39 Equipment problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/18/2025

The hydraulic break pump system failed, causing my brakes to go out for a minimum of 10 seconds while I was driving. It put me and my passenger at risk for collision until they abruptly came back on but weren’t working well. The vehicle has been inspected by Toyota itself, and there were no warning lights until the system itself failed.

42 Equipment problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/05/2025

When I am coming to a stop or need to put on my brakes my car will accelerate at a jump ahead pace as if to take off instead of slowing down and stopping. Regardless whether I’m turning a corner or I’m continuing straight when I have to put on the brakes it speeds up instead.

43 Equipment problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/31/2025

While driving at a high speed in the left lane of a 2 lane interstate a car in the right lane merged into me. Luckily I was able to brake in time to avoid a collision, unfortunately the sudden braking at a high speed caused my car to loose all control. Upon braking my front tires lost all traction and shifted my car to the right, I remained horizontal sliding across the highway for an unrecognized distance (my guess is 10-20 meters), before shifting another 90 degrees to the right leaving me backwards. At this point I had shifted across both lanes and the emergency lane, I was backwards in a grass border on the right side of the interstate. If this had been any other sort of barrier I may not have lived. This incident has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle had recently had its worn brake components replaced in response to a similar incident happening, which I first attributed to worn brakes— this theory was supported by the brake technician prior to service. I have had a tire pressure light on since I purchased the car, but this was explained to me as a malfunctioned tps.

44 Equipment problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/30/2025

Brakes failing while driving in the rain. I was unable to use my brakes in the rain and headlights turned off while driving too. Took it to the dealer and they won't do anything unless lights are on on dashboard to read the code.

45 Equipment problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/29/2025

In less than 30 days after having bought the car, the brake booster system went out and the dealer is requesting I pay despite this being apart of the massive Prius recall.

46 Equipment problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/22/2025

My small battery died and it is located on passenger side, inside, underneath tail light. There us no key entry. One must crawl to back if car and dismantle many pieces to access release. I had heavy 5 gallon jugs of water in back. There is no trunk release and no key entry. The only way to jump car is at fuse box under hood. Car needs a button inside, ideally up front.

47 Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

The dashboard of the car fades in and out randomly. Sometimes the dashboard doesn't come on at all. And when it does come on, it appears the mileage may have not increased even though the vehicle has been in use. This means that when the dashboard is off the driver is guessing at speed of the vehicle and at the fuel.

48 Equipment problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/11/2024

The contact owns a 2013 Toyota Prius v. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph in stop-and-go traffic and applying the brake pedal to decrease in speed the vehicle failed to decrease in speed immediately. The contact had to apply an excessive amount of pressure for the vehicle to decrease in speed. The slip indicator light, brake system failure, and anti-lock brake failure warning lights are illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who informed the contact that code c1391 which showed on the diagnostic machine. The dealer stated the brake booster pump needed to be replaced. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to the customer support program 20te07 with the NHTSA id number 10184564 (service brakes, equipment, equipment adaptive/mobility). The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the warranty coverage was associated with the customer support program. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to file a safety complaint. The failure mileage was 79,000.

49 Equipment problem of the 2023 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/30/2024

Immediately after servicing the vehicle, when I closed the rear hatch, I noticed a crack in the plastic trim under the window. It is still available for inspection as the dealership has not yet repaired it. The piece is not entirely cracked through or enitrely loose at this time, but could it fall off and cause a road obstacle? the dealership has confirmed it is a probable warranty issue and I was told that Toyota is aware. The crack and loose trim is on a nearly new vehicle and happened without cause on my behalf and I noticed it immediately after servicing at my dealership on October 30th, 2024 - unknown. In looking online, this seems to be a common problem with the 2023 Toyota Prius.

51 Equipment problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/30/2024

Heading westbound on I-70, taking exit 29 off ramp from highway, I drove over uneven pavement. My traction control, abs and brake lights illuminated, the brakes suddenly felt mushy. As I approached the stoplight at the end of the exit ramp, I questioned whether I would be able to stop. Scared me immensely. Luckily no cars were near me. I now do not have abs, traction control, stability control or regenerative braking.

