4 Starter problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/22/2015

Without any indication of a potential problem, my car lost complete power while driving it. In addition, my speedometer was stuck on 50 (I just got off the interstate & was going residential speed), my gas gauge reflected I had a full tank (I actually had a half of a tank) and my temp gauge said my engine was completely cool. I don't know what caused this to happen, but I'm lucky that it did not happen to me while I was on the interstate! let me clarify the facts here- total power loss while driving, steering wheel locked up, gauges - including the speedometer- while at a complete stop were stuck on inaccurate readings, no indication of an issue prior to it stalling! (prior to the car dying on me- headlights and interior lights were bright, radio worked, gauges were accurate. There was no loud noise when this happened, it is not the timing chain, the starter and battery are brand new, there was no hesitation and no trouble when starting it up. ) I have not been able to get the car to start since. Did not respond to a jump. From my understanding, there should have been some order in which power is lost - example radio first- dimming lights, etc. Before power is lost to the entire car while driving.

5 Starter problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/09/2014

While traveling NW on hwy 99 through merced CA at 08:30 am Nov. 9, 2014, I experienced a sudden acceleration of my car while in cruise mode going up the ramp just at the NW edge of merced. It continued to accelerate till the rpm guage was into the red. At the same time, I was very tense, maneuvering in traffic while applying the brakes in an effort to slow down or stop, which heated up until they were barely working. I shut the motor off while in drive and turned it back on a few times and each time the engine went right into high rev mode again. I finally put the transmission into n and shut the engine off and coasted to the side of the road about a mile or so from where the problem started, regained my composure and allowed the car to sit a few minutes. I tried the engine starter and things seemed normal again so I cautiously exited the highway about a 1/4 mile from where I had stopped. Things continued to act normally so I came back home 18 miles and had no more problems. What do I do with this car? keep driving it this way? take it back to Toyota? they did the recall repair for this problem already, yet now this!! very troubling!.

7 Starter problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/09/2011

While exiting a parking lot onto a main road, the car stalled during acceleration. The driver attempted to restart the car, however, the car would not start. The starter continued to turn, but the engine would not turnover. After waiting approximately 10 minutes the car restarted, but then stalled again after approximately 30 seconds of running. The driver noticed the check engine light on the instrument panel was illuminated. Thinking it may be a fuel level problem, the driver went to the gas station and bought three gallons of gas and put it in the car. But the engine stalled again after running for a few seconds. The driver let the car sit in the parking lot over night and attempted to restart it in the morning, again, the car stalled after approximately one minute. After reading numerous entries pertaining to the Corolla's ecm, the driver had to get the car towed to the nearest dealership.

8 Starter problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/03/2010

I have a 2005 Corolla s, and the ecu problem is well-known, and is a safety hazard. I had my first problem with my ecu, at 62k miles, and thank god, it didn't happen while I was on my daily 40 mile commute on a high-speed, heavy-traffic highway. My car just wouldn't start at random when I was leaving a store, the starter wasn't cranking, nothing was happening, just nothing when I turned the key. No lights on my dashboard, other than the door light where I had the door open (it was 95 degrees, and my power windows obviously weren't working). Did research and saw that the ecm is a terrible problem on 05-07 Corollas, and the Toyota service man agreed that was the problem. Got it replaced, and not even 24 hours after picking it up from the dealer, it happened again, stranding me at work with no way to get home. This is a ridiculous problem, and it is certainly a safety hazard with many reports of the car stopping while people are driving.

9 Starter problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

Replaced three denso starters in 1/2010, 9/2006, and 9/2003 in '99 Toyota Corolla with only 90k mileage in car. I believe these starters are defective because in 2003 mechanic replaced original denso starter with remanufactured denso. I had 42k mileage on car. He inspected the starter and the invoice states that the starter was defective. I emailed denso salesperson to complain about the product and request reimbursement. He said no because there is only 12k warranty on starter. Again I had a starter replaced in 2006, and 2010. Something is seriously wrong that I am replacing starters every three years. I have never had to replace a starter in my life. I want this company investigated and want my money back.

10 Starter problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

My car on an intermittent basis will not start as well. . . . . There is no cranking whatsoever. Although upon turning the key all the lights on the dashboard light up in a normal manner, there is absolutely no sound from the engine. After either a few tries or roll starting the vehicle (manual transmission). . . . It will start. I brought it to the dealer once and they originally thought it was the battery, then the starter *which they proceeded to replace, then after a few days the same problem occurred again. . . . I am bringing it back to the dealer.

11 Starter problem of the 1998 Toyota Corolla

12 Starter problem of the 1997 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/11/2005

My daughter went out in the morning to start her 1997 Toyota Corolla and it was very noisy, she tried to turn car off and it would not stop. The engine kept running and the starter was stuck in the starter position. She pulled the fuse for the ignition and the engine stopped but the starter was still in a high whine and was trying to start the car. (obviously stuck) it was getting very hot and smelling. Smoke started to come out of engine and she was about to try to unhook the battery cable when the starter quit. She was extremely lucky there was no fire, it was very close to that. She had no previous indications on starter problems before that. The car is in the shop. Starter is being replaced, battery cables and a new wiring harness due to the fact everything got too hot and melted. (over $1000).
