2 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/21/2025

On three separate occasions we have lost braking power preventing instantaneous stopping, and control of the vehicle. They partially work when your foot is pushing on the pedal all the way to the floor. This occurs autonomously without warning and the following occur: lose breaking power, inability to brake and stop at safe distances instantaneously and momentarily, brake abs alarm, parking support brake malfunction ("visit your dealer"), check engine, collision assistance fails, and traction control fails. The first occurrence my spouse was driving the vehicle on a 65 mph three lane highway that at the time was evening rush hour. She had to decrease her speed to 30 mph in a 65 mph speed zone in order to slow the vehicle enough at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of her, then continue at a safe distance as traffic ahead of her excelled. Had this happened traveling the speed limit, and had to stop abruptly, this could have either caused severe bodily injury and/or death to her and the vehicle behind and in front of her, and other adjacent lanes. The second occurrence after the dealer looked at it (as covered under warranty), we received the vehicle back. The next day the brakes went out and alarms appeared once again as she pulled out of the driveway. I pulled the vehicle in the driveway for her and couldn't stop and almost drove through my garage at only idling speed. The third occurrence was most recently after an oil change. I drove the vehicle around the block and again, the brakes went out and alarms appeared once again. We have owned this vehicle since may 10th and it has been at dealerships for repair for at least 35 days minimum. On the first occurence they had a regional tech/engineer inspect the vehicle. Nothing was found as problematic and a factory reset was performed - nothing replaced. The second occasion - same outcome. . . Nothing fixed or replaced. The vehicle is in the shop again for the same problem.

3 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/26/2024

Please refer to NHTSA issue 11624149. Toyota has dismissed my complaints about the trailer brake controller and has (twice now) closed the complaint I have filed with them regarding the issue I am having with the trailer brake controller. Even though I have been able to reproduce the cpu programming issue with the trailer brake controller with a Toyota service technician, Toyota corporate has decided to not move forward with any remedies and has dismissed my concerns. The improper programing on the trailer brake controller in this vehicle is a serious safety issue that should be recalled before an accident occurs and someone is killed.

4 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/26/2024

I own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia sr5, which I purchased new in colorado and moved to virginia in 2004. I received a Toyota limited service campaign program notice in 2013 about excessive corrosion on the frame. Alexandria Toyota inspected the vehicle and applied a corrosion-resistant compound to the frame. They also replaced the spare tire carrier assembly due to rusting. Over the years, I've had mechanics mention the rust on the frame but Toyota never issued a recall on the 2001 Sequoia. In November 2024, the following dashboard lights remained on while driving: vehicle skid control (vsc) off, vsc trac and brake lights. I took it to steven’s auto clinic in alexandria. They found low brake fluid levels were causing the brake system failure. The brake pipes are leaking due to heavy rust. In addition, rust was destroying the under carriage. The brake system and frame would require extensive maintenance. They warned me not to drive the car. They refilled the brake fluid to allow me to take the car home. Reading the complaints under structure on the NHTSA website, dozens of customers over the years mention serious rusting on the frame of their 2001 Sequoias. I believe Toyota had a recall to replace the frame on the tundra but never included the 2001 Sequoia even though it was built on the tundra frame. I now have a vehicle I can’t drive, due to safety concerns, and I can’t sell, except for parts. The Sequoia should have been included in the tundra recall. Toyota needs to be held accountable. I can provide any paperwork for my 2001 Sequoia including the limited service campaign program notice and the repair order from stephen’s auto clinic if necessary. I can also provide the vehicle for inspection.

Awd system the following massage keep coming up "a malfunction in the all-wheel drive system has been detected". I took the vehicle to the dealership to be inspected. At this moment nobody can find the problem for this issue.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/31/2024

T-sb-0043-24. In this safety bulletin it is noted that front brakes squeak. Loudly I might state. Happens always in the morning when backing out of covered garage. The bulletin says to verify then replace. Can get no help from dealership or from Toyota USA. Very annoying and do not know about danger.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/28/2024

Brand new 2024 brakes squeaking. Cold starts, and now even when car has been running all day. When breaking the brakes squeak very loud. Called the dealer they said this is normal. Has not been inspected or reproduce the issue by the dealer. No warning lights appeared yet. We feel it might be a safety issue since it's a family SUV brakes may fail.

