Toyota RAV4 owners have reported 496 problems related to air bag (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota RAV4 based on all problems reported for the RAV4.
The recall repair was completed 7/15/25. It never updated in anyone’s system. I have been fighting between Toyota corp and the dealership for weeks more like a month just to get them to do the repair. After it was done I got my car damaged. A whole separate issue. I need to get inspection done on the car; can’t get it registered and my insurance is hassling me. It’s been weeks of this nightmare. It still shows my car on the recall list. Dmv says they didn’t receive updates, Toyota sends me to the dealership and the dealership does nothing. All this over a car problem that wasn’t my fault in the first place. How do I proceed please.

On may 1, 2025, my 2021 Toyota Rav4 hybrid displayed an srs airbag malfunction warning (recall 23ta15). The passenger airbag was disabled, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. Toyota had announced this recall in December 2023, but I never received any notification. When I contacted Toyota on may 9, 2025, I was told there were no parts available and was even offered a $200 paid inspection instead of a free recall repair. My vehicle remained at the dealership from may until September 29, 2025, without any available remedy. During this period, I continued paying my auto loan and insurance for a car I could not use. Toyota also failed to disclose my right to a free rental vehicle; I only received temporary rentals (camry, later tacoma) after repeated demands, and they did not meet my transportation needs. While the airbag recall was still unresolved, a second safety recall (25td01 – rear traction motor cable corrosion) was announced in mid-September 2025. This meant my vehicle had two active safety recalls at the same time while in Toyota’s custody. Both defects were only repaired at the end of September and early October 2025. Toyota failed to notify me in time, delayed the remedy for nearly two years after the recall announcement, concealed rental rights, and allowed my vehicle to remain unsafe under multiple recalls for months. An independent arbitrator has already issued a repurchase decision, confirming Toyota’s responsibility. This demonstrates a systemic failure by Toyota to comply with recall and safety obligations. ”.
This safety recall relate to airbag on front passenger seat may not deploy due to an accident. . Im really afraid the risk it have when invole in an accident. . . I try to call dealer to ask for repair but they say just wait because the remedy is not available. . . My car is on year 2020 but they still have not the part to get it fix yet. . . This is the priority safety matter.

Sudden surge and acceleration upon parking. I had brakes depressed pulling into a parking space when the vehicle felt like it jumped and quickly accelerated. It veered left missing the parked van in front of me but crashing into the parked Honda accord two spots over and one in front. It crashed into the back tire and fender area of the passenger side of the Honda pushing it completely out of its spot and sideways. My vehicle kept going even though pushing the brakes to stop. I had to force it into park to stop. The car’s air bags deployed but my Toyota’s airbags nor crash warning system worked.

The issue relates to the spiral cable assembly in my 2008 Toyota Rav4, which falls under safety recall 14v-168. According to the recall documentation, this part may fail, which could affect the vehicle’s safety features, including the airbag system. My vehicle is potentially affected by this recall, as it falls within the specified VIN range, but after contacting Toyota customer support, I was informed that my vehicle is not eligible for the recall, despite meeting the criteria outlined in the official recall notice. This inconsistency puts my safety at risk, as the failure of the spiral cable could lead to the malfunction of the airbag system. The problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, as I have not yet been able to have the issue inspected or repaired. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives at this time. There have been no warning lamps or messages related to this issue prior to my inquiry, as the recall issue was identified through the NHTSA database and Toyota’s recall records.