54 Equipment problem of the 2024 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/08/2024

We are writing about 2 separate issues we had with our 2024 Prius. 1. Acceleration caused accident on sept. 8, 2024. Driver was parallel parking. He backed into the space and was then going to straighten out the car. The car accelerated unexpectedly and caused the vehicle to go up on someone’s lawn. The vehicle was stopped by the stoop of the house. The airbag was deployed. Thank god the driver was unharmed. He was parking and going under 5 miles an hour in reverse and then in drive to finish parking. The car just flew out of control. 2. Sudden braking when backing out of driveway or parking space. This happened a total of 4 times, twice to both drivers. Driver was backing out of the garage looking at the screen to make sure nothing was there. She was inching out when the car braked suddenly and forcefully by itself. It was so strong a brake that it felt like something was hit, but nothing was there. This happened again when backing slowly out of a parking space in a lot. Coincidentally, we had an appointment with Toyota to bring the car in for a recall 2 days after the above accident. The recall was for a door problem. We had planned to tell them about the brake issue at that time, but obviously, we never got to bring the car in. Both these issues with the Toyota 2024 Prius are frightening and dangerous. This time no one was hurt. We have informed Toyota about these problems and hope that you and them address these issues in order to prevent this from happening to others. Our insurance company is repairing the vehicle. We have to say that when it is returned to us, we will be frightened to drive it unless these problems are taken care of.

55 Equipment problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/30/2024

As I was driving, my breaks suddenly became spongey and unresponsive. I could hear a "hiss" sound come from below me. Abs and other warning lights came on on my dash. As I was near my auto mechanic I tried to make it there safely, and as I drove the brakes seemed to become softer and softer. By the time I had reached my mechanic I was so uncomfortable with its ineffectivness I felt it necessary to use the emergency brake to come to a complete stop. My mechanic confirmed that the issues included the failing of the brake booster, brake master cylinder, accumulator pump, abs, abs computer. According to him this was caused by a set of issues involving internal leaks in the brake booster assembly. These issues were replicatable, and my mechanic says they pose a saftey risk. Even after he gave it a "temporary patch job. " due to this the only times it has been driven were to get it home, to move it along our street so as to not get ticketed for having a stationary vehicle too many days in a row, and one time it was taken up the nearest rise in preparation for a tsunami warning. When looking for replacment parts, my mechanic allerted me to a technical service bulletin that should have been sent out to owners warning them of this issue and offering replacment parts. I never received this notice as I am the second owner of this vehicle, the notices were sent before I owned it, the previous owner claims not to have been aware of this issue herself, and because it was a voluntary service call, when researching the vehicle myself for any reported issues such as recalls, none had come up, meaning I had no way of knowing. To add to this, I contacted Toyota to see if they would honor the past offer to service this issue, but Toyota refuses to replace the parts now as it is too far past the voluntary service dates they set.

56 Equipment problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/22/2024

The car suddenly threw a c1391 code yesterday with no previous warning. The traction, parking brake, brake system, and abs lights are all lit on the dashboard. As this vehicle is my daily commuting vehicle, I must have the costly repairs performed, which are estimated at roughly $2,400. I will ask to retain the parts for inspection. The brakes are softer, and the breaking distance required has increased by approximately fifteen feet.

57 Equipment problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/08/2024

The clear coat on the roof of my 2015 Prius began to peel little by little starting around 2021. What started out as small patches has now become large patches on various parts of the roof. The clearcoat is also beginning to peel right below the windows on the passenger side, close to where the door panel and the window meet. It's unsightly and I have not had this happen to any of my other vehicles in the past. I've done nothing different in the handling/washing/parking of the vehicle compared to my previous cars.

58 Equipment problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/21/2024

While driving the speed limit of 70mph on a major highway, the sunroof on my 2017 Toyota Prius exploded. There was no warning of any kind: no other traffic nearby so no rock or debris from another vehicle; no overpass or bridge so nothing from above; it was a mild sunny day of 76 degrees so not a weather factor; and by the angle of the glass that remains being in an outward position rather than inward, reveals to me that it was from inside out, not from outside in as if it were a rock hitting. It just exploded. I was the only person in the car. Thankfully, the visor was shut on it or the shattered glass would have caused injury and of greater serious concern is just the sudden sound of what sounded like a bomb going off over my head was enough to cause a reaction which easily would result in an accident. It was a terrifying experience! I was lucky no other vehicles were nearby and could react and safely get off the road. I called 911 immediately and reported it. I have read many such claims from other Toyota owners online (see Toyotanation. Com and search by "exploding sunroof") and even from a technician at my nearby Toyota collision center that it just happened to a friend of theirs also. This is not a one time issue. When I took the car to the collision center for an estimate and inquired about the damage, they could find no recall on it by Toyota. This is certainly a dangerous and hazardous issue that needs to be addressed ASAP before someone is seriously hurt or there is a fatality.

59 Equipment problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/21/2024

While driving car completely shut off in middle of road. Would not turn back on. Had car towed still will not start.