8 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

My vehicle has randomly been flashing vbs/abs/traction control lights. Sometimes nothing happens other than the flashing lights. Other times I’ll be driving & when going around a curve my car makes a beeping noise (sounds like the abs noise activated) & I’ll feel a pulsing under the brake & hear a grinding sound. It doesn’t allow me to brake effectively. Another time I was coming to a stop behind a car at a red light. It was clear as day, roads weren’t wet & I couldn’t have been going over 10 mph. When hitting my brakes, my steering wheel kind of glided back & forth for a sec and it felt like my tires “floated”in the same motion as wheel until it stopped.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/25/2024

The ecu in my Sequoia is incorrectly programmed when towing a trailer. I have a 6,000# dual axle electric brake travel trailer that I use my Sequoia to tow with. I set up the trailer specifications in the vehicle computer per the Toyota owner's manual and set the trailer gain per the Toyota owner's manual. The problem I experience is when the gain is set this way the trailer brakes lock-up under moderate braking. To remedy the trailer brakes locking up, I reduce the gain. The problem is, in order to stop the trailer brakes from locking up under moderate to heavy braking, I have to reduce the gain to the point the trailer brakes are effectively not operating. I have already brought the vehicle and trailer to a Toyota dealership, and they were able to reproduce the issue I am experiencing with the brakes. However, Toyota has closed my case with no remedy. I never experienced this issue with the previous vehicle (a 2015 Toyota tundra) I used to tow this same travel trailer with. I believe the ecu is incorrectly programmed causing a different voltage output being provided to the trailer when 1) the brake pedal is depressed; vs. 2) when the trailer brake controller slider is operated (to set trailer gain).

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/27/2024

No accident. Just frame issues. If you can. Can I please get a voucher for frame repair. I really like this SUV. Thank you!.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

Traction control warning lights, vsc warning lights. These lights have been on for 2 years, resulting in check engine light on. I have replaced every sensor possible, fuses, gas cap, and reset the system multiple times but can not get these lights to stay off. Since lights have been on, when driving on a muddy, wet, icy or slippery road way, my steering locks up, the brakes stop working and there is complete loss of vehicle control. All without warning. This is an extreme hazard and very dangerous. This has been on going since 2017 and is still a major problem . It started at around 200,000 miles.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 12/22/2023

After several years of fighting problems with, after braking to a brief stop, the loss of power/abs grinding when accelerating and turning right, now the abs is completely dysfunctional. Both trc lights will turn on and usually the parking brake, and when braking at speeds less than 10mph the abs will activate and prevent bring the truck to a stop without pumping them, on dry pavement. When the abs light turns on, then braking is possible, but all pressure is gone from brake booster and brakes sound like they're grinding, not like the sound of abs engaging. Very dangerous to drive in snow as front brakes work but drive axle doesn't disengage when the brake pedal is depressed. Regular mechanic won't engage with diagnosing issues as he feels the problem is partly computer malfunction and Toyota won't allow for used part mismatching. Abs/ecu is failed.

I have worked with my local dealership and they have discounted the price of downgrading the brakes but Toyota will not help cover costs even though replacement parts or other options are unavailable - the car has not been driven - but now this is my only source of transportation to get to work .

While driving on a curved road, the vehicle made a grinding sound with flashing vsc off and trac off lights, as it pulled violently to the right and almost ran off the road with my two children in the back seat. This was an extremely scary incident. I do understand that many first generation Sequoia owners have reported similar incidents and that there were no recalls, however, I think this is a serious enough issue that will cost innocent people their lives. I was able to pull a reading from the obd2 and it says there is a fault with the yaw rate sensor. Please help before this causes someone's death. 15 Service Brakes problem of the 2011 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/20/2023

On 09/20/2023 while driving our 2011 Toyota Sequoia 4x4 limited (5. 7 iforce non flex fuel) my wife was preparing to stop at a traffic light. Completely unexpected and with no warning, the vehicle started bucking, the engine began making a knocking noise and numerous dashboard lights started flashing. It immediately stalled while attempting to stop, thus, causing a very dangerous situation, losing total control of the brakes and steering, nearly causing a collision with the vehicle in front of her. The vehicle had to be towed from the middle of the road, while in heavy traffic. Eventually it was diagnosed (at my mechanics shop) and determined to be a broken valve spring in cylinder #7. This caused the valve to drop into the cylinder bore, making contact with the piston, known as "catastrophic failure on an 'interference' engine". . I later learned that these defective ($5) valve springs, are used in my meticulously maintained 5. 7 Toyota motor,. . . The same part number under recall in several Lexus vehicles!! being that I constantly maintained this vehicle and it being in overall excellent condition, I determined it was less expensive to have the engine replaced over repaired. I spent over $4600 in a used motor with 88k miles, and $5400 in labor for the replacement. . Total cost of over $10,000 for a $5 defective part that was only recalled on the Lexus vehicles. I kept the original engine in case I can (eventually) have Toyota corp do an inspection on it and get some kind of compensation on this dangerous, avoidable, selective vehicle recall. No luck thus far but have pictures, invoices and all documents on this situation that I can provide when requested. I am having difficulty downloading these documents to this site. Thank you very much. Richard gustin 845-590-1744 outlaw5225@yahoo. Com.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

Plan road trip had vehicle thoroughly. Inspected only to find that the frame was cracked on goth side and all brake lines are corroded. Called several places to get help with this matter, only to have no help at all. Spoke to many people final communication was with kendric in tennessee who admitted the prior owner was notified as to the issue I have owned this vehicle for 6 yrs and could not understand why the prior owner was notified and not I. I find that due to not notifying the correct owner they should allow me to have this issue taken care of, but they are not cooperating with me I would like to take this matter further and have them accountable for this safety issue and neglect as to contacting the existing owner. Reaching out for help sincerely beverly fournier bmfournier@hotmail. Com 207-436-0654.

