1 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

Just driving along, and feels like brakes grab and jerk the wheel and vsc trac lights go on. Problem has been occurring intermittently. Can be at highway speeds, but also happens at any speed. Very dangerous and scary. Vsc-trac and trac-off lights randomly illuminated on dry, level pavement when brakes were applied, causing a loud grinding noise (much louder than normal application of anti-lock brakes).

2 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2018

Tamara recall: I was going 60 mph when my traction control lights started blinking. It started making a grinding noise and front end shaking and loss of power steering it has 190,000 miles on it.

3 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2017

About a month ago I was driving on the highway at about 60mph and all of a sudden my vehicle began to jerk erraticly, became hard to control steering and braking, seemed to be braking on its on, it made a very loud grinding noise and some sort of alarm starting beeping and my vsc lights and traction control lught starting flashing. This lasted about 3 minutes and continues to happen sporadically every 2 to 3 days. There is no cause and no rhythm or reason for this to happen. I am always on a seemingly flat smooth surface moving straight ahead at a moderately high rate of speed between 50 and 70mph. .

4 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2017

Takata recall. Vehicle stability control system my 2002 Sequoia began beeping, making a loud grinding noise and the traction light came on. I had little to no control of the vehicle. I am scared because it have happen on the freeway going 60-65ph. I literly do not have any control of my car everytime this happens.

5 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

Vsc and trac off lights go on and a horrible grinding noise pulls the car to the right. Not safe my wife and children. Please help.

6 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

Identical problem as described by many others. Vsc-trac and trac-off lights randomly illuminated on dry, level pavement when brakes were applied, causing a loud grinding noise (much louder than normal application of anti-lock brakes), and car pulled and would not stop no matter how hard the brake pedal was pressed. First couple times, brakes were applied to slow the vehicle in traffic, so the failure to fully stop wasn't noticed. This now happens consistently whenever I drive and does not matter how fast or slow I am going. These failures clearly put vehicles at risk of accidents, and it is difficult to understand why the 2003 Sequoias were recalled for vsc issues, but not the 2002, when the parts being replaced fit both years. I have only had the vehicle for 2 years with 140,000 miles.

7 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2015

The vehicle was being driven on a dry paved road. The vsc and traction warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel as the vehicle pulled hard to the right, nearly causing an accident. The steering wheel becomes difficult to steer, the vehicle loses power, and the brakes inadvertently engage, making a terrible grinding noise. The problem happens at least once, each time the vehicle is restarted. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number: 10v176000 (traction control system) for the 2003 Toyota Sequoia - this failure is most likely related.

8 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2015

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. While driving 70 mph, the vhc track warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that there was a loud grinding noise under the vehicle. The contact also stated that the vehicle started grinding and shook when braking. The vehicle was driven to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 81,069.

9 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2014

The skid control lights come on for no reason the whole car shakes and there is a thumping and grinding noise from the vehicle along with the beeping warning sound. It happens at different speeds sometimes when breaking or turning and losing power. This last a few seconds then the vsc light comes on and the vsc off light and all is ok while lights are on.

10 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

While traveling down the interstate at 65 mph on a flat, even surface under good weather conditions, the vehicle stability control unexpectedly engaged, the vsc trac and trac off lights illuminated. The vehicle's brakes engaged, the steering began to pull to the right, a grinding noise occurred, and the vehicle became very difficult to control. This is not the first time this has happened. The last time was approximately 3 weeks ago (also highway travel at 65+mph). Before that, it had been a while. This seems to be a completely random occurrence. However, this poses a serious problem and with two small children, it is extremely concerning. Based on what I've read, this is common in this model year vehicle. Not sure why a recall has not been made.

11 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph and making a right turn to exit the freeway, the vehicle experienced a loud grinding noise coming from the front passenger side. The contact also indicated that during the incident the vehicle pulled to the right and the speed decelerated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to diagnose the defect. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 131,674.

12 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2013

Vsc track system activates unexpectedly under normal driving conditions producing a very loud grinding noise of the front brakes and for about 15-30 secs the brakes won't work. This problem causes the steering system to suddenly pull to the right side with a significant reduction of speed. Extremely dangerous when it has happened on high traffic volume highways. Reported this situation to Toyota corp. And they replied that they don't have any campaign or recall for the condition described. Toyota customer experience provided me with incident no. Xxxxxx-xxx303 for my complaint report. It is worth to mention of the hundreds of Sequoia owners complaining of this problem on social media websites for vehicle complaints and yet nothing has been done by Toyota.

