Toyota RAV4 owners have reported 31 problems related to radio/tape cd player (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota RAV4 based on all problems reported for the RAV4.
The central entertainment touch screen /display has not been working at all. Carplay and charging does not work at all as display is not working. Speaker settings as well as gas mileage info can not be accessed as it displays not working or not responsive. I triedto check with Toyota dealership here in louisiana and they are saying that it is outside warranty and have to pay 1500 dollars to change the radio and the display completely. To me personally it looks like a software issue rather than a hardware problem. Hope it has a simple fix. Please investigate this issue so that other driver's do not encounter this problem while driving and get into a life-threatening accident. Appreciate your help.

I've had multiple issues with this car. The lock actuators on all the doors and rear hatch constantly break, the radio completely stopped working and a new after market radio had to be installed since Toyota won't recall the radios, the ac blower motor keeps shorting out, and the usb ports short out and stop working.

This is a specific concern for the battery/electric system that appears to be very prevalent. . In the 3 months since buying my 2020 Toyota Rav4 limited hybrid (June 20, 2020)-I've had to have my car jumped twice due to a dead battery. At first, I thought there might be something I was not doing correctly. However, after reading the comments on several sites it appears that this is a very common issue. The car had been driven the day before each time and would not start the next morning. The service person who came out to jump it the second time said that he gets a lot of calls for these new cars. The second time it also lost my parking assist on the backup camera along with the last radio setting. Unfortunately- taking it to the dealer has not worked for most of the owners. The dealer can find nothing wrong or even locate the issue. . Read more...

The radio screen only displays the Toyota sign. It will change stations with the pre set on the steering wheel but you can not do anything else cuz the screen does not display anything other than the Toyota sign.
Radio will completely stop working to where you have to buy a new $1200 radio from the dealer. All door lock actuators will stop working after a period of time causing you to not being able to unlock or open your doors.
Rav4 hybrid limited with navigation. The navigation control [maps / radio / volume control] freezes suddenly and screen is not manageable until the car stops, engine turned off and back on. One time, radio was loud, and could not turn it down as the screen was frozen. Has happened about once every two weeks.
The contact owns a 2014 Toyota Rav4. While operating the vehicle, the navigation/information system suddenly malfunctioned. The screen turned a blue color and the system became inoperable. Screen keeps attempting to reload but it fails. Radio or navigation inoperable but the rear view camera does work. Occurred at 60,000 miles.
Radio in my 2014 Rav4 won't turn on or off. The screen looks like it is trying to reboot but gets to a certain point then stops and starts again. It creates safety issues as it divert driver eyes what happen and have to use cell phone while driving to check road conditions. It prevents drivers from up to date traffic conditions and car condition. Everything used to display in radio screen.
Not soon after I leased my Rav4 the brakes started grinding as if I needed new brakes & everytime I went in for maintenance they said nothing is wrong with them & they look fine. The rotors are rusted just on the inner part on both rear rotors & my car is garaged so there isnt any reason why they should be grinding or squealing. It makes the noise when I'm in motion. Also the radio stations are complete static & I have had 2 different Toyota dealers look at it & they say nothing is wrong with the wiring but can't figure out why all my stations come in statically.

I had to visit Toyota because my radio will turn on by itself, when I park. Even after visiting Toyota for an update, my radio will change on its own, not from the steering wheel) but on its own. So it is not fixed. Wipers will turn on then stop. There seems to be a device behind the dash that I can hear clicking on and off well after the ignition is off or while the car is idle for a bit. My climate control changes on its on even though it works fine most of the time. It is as if my car is receiving additional commands from another source. Last week, at night, I witnessed two men standing in the middle of the street, somehow activating car alarms from random cars. Just yesterday, not far from where I live a driver "lost control" and ran into two homes. The driver was thrown from the car, while the car and the house caught on fire, that was strange to hear about. If there is something that can be done for my car, please let me know what to do. Thank you.

