normally my wife drives this car alone and rarely has a passenger. The airbag only disengages when there is a passenger. It appears there may be some connection between seatbelt use and putting car in or out of gear. This last time it went out we were stuck in traffic for about an hour. At one point the passenger released the seatbelt. We were taking the car in and out of gear every 5-10 minutes to move just a few yards. Another time the airbag disengaged was somewhat similar. We had pulled into a rest area. I was in the passenger seat and got out. My wife later moved the car (driving) and was waiting for me to get back in with the car running, in gear. When I got back in, shortly thereafter we noticed the airbag disengage light came on.
While driving the steering wheel dropped into the drivers lap, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Steering wheel adjustment came loose, causing the steering wheel to fall into the driver's lap. Vehicle is currently being investigated by the driver's insurance company. Also, the air bags failed to deploy. The driver had an accident as a result of the steering wheel failure.

Air bags failed to activate in direct head-on collision at o/a 35 mph. Personal injuries from shoulder restraints which could/would have been averted if air bags bhad inflated. Sensors apparently failed to operate dersite sufficient impact to virtually destroy entire front end.
Airbag light flashed on/off back in Aug. 2003. I took it to the dealership to be repaired and thought that was the end of the problem. Almost a year later in July 2004 my airbag light started flashing on/off again, I then returned it to the dealership where once again it was "fixed or repaired" now, two months later I'm having again the same problem. I don't think Toyota knows how to fix this issue and it's a real concern to think that if there's a possible accident or inncodent the air bag(s ) may not deploy. I'm frustrated with this problem and am filing a complaint in hopes that maybe someone will listen or pay attention. This could get to be a costly issue that never gets resolved. I know I'm not the only person to have filed a complaint about this issue. This is a defective vehicle with a frustrating problem.
My husband was driving home from work in his 2002 Toyota Camry, le v6, and another vehicle pulled in front of him. The front left drivers side was totaled. None of his air bags deployed and he has suffered a critical spinal injury. According to the Toyota owner's manual, showing the placement of the airbag sensors, all airbags should have deployed. I have tried several times to contact Toyota's headquarters and of course, no one wants to talk to you or give you any information. We buy Toyota vehicles because of their saftey and reliability, shame on us.
On going problem with airbags and it's sensors coming on. Was in the dealers on two occasions. A warning on bill that a possible re check will occur.
When 98 Camry was first bought in sept 2000, I had a problem with my air bag light going off ever since it was driven off lot. Dealership fixed and I did not have a problem ever since. In June 2003 I had floor wiring harness replaced. The end of oct, beginning of sept I needed my alarm system switched out with new key system (the alarm system is something I needed to have done). Since the alarm system was changed out, my air bag light has been going off since and they tell me there is a sensor problem again but I would have to pay for them to fix. This is the same problem I had when I drove the car off the lot. Now that the warranty is up they do not want to fix. They want me to pay for a problem that I feel is theirs. Its only been 3 years that I have had this car and I fill that this is a safety issue. Why would I keep having a problem with my airbag indicator? this airbag can go off anytime or may not go off when it is really needed.
