I first heard knocking noise upon cold start-up. This has now become a chronic noise. When getting truck serviced for another matter the mechanic informed me that the vvt-I bolts were defective and needed to be replaced for a charge of $3500-$5600. He also noted this was expensive because it is a Lexus engine. Upon researching this more I discovered this is the same engine 2gr-fe v6 installed in the Lexus rx350s with same problem. However, this has been a major recall by Toyota for Lexus vehicles but not Toyotas. I contacted Toyota but they refuse to address this issue even though this is exact same defect which is a recall for Lexus models. See article //parts. Olatheoyota. Com/gr-series-engine. Html. The recall is listed on NHTSA. Once bolts loosen the vvt-I gear housing and sprocket to separate and result in the engine stopping while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash. See article: Toyota recalls various Lexus vehicles with engine bolt problems the bolts could become loose due to abnormal impacts 09/10/2013 | consumeraffairs by james limbach I cannot understand how these defective bolts under a Toyota body style, but on the same engine are excluded from this major recall. The serious consequences remain the same regardless of body style should bolts loosen during high speeds. I have escalated this complaint to the highest level at Toyota with no results so I am compelled to file an official complaint with your department. We have a toddler on board each day driving this vehicle without funds to repair this problem and are now unable to sell the car. Your attention to this matter is appreciated.

Driving car and the oil light failed to indicate oil was very low. Heard a knocking noise so I checked the oil and discovered the oil was low although oil had just been added a few days earlier. I was not sure if the vechicle was fit to drive, so for safety reasons I had the car towed to my mechanic. The mechanic checked out the car and said the engine was damaged due to the lack of oil and constant burning of oil due to a defect in the Toyota rav 4 engine/oil system which causes the oil to combuse and burn off preventing the oil indicator light to alert the driver to add oil. This defect causes engines to seize. At this time I called Toyota of north America (1800 331-4331) directly to report this issue. I was told that as of today no recall or reimbursement is being issued but if everyone with this problem call Toyota of north America directly to report their problem then an investigation will be issued. So please call today so we may all be reimbursed from Toyota for this issue that they are well aware of and are choosing to do nothing for the consumers. They will then give you a case # that they tell you to keep just in case a recall is activated.

My wife was driving home from work and the engine started to lose power, and making a loud knocking noise. After arriving home, I started the engine and heard the same loud knocking noise. I checked the oil level, and saw that it was non-existent. After researching on the internet, I found many people with the same issue. It appears that the oil line is continuing to fail on the newer v-6 engines. I will be calling Toyota tomorrow. The car is a 2006 Toyota Rav4 sport 4wd v-6. It has 53,000 miles on it. Toyota performs regular oil changes.
