After driving for about 20 minutes in cold weather, when the vehicle stops at red light/stop signs rpm drops to 400-500 resulting in noticeable shaking like the engine is about to stall. I'm afraid the vehicle my stall in the future.

When I'm driving at slow speeds the engine feels like it stalled or downshifted and the display gets dark but car is still �on�, however, it will no longer accelerate. The steering seems to be affected too. Unfortunately, it only resolved by turning the car off and back on, causing traffic to stop or swerve to avoid hitting me 3x the past 2 weeks.

When backing up (like from your driveway) if you shift from "r" to "d" too fast one of the following extremely dangerous actions will occur: 1. The engine will stall leaving you a sitting duck in traffic. Restarting is not quick or easy. You must put your foot on the brake, shift into "p" and then hit the I/o button a number of times to cycle back to "start" position to get the car started again. All the time you are praying oncoming traffic doesn't hit you! 2. The car will engage traction control (trac indicator on). When this happens pressing on the accelerator pedal has (almost) no effect (I. E. Severe hesitation) once again this leaves you a sitting duck in the middle of the road until the car decides it wants to move again. From what I can tell this defect is 100% repeatable. I have experienced it numerous times and it scares the living cr@p out of me each time it does it!.

Tl-the contact owns a 2015 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, the key light illuminated, the steering wheel seized, brake pedal was hard to depress, while the engine stalled. The vehicle was taken to local dealer, dch freehold Toyota 4268 u. S. 9 s,freehold, NJ 07728, where the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not repaired. Engine stalls for a few seconds on hills.
On at least 5 different occasions since owning this Toyota Rav4 I have experienced a serious engine control problem. It happens in the economy mode of the car which is the default mode you start the car up in. What happens is when pulling into traffic and you push down on the accelerator to get fast speed to merge into traffic the engine stalls. You can have the accelerator pushed all the way down and the engine gives you no power. This creates a very dangerous condition on the road as my car is actually stalling when it should be accelerating. I have tested and done the same thing in the 'sport mode' of the vehicle and it does not create the same stall situation. Thus my conclusion is the problem rests in the 'economy mode'. I have asked the dealer about this and they say they do not know why. I am going back tomorrow to as them to take back this car, as it is dangerous and is not predictable or dependable in driving.

In 2003 we bought a brand new 2002 Toyota Rav4. In 2007, the engine seized up at 56,000 miles. We took it to Toyota and they told us it would cost $7,000 because they needed to replace the engine. After gathering all our maintenance history and much deliberation Toyota agreed to replace the engine but we had to pay for the labor ($2500); we agreed. After they did the work, we heard a soft constant beating sound coming from the engine. When we took it back, we were told that sound was normal when a new engine is installed and it will go away -- it didn't. 18 months and 10,000 miles later, the engine died again. Baffled at how two separate engines can die we took it to our personal mechanic. He explained to us that the engine was never replaced, but rebuilt. We took it back to the dealership and they refused to help us. So did Toyota corp. They have a settlement for defective engines for the same generation engines (1997-2002) for almost every model. Except the Rav4. What makes it worse was I was told I was getting a new engine. At the same time my personal mechanic had found me a used engine (12,000 mi) for 2300 including installation. Had I knew they were going to rebuild it, I would have went with that option. So they screwed me out of 2500, a car, and a chance at actually fixing the car.

: the contact stated while driving 30 mph the engine stalled and the vehicle lost all power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. Upon inspection it was determined the baffle under the oil cap broke off. As a result metal pieces went into the timing chain, causing the engine to seize. The engine was replaced. Updated 3/20/2006 - the consumer was able to locate a TSB which referenced this problem.
