37 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/06/2013

While driving on an expressway, without cause or warning, the srs airbag light began flashing. This had happened before at 38,000 miles in April of 2010 but was repaired by the dealer under extended warranty by removing and replacing the driver's seat and related air bag equipment. Now the car is out of warranty. Toyota needs to address this recurring problem with this model and year as it is a life threatening safety hazard when the srs air bag system in a car is nonfunctional. If indeed the repair is a simple detachment and reattachment of the air bag connectors under the front seats (as reported on the 2006 Sienna edmunds consumer bulletin boards), then Toyota should make that repair available to all owners of this car (without regard to age of car or mileage) for no cost. These connectors are in a position to be knocked loose easily by personal items in the underseat storage tray or otherwise on the floor of the car. It is a bad design that could have life threatening consequences if an air bag does not deploy.

38 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

There was no accident, the srs warning light came on, blinking, indicating an issue with the system. I took it to my dealer, was quoted a repair of $1600 for a new wire harness. I declined. I researched online for several days and found that this is a very common issue with this particular Toyota make and model. Often people get the repair done and the light comes on within days. This is a safety issue and an issue with the design of the car, not user error. I have never been in an accident, the airbags have never been deployed, so I can't understand why normal use would cause such an expensive repair. Toyota needs to do a recall of this make and model or provide a fix that will work. The wire harness for this model is under the front seats, which get moved and jostled daily. The passenger seat has a bin that slides in and out directly above the wires for the srs! I have jostled the wires and the light goes off. So now I don't know if my airbags even work. The dealer wants $150 just to tell me yes or no on that. Please look through your records to find more of these complaints as I know they have been filed. . Read more...

39 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/23/2013

Srs warning light came on, and continues to blink. Trouble / diagnostic codes of b0111, and b1152 appear. Toyota service bulletin (TSB) 0162-10 addresses this issue. Apparently, the terminals / connections inside the wiring harness corrode, and must be replaced. Cost is @ $3000 to repair. . Read more...

40 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

The airbag warning light keeps coming on intermittently even though this vehicle has never been in a crash. The dealership tells me the air bags will not deploy if the warning light is on, but that the connector below the seats is likely the culprit. Toyota should issue a recall and provide a solution to this safety issue.

44 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/31/2012

Was t-boned by someone who failed to yield on green. He was given a ticket. I was through the intersection going 34. 8 miles/hour at the triggering event. Has Toyota do inspection on car and "chip". It only registered a "front event". Repair costs are 12k, this included replacing both driver side doors????? why did the airbags not deploy or better yet why was there not even a side event registered when he clearly hit me in the side?? suffered a concussion and neck back injuries. Had my 6 and 2 year old in the back in car seats.

48 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/13/2012

Airbag light indicator in the dash started blinking until now. From what I have read, some airbags may not deploy in the event of an accident due to this, thus, a safety issue. I have read in the forums that this is a common problem for the type/model of my minivan. My minivan is already out of the warranty and personally think that there should be a recall for this issue. If fear for the safety of my family whenever we use this minivan.

49 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/09/2012

Air bag indicator light came on indicating a failure in the driver's side air bag. The air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash due to a faulty wire harness as explained the Toyota dealer service department. This is a known problem with Sienna minivans, for which a Toyota service bulletin has been issued, but there has not been a model recall.

50 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/23/2011

Air bag light on instrument panel flashes on and off. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed a defective air bag sensor, which needs to be replaced along with the air bag and airbag harness under the driver's seat since the air bag would not deploy in the event of a crash, which could result in serious injury or death. Vehicle has only 47000miles on it but since it is over 5years it is not covered under warranty. This malfunction is not the result of any accident or bump, it started on its own. This issue has been reported on numerous vehicles and for no apparent reason. This is a serious defect in the srs and a critical safety issue. It is in fact a clear violation of basic federal safety standards that should be taken care by Toyota.

51 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact noticed that the air bag warning light would illuminate intermittently. The dealer advised the contact to replace the air bag harness since the air bag would not deploy in the event of a crash. The manufacturer was aware of the failure; however, did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The current and failure mileage was 95,000.

