I rented this car (Toyota Corolla 2015) and was unfamiliar with all the details. My previous experience with many cars over the years never brought me an awareness that the trunk lid could potentially damage my head, neck, or back in a severe and possibly long lasting way. I naturally opened the trunk lid, bent in to pull out my bag, and wham! the lid slams down on me. One of the most damaging parts is the latch which protrudes past the trunk's edge and forms a triangle shape. This is what concentrated the blow directly into my spine. I have seen complaints of this same problem, "trunk lid wont stay in upright position" dating back to 2009. Why has this not been fixed years ago before it was able to injure me? and how many unsuspecting people will continue to be injured in the future? this is why I am taking the time to express my anger, frustration, and disgust. Please I am calling this out, do something! Toyota deserves a class action lawsuit!.

First, the trunk stopped opening from the inside. Also, the vsc off light, check engine light, and traction light all came on at the same time while I was driving and I have no idea why. The gas cap was on tightly, the fuel levels were right, there was no need for an oil change, and the car is only 2 1/2 years old in which I did not do any wreckless driving.

I notice that my trunk doesn't remain up after I open it. This is causing the hood to come down on my head. It is very dangerous. The other problem is that the driver's door opens out too far.
Under certain limited conditions, the trunk doesn't hold open by itself. Especially noticeable when parked facing uphill in owner's driveway. Owner has unexpectedly been hit in the head several times while retrieving cargo because the trunk just comes down hard from the fully open position. Several times when this happens, the latch area of the trunk lid has impacted owner's head. This latch is only covered by a small plastic piece, otherwise it's metal. The owner hasn't been injured, but it has caused them pain each time it happens. Owner had it checked at a Toyota dealer. They said it occurs because an aftermarket rear spoiler was installed by a prior owner. Dealer says this aftermarket spoiler is too heavy, causing trunk not to stay open. Dealer offered to remove spoiler for a fee. We've since discovered Toyota has issued a TSB that tells dealers to replace one or both torsion bars for this condition. We'd like to NHTSA to review this & see if enough other complaints have been made to consider a recall.
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Corolla. While attempting to unload the trunk of the vehicle it suddenly closed on the contact injuring his head. The vehicle failure was not diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. The current mileage was 16000 and the failure mileage was 14000. Updated 12/15/10. The consumer stated to his knowledge, Toyota did not install any type of support mechanism. Updated 12/27/10.
Feb. 15, 2010 national highway safety administration re. : defect in Toyota Corolla I recently reported to both my local Toyotal dealership and to Toyota motor sales USA (national customer relations, 9001 southwestern Ave, dept. Wc11; torrance, CA 90509) that the play on the trunk lid on our 2010 Corolla was so loose that even though the trunk lid would be pushed all the way up, a sudden gust of wind would send it flying down on whoever was loading items into the trunk. This has happened on several occasions to my wife. On one occasion the lid came down on my wife's head and again on her arm on several different occasions. Please see the attached photo showing the effect of the lid being blown down on her arm. The dealer agreed that compared to the trunk lid on my camry, the lid on the Corolla did indeed swing too freely and that the cause was a design flaw as the lid was functioning within the manufacturer's specifications . The dealer suggested that I contact Toyota. I did that, explained the situation, and was assigned case. Nothing has been done regarding this design flaw. Perhaps you can convince Toyota to reduce the "play" on the trunk lid so that we can actually use the trunk of the car without experiencing injury.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated the vehicle trunk would fall back down on him extremely hard when opened. The dealer stated that the trunk was designed that way and advised the contact to be careful when opening the trunk with limited force. The contact was concerned that if the trunk fell back onto his head, it could potentially cause severe injury. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 7,000.

Trunk lid on Toyota Corolla uses torsion bars for support. However in the full up position( 90 degree) to about almost closed ( 30 degree) the weight is not counter balanced . In the full up position it is prone to fall when the car is parked facing up hill on a slope as slight as 10 degrees common in parking lots for rain runoff. Any wind or placing a bag of canned goods in the trunk causes it to fall striking the owner in the head ,neck or shoulders. This is happening multiple times a week as I use the trunk daily since the day I purchased the vehicle in late December 2008. My other vehicle ( 1993 Ford taurus) also uses torsion bars but even though it is a much heavier trunk lid it is stable in all positions from just open to fully open ( 90 degree- straight up). I have complained to Toyota and they are not responsive. I have been hit by this trunk lid numerous times as I use the trunk on a daily basis. As an male adult I have not been seriously injured yet but I believe this poses serious risk of injury for women and children. This trunk lid and torsion bar system is poorly designed and has the potential for serious injury. The force is sufficient that one occasion it caused a bleeding cut to my scalp upon impact. The dealer in late January added a small extension arm that connects to the torsion bars but this had no benefit.
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Corolla. While unloading the trunk, the trunk lid suddenly dropped and struck the contact in the face. The contact was injured. She has not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 14,000. Updated 05/19/08.

Engine compartment hood was raised to check fluids. Wind attempted to force the hood closed, distorting the point where the hood support rod enters the inside of the front right fender, and also creating a distortion on the hood finish. Went to village Toyota in homosassa florida and was give a run around about it being a body shop problem and not under warranty. I might also add that the trunk lid is not secure in the upright position;it will close on its own approx 8 inches and has hit me and my wife about the face and head several times.

In March, 2007, I had an accident. The rear end of the car was completely broken. I thought it was totaled. Safeco had it repaired. The trunk does not stay secure, I am continuously taking my vehicle to the body shop for repairs to the body. The body parts just pop in (plastic) and the trunk lid does not stay shut. I am very disappointed, as well as it being very dangerous when I am riding down the road and the trunk's lid flops open, causing blind visibility .

I own a 05 Corolla xrs. I have had a problem with metal tearing issues. First one was the muffler bracket tore off and so my muffler was just hanging there. I had that welded at a muffler shop and it has fixed the problem for now. Second is my trunk latch, this is the part that is bolted to the body of the car that the trunk latches onto. This piece has completely tore out of the body, it has been rewelded a few times but it can't be welded anymore. I keep it tied closed and can't use my trunk. Now today 9-26-2007 is the last draw, the muffler bracket has completely broke in half and not were it was welded. I feel this is a very cheaply made car and will never buy a Toyota again. I am extremely disappointed and the dealer tells me it I out of warranty and they don't want nothing to do with it, I keep getting told to see a body shop. I don't have $1,000. 00 to replace the rear panel of my car every time the trunk latch decides to tear out of the body because the metal is to thin.

On sept. 10th, 2004 my son tried closing my trunk on my Corolla le and the plastic mechanism broke and prevented the trunk lid from locking. He reports that he did no more than to try to close the trunk after opening it. This seems like one of those incidents where there is a structural problem and most owners feel they are the culpret of its' malfunction. I had one of those Corolla's that had a faulty catalytic converter. The Toyota agency after 1 1/2 years replaced it free after smelling like rotten eggs for that length of time. I was told originally by the service dept. , it was the gas I put into it, or that it would tkae longer then normal for the catalytic converter to break in. Finally, it was replaced because of so many reports and complaints by others who suffered from the same smell. I wonder if this is the same about the trunk lid mechanism?.

Curious about the inside trunk release on my vehicle, one of my friends sat in the trunk to see if he could get himself out. To our surprise, he couldn't because the handle which is supposed to glow in the dark didn't because it is almost never exposed to natural light. I think the glow in the dark trunk release handles are an excellent idea and a step in the right direction but without a method to keep them glowing (perhaps an electric light which turns on when the car is running), they are useless to a person trapped inside a trunk.
