4 Suspension Noise problem of the 2017 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/21/2018

While traveling over a speed bump, driveway entry, or railroad crossing, a loud mechanical clunking sound occasionally comes from the car. The clunking sound is definitely from the front, and appears to be from the right front suspension. The sound occurs when the car comes down to its lowest point of suspension travel. This clunking sound occurs most frequently over speed bumps, and occasionally at driveway entries, and railroad crossings. The clunking sound has occurred with the brakes on and off. The sound has most frequently occurred at slow speeds and occasionally occurred at normal street speeds. The clunking sound has occurred while the steering wheel is turned and while it is straight. The car is one year old, and the first incident occurred between 8k-9k miles. The car has not been in any accident, or any condition that would damage the suspension, and the suspension has not been serviced. The car has not been inspected for the issue yet. The car will be inspected at the next scheduled service of 15k miles. The issue has not yet been reported to the dealer because the issue is intermittent. The issue cannot be exactly replicated during a text drive, but it happens randomly and often enough to be a nuisance.

9 Suspension Noise problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

While driving on 1/20/2014 I noticed a loud metal clanking noise coming from right front of the vehicle, the vehicle was also unstable to drive and it felt "rough" on 20/30 miles. I took the car to the Toyota dealer on 1-27-2014 where I had purchased it brand new and where all the maintenance routine services had been done to date I was told that the rigth front coil spring was broken, the struts were leaking, the right front wheel bearings were defective and that I could not drive the car out of the lot because of safety concerns. The repairs costed me $2077. 44. I immediately contacted the Toyota manufacturer and was told that the car was outside warranty and there was nothing they could do for me. They gave me a case # 1402280082. I filed a complaint with the massachusetts attorney general's office and I am still awaiting mediation. Today, 4/15/2014 less than three months from the time that this problem occurred and I had all those repppppairs done, while driving the same car at 50-55 mph the same rattling metal loud noise but only worse happened and the car became very unstable. My husband checked out the car and noticed that the coil spring on the driver front side is broken. I called the local Toyota service department and made an appointment to bring the car in tomorrow, 4/16/2014 to be inspected. I have read similar complaints here on your website of over 50 similar complaints with fronts suspension on 2009 Camry's. There needs to be a recall issued on these vehicles for these issues since it endangers people's lives. Please help! I am terrified to drive this car especially with my two grandchildren ages 2 months and 9 months. This should not be happening to a car with 68k miles that I paid over $26,000 for. By the way when the car had less than 30k miles on I had to replace all 4 tires because the dealer told me that the tires were worned out.

10 Suspension Noise problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

About a week ago I noticed and extremely loud rattling nose coming front the front suspension of my 2009 Toyota Camry. I explained the problem to my husband who has experience in car repairs. Upon inspecting my car he discovered that the front strut coil spring had broken. One complete bottom coil of the spring had sheared off and was lying inside the strut coil spring creating the loud rattle sound. By looking at the cross section of the coil breakage point it was very obvious there was a crack in the coil metal and from that point the breakage originated. Before this breakage happen I was scheduled for a recall bulletin that I received from Toyota for the power window switch. Upon arriving at the dealership service dept the next day we explained the problem to them. They explained that since the car had reached 50,000 mile there was nothing that they could do except charge me $660 to replace both front strut springs. I declined their offer because they did not have the parts in stock and I felt this was a defect in the spring in the first place, why should I have to bear the cost of this defect? later that day I contacted my local mechanic about the problem. After his inspection of the problem he recommended replacing both front strut assemblies not just the springs because of the excessive amount the struts were leaking. The good news is I now have new front struts at a cost of less that half of what Toyota wanted just to replace the springs and a huge improvement in ride quality that my vehicle now exhibits. I have owned 6 Toyota’s in the previous years and ran them all to 200,000 plus miles and never had to replace a strut. I think we have an obvious problem with the newer generation Toyota Camry that needs to be addressed.

11 Suspension Noise problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry

12 Suspension Noise problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

I went to pick up my vehicle on September 3, 2012. On the way I found the vehicle was rigid and the suspension was not working properly. When car hit various imperfections in the road there was a banging noise and the car would vibrate. I felt dizzy as during my time spent driving car. The car seems unsafe to use. This should not occur on a vehicle that cost $31k and on the first day that I am driving vehicle. In addition the steering felt more weighted on the left as opposed to the right. When I turned left there was greater resistance. I contacted the customer relations manager that same day and he indicated he felt it maybe a tire pressure problem. He then stated that I should bring the car in for service department to see what the issue is. I later discovered that the radio sound fluctuated. I had contacted the service department to confirm my appointment and discovered that an appointment was never made. I notified Toyota main office and they provided me with a case # 1209050107. The main office at Toyota indicated that they would contact the customer relations manager. I will be going to advantage Toyota in valley stream, NY on 9/8/12. Please have someone investigate the issue regarding the suspension on these vehicles. I don't want someone else to incur the same issues I have.

