Since 7/2019 to now, 10/2019, I've had intermittent hard brake pedal. Letting up on the gas pedal, the van begins to stop right away. There's no rhyme or reason for the hard brake pedal, its affecting the front right wheel, and it smells bad. There's a vibration at times, and wobble. After the van sits for an hour, the brakes are fine until next time. Today, backing out of a parking spot, it was difficult to put the van in reverse, and letting off the brake, the van wouldn't roll back. I had to give it quite a bit of gas to get it to move. The van didn't want to go more than 10mph in a 35mph zone. All of this has happened since a new brake booster was installed. There is a new caliper on that right side, and both front brakes got new brake lines. The pads still have a lot of meat on them. I can drive the van just fine, then sometimes get back in the van later, 1 to 6 hours later, and the brake pedal is hard. It occurs when the van has been sitting all night and half the next day, or it can happen when I'm driving it. There is something wrong with the brakes on my 2005 Sienna. Nobody can figure it out.

TSB # t-sb-0045-14 rev2 September 19, 2017 front brake vibration we have been having a front brake vibration problem since June of 2016. We have spent money on new brakes, rotors, calipers, and tires, all to try to stop the problem. Just a couple weeks ago the tsp referenced above was brought to our attention. We have been to our local Toyota dealer and have been in contact with Toyota and are not satisfied with the response. They say it it not a safety issue, but how can overheating brakes not be a safety issue? we would appreciate your looking into the problem. We are facing paying hundreds of dollars to fix the problem that they should be resolving.

Within the last year I have replaced my brake pads replace 3 times. Just last month I replaced my pads , rotors and calipers. But now my pads are grinding really bad again and it's been 30 days since I had new pads, rotors and calipers put on. Something is definitely wrong! I'm worried about the saftey of Toyota Sienna van.

Problem with rear disc brakes in 2008 Toyota Sienna. Dealer found problem with caliper piston. Rust on clip apparently caused the caliper piston to stay extended and keep the disc brake pad in contact with the brake. Rear brakes failed at 33k miles. Repair performed at customer expense. Service person said warranty did not cover brake failure because it was "caused by rust. " brake failure occurred approximately one month after the 30k mile service.

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Sienna. While driving approximately 10 mph and coming to a stop, the contact heard a loud banging noise in the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated the failure occurred at different speeds and more frequently when driving on the highway. While driving at highway speeds the vehicle began to shake violently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians were unable to determine the failure. The technicians suggested the rear brakes, rotors, and calipers be replaced. After the repairs were performed the rear passenger side tire locked twice. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the technicians stated the vehicle showed extensive wear and over heating of the parking brake due to driving while the parking brake was engaged. The contact stated the parking brake was not engaged while driving and the overheating only occurred to the rear passenger side brakes. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

I was driving on a straight, level dry road with cruise control set at 58mph. Suddenly car began to downshift. Assuming transmission problem I disengaged cruise control and car almost came to a stop. I pushed gas pedal and drove in low gear to nearest pull-off. Discovered left front brake was smoking. After things cooled off I drove car in low gear about 6 miles to local service station. Mechanic found all brakes locked and removed all wheels. He inspected all rotors, calipers brake lines, etc and found no problems. (I had new brakes installed at dealership about 4 months earlier. ) when mechanic manipulated left front caliper all brakes disengaged. Mechanic found brake fluid level was normal. I've driven car about 500 miles since problem occurred with no problems. I don't use cruise control often - and haven't used it since problem occurred. I'm wondering if problem is with cruise control rather than brakes?? this could have been a disaster if it happened on a freeway at higher speeds!.

We have a 2005 Toyota Sienna Mini-van. At 16000 miles, it had a routine check and was found to have a stuck caliper in the front and so the dealer replaced all four rotors, brake pads, and tires. Now at 52000, the van was taken in for inspection and found to need all four rotors, brakes pads, and tires replaced again. We checked some web sites and found many people with similar issues with the Sienna. I contacted Toyota and their response is that this is normal wear and tear. I have had many vehicles and have never had to replace these items every 30,000 miles or so.
The car is used on an occasional basis. 34,000 miles in four years. It has suffered corrosion buildup on the rotors, so we have tried to use it at least twice a week, knowing that catastrophe can occur when the vehicle is not used with some regularity--especially in the cold weather. About two months ago, my wife complained of noise, and I told her it was due to corrosion buildup and that driving would remove the corrosion. Then she abandoned the car a couple of days later when the brakes failed. The inner pad had work down to metal, and the metal backing slid out of place. My wife wound up braking on the caliper piston. I will replace the brake shoes and rotors, and must also replace a caliper if I cannot find the piston as a separate piece. Estimate: $300, not counting the caliper, with me doing all the work. Toyota would likely charge a little more than $1,000 for the job. The car has sat unused and unrepaired now for weeks for want of the cash for the parts.

Rear brakes wore out at 21k miles even though front brakes were fine. Dealer blamed it on corrosion even though the vehicle was only 15mos old and spent all winter in florida. The front brakes show no sign of wear or corrosion!. Dealer charged for pads and rotors which did not fix the problem. Eventually replaced calipers which did fix the problem. I feel that the wearing out of only the rear brake pads is very unusual and was due to original manufacturer calipers. The end result (brake failure) was unanticipated and could have resulted in handling problems and an accident.

2005 Toyota Sienna awd. Rear disc brakes. . . Clip rust causes the caliper piston to stay extended and keep the disc brake pad in contact with the disc. Brakes wear excessively. . . Brakes needed to be replaced in 23000 miles with wear on the disc. Dealer states this is common problem. Clip replaced with new clip at customer request, disc resurfaced. Both at customer expense. Service person states they are getting severe rust on these clips, could cause brake failure.
Both front brake calipers leaking fluid causing the brakes to squeak, the consumer was notified that there was a technical stop sales order issued on all brake parts and the dealer had to wait for parts. Nlm.

Consumer started to hear a slight squeak when stopping. Took vehicle to mechanic, and they said both right and left brake calipers were leaking. The dealer found out the fluid that was leaking was not brake fluid but was assembly lube. The consumer was told to return for inspection after 500 miles but was concerned about the vehicle's safety.
The vehicle experienced a brake problem. The calipers were missing the retaining rings. The rubber boots were pulled into the brake cylinder which caused brake failure. The Toyota mfr refused to acknowledge the problem. The consumer was unaware of the low brake fluid function given through the emergency brake light indication. The vehicle was losing fluid at a slow rate more so in the right wheel than in the left. The consumer requested reimbursement. The consumer stated the dust boot retaining rings on the calipers were never installed at the manufacturer.