All the apps on the dash board, including radio are gone{whited out}. I am afraid if everything is shuting down all at once while I drive as it did on this one.
The line departure alert / steering assist buzzer is not working or not loud enough to be heard. Occasionally when driving for hours on freeways I may get drowsy, so I bought the new Rav4 and specifically chose a model with lda/sa hoping that it assists me. After driving over 1000 miles between the cities, I am completely disappointed with this feature. It supposed to alert me when the car drives over the lines with a buzzer and gentle nudge to the steering wheel. I cannot hear the buzzer and feel any action on the steering wheel. I went to the culver city Toyota dealer two times in attempting to have this problem fixed. Both times I have been told that the system works as designed. During a test drive with the master technician, with radio off, at speed less 50mph, so with the minimal road noise, I could not hear the buzzer. I do clearly hear the buzzer of the parking sonar or pre-collision warning. So this is at best useless feature, at worst it is a distraction when trying to make it work at a highway.
The radio/infotainment system on these vehicles are failing (ours failed last week), with numerous examples posted by owners online. A dealership eventually determined that the entire radio unit needed replacement at quoted cost of $1160 Toyota customer support is courteous but unwilling to assist with repairs. The radio system appears to enter a boot loop where a loading type screen appears for several seconds followed by the screen turning off for a time before restarting the loop. While I wouldn't consider the radio/infotainment to be a critical safety component, this constant on/off of the radio screen is a distraction for the driver. At night especially, the change in brightness from screen off to screen on lights up the entire cabin. Furthermore, the boot loop cannot be stopped- no buttons work and the sequence repeats itself forever as long as the key is on.
When I had my car in park my stereo stopped working. No radio, no satellite, no nothing other than back up camera. When I start the car I get a blue picture of the stereo and a status bar loading like on computers when a program is loading. I took the car to the Toyota dealer and he explained that the replacement would cost 2,500 dollars to replace and he explained there was no means to fix it. I went to another mechanic and he told me the same thing. I have had the car for only 1 year and 6 months with 45000 miles and it just suddenly stopped working. I believe there is a defect in these radios that cause this endless loop to occur. Many others have experienced similar problems with the same model of car as well.
Radio navigation quit working at 52000 miles. Its constantly rebooting. Dealer says need new radio which will cost about $1200. 00.
My car radio went on a loading screen loop, and now is stuck on a loading screen . I went to dealer to fix it or upload new software but they sad that radio would not take. I can't use cell heands free.
Radio navigation quit working after battery replacement. It is constantly rebooting. Dealer says need new radio which will cost about $1200. 00. Cannot use bluetooth, hands-free, cd player, or radio. Toyota will not replace even though many others have same issue because it is not a safety issue.
Issue first started when battery had to be jumped. Then a few days later when in motion driving to the bank, the radio started acting up and got stuck on station and song and then just went black then a picture of the radio appeared the on the screen and was attempting to update but would go black again and then start over so was stuck in some kind of reboot. Not sure if electrical problem or what so took it in to dealership and they told me I should only have to pay $50-60 to reboot it. They checked the battery and said the battery was low charge and replaced it at no charge but said they were unable to reboot the system because it would not stay up long enough before it would black out again. Since it was barely past the warranty period Toyota would not cover the system and I would have to pay $1000 to have refurbished system installed. After researching online I found this was a common complaint and found one here at this site as well so adding mine. I sent letters and emails to Toyota to stand behind their long time customers and products but they would not budge. Multimedia systems should not fail after 3 years. I call that a defect but I guess because it is not considered a safety issue it is not important to Toyota. We are a Toyota family and have been driving Toyota's since my first car back in the 70's. I will probably go ahead and replace with refurbished system hoping this is not an electrical issue and repeat but I will certainly reconsider before purchasing another Toyota in the future.
I have a Toyota Rav4 2014 xle awd. The radio system went out showing a picture on the screen of the radio and what seemed to be a rebooting of the system constantly. The usb port is also shorting out. To note what I was doing, I was turning the car on in my garage to leave and run errands for the day. This all happened on the same day. I only use the system for cd playing, radio playing, and occasionally navigation. When I called the dealership the first response was I would have to pay $98 each for a system check on both problems. Also, I gave the VIN number to the Toyota service rep and he stated there was an update available at no cost to me. I dropped the car off and the rep called me and said he made a mistake; there was no update and the radio is not working at all. The cost would be $1200. He wanted to know how many miles I had on the car and if bought it new, which I did buy it new at his dealership. I researched this problem with other Rav4 vehicles with same year. Also, other Toyota vehicles with same type radio system and there is a problem with all of them doing the same thing mine is doing. I feel a vehicle that is only 3 years old should not be having this type of issue and it should be fixed with an upgrade, not the fact the radio is broken as well as usb port not working. I take care of my car. It still looks new! I have owned Toyota vehicles since I was 16 and I am now 54. I am very disappointed with the fact the type of radio most of the newer Toyotas have installed are having this issue and Toyota is not addressing it as they should. I know this is not a safety issue, but I feel it is an issue that needs to be addressed by Toyota as I feel there is clearly a problem.
2017 Toyota rav 4 has lane departure warning, audible sound. It is to muted to hear, even if the radio is off. Second rav 4. My 2015 Rav4 lane departure was loud. Toyota states that they can't increase the volume. This to me, is a safety defect that needs to be corrected. No recourse was offered by Toyota on my leased vehicle. Bottom line, if I accidentally cross over a white line I get a low almost muted sound, which if I have the radio on I can not hear. Toyota needs to go back to the technology that they used for this on the 2015 model, to make it actually work!.
My Rav4 2014 xle radio/blue tooth stopped working about 3 yrs ago. I called Toyota, but they refuse to fix. The radio screen is blue , and keep rebooting. It was only 3 yrs old and we are taking care of the car very good. It cost 1500 to replace a new one, but I think it's not customer fault, and I'm still driving without the radio. I feel that it's not customer fault and Toyota may get the defect radio to install in the car. I did research and see lots of costomer has same issue. I see there is few recalls for Rav4 2014, but I never get a letter from Toyota to get the car fixed.
Hi I am writing about my 2014 Rav4 my mileage is 62,000. Prior to this car being 3 years old and 55,000 miles the radio shorted out including the bluetooth and navigation. I am shocked Toyota has not done a recall when it is evident this is a common defect. Browsing you tube shows many, many people have the same problem with their Toyota radio. After months of silence I ended up paying $1345. 41 to replace this upon reasearch seems to be a common known problem. My invoice #tocs231192 with dublin Toyota is dated 3/16/2017. I am asking for your review, consideration and response in this matter.
The light on the cruise control stalk blinks and it is very distracting at night while driving. Then the cruise control started dropping out while driving. No warning lights or codes were stored in the computer when checked by the dealer. The dealer replaced the cruise control switch, but the problem got worse. The engine started shutting off while driving on the highway with a total loss of electrical power and would take several minutes before it would restart due to no electrical power. The dealer then adjusted the switch on the brake pedal but it didn't help. The radio/navigation screen has since locked up and you have to restart the car to reset it. The engine will sometimes shut of for a few seconds and the restart on its own while driving. When this happens several warning lights stay on (abs, airbags, traction control & all wheel drive). The lights do not reset until the car is turned off and back on by the key. I have almost been involved in 3 accidents because of these problems. The car is now in the shop after contacting the manufacturer several times about the failure of the dealer to repair the car and that it is unsafe to drive. It is at a different dealership due to the selling dealers incompetence in their service department and management to address the problem. These problems have been going on for over 5 months and over a period of 15,000 miles and I do not believe it can be fixed and I do not believe the manufacturer is really trying to repair the car because of all the stalling they are currently doing at this time. I need your help.