52 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/31/2011

We have owned '06 Sienna for many years and have enjoyed the comfort and safety that it provides but we have been faced with an unusual problem with srs airbag system that seems to be a major safety issue. Upon investigating the issue online, this appears to be a very common and a wide-spread problem. == the vehicle srs warning light comes on and keeps blinking when vehicle is first turned on. It remains on or blinking entire time the vehicle is driven. This happens for no apparent reason or fault of the driver and there is no explanation anywhere as to why this happens. Once this fault occurs, the vehicle is no longer safe to drive. Toyota dealers have diagnosed this issue with dtc b0111/0116 and verified this to be a warning light indicating a problem with airbag system. They have also confirmed that the airbags will not deploy in the event of an accident. Once diagnosed with this problem, majority of times the customers are faced with hundreds or thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expense for the repairs. The repair seems to be anywhere from bad connector for srs sensor to bad wiring harness to complete replacement of front/side airbag system. == these vehicles clearly violate basic federal safety standards 201, 202, 203, 208 & 214. If this issue has been reported on numerous vehicles and if fault occurs for no apparent reason then there is obviously a defect in the material or the way this airbag safety is designed. Toyota has a service bulletins out for this issue but no recall. This is unacceptable by any vehicle safety standards. This issue needs to be investigated and the vehicles recalled by Toyota as a defective or non-functioning airbag system is a major safety defect and could result in serious injury or death.

53 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/11/2011

Our srs warning light came on during a road trip at approximately 63,000. The dealership stated that this code b011, is the right front airbag and the wiring harness needs to be replaced at a cost of $2400 and about 3 days of labor. Of course our extended warranty does not cover this, either. It is possible that the air bag will not deploy if we are in an accident. Toyota customer service only documented my complaint, and would not tell me if there is any investigation related to this issue since each case is confidential. I see multiple complaints related to this exact same issue. How many complaints does it take before Toyota is forced to do something about it. Seems like this has got to be a manufacturing defect. We have never been in an accident. Our van is kept in a garage and I feel we've taken good care of it. I really wanted this vehicle to last for many more years, but this is very concerning to me and I question we will ever purchase another Toyota, given their poor publicity lately.

54 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

My air bag light blinks continuously. I have researched this topic on-line and have found that when this light blinks, it means the air bags will not deploy correctly in the event of an accident. There are hundreds if not thousands of complaints about the airbag wiring harness being defective, either under the passenger seat or drivers seat. Currently there are no recalls by Toyota to address this issue. This is a safety issue that needs to be rectified. It seems that while the 2006 model year Sienna is the primary vehicle with the problem, there are also some 2005, and 2007 model years with the same problem. The dealer wants $2000+ to fix this problem. There are stories of back orders on this part being up to 4 months. Toyota knows there is a problem, but now needs to step up to the plate and do a recall to fix this problem. I don't like driving a family vehicle that is supposed to be safe, but is not because of this fault in the airbag system. Very frustrating.

55 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/08/2011

I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna van. The srs light intermittently comes on. I took it in for general maintainance as well as to check the air bags. I got an error code of bo111 and was told it would be several hundred to fix. I chose not to have it fixed at this time as it was the passenger side. Now the light has gone off. Im not sure if in fact it is an airbag problem or electrical. I was also in an accident in 2009 which I could not even open my door and the vehicle was not driveable and the airbags did not deploy. Toyota is looking into this. Hopefully, it will be covered because I do believe this is a manufacturers issue.

56 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/23/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the air bag light was constantly illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they stated that the failure was located within the wiring circuits of the drivers seat. As a result, the air bags would not deploy in the event of a crash. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 59,000 and the current mileage was 69,999.

57 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/21/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Sienna. The contact was driving 45 mph when a vehicle crashed into the front driver side of the contact's vehicle. 58 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/21/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the driver attempted to merge into traffic when a vehicle crashed into the front end of the contacts vehicle. The front passengers side seat belt failed to restrain and the air bag failed to deploy. The front passenger sustained lacerations to the forehead when his head struck the dashboard. The rear passenger sustained seat belt burns across the chest. The driver received burns and bruises to the chest. The manufactured was contacted and a complaint was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and the current mileage was 74,000.