On April 4, 2025, my wife was driving at about 40 miles per hour when her vehicle struck an obstruction in the road. The impact caused relatively minor collision damage to the vehicle (a bent wheel strut). However the side curtain airbags deployed, startling my wife and limiting her vision on either side of the vehicle. Fortunately she was able maintain control of the vehicle, steer to a safe location and stop off the roadway. When inspected by the auto body repair shop where the vehicle is currently being repaired, the technicians were puzzled that the side airbags went off for such relatively minor accident, particularly since the impact to the vehicle had been to the front and not the sides. Under the circumstances, the premature deployment of the airbags could have actually made the accident worse if my wife had lost control of the vehicle. Under the circumstances, we felt compelled to report the incident to you for investigation in the event other Rav4 owners are experiencing the same problem.
The contact called on behalf of her daughter who owned a 2021 Toyota Rav4. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact stated that only her daughter was injured and she was seated in the drivers seat. Nobody outside of the vehicle was injured. The contacts daughter sustained injuries to her neck, shoulders, back, and head, medical treatment was needed for the injuries. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000.
Driving straight on side road. Vehicle entered road by attempting a left turn onto road without yielding to me. I swerved to the left and slammed on the breaks but was t boned by their vehicle. Airbags didn’t deploy and we got a message on dashboard indicating faulty airbag. Also upon impact our seatbelts were released.
After driving for 5-10 minutes, the center console screen stated: “a malfunction in the srs airbag system has been detected. Contact your dealer in order to have your vehicle inspected immediately” this continues to happen on subsequent trips. It only happens when somebody is actually sitting in the front passenger seat. There were no warning signs or symptoms prior to this message appearing. It makes me very concerned about passenger and driver safety and that the airbags may not deploy when needed.

Recall issued December 2023 with an estimated remedy available by Toyota in October 2024. As of February 2025, still no remedy available. I'm quite concerned at the length of time its taking to correct a simple OCS sensor. Should be as easy as just inspect and/or replace the sensor. My pregnant wife now has to sit in a seat where the airbag may or may not deploy in an accident for the unknown future since no remedy has been made.
My pregnant wife is parking her car at her work when she accidentally step on the gas pedal instead of the brakes. She panicked and she drove all the way to the wall. Airbags were not activated. 911 was dispatched. Police report made. Only minor injury finger fracture and chest bruise. There was a severe frontal damage to the car. Insurance deemed it totaled due to frame damage. I also complained to Toyota. They hired a software engineer to investigate. Just received official letter from Toyota there weee no defects in their safety system. The issues are the airbags not being deployed at the time of impact and pre collision auto braking non existent. The impact on the wall according to the people inside the nursing she works felt like an earthquake inside. But our main concern is the auto brake feature did not function. This accident could have been worse. Good thing seatbelt was not an inch lower from her chest preventing injury to our unborn child. The impact could have been worse if it was made of wood and could have injured other people in the nursing home. The auto brake feature should have worked because there were many obstacles at her front including first the bushes and eventually the wall. Their response letter is frustrating for us because they are claiming there were no problems in the car. But our concern is their safety system is not reliable compare to other car companies. Kia and Honda safety system is more reactive based from my driving experience. I think there are lapses in their system.
I have been experiencing water intrusion with my vehicle, I first noticed it by a mildew smell. Acknowledged under Toyota’s customer support program 22te05. This water leak has led to multiple secondary issues, including: interior water damage clogged a/c drainage system sunroof drainage issues I reported this issue to a Toyota, but they denied repairs under 22te05, claiming the issue was only due to a sunroof leak and clogged drains. [2/14] – took my car to autonation Toyota due to a persistent water leak. The dealership diagnosed the issue as a clogged sunroof leak and clogged drains but did not provide clear documentation that they properly inspected the roof rail gasket. [2/18] – dealership denied repair under 22te05 but then stated they could replace the roof rail gaskets if my insurance paid for it—which contradicts their claim. [2/18] – I escalated my case to Toyota corporate for review, but I am still waiting for a response. My car was left outside in the rain, potentially worsening the water damage. The dealership never provided me with a written repair estimate. Safety concerns & impact on vehicle use: I am worried about driving my car due to potential electrical system failure and airbag malfunctions caused by water damage. According to industry knowledge and Toyota customer experiences, a roof rail leak can directly contribute to all of the issues the dealership claims my car has: clogged a/c drainage system – water leaking from the roof rails can enter the a/c system, causing drainage backup, mold, and excessive moisture buildup. Sunroof leaks & drainage problems – if excess water enters through roof rail failure, it can overwhelm the sunroof drainage system, making it appear clogged when the root cause is actually the failing roof seal. Interior water damage – if the roof rail clips fail, water leaks into the headliner, side pillars, dashboard, and footwells, leading to electrical issues, carpet damage, and excessive moisture inside.