60 Equipment problem of the 2020 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/16/2024

About a year ago and again a few days ago, I was slowly moving my Prius forward when suddenly it accelerated at full speed. The first time I was pulling into a parking spot beyond which was a grassy area and then a stockade fence. When I felt the car lurch forward, I slammed on the brakes, but was still going quite fast. Fortunately, the collision avoidance brakes kicked in and stopped the car just before I hit the fence. In the second case, I was slowly pulling into a parking lot when again the car surged forward. This time I was able to stop the motion with the brakes myself . In both cases I was conscious of moving my foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal. In both cases it was a hot summer day, near 90.

61 Equipment problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/15/2024

I contacted Toyota about the peeling paint on my car. The Toyota representative told me to file a complaint with your agency. The paint is peeling on the roof of my car. There are many similar cars with the same problem. Toyota is unresponsive.

63 Equipment problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/01/2024

In the 2009 Toyota series ii vehicle there are two parts for the brake actuator pump assembly which has been cycling about every 20 seconds for the past six months or more. There is an intermittent tone when depressing the brake pedal before starting the car (engine off). The brake dash warning light is on continuously. Occasional loss of brake power in reverse causing the driver to re-apply the brakes to stop unwanted motion of the vehicle.

64 Equipment problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/11/2024

Driving yesterday on residential street, I gently applied my brakes to stop for a red light. The brakes did not stop the car; pumping the brakes did not help. Dashboard illuminated skidding car diagram, and brake light went on. I took my foot off the gas, rode somewhat on the shoulder, and slowly found a place to park the car. Had to have it towed. No prior warning that the brakes would fail. Dealership advised it was a leak in the brake booster pump or actuator. Later learned that there had been a class action lawsuit dealing with this issue. Also that Toyota had extended the warranty when this happened frequently. I never got a recall notice about this. My car is a 2011 Prius with 59,000 miles. The extended warranty only went to 10 years, and mine is 11 years old, but I haven't seen anyone else in the chat boxes who had such a low mileage as mine. Thankfully neither I nor anyone was injured. But this is definitely a major safety issue and a very expensive repair. Over $3,000. What recourse do I have?.

65 Equipment problem of the 2023 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

There are no air vents or air flow to the rear seats. Passengers will overheat in the summer with no relief and I have no idea how this even made it on the market without vents to seats.

66 Equipment problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/29/2024

I had just dropped off my daughters at school. On my drive back home, this trip is roughly an 8 mile round trip distance . I heard (then saw) an explosion coming from the rear passenger side of the car. I noticed flames and proceeded to steer the car (car shutdown) towards a side street. Shortly after I was able to put car in park, making sure that it was out of any potential danger to others. I quickly jumped out of my car. This followed by a loss of fluids under the hood and smoke. After everything subsided I called a tow truck and had it towed to my home. It has been parked outside and I am so discombobulated about this whole incident that I do not know how/where to even began with the next step. I have no clue how this happened but what I do know is that by no means should a vehicle ever create a fire .

67 Equipment problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/23/2024

My car accelerated significantly on its own while I was pulling into a parking stall in a private parking lot. It caused my vehicle to jump a curb and accelerate up a dirt divider and push over a bush that was planted in the dirt divider. Depressing my brakes did not decelerate the car, so I pressed the park button to eventually stop the vehicle. I’m not sure what speed it was traveling when it accelerated, but I could smell burning rubber at the end of the incident. I’m not sure when the smell first occurred.

68 Equipment problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/22/2024

Parts failed: accumulator/brake actuator and brake pump 5/21/I dropped off my car at the coggin Toyota dealer in jacksonville, FL to replace all (4) brake pads 5/22/I picked up my car during lunch and their multipoint inspection passed with no issues 5/23/maintenance lights came on the dash during lunch, brakes were not responsive, and my car was beeping non-stop. I dropped off my car to coggin Toyota to check the issue. They estimated $2722. 81 before tax to replace brake actuator and brake pump because there is an internal leak in the brake actuator. 5/24/the Toyota advisor stated that my car did not qualify for their extended warranty to replace the parts. He also stated that if I pay for the repairs, they will only cover the parts for up to 12k miles or 1 year.

69 Equipment problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

2014 Toyota Prius: while driving at high speed the engine stalled unexpectedly, steering and braking were not effected. Was able to safely coast to a stop in the breakdown lane and after a few minutes, restart the engine and proceed driving. Another event occurred on the entrance ramp onto an interstate highway. I was able to pull over safely and the car restarted after a short delay. This seems to be a very dangerous condition. Toyota dealer service said they could not determine the cause and they know of no recall. I found online a reference to NHTSA recall # 20v369000 that referred to "unexpected hybrid power system shut down. " that is what happened to me.

70 Equipment problem of the 2019 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

Body of car has rust perforation starting from the inside working out. This is on the roof, so water incursion will effect airbags and electrical system. First noticed rust bubbles a few years ago, but did not think much of it. Now two body shops have said roof panel needs to be replaced. This is big stuff!.