59 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/21/2011

The air bag light is flashing on my 2006 Toyota Sienna. It started flashing last year, then stopped for a number of months, and now it is flashing again. Other people have reported the same issue, and indicate that if this light is flashing, then the air bags will not deploy in a collison.

60 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/23/2011

Air bag on left front failed in April 2009. Replaced airbag at owner's cost of $700. Then about 6 months later the airbag warning light on dash started blinking and would not turn off. Took to Toyota dealer on 2/23/11 and dealer stated that code in computer shows short in floor harness. At 100,401 miles Toyota will not stand behind failure and my cost would be $1900 to repair. Airbag system will not deploy in an accident is my understanding. . . Can't believe Toyota will recall a problem for floorboards affecting the accelerator and will not recall a problem affecting the entire airbag system.

61 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2011 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/13/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Sienna. The contact was driving approximately 50 mph when the contact crashed into another vehicle that was traveling 5 mph. The contacts air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the crash did not constitute air bag deployment. The vehicle was neither inspected nor repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The current and failure mileage was 5,000.

62 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

Air bag light is on and flashing. Diagnosed by Toyota dealer on 02/09/11 as code b0111, needs r/seat airbag assembly & floor wire harness. Estimate $2160. 00. I contacted Toyota customer experience line, the contacted dealer and agreed to pay $700 towards repair. I still cannot afford the repair as I am still paying on the auto loan. This is a safety failure and should be recalled. I am now without airbags. Airbags have never been deployed - no accidents. Vehicle is only 5 years old and 81k miles.

63 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/04/2011

Stopped in left turn lane and hit head on by another vehicle at about 30-35 mph. Air bags did not deploy and seat belt retractor failed resulting in severe injury to sternum and ribs.

64 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/29/2010

I own a 2005 Toyota Sienna with only 43,000 miles, and the passenger air bag light is on all the time, it doesn't matter if someone is sitting in the seat. Today I took my van to the dealership to have the spare tire chain replaced, another Toyota recall, and asked them to check out the passenger air bag light. I was told the air bag and wiring harness needed to be replaced at a cost of $2148. I was very surprised when I was told this. I bought the van new; and the air bags have never been deployed. This doesn't sound like something that should need to be replaced as regular maintenance. I have never heard of someone having to replace their air bags and wiring when they haven't been in an accident. I'm concerned for the safety of my family, will the air bags still work or do I have no choice but to pay for something that was a faulty design.

65 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

My 2006 Sienna xle has less than 55, 000 miles. Just before the new year, the airbag light started flashing continuously. We got the car in on Dec. 30 and were told the flashing light was due to a faulty wiring harness in the front passenger seat, which is covered under the regular (and my extended) warranty, but that the parts were not available at the time so I would have to bring the car back. I specially asked if the vehicle was safe to drive and was told my the initial service rep that it was. The service rep failed to follow up with making an appointment as promised, so I called one week later to find out that the parts were going to take in excess of 4 weeks to arrive! I was highly suspicious that the airbag was in working order, so it was no surprise that when I threatened to sue Toyota if the airbag failed or malfunctioned in any way in an accident or otherwise, that I was then told my car was unsafe to drive and the dealer would provide a rental at their cost. An order was placed on January 6th for the part which was scheduled to come in 6 weeks later, Feb. 9th. After waiting six weeks, I found out yesterday my order was "accidentally" canceled and that the manufacturer can't keep up production, so presumably, I'm starting my wait time again. I have lodged a complaint with Toyota hdqt and have a case id with them. There are hundreds of similar complaints here and on the internet but no recall or notice from Toyota about the fact that folks are driving around with flashing air bag lights that mean your airbag may not deploy in an accident and is deactivated because of the faulty wiring harness system. My dealer had 6 complaints alone, six weeks ago. This is outrageous!!! I am calling NHTSA as soon as I finish this complaint.

