Toyota Matrix owners have reported 27 problems related to side/window air bag (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I have owned this car for only a few months. I recived the recall for passenger side airbag. Took to Toyota dealership on dixie . I also asked for them to diagnose the srs light being on on the dash. I was told by dealership I needed a new front driver airbag due to a short. I looked back at the Matrix recalls . And there is a recall on the steering wheel cable ssue that is related to the airbag and the circuit over hearing that is related to an airbag recall issue. I called the pervious owner and she said she had an accident and none of the airbags deployed. She also took the car to dealership for a recall in 2016 and was told she needed a new front driver airbag. This car should be included in the current recalls for the above issue. This issue has placed my family and myself in an unsafe situation due to the unsafe ,safety equiptment. The srs lights comes on when the car is started and does not go off. This is the reason for the diagnosis. Toyota should stand behind their product and correct the safety equiptment failures.

Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the passenger side air bag sensor light would remain illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer Toyota whittier ocated at 14577 e, whittier blvd, whittier, CA 90605 who diagnosed that the air bag coil was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000. Jft.
Takata recall - while driving on a highway, there was a slow up, and I braked, but stopped right at the rear bumper of the car in front of me. However, another car was coming behind me and couldn't stop, or didn't notice that traffice had stopped. He pushed me into the car in front of me. At that moment, which was not a severe front end hit, I saw fire, an explosion, and the airbag blew out the entire dash on the passenger side, and flew to the back seat behind the driver's side. Also, the driver's side airbag deployed. Metal was flying out of the passenger side airbag in the front. We could not believe the damage that resulted from such a somewhat minor accident. Additionally, the car was totaled which has been a strain on us! now, about 30 days after the accident, we just received a card in the mail telling us of the recall. We had no idea there is an ongoing problem with airbag recalls! today, I checked online for this problem, and found many sites describing the issues. However, my car is not even on the recall list!!! I was in the car alone and was affected by the accident, however, I dread to think what would have occurred if I had a passenger with me. I am including some pictures.
I was in an accident. My driver's side airbag deployed and then instantly collapsed. It offered no protection whatsoever. I experienced severe pain in my chest and right breast from where the seat belt locked. This pain lasted for 6 weeks. If the airbag had worked properly, it would have cushioned the impact and likely made it possible to lessen the need for the seatbelt to do all of the work. This must be fixed! (my vehicle was in motion on a city street when a person driving the opposite direction made a left turn in front of me and totaled my vehicle. I no longer have the car, but I have a photo of the defective airbag. ).

Takata recall I received a recall notice months ago (although letter was not dated making it more difficult for the customer to track lack of progress- hence date below is a guesstimate. The letter (attached) notified me that the passenger side air bag was defective and dangerous. The letter said that Toyota was seeking a remedy and in the meantime I should not use the front passenger side. I have heard nothing since. So I have effectively been denied full use of my car for months. This is not reasonable. My elderly mother is coming to live with me. I need use of the passenger seat. Is Toyota prepared to pay for a rental or offer some other compensation?.

Takata recall Toyota motor corporation USA sent me a notice falsely claiming that the parts to fix my passenger side airbag were in stock. I called the dealer on 5/1/2017 and told them I wanted to get this recall done. I told the dealer the model and year of my car. I was told to bring the car in. When I arrived at the dealer, I was told that they did not have a part in stock that was necessary to perform the recall repair. The dealer further stated that the part was on back order and they did not know when it would come in. I called the Toyota motor corp USA national hot line for the recall and asked when the part(s) would come in. The representative did not know. I was put on hold while the representative called the dealer. When the representative came back on the line, she stated the she spoke to the dealer and the dealer said the parts(s) order was not in stock at the place that they were submitting the order to and that he did not know when the part would be delivered to the dealer. Because of the above statements I believe that Toyota motor corporation knowingly sent out a recall notice stating that the parts were available when they were not in stock. I would like to request that an investigation be instigated to determine how many notices were sent out to vehicle owners saying that parts were available when their were either not enough parts in stock to fulfill the notices that were sent out and or the parts were not in stock at the time the notice was sent.
Letter from congresswoman capps on behalf of constituent re why efforts are focused on replacing the passenger side airbags first and not the driver side airbags which seems more relevant.