13 Suspension Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

I have 2003 Toyota Camry le. . I got into multiple issues with the vehicle. First one is the sun roof/moon roof getting jammed and not closing properly resulting in water leak and as well as high cabin noise. Dealer told it will cost 2000 + to fix the sunroom/moon roof as this need to be replaced complete. Also while doing the 110000 service dealer said the front and rare suspension system needs to be replaced which will cost 2000 + usd. I am requesting Toyota to look into this and get this fixed for me.

14 Suspension Noise problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/04/2011

When driving the car and slowing to a stop or accelerating from a stop there is a loud hollow clunk noise from the back of the car. We've taken it to two dealerships and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. We were told it was normal suspension rebound noises. We noticed the noise at 158 miles and we are well over 2000 miles on the car and we still are hearing the noise.

15 Suspension Noise problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

If the car sits for several hours and I go for a drive, the first dip in the road that I hit at approximately 20-30 mph will make my front suspension make a loud solitary hollow metal clunk noise. If I drive around and hit the exact same dip again, there will be no unusual noise. If I continue to drive the car, I will occasionally hear the noise from the front end of the car, though not as loud, when I drive over dips at approximately 20-30 mph. This happens the majority days that I drive the car. I have had the car looked at by two Toyota dealerships and a Toyota engineering team. They have all been unable to replicate the problem and they have visually inspected the front suspension of the car. They have said everything is normal. I have used my cell phone to video record the event happening and have showed this to them. They are unable to say what is causing the noise and no one has changed out any parts in the front suspension.

16 Suspension Noise problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

My mechanic noticed that all 4 struts were leaking when I had my tires rotated. I noticed that my car was very unstable on the road and swaying all over the place. Took the car to my Toyota dealer. They said that the struts were leaking, but according to Toyota extra care, some leakage is normal and the struts were not leaking enough to have them replaced under the warranty. The car continued to get worse and I took it back to a Toyota dealer on 2/14/12. They told me all 4 struts were leaking past the normal amount and should be replaced. They also said the front and real links and bushings should be replaced because the car is all over the road and there is noise from these components. They contacted Toyota extra care who said they needed to send an adjuster out to look at the vehicle. The adjuster said that only 2 struts were leaking enough to be replaced and no other parts needed replacing. He also said he didn't hear the noise. Amazing! extra care has refused to honor the warranty on the other parts because they say they have not failed. The dealer claims they should all be replaced. I think it is absurd that Toyota extra care is standing on a technicality on how much the struts are leaking and will not cover all 4. They are leaving me with an unsafe vehicle. The certified mechanics that have looked at my car all say that once the strut is leaking it should be replaced no question about it. I have read that this is a problem with many Toyota Camrys from this year. I paid for the extended warranty and Toyota should do the right thing. Not wait until more parts fail or I have an accident because the suspension is compromised. I will never purchase another Toyota because of this. This is a safety issue that should be taken care of.

17 Suspension Noise problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that there was a loud noise coming from the front driver side wheel. A local mechanic diagnosed that the vehicle had a suspension failure on both the front driver and passenger side. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000 and the current mileage was 77,000.

18 Suspension Noise problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

While turning the Toyota steering wheel, I can notice a severe clicking or thumping sound from the steering wheel. It appears there is a problem with the suspension or the struts. I took my Toyota to get it check out a few months before the warranty expired. They indicated the struts were leaking. One strut was severely leaking so they replaced it. The other strut was also leaking but not as severe so it was not replaced. However, the steering column has the aforementioned noise and I know, through internet searches, that many owners have experienced this problem. It's likely a mass defect that should be looked at ASAP before someone is severely injured. My wife uses the car to take my children to school so I am very concerned about the safety of the vehicle.