66 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/20/2010

The air bag indicator light on the dash flashes when the van is turned on. The Toyota dealer said that the air bag wiring harness needs to be replaced since the air bag would not deploy in the event of an accident. My Sienna is inoperable until repaired. There is a long wait, one to three months, to get this part replaced as it is on back order from Toyota. The dealer stated that there are more than 400 air bag wiring harnesses on back order for our region alone. An internet search shows multitudes of other 2006 Toyota Sienna owners with this same air bag malfunction. Air bags are included to help save lives, but they do not work properly on the 2006 Toyota Sienna. A recall should be instituted to fix this problem so the air bags in all 2006 Toyota Sienna's' will work properly. Unless this defect is fixed, the 2006 Toyota Sienna is an unsafe vehicle.

67 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/04/2010

In 2008, the airbag dash light on our 2006 Toyota Sienna began blinking. We took our van to the dealer, who advised that the driver seat sensor was bad. After several repair attempts, the dealer replaced the entire driver seat, but the light continued to blink. After an extensive wait, the entire wiring harness was replaced and the light no longer blinked. In all we were without our van for nearly 3 months, awaiting parts. Because of the safety concern (airbag not deploying or deploying when it shouldn't) and because the van was under warranty, the dealer provided a loaner van while we awaited parts. On November 4, 2008, the van struck a deer and the driver's airbag deployed. Following airbag replacement and other insurance-covered repairs, the airbag dash light again began blinking. Dealer advised that the passenger seat sensor was defective and a replacement part ordered; we were advised the part would be available January 4, 2011. Toyota advised that, as van is no longer under warranty, no loaner vehicle is available. On January 4, we were advised that the problem is the wiring harness, which will not be available before February 9, 2011. Toyota has offered $35 / day toward loaner / rental vehicle. Once again this will be a 3-month out-of-service situation for a safety issue. There are many reports of 2006 Toyota Sienna airbag indicator / sensor / wiring harness problems reported on the internet. We believe this is a serious safety issue that Toyota has avoided addressing as a system / recall issue, corporate behavior consistent with earlier accelerator safety issues on its vehicles.

68 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/10/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Sienna. While driving 45 mph a vehicle rear ended him. The driver side curtain air bag did not deploy but the passenger side curtain air bag did. The vehicle was destroyed as a result. Four people sustained minor injuries. A police report filed. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current and failure mileages were approximately 11,940.

69 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/28/2010

My name is [xxx] and I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna with an airbag light that intermittently comes on and off. As a mechanic, I researched my airbag light diagnostic trouble code b0111 open in side squib rh circuit and there is a TSB on repairing the airbag light. It says to replace the airbag assembly in the passenger front seat. As mechanic, I know that when the airbag light is on, the airbags will not deploy in an emergency situation. Therefore, I don't see why a safety issue such as this is not a recall. So instead of a recall, I must now spend $900 on just the airbag, nevermind the cost to install it? I do not believe that I should be responsible for such a costly repair due to the fact that this is a safety issue that I could not have prevented. The TSB number is t-sb-0252-08 from my repair program, mitchell on demand and it says Toyota's reference number is [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

70 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

We purchased the van used in 2009 with 12000 miles on it and made our purchase decision based on the reputation for quality and safety that Toyota had at the time. In July 2009 the srs warning light began to illuminate. According to the dealer the air bag wiring harness and system was known to have issues. Luckily the dealer convinced Toyota USA to cover the repair. In November 2011 the light again came on and did its blinking thing. Currently we have a little over 48000 miles on the van and the dealer said that because we are past warranty that it won't be covered. A private mechanic tested the system and determined the airbags are not functioning and that Toyota has published a bulletin acknowledging the issue but refuses to repair this safety concern. When the light is blinking or on, the airbags will not deploy, putting everyone inside at risk. A van with 48000 miles should not have to have the airbags replaced twice. Looking at online forums there seems to be hundreds if not thousands of other Sienna owners experiencing the same problems and yet Toyota still refuses to recall the product or offer a reasonable repair. I am afraid that it will take a traffic collision resulting in a death or multiple deaths to push Toyota to fix this systemic problem. A second concern which seems to be problematic with our van as well as others is the welds within the driver door breaking. The vehicle has not been in an accident nor any other major incident to cause them to break. According to the private mechanic, it is a manufacturing issue and that the weld should be one of the strongest parts of the vehicle and shouldn't break.
