Toyota has a coolant control valve problem on the Rav4 that it has known is a problem but will not issue a technical service bulletin or recall. It is only covered by the extended warranty. Any other is 800 dollars out of pocket. The warning ?? on the dash blocks the speed indicator and cannot be cleared until the fix is made.

"engine maintaince soon" light continues to go off while driving the car making the dashboard impossible to use. Took the Rav4 to the dealership and said it would be $536 to replace the coolant bypass valve. It is a know issue on 2019 and newer Rav4 Toyota vehicles and needs to be recalled.

2. 4l engine was loosing coolant and overheating. I thought it was a bad water pump
due to the leaking on the right side of the engine. After taking it to my local repair garage, I learned that the cause was 3 stripped out bolts holding the head onto the block. Solution. . . . New engine at $5500. Toyota refuses to acknowledge this mfg defect and a couple dealerships I talk with including the one I bought it from "never heard of this problem before" the exact same response given leads me to believe that that was what Toyota told them to say about this reoccurring problem.

2006 Toyota rav 4 has developed a very distinct clunking sound and feel when turning the steering wheel. I never drive the car, and noticed it immediately when I had to drive it a week ago. I questioned my husband, who said it had felt like that "forever"!! when I searched online I was shocked to see that it actually is quite a problem! car now has 90-k miles. Last summer (at a hair over 60-k) the water pump went - out of warranty. Very poor design, as the engine must be pulled to replace the pump to the tune of $1,600!!!! my husband is not looking forward to questioning the dealer about the steering.

My 2006 Rav4 4wd (40,000 miles) began leaking oil at a very fast rate, leaving a large puddle of oil on the garage floor, which wasn't immediately noticed by me. The oil pressure indicator light never illuminated, therefore I had no way of knowing that there was almost no oil in the car. I would not have known there was a problem if my boyfriend had not called me from the house to warn me that most of the oil that should be in my car was on the garage floor. Toyota replaced the defective oil line and says that the oil pressure indicator system is working correctly, but I am concerned that the next time there is a problem with my oil delivery system, I won't have any warnings to prevent me from burning up the engine.
On Dec. 6,2009, my Rav4 overheated and the check engine light came on. Took it to the local dealer the next day and the diagnosis was that the head gasket had blown. The course of action was to grind the valves and replace. When this was attempted, 4 bolts that attach to the engine could not be secured. The only option was a new/rebuilt engine. The cost -$3700. I have learned that other 2004 rav owners have experienced similar problems and Toyota will not stand behind their product and replace the defective parts nor help with labor costs. I have contacted their California customer service center and was told they could do nothing because I was no longer protected by a warranty. In addition to taking over 5 weeks to reach this conclusion, my car is still not repaired as I ponder what I should do. Customer satisfaction appears not to be a major concern of local dealer nor Toyota corporate.
Sporadic burning smell when the heat is turned on. Event has happened at least 6 times now and it only happens when the heat is turned on (vehicle was purchased Dec 2008 and current mileage is 12,200). It has happened when running at low and high speeds - very sporadic. And it's not the air coming from the outside or from other vehicles because we've immediately stopped to check when it occurs and it's not a smell from the outside or from other vehicles.

On July 20th, 2002 my wife took her 1998 Toyota Rav4 in to have a recommended flushing of her oil, transmission, cooling system. A complete tune up of the motor. At this time she told the service person of a smoke discharge at start up along with a slight noise. The service person said it was probally the rubber valve seats and my wife didnt have to worry right away. In April 2003, after all the schedualed service maintaince was performed, my wife noticed the smoke was getting worse and the noise a little worse so she took it in to have the valve seats replaced. The next day the service dept. Called her and said the motor was shot. They said it was oil pump failure and it would be over $4,000. 00 for a new motor. When we asked to if they would rebuild the old motor, the head of the service dept. Said they couldnt because there was too much jell in the motor. He said he would get ahold of our warrenty company to submit a claim for a new motor due to oil pump failure. They sent out their inspector, he said it wasnt the oil pump and our claim was denied we had him come out again on a appeal the service dept. In his words offered him no proof of the oil pump failure and again we were denied. At the urgeing of the head of the service dept. At bev smith Toyota we retained a lawyer with the promise of all the help we needed from the service dept. Needless to say we wasted our money on the lawyer. Were not allowed to take pictures of our motor, we cant have our motor even that we had no core trade for the second hand motor they put back in the Rav4 which we paid almost $3,000. 00 for. Our old motor is off limits to us, the head of bev smith's service wont return our calls and our lawyer fees are out the window because the lawyer cant get anyware with the warrenty company.
