2 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 12/30/2019

I was driving on a dirt road around 25-30 mph when my drivers side curtain shield airbag (csa) deployed unexpectedly. Previous to deploying, the seatbelt had suddenly locked into place. I leaned back to get the seatbelt to release, and as I tried to lean forward to see if it had, the airbag suddenly and unexpectedly deployed. I stopped the vehicle and looked around the car for damage from a collision and observed none. I also did not feel or sense a collision happening. I believed this issue may be related to a Toyota airbag recall, prompting me to contact them. Toyota did an inspection and read the electronic data recorder for the vehicle. Upon completion they told me that the edr had sensed a collision on the left rear of the vehicle, causing the airbag to deploy. I have a copy of the edr, though no means to read it or verify if this is correct. Based on the information about the collision, I pursued a claim with my comprehensive insurance. The insurance company found no damage to my vehicle and cited a faulty sensor and cited Toyotas csa and seatbelt recall of 2007 Rav4s. Toyota insists that my vehicle is not involved in the recall and that this issue is unrelated. I would like to know if that is true, as my insurance is denying the claim and citing the recall as the reason. I did have a Toyota dealer replace the seatbelt, as after the airbag deployed it was no longer functional. I also still have the airbag, just in case it needs to be inspected or something.

3 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/13/2016

The vehicle was taken in to replace a defective emergency break cable on 1/13/16. The vehicle was repaired at a local shop and when the vehicle was getting removed from the repair stall the side curtain air bags deployed. The vehicle was started and shifted into reverse, as the vehicle was shifted into reverse the side curtain air bags deployed. The vehicle was stationary on a flat floor at the time of the air bag deployment. I contacted Toyota and they inspected the vehicle on1/27/16, they concluded that the air bag system was operating properly at the time of the incident. A safety recall boe-curtain shield air bag sensor was completed on the vehicle on 1/19/12 according to the letter I received from Toyota after there inspection. I realize that Toyota only read the event recorder. There have been a few times the stability control lights would inadvertently blink at inappropriate times but never when there was a chance to get a diagnosis from a computer reading at a service facility.

7 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2010 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/20/2013

I was driving about 25 mph on the small street. The road curved a little in one place and two right wheels of my car went to the shoulder which was the same level as the road but a little bumpy or graveled. It took me a couple seconds to be back on the road but at the moment I was there the right side curtain airbag suddenly deployed. I was very scared and stopped and checked the car and the wheels ¿ there was nothing at all except two right wheels were dusty. I believe that it was a malfunction of a sensor because there was no impact and there were no any big rocks or pot holes on the road. But Toyota refused to repair airbags and interior; they found a scratch on the wheel and claimed the wheel was bent. It was not true as it was found during repair in body shop. The repair cost was all for airbags / sensors and roof lining with just a fraction for balancing the wheel to be sure it was indeed ok. It was a normal use of the car, no any impact, but faulty sensor.

8 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/16/2013

My vehicle's airbag sensor light went on. Right about the same time, there was a recall from Toyota stating that there could be an issue with airbag sensor light turning on. When I checked with Toyota dealer, they said the recall was for something else related to airbag sensor and there is another issue with car's clock spring and it has to be replaced. Also, I was warned that airbags won't work in case of an accident. How could an internal part stop working all of a sudden which does not have any user interaction. And if it happened so due a manufacturing defect, Toyota should be prompt to offer a recall for such a safety intensive part.

10 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

The air bag sensor light came on while driving. I took my car into a Toyota dealership and the told me there was a problem with the air bag spiral cable and it would cost $486 to fix. They also said that my air bags are disabled because of this so would not go off in the event of a wreck. I have done research and this is a very common problem in 2006 Rav4 models. I would like to file a complaint against Toyota, I believe this is something we should not have to pay to fix as it is clearly a design flaw and affects our safety every time we drive the car. I personally will not be able to fix this, I can't afford it, and I do not think we should even be responsible to paying for this in the first place. Air bags should have a lifetime warranty.

11 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Air bag sensor light illuminated approx 6 weeks back. I called the dealership and they said a vehicle recall had been issued for my vehicle, due to the air bag curtain sensor. Took vehicle to dealership; recall work was done. Less than 1 mile driving, the light came back on. Took vehicle back and after 3-4 hours of troubleshooting I was told that the spiral/coil cable behind the steering wheel was at fault and parts and labor would come to $530. Did an internet search on '07-08 Rav4, and was surprised to find more problems with the spiral/coil cable than with the curtain sensor. In several cases, owners had taken the vehicle in for the recall and were told the same I was (needed a new spiral/coil cable). After reading all the deployments of Rav4 airbags while the vehicle is not moving nor impacted; I have no confidence that the airbag system is reliable. Is there a larger issue with the airbags?.

12 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/27/2012

My air bag sensor light came on approximately at 128,824 miles. Just after my extended warranty ran out. Diagnostic test indicated that the spiral cable in the steering column has failed. Part number is 84306-22010. According to the service rep at the dealership, this failure in not an unknown problem. Parts are $272. 00 and labor will be $150. 00+ tax. After doing some research , this is a common problem with several Toyota models. According to Toyota when I called there have been recalls on the other models but have not been enough complaints against the Rav4 to issue a recall. So what is it going to take to get this thing recalled? I am fortunate enough to be able to have the money at this time, but am wondering how many people that cannot afford this repair are driving Toyota's around with an inoperative air bag?.

16 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

Problem with my 2008 Toyota rav-4. The air bag sensor light comes on randomly while driving and after starting the car and stays on. Owners manual says to take to dealer immediately. I was told by one Toyota dealership that this means the air bag is disabled, but no local dealer will be able to get me in right away. If this is as potentially serious as it sounds, I wish they would take it more seriously. I took first available appt, but it seems like this is a common problem, looking at rav-4 forums.
