Toyota RAV4 owners have reported 10 problems related to adaptive equipment (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota RAV4 based on all problems reported for the RAV4.
I had been using the adaptive cruise control at highway speed on the westbound CA 134 in glendale/burbank, CA. I had to merge into traffic from the hov lane disengaging the cruise control. I then used the auto transmission to shift to a lower gear to gain more torque in changing lanes when the car went into a stall and lost all power. Consequently we were rear-ended by another car. Our car went into a lockout and had to be pushed to the shoulder by the California highway patrol. I don't know if this was a random event or a glitch in the on-board computer. Or something else totally unrelated.

Started my 2016 Rav4 limited on 7/27/2019. After starting it none of the safety features are working. This appears to be a known issue among other Toyota owners. The vehicle was fine when I shut it off the night before. Now anti lock braking, lane departure alert, pre-collision system, and adaptive cruise control are all failing.

I was trying to close the hatch which is too hard to pull down for a normal person and I got it about a foot to be able to close it and my hand slipped off the gate and the gate flew back up and knocked my left ear, head and glasses so hard it cut my ear and head and my ear was swollen and bruised in which the ear is still bruised and I have a scar where the cut is on my ear. I was unable to sleep or put any pressure at all on that side of my head.

Driver's side sun visor failure to work properly causing a safety issue and possible bodily injury or death. The sun visor is not staying in the stowed position which is flat against the interior roof of the car due to a known failed mechanism within the sun visor such as the spring loaded mechanism which is failing. Instead, the sun visor is dropping down at a 45 degree angle. This has caused my head to hit it several times while entering the vehicle. And, if involved in a head on collision, this could cause the sun visor to slice through my neck because it is at a 45 degree angle going across my neck since it will not stay up due to the failed spring mechanism within the sun visor. Again, this could result in death or bodily injury if it is not taken care of. After research of my own, I have found and been told by reliable sources in the Toyota industry that this is a known problem and that I am not the only one having this problem with the failure of the driver's side sun visor and possibly the passenger side as well over time. I have been told by a Toyota representative at Toyota headquarters that this part is only covered by a 3 1/2 year warranty instead of the same warranty as the car. This tells me that Toyota may know that this part will fail over time. All other vehicles I have owned with manual sun visors have never failed for the life of the car since they do not have internal parts like the Toyota model has. I have been told by my local Toyota dealership that I have to pay about $85 to have it replaced when this is a safety issue and it should not fail. It's not a moving part within the engine.

I purchased the 2013 Rav4 limited with navigation and a blind spot monitor, however I do not believe the monitor works correctly, it does not give any indication that something (another vehicle) is approaching until the vehicle is at the side door of my vehicle, way too late to make an adjustment to your changing lanes. I have had it back to my Toyota dealers two times, on the first visit the car was in for a 6 month check up and I said something about it at the time, but nothing shows on my visit that it was checked so I assumed that it was corrected. After that visit I realized that the blind spot monitor was still not working, so on my one year inspection and check up I specifically asked for the blind spot monitor to be checked again. This time when I got my bill for the pennsylvania emissions test I noted the blind sport monitor was not part of my repair bill, so I questioned the service rep, who explained there was no adjustment for this part. I went to the sales manager about it and she said she would have Toyota contact me. When I was not contacted by Toyota I sent a email to Toyota owners web site and made a compliant, they responded that I should take it back to the Toyota dealer and tell them I need an adjustment on the blind spot monitor, which I did, when I returned to pick up my Rav4 I was told they could not find any problem and there was nothing could be done. My compliant is if it is not adjustable then it is a safety issue that should be looked into. Thank you.

The drivers side visor does not stay up. . At first it was slightly loose around 50k miles and then 70k the visor no longer stays up at all. I have actually hit my head on it a couple of times and it obscures my vision. I cannot believe this has not been recalled. Now I have to pay $100 to buy a completely new one. This is just an accident and a lawsuit waiting to happen. It looks to be a problem for a lot of Toyotas. My fiance cant even drive it right now because he is taller than I am and cannot see out of it properly. Please recall this so it doesnt cause a tragedy at some point.
The navigation screen is totally unuseable in daylight. Screen is flat and exposed to sun. Driver has to lean way over and hold right hand over the screen to get any visibility at all. Even then it's too difficult to see, not to mention the danger of leaning over, using the right hand to screen, and staring at the screen rather than the road. Terrible terrible design. Toyota will not address the problem. $1500 mistake for anyone who purchased this add-on.
Check engine oil light came on; went o dealer to have checked; lost 3 quarts of oil since last schedules oil change. Dealer says it was within their acceptable range. Today called and said I need new engine which they say will cost me thousands.

I was driving down forest Ave in brockton, MA, the driver side door stated smoking, I quickly turned the engine off, got me and my son out of the car and called the fire department who disconnected the battery and sugested that I got it towed to a repair shop. So I did, to copland toyoyta where it was troubleshot to a master switch ass. It was repaired and I had to pay $580. 70 because they said its not covered by warranty.
Vehicle was recalled by Toyota to have accelerator pedal modified and floor mats changed in order to avoid inadvertent acceleration. Floor mat change applied only to original Toyota supplied floor mats, which above vehicle has, at least according to accessory window sticker supplied at purchase. When vehicle was taken to ourisman Toyota for compliance, dealer marked on customer yellow form that mats were not original Toyota and that they would not be changed. However dealer stated verbally that mats actually were original Toyota, but that customers were not happy with new mats since they were too thin. Therefore dealer decided to comply with safety directive by marking all original mats as non-original mats, which did not have to be changed. Nice to know that the dealer is customer oriented, but I am left wondering if that jeopardizes safety. Incident was reported to Toyota on the safety email address listed on their web site, but no reply received.