Takata recall passenger side air bag. Received notice in Jul;y 2016. It is now March 2017. Advised not to allow any passenger to ride in the front passenger seat. This is a terrible inconvenience. After 8 months Toyota should make the remedy a priority. This is unacceptable.
Takata recall 16v-340: I was notified by Toyota that my vehicle was subject to the takata airbag recall for passenger side airbags 3 months ago. The dealer indicated that a replacement part was not yet available and was unable to give me an estimated timeframe in which it would be available for replacement. I am concerned about the safety risk. The Toyota notification indicated that if I believe that the dealer or Toyota has failed or is unable to remedy the defect within a reasonable time frame, I may submit a complaint to NHTSA via this site, and so am doing so. Toyota is responsible for ensuring that vehicles meet safety standards and that when a safety concern is identified it is addressed in a timely and responsible manner. The manufacturer has failed in this regard. It is unreasonable to ask vehicle owners to operate the vehicle without a passenger in the front seat until the manufacturer can get around to fixing the problem.
Takata recall, last June 2016 Toyota let us know the passenger side air bag was a takata air bag but has done nothing to fix the problem. We called Toyota of orange 4 time seance we received the notice the last time we where told to get an attorney by the receptionist. If serious death or injury can be caused why doesn't Toyota of orange take the matter more seriously. Being told over and over there is no fix at this time, or as I said above " get an attorney". How dose Toyota motor sale called there notice important safety recall (interim notice) and there dealership dose not take the matter serious. This is important to me and my family, but not to Toyota motor sales or Toyota of orange.
Recall July 2015. Toyota did nothing said they'd be in touch, said "don't let anyone sit in the passenger seat" this is unacceptable. A man driving a Toyota was just killed when his passenger side air bag went off. I want Toyota to remove the airbag until they have a fix.
Toyota will not let dealerships disable these defective passenger side air bags. Honda recently went through the same thing and they did disable the airbags until the parts were available to fix them. I got a complete run around from Toyota's customer service when I called them and was told "it had to go through the state. " ridiculous. If it has to be coordinated through the state then Toyota should be responsible for that. Why should I be driving around in a car that can have shrapnel flying around in it? "don't let anybody sit right in front of it" is not an acceptable solution. Not to mention they have no idea how long it will be til the parts are available - and this recall went out in June but I am only just now being notified. So 2 mos. Passengers have been sitting on the deadly side. They should not be allowed to get away with this as a business practice - totally unacceptable to put people at risk this way. Please do something about this.
Toyota is recalling several models including mine for a defective passenger side airbag. Apparently metal can burst through the airbag if it is deployed causing injury or death. They sent me a letter stating they are working on getting the parts for repair but don't know when that may be. They suggested that nobody ride in the front passenger seat until it can be fixed by an undetermined date. Not a satisfactory solution in my opinion.
Tamara recall called Toyota corporate office 12/8/15 to inquire why my local dealer is unable to get parts and local Honda dealership keeps calling me to bring in a car I no longer own and emphasized the urgency of this issue. I have not been able to transport passengers since July. Toyota corp told me I could have a loaner then told me I could not. Case # 1512080106. Corporate office suggested I disengage passenger side airbag. Dealership says it's illegal. Dealership showed me last printout they received stating parts should have arrived October 2015 (just a projection) I am very nervous driving this car reports state scrap metal can be projected throughout the interior of car. I don't feel Toyota corp is responding to this defect within a reasonable time. How is it possible Honda has been handling the issue in my area for months, and Toyota won't give any indication as to when this will be resolved.
Takata recall. My vehicle became part of the recall in mid-June 2015. It has now been five months and I am still unable to put a passenger in the front seat of my car. I went to Toyota's website and my vehicle is not yet even on the schedule. Can I expect some compensation from Toyota and/or takata for this continuing inconvenience? I had a similar issue with the driver side airbag on my 2001 Honda accord, and it was resolved in less than a month.
"takata recall" received interim notice approx may 2015 received remidy notice may 2016 purchased car new and have contacted Toyota of invergrove heights mn. Several times about recall repair, only to be told no parts available! I am afraid of liability and or death from deployed air bags to both driver & passenger. Also paid option for additional side air bag package. When can we expect resolve and why is my life and passengers of less value than those in priority states? why are no fines to takata or the vehicle manufacturers being initiated? we owners feel as life and limb & vehicle valuation are at risk. It seems volkswagon diesel owners are receiving preferential attention and possible buy backs, while not as risk of the same exposure. Takata industries may go bankrupt or totally fail with no resolve from them or auto manufacturers. Leaving the vehicle owners open to death, injury, lawsuits and financial loss of vehicle value. Please help! please help!.
While stopped at a red light, the driver side airbag in my 2003 Toyota Matrix deployed striking me in the head/chest area. Stunned and disoriented, I didn't realize what had happened until a good samaritan helped me out of the car. She was telling me to exit the car, however, my seatbelt had retracted and locked with such tension, that I was barely able to reach across and press the release button. After the driver side airbag deployed the passenger airbag deployed as well, causing damage to the windshield. There was one or two subsequent explosions - I am unsure what those noises were. I was able to put the car in park and exit the vehicle. A police officer was nearby and heard the explosion and came over to check on the situation. He tried turning the car off, but the horn was stuck and continued to honk - he then decided to turn the vehicle back on, which stopped the honking of the horn. The car was still able to be driven and an officer drove the car across the street to a local Toyota dealership. My car still sits in the lot where Toyota has performed inspections, diagnostic tests, downloaded data and compiled a report (of which I have not received a copy of) that has been sent to Toyota legal. Ironically, I received a recall in the mail one week after the incident for an srs / ecu recall.
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that the recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 14v350000 (air bag system) was received in September of 2014. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the front passenger side air bag was deactivated. The contact was informed that the parts needed to remedy the vehicle were not available and no estimated time for receiving the parts could be given. The manufacturer was not notified in reference to the delay. The contact had not experienced a failure.
Passenger side airbag deployed without warning. Three blocks from our home on a neighborhood going 20 to 25 mph. We took to our Toyota dealer ( jim norton ) in oklahoma city. He said we had to file a claim with Toyota and gave us a number. We found out later that day there was a recall on the airbag system and we had not received a notice in the mail. He did not inform us there was a recall on the vehicle even though Toyota's website showed the car was part of the recall. We had the car towed to another dealer, bob howard of oklahoma city. They did knowledge the vehicle was indeed part of the recall. Bob howard Toyota still has the car and we have a case number 1306080358 with Toyota and bob howard is waiting of their call to start work on the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag cover became sticky and soft. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The results of the diagnostic were unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 30,000.
While driving a 2010 Matrix, Tuesday oct. 19,2010, approx. 30mphs. The car made a clicking sound as if a cruise control had been set but this car doesn't have cruise control. The car then took off a very high speed like a jet plane at take off. I was unable to control the brakes or steering. The vehicle travel approx. A half of a mile before hitting an embankment and then jumping out of the ditch and back onto the highway where it landed and stopped. The car is suppose to be equipped with six air bags but none of them deployed upon impact.