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/31/2023

Unknown I'm unsure of what is causing it but it is a very common issue with the 03-04 Sequoia. The brake light will come on like on mine and apparently it's a failure in one of the brake components. It's either the brake booster or the master cylinder in most cases is starting to g out. I've done research on this issue and it's a very common problem costing people thousands to get fixed. I feel like if it's that huge of a problem like I've seen with Sequoia owners than it's needs to be addressed in a better manner.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/07/2023

While driving my 2001 Sequoia sr5 with only 74,750 miles on freeways at speeds between 55 and 65 mph, the SUV's braking system activates unexpectedly and without cause. The vsc check engine lighting and warning sound illuminate. My SUV veered to the right, the steering wheel vibrated, and it went into a skid when the brakes were abruptly engaged, causing it to skid. My SUV abruptly decelerated as if it had lost power. This situation was hazardous for other vehicles who could not tell if they were applying the brakes due to the absence of visible brake lights to prevent a collision. Fortunately, I responded defensively and avoided collisions with other vehicles and roadside obstacles. This issue is a safety concern; if it occurs at the wrong moment, a tragedy can be avoided. I've seen more than a hundred complaints from other proprietors and a completed NHTSA investigation. Sequoia models from 2001 and subsequent years were recalled for the same issue. Before a life is lost, Toyota must address this issue in all model years.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/14/2022

While driving on a highway at about 60 mph, my vehicle made a loud grinding noise while the steering felt very difficult to control and then the vsc trac and trac off lights both came on. I got off the highway and pulled over to a parking lot to inspect the vehicle, but I did not see anything that would cause the vehicle to do that. After a few minutes, I restarted the vehicle and while driving on local roads to get home, the same thing happened again. I was extremely worried for the safety of my wife and children in the vehicle. After reading a few Toyota owners threads online, this seems to be a very familiar pattern with these Toyota Sequoias, and I strongly believe that this will result in very serious injuries or possible deaths if Toyota does not issue a recall to fix the problem causing such dangers for drivers. Please investigate the matter to save lives. Thank you!.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/20/2022

"vsc off, vsc trac, and abs" indicators on the dash. Yaw sensor failure which controls wheel speed which will cause vehicle to decelerate and possibly cause an accident. Toyota should issue a nationwide recall. Toyota is aware of the issue but has failed to issue a nationwide recall.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/30/2021

Tony divino Toyota, a Toyota motor company dealership, sold me this vehicle sight unseen knowing I would immediately be towing a boat trailer 350 miles at highway speeds through construction zones on I-80 with children and our dog onboard. I was told it had passed a "160 point inspection" and was "in great condition". However, when delivered to me the dealership knew it was not road worthy and in fact illegal to drive on public roads due to missing a third brake light, bad rear brakes were bad, the transmission had failed, the battery had failed, the shocks/struts had failed, and a live shotgun shell was rolling around under the drivers seat. Both Toyota motor corporation and the dealership refused to address or correct these vehicle defects which could have resulted in a disastrous crash with injury/death to myself and children. This systemic Toyota disregard for used vehicle quality creates a national safety issue with all cars processed through the Toyota motor company network.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/15/2021

I was coming off the highway goi g down the off ramp at a rate of speed in line with the speed limit, and the vsc/abs/brake lights all came on. The truck started making a grinding noise and was difficult to control. I pulled over and checked underneath. Everything was fine and there was no sign of an issue. I turned the truck off and on, and all the lights cleared; however, the lights turn on again when the vehicle is cold. Once it warms up, and you turn the car on and off, the clear. No codes on the scanner. Forums say this happens regularly with this make, model and year, but no one is sure what it is. Everything from emissions, to the brake sensor to the yaw rate sensor.

33 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/12/2020

While I was traveling on the highway at 70 mph, the right front brake locked up momentarily and lurched the vehicle, the vsc and traction control light started flashing and a warning buzzer went off. After looking into things, there are known issues with the 2001 and 2002 Toyota Sequoia that cause this exact thing to happen to plenty of other people. I understand that there has already been an evaluation done on this matter and it was ruled that the severity of the issue does not warrant a recall. Why there is no recall being issued on the multiple failure points in the vehicle's system and people are required to spend thousands of dollars in repairs for parts and labor when the manufacturer's design didn't last? I purchased this vehicle for my father to feel more safe in, and that is the last thing that he feels while driving it. I am now required to drive our affected vehicle and have to be constantly paying attention so that the abs system doesn't shoot me into another vehicle.