Manufacturer: Toyota motor corporation vehicle identification no. (VIN): xxxxxxx. Bought a Toyota certified at dealership, (push button) however in six occasions, car engine would not turn on. Indicator light for steering was on. After several tries, and once I pulled the steering hard then car started fine. Took car to dealer to check it, they said nothing was wrong with car. The last time, the car did not start even with the Toyota road assistance staff/towing, was unable to get it out of garage, area was too low. Ended up leaving car at garage overnight. Next day, I returned the car, did a trade in for new Toyota. However, dealer or Toyota CO. Did not admit problems with car. Battery was functioning fine as everything else would turn on, ie, radio, ac . . Fan, lights.

My car has had every oil change and check up as prescribed. I was about 500 miles away from next required oil change. I noticed when I stepped on brake the oil light came on. Pulled into gas station and was told there was no oil in the car. They added 3 quarts of oil. I called Toyota and brought car in. They added 4/5 quarts of oil, and tapped up everything including dip stick so I could not check the oil. Told me I had to drive 1,100 to 1,300 miles and then come back. I was quite upset, because I was unable to know if oil was leaking again, since they taped the dip stick. Called corporate was told to take tape off dipstick. Have not driven the 1,100 miles but oil is a little below the 2 dots. I called Toyota, told them I had to be in raleigh for work and asked them to just fix the problem. They said I had 2 choices, delay my employment until I hit the 1,100 miles for a re check or leave for raleigh and if oil light comes on have car towed to Toyota. Really, I am 62 and traveling with 2 birds in the heat of the summer. They told me if I get to 1,100 miles and oil is low it does not mean they will fix the problem. They will add more oil so I can get to raligh and they will call Toyota to see if they will be responsible for repairs. Really? I have to leave for raleigh the 19th of may thanks.

Trying to use the 'hands free' feature of the bluetooth feature in the Rav4 Toyota, I ran into a curb trying to find a telephone number in the phone book. I had to purchase a new tire for over $200. And I just had the car for approx 2 or 3 days. I can't believe Toyota would even have a bluetooth feature that requires you to use the rotary tuner to find a telephone number. The salesperson told me to get a Smart phone and it may help, but it did not. The bluetooth in my Rav4 is almost useless! who would design or put into a car a feature that would almost insure accidents if used as designed? I thought I was getting a bluetooth that would allow voice commands. As it is, I can only use voice commands using my phone and only talk using bluetooth. -- some hands free feature!!! my 1999 camry had a better interface with my flip phone than my 2012 Rav4. I feel the feature was mis-represented. I have spent the last two years trying to get my samsung galaxy s3 to work with the Rav4 bluetooth. It is useless. I think Toyota should update the software or whatever is needed in my radio to get the hands-free feature more usable.