While I was sitting at a drive thru window at mcdonald's the teller was reaching me my order and all of a sudden she and I heard a loud popping sound she said what was that, I said I don't know she said it came from your car she said madam it came from inside your car, your car is smoking so I turned my head and noticed the seat belt over my shoulder was smoking and as I turned my head around the seat belt on the passenger side of the car popped open and it started smoking so I said what is going on with this car, and when I turned my head forward the airbag on the passenger side popped out so I said I don't know what is happening with this car but I need to get out of it. I noticed that there were cars behind me in the drive-thru so I pulled the car out from under the window to the middle of the parking lot so that the cars behind me would be able to get out and as I turned the wheel the driver side air bag popped out in from of me and hit me in the chest and bruised my left arm then the car started filling up with smoke so I didn't know if the car was catching on fire or what I just knew that I needed to get out of the car. I turned off the engine in the middle of the parking lot grabbed my purse and jumped out of the car. All the customers and workers at mcdonald's ran out when the car started smoking and no one could believe what was happening because all these things popped out and there was no other car there the manager at mcdonald's came to me and said he was calling the fire department since the car was smoking and we didn't know what was going to happen next. The fire dept. Came and said madam what happened I told them what happened and they asked if I had hit anything and I told them no I was just sitting at the drive-thru when all of these things just started popping out of my car. The windshield also shattered when the airbag hit it. The firemen told me to stand in front of mcdonald's and they opened the hood to check for fire and disabled to battery.
I was traveling at eastbound at 25 mph and entered a controlled intersection in manitowoc, wisconsin. A motorcyclist traveling northbound approaching speeds of 60 mph ran a yield sign and t-boned my 2009 Toyota Matrix s 5 spd manual in the back passenger door and back quarter panel. The force of the impact spun my Matrix 180 degrees so I ended up facing westbound at the curb. The passenger-side curtain airbag deployed. However, the driver's side curtain airbag failed to deploy and I ended up with a mild head injury and a sprain/possible dislocation of my left shoulder from where I struck the inside of the vehicle. My concern is why the driver's side airbag curtain failed to deploy when I was t-boned by a motorcycle at 60 mph turning my car 180 degrees to face the opposite direction I was traveling. In my opinion, based on the impact, my side curtain air bags should have deployed as the direction and force of the impact would obviously force my body in the same direction, north, into the side of my car; the same direction the motorcycle was headed. The failure of my driver's side curtain airbag deployment led to a head injury and a shoulder injury; possibly a dislocation of my shoulder. I am awaiting the radiologists review of the x-rays taken today at aurora health care center on reed avenue in manitowoc, wisconsin. Toyota should take my concerns seriously and investigate the air bag systems in their 2009 Matrix models.