19 Suspension Noise problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/08/2010

20 Suspension Noise problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/29/2009

I bought a new 2008 Toyota Camry in Nov 2007, at around 50k miles I heard a grinding noise while driving and experienced vibration in the steering wheel . I brought it into the dealer and they noted the strut needed to be replaced. Not soon after that repair @ around 80k miles I experienced the same noise and vibration in the wheel again and I took it to a les schwab auto shop they linked the problem to the struts and wheel bearings which caused uneven tire wear. As the car was still under warranty I took it to the dealer again, they agreed with the assessment from les schwab and replaced the struts again and the wheel bearing. The dealer agreed that I should not be replacing the struts as often as I was on a relatively new vehicle. Dealer mentioned that it is a defect and Toyota (the corporation) is aware of it and that I should be getting a letter in the mail to that effect. To date ( 2/26/10) I have received no such letter. The concern is that NHTSA has not yet gotten to the bottom of all the defects that are out there with the Camry models for the years that are now being recalled for accelerator issues. With the recent recall I had to bring my Camry in to get the gas pedal shortened and to install the shimmy to prevent the sudden acceleration. Please look into the issue with the struts as the strut housing serves as a structural part of the suspension system and it connects the upper strut bearing to the lower ball joint so that the entire assembly can then pivot when the steering wheel is turned. Struts therefore affects the driver's ability to steer and maneuver the vehicle safely, I now see that the corolla are being recalled for steering issues, I am concerned that this is not limited to only that model as my Camry had issues with steering that was linked to defective struts. Struts should not wear out as often as mine did on a new car. For the safety of Toyota drivers investigate how many vehicles from 2007 to 2010 have had issues with struts.

21 Suspension Noise problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/28/2008

I have a '98 Toyota Camry le with a front-end rattling noise emanating from the suspension. When I drive off in the morning (cold) over a moderately bumpy road, its sounds like my front end was going to fall off. This rattle is definitely temperature dependent and driving me crazy. Looking at the web found the same problem also on Camrys and avalons from '97-'99.

22 Suspension Noise problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/11/2006

My 2007 Camry has defective suspension components that results in the inability to safely carry more than two (2) people. My wife and I traveled out of town on vacation and we attempted to take two other family members with us but were not able to do this. The rear of the vehicle dropped very low when the four of us loaded up and started to depart on our trip. The car was very hard to drive and any bumps on the highway caused the car to actually bottom out on the suspension stops. Oncoming vehicles at night were flashing their high beam lights because my car's lights were aimed too high as a result of the suspension sagging in the rear. Another problem with the car is the windshield wipers operating at the high speed setting during heavy rain. The car actually rocks laterally side to side as the wiper arms sweep across the windshield. This motion is very severe and is very totally unacceptable. The car has a very loud wind noise at highway speeds on both the driver and passenger sides, also driving in a heavy rain, the water displaced by the front tires sounds like it is coming into the front driver and passenger compartment causing a very loud noise. I have owned several Toyota Camry vehicles, the last one prior to this 2007 xle was a 2005 xle Camry. I have never experienced any of the problems listed in this complaint. The 2007 xle has excellent power and very good highway mileage. I sincerely wish Toyota motor corp. Would find a way to correct these problems. The defective suspension has forced me to not allow any more than two (2) people at a time. And for information the owners manual states the maximum allowable load is 900 lbs. The load weight including baggage was approx 720 lbs when I attempted to drive the car on the trip.

23 Suspension Noise problem of the 1999 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/24/2006

: the contact stated while driving over a bump the vehicle makes a clanking noise. The vehicle has been to an independent repair shop where the strut was replaced, but this did not repair the problem. The contact indicated that shortly after the warranty expired a persistent clanking sound was noted in the front suspension. An independent garage diagnosed it as a failed strut which was replaced, but the noise continued. This was a common complaint for the car and subsequent model years. The contact claimed the Toyota dealers were aware of the defect which was the result of a defective strut mount design. However, repairs were at contact's expense, not the dealers. The total repair cost was $400. A call to Toyota failed to obtain any information regarding safety implications.

24 Suspension Noise problem of the 1999 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/28/2005

25 Suspension Noise problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/14/2003

Front suspension makes excessive noise over bumps. The mechanics I sent it to don't know what's causing the noise. I had all the struts and springs changed but the noise persists. All the parts were from the dealer. I would like to know what I can do and if this is a safety hazard. Thank you for your help.

27 Suspension Noise problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/15/2002

Front suspension, noise when driving over bumps, uneven pavement. Sounds like something is loose. Dealer suggests trying different parts but none seems to correct the problem. Its getting expensive and the problem is still there. The service tech stated his wife has the same car and it has the same problems and was not sure how to correct it. He also stated the Toyota solara was having the same problems.

28 Suspension Noise problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 06/08/2002

The front suspension was excessively shaky. It vibrated and made a lot of noise when going over a rough road. From my research on this subject at the NHTSA web site, there are 52 reports of this problem with the 1998 Toyota Camry model. I had the problem fixed at a dealership in louisiana. They replaced the strut mounts on both the right and left side of the front suspension at a cost of $420. 82. They told me this was not covered under warranty or recall by Toyota. It is my wish that Toyota be held responsible for what is a design defect in the '98 Camry.