13 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2013

Vehicle vsc and trac is auto-engaging during a drive without cause. The vehicle will jerk to a side, and a grinding noise will occur until the vehicle comes to a stop. Braking is slow and takes much longer to stop the vehicle. Electronic beeping is also heard throughout. Vsc and trac lights come on and stay on after the incident until the vehicle is turned off.

14 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2013

While driving my 2002 Toyota Sequoia, I pulled into traffic and all of a sudden the truck lost power as cars swerved around me and a violent grinding noise started. A skid control light started flashing. I could feel the grinding on the brake pedal. After a few seconds, the truck beeped and 2 more lights came on. The "trac off" and "vsc" came on. After that the truck drove normal. This has happened multiple times now! I no longer feel safe on the road as this seems to happen at any moment. I have read all about this problem on the internet. Many Sequoia owners have had these same problems. Why will Toyota not fix these problems??? what has to happen for them to feel responsible??.

15 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

Loyal Toyota owner. All of a sudden beeping, grinding noise, vsc/trac light goes on, passenger front brake locks & very difficult to control the vehicle pulling to one side. The speed was estimated at 35-50 mph, dry road conditions. This problem had been noted several times randomly vehicle skid control (vsc) simply engages at normal speeds. It's the exact same problem as the 2003 which the vsc system & components was recalled. Disappointed with Toyota 2002 not included with recall! unsafe to drive and is dangerous! an accident waiting to happen!.

16 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

While traveling home at normal speed the vsc/trac lights came on and the vehicle began vibrating and making a grinding noise. After stopping on the side of the road, I called my husband and was told to turn the vehicle off and on to possibly reset the vsc/trac. It seemed to work briefly but it started to do it again. After making it home, my husband drove the vehicle initially without any issues. However, he attempted to take the vehicle to the store and the problem started again. He noted audible alerts and the vsc/trac lights illuminating, grinding from what seemed to be the passenger side front tire. He had to pull off to the side of the road; however, found it difficult to control the vehicle. The speed was estimated at 35-40 mph, dry conditions with no obvious road conditions or issues. Smoke was observed coming from the passenger front of the vehicle. This problem had been noted several time randomly over the past two years, but has seemingly been resolved by turning the vehicle off and back on. This was the first time that the issue has persisted, and the increased difficulty in steering.

17 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2012

When driving at highway speed, in dry conditions, the vehicle skid control (vsc) and traction contol system (trac) warning lights suddenly began flashing and beeping. The steering wheel began difficult to control and a loud grinding noise came from the brake pedal as the abs system was activated. This made for a very dangerous situation as the vehicle was very difficult to control in heavy traffic! after about five seconds, the grinding/abs activation and warning beeps stopped, but the warning lights stayed illuminated. When taking the next highway offramp and applying the brakes, the warning lights and grinding started again and this time it almost caused an accident when the braking was overridden by the abs! only after turning the car off and restarting did the warning lights turn off. The 2003 Sequoia was recalled for this same problem. The 2002 Sequoia should also be recalled. Does there have to be accidents and fatalities before this will happen?? Toyota needs to take responsibility for this dangerous defect.

18 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

Makes a grinding noise, breaks on one side and pulls to one side. Skid indicator light, trac off light, and vsc light all come on and stay on. Vehicle decelerates momentarily, then resumes normal driving. Lights stay on until you turn off the vehicle.

19 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

1. While driving along, there was suddenly a loud grinding noise and the vsc trac and the trac off lights came on and stayed on. 2. This incident was the second time it has happened in the last few weeks. As a consequence, I dare not drive my vehicle now. 3. I cannot afford an expensive repair right now, so I must now ride my bike or the bus anywhere I need to go.

20 Brake Grinding Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2003

Toyota is advising brakes need to be replaced. Car has 260000 miles on it and is 1yr old. Have complained about brake issue to Toyota at 15000 miles. No solution Toyota did nothing. Brakes make grinding noise like gravel. Also the vsc system engages and does not take power from drive train, result in very loud metal shearing noises from undercarriage. Toyota is saying this is normal. Toyota is advising the avg life of brakes on this car is approx 20000 miles there is a major design error between the vcs and the abs brake system resulting poor brake life and this can not be a safe situation when vsc does not release power to brakes when it activates. Vcs also activates at drop of a hat. General brake design must have major design flaw if avg life is only 20000 miles.
